My budget friendly alternative: I have a costco jump starter/air compressor. It is a bit larger but it includes an air compressor/light/ and usb jacks.
I had two batteries implode on my Jeep JKU on two long trips. The symptoms were odd, like e-lockers not unlocking, accessory power not charging devices, stuff like that. My point is if you have a modern, sophisticated (complicated) rig, and you start adding a bunch of electrical components, you should really consider dual battery (which I just installed).
I have a little jump box like he is showing boost something don’t remember but I Love it it holds a charge roughly 2 months and that is with using it two or three times jumping other folks
My brother is a mechanic and has one of those that has saved me a couple times so yes.. but I'll be going duals and solar panels.. cuz I'm the exception
You can completly remove the auxiliary battery on a JL by disconnecting the positive cable from the aux battery and connecting it to the positive cable of the main battery and completly removing the aux ground cable. Then you can throw the lawnmower battery away.
Just threw down on that Wagan myself. 🙏🤙 cheap insurance for myself, the fam, and anyone who needs help on the fly. Excited to move up to a Northstar eventually. Unless my accessories get out of control, or over landing trips become way more intense, honestly I think single is just fine.
Specific to the FZJ80c i’ve considered installing the windshield washer fluid relocation kit along with the passenger side battery tray in order to have a nice storage area for a tool kit or even my air compressor.
I'd eventually like to have a dual battery system since I have a fridge and lots of area/work lights, for when I work at events. For now, I just run an off the shelf, battery cutoff switch when the voltage gets to 11.5v it cuts off the power to my accessories
I check the charge in my jump-started pack monthly, and top it off every 2 or 3 months. Having a reliable jump-started pack has allowed me to move the dual-battery system further down the "To-Do" list so Iwas able to use those funds on an onboard air system instead.
Thanks for this one. Have been contemplating a dual battery system for quite some time now. But a little voice always stopped me. You have now put that to bed for me. Check electrical system and get a quality battery. Done. Thanks plenty.
This topic was discussed with my wife inadvertently before we watched this episode. Lol my wife suggested that we go with a similar product, that would have multiple uses around camp. Guess I'll have to tell her she was right again lol.
Yeah quite risky going bush with 1 battery set ups. Especially running a dometic fridge. Compared to an Engel, them dometic / Waeco brand fridges like using batteries. Either way if your fridge runs your battery down, yes you can jump start but your battery starts to degrade and one day, not even the jump start will help you. The 80 series Landcruiser you have there has plenty of room for second battery, I'm so surprised you don't have one. Even if your trying to keep it minimal you still need to run a fridge and charge cameras or phones which are increasing used as a camera these days. In Australia one of the first mods you do is 2nd battery. Can be a real long way with no phone signal for help around here. I strongly recommend duel battery and a jump pack. Be safe and enjoy.
If you decide to run duals. Check out Off-Grid Engineering. I chose the setup for my FJC with the Redarc DC to DC charger to future proof for a solar panel. 😭 once!
I was going to go with the redarc, but then found the Renogy DC to dc charger (also with MPPT) will charge my starting battery once the second is full. Redarc doesnt do that. Ive been very pleased with the stuff from Renogy
What about running 12v 25A plug to a truck bed and using a 500w inverter to keep this charged while driving? Wouldn't that be easier if you are low watt usage?
Love your vids and recommendations but I bought another brand jumper off of the web that is a little less powerful; 800 peak amps, but holds a charge for 12 months and is half the price. Warranty is 2 years and it can jump vehicle up to 30x per charge.
I do remember years ago you were shopping for new battery and you put it put there for debate and folks recommended you to buy northstar. NOW my battery is dead and guess what I am going to get for the jeepo
Hello Mike it's patrick from Venezuela ,I recently came over your videos ,, now I a big fan I have a fj80 which is my baby and since last year I am preparing it little by little to a good and complete rig ..so many questions I always have but your complicate videos ( Jaja) answer them always I will soon sign up to overland.i will really like to become a member looking forward to more excellent videos and great tips.. thank you
Thanks Mike. What about using a portable power station battery? Can you jump start off one of those? I’m thinking a product similar to the Jackery. Would that be kind of in between a jump start battery and a full dual setup?
You can't use lithium portable jumpstarters to jumpstart vehicles bc of the different lithium chemistries. Without getting into too much, a pouch-style lithium battery (jumpstarting type) can discharge very quickly, but holds less watt-hour. Versus, a lithium power station (18650-type) of battery is slow discharge, but has more capacity (watt-hours). Hope that helps!
What about the ecoflow Delta?? Any feedback from use?? I think it is a great way to have power in the trails without wiring up a full dual battery setup
You said that you can run your fridge for 3 days without draining your battery? And still start your car. Is it the new drawer fridge from Dometic ? CD30? I am thinking do do something similar in my Land Rover LR4. And was not too sure if I needed to have dual battery or not. Also what model inverter do you have? Thank You
Well - no. You don't need a dual battery system...unless you need a dual battery system. For your use model, you are squeaking by on an AGM battery that isn't deep cycle, isn't charging all of the way to 100%- probably not past about 85% and you aren't consuming much power if you are only using gear that is operational while the engine is running. You say that you single battery can run the fridge for 3 days -- what is the voltage reading at the end of the three days? Also...how much of that time is spent motor on? If you drive 3-4 hours a day, dont use kit while motor is off and are running your fridge until it hits low voltage cut-off-- brother that can be your plan.
A lot of talking and no reason given why one don't need a dual battery system for auxiliary systems like, fridge, lights, Inverter, etc. A Battery jumper should never be a requirement with a properly specced dual battery system in place, my opinion.
My budget friendly alternative:
I have a costco jump starter/air compressor.
It is a bit larger but it includes an air compressor/light/ and usb jacks.
you dont need dual battery, but having it extra for other utilities and stuff will be nice...such as Winch, fridge, external lights, etc
I don't laugh at much these days so THANK YOU for your one take videos Mikey. You don't even know how much they are appreciated.
I am very glad to hear that.

I need to get one. For the longest time i didnt believe it until at work jump starting a semi truck then i started to believe 🙂
Mike have gone on trail welding with a Jackery inverter.Guy in my party snapped his tie rod.It works fine now.
My brother is a mechanic and has one of those that has saved me a couple times so yes.. but I'll be going duals and solar panels.. cuz I'm the exception
Me too haha i find comfort in what others would call overkill

Literally the day I’m deciding whether to go dual or not. I think this solves it, single Northstar 27 it is...

Thx for the 9 min video about products for sale.
Thanks for watching!
Oh man! That was tough to watch.... Hope you 2 get out soon and have dome trail therapy!
BTW... have a link for the battery box/jumper???
Great information Mike . Thank you for sharing . Until next time stay safe and take care .

What about getting a solar panel first and using it to continually top off your primary battery? THEN get a second battery as necessary.
I run this exact setup on my Tacoma (also with an Spod) and its great.
Hey Mikey! I liked it, a lot. I got a "Charge" out of it, too. Pun intended. Cheers, Mate.
wow Jack your a real bright spark with that one! you definitely get my Volt
@@paps69shed Now the system is all amped up and that got the batteries floated and synched, too! Cheers Mate.
Great video Mike, how many drinks did it take for you to get through the video in one take?
You know what - I watch that video and was all - "you seem drunk". Nothin but sparkly water :)
OB5246 Yup. Running a big Odyssey AGM on my FJC and lovin it. Plus have a manual so I can bump start myself in a pinch.. In theory 😁
funny that you just put this out, I just installed a genesis dual battery set up in the rubicon . test run this weekend!
I have Wagan Tech V8 but my fridge never drained my battery. I don't believe in Dual battery systems as a necessity.

Hey Michael are we doing the Sierra Rally this September. Looks like things are opening up soon. Hope all is well!
I have a similar system from Noco. Love it!
I thought you guys used the NOCO Boost. I have it in my Amazon wish list but then you mention this Wagan thing.
When setting the cutoff voltage of your fridge, since you only have one battery. How low do you set it? Thanks
Great video, but can you please give a link for that battery jump? Thanks
Yes!
I'm just wanting to put a battery in my trailer to charge my sidecar as i head down to overland West expo to meet you guys
Mike knows best.... keeping it real...
Thanks Mike. What about using a portable power station battery? Can you jump start off one of those? I’m thinking a product similar to the Jackery. Would that be kind of in between a jump start battery and a full dual setup?

Fast forward to 1:50 to start info on dual battery setup.
Be waiting on that review..
Of that jump start battery
So you do not need duals but have a backup...Like another battery!? Because those boosters are batteries No!?
if you have a diesel with two batteries already do you meed threee batteries?
Another great video simply explained.
What is the best setup for just adding auxiliary lighting?
Mikey .. have you ever thought of putting turbo diesel on it ?
I have :)
I have a jetson ebike. I want to add 1000 watt battery i need the adapter battery were can i find these. Thankyou. Glenn

Are you running a high output alternator or a voltage booster for your AGM? Thanks
Am am not, though my alternator is new.
What about lithium starting batteries?
Another great video Sir
Hi there having said that. Can you, maybe not you but can you put a dual battery on a 2011 Nissan Armada? Like to hear from you.
2 batteries are always better than 1
Mike, 4:20, thanks for the info.
can you put this battery in a mazda 3 car ??
Didn't know if you're going to make it tonight.
Made it!
What if I have etorque?
I want to use my plug in high saw
Or a coffee maker
thanks, stay safe :)
How do u get your battery to fully charge?
is this JIm Carey ?
Cover blown.
Great Video!
Technical!...But true.

These topics are actually important for many ppl. Thank you again for these videos. Really like them.

Ummm. I’m dizzy now.
LoL, I feel silly too when someone see me talking to myself on cam.
This guy has forgotten more about overlanding than I have ever known.
A lot of talking and no reason given why one don't need a dual battery system for auxiliary systems like, fridge, lights, Inverter, etc. A Battery jumper should never be a requirement with a properly specced dual battery system in place, my opinion.
The jumper is insurance for a single AGM battery setup
First!
🙈
Is something wrong with ya bud? Looking a bit disheveled
