Sikhs celebrate Diwali as a historical and religious event known as Bandi Chhor Divas, meaning the "Day of Liberation." This day commemorates the return of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib, from imprisonment in 1619. According to Sikh history, Guru Hargobind Sahib was held captive by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the Gwalior Fort along with 52 other Hindu princes. When the emperor finally agreed to free the Guru, the Guru insisted that the princes should also be freed. The emperor allowed this, with the condition that only those princes who could hold onto the Guru's robe could walk out with him. Guru Hargobind Sahib had a special cloak made with 52 tails, enabling all 52 princes to walk out together.
When Guru Hargobind Sahib returned to Amritsar, the Sikh community celebrated his arrival with lights and joy, marking the event as Bandi Chhor Divas. This coincided with the Hindu festival of Diwali, and since then, Sikhs have continued to celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas alongside Diwali. Today, Sikhs worldwide commemorate the day by lighting lamps, decorating their homes, and gathering in gurdwaras for prayers, particularly at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where special celebrations are held. This day is a reminder of the values of freedom, compassion, and courage in the Sikh tradition.
