  • Welcome to Mike's Retro Tech.
Thanks for joining me again this week.
My Dell Inspiron 5570 (TH-cam editing) laptop is getting a bit long in the tooth now. It is coming up to 6 years old and the fan is almost constantly on all the time.
Not having the current funds to replace it with a newer model, I have been progressively upgrading the components to make it last a bit longer now that it is out of warranty.
    Specs:
It is an i7 8th gen with TPM 2.0 and a dedicated 4GB Radeon M530 graphics and has at the moment, 16 GB DDR3 ram, 1 x 1TB NVME 2.0, 1 x 1TB SSD (Boot drive split into 3 OS partitions [Windows 11 personal, Windows 11 work and Kali Linux] and 1 x 2 TB SSD for games and video storage). It is good enough (at the moment) for what I want to use it for.
I did replace the thermal paste a couple of years ago and now it is time to repeat the process.
This time I am going to use Conductonaut Grizzly liquid metal thermal compound instead of the standard fare.
Many youtube videos have been watched on the merits of liquid metal, and hopefully the pitfalls that others have suffered will not affect me.
Have guess at how much a reduction in operating temperatures I will get once the liquid metal is in situ.
Try this at home by all means, but be careful not to get any over spill on your mainboard!
** The first 4 minutes or so of this video are silent as i forgot to turn on the cigar mic on the camera! :( **
    Thanks for watching.
