As Letterman pointed it out, once NBC made this deal with Conan, Jay should have left the network once his contract was up, they did Jay and Conan dirty, Leno could have work at any network (other than CBS of course) but for some insane reason he decided to stay at NBC and therefore damage his own legacy and the Tonight Shows as well.
In 2008, Jay (still #1) was certainly being courted by ABC to be Jimmy Kimmel's lead-in. That's what panicked NBC into offering Leno a prime time show at 10:00pm. But after the prime time show tanked I don't recall Bill Carter mentioning in his book that Jay was getting such offers. In 2009 (after the cancellation of the prime time show), Jay was offered a new 30 minute show that would move Conan's "Tonight Show" to midnight. Jay was not immediately sold on that plan, which prompted him and his producer to ask if it would be possible for them to be released from their contracts. NBC told them that wasn't going to happen. That's what went down there.
NBC refused to let him out of his contract. Jay was also trying to keep his staff employed. He did not damage his legacy. Also, it was Conan who screwed Jay over by getting him fired in the first place. I have no smpyatrhy for him whatsoever and he got what was coming to him.
Conan is the best by far imo. I try to remember that in an interview after he lost the tonight show, Conan said that he was fine and was taken care of. That no contracts were ever violated and he came out alright.
Main difference is he asks you some questions on his podcast. But he doesn't let you answer and instead talks the whole time like he's the one being interviewed lol

Leno has refused to take ANY accountability. and pushing most of the blame on NBC (justifiably so) and an eager Conan who couldn’t stay in his lane and wait his turn. Leno had an motive that he won’t admit to but it’s very evident. people who defend Leno are the same people who CANT take accountability for their actions. if so many people be saying the same thing about you, when do you start taking accountability and owning up with what you’re doing. Leno acted like one of those toxic girls you break up with who can’t accept you have moved on so you wait around, following the ex and the new boo around. and hoping that things go sour so you can slide back in.
6:46 I have my criticisms of Leno, but I give him props for citing Craig Ferguson's inadvertent catalyst role in the late-2000s/early 2010s late night confusion. It's true he "gummed up" the works when he started battling Conan earnestly at 12;35a. Honestly Conan vs. Craig was a far more compelling contest to me than Jay vs. Dave (admittedly, as someone who is a big fan of both). I still think Craig's show is one of the most underheralded pieces of pop culture in the past 20 years. It's funny in the fuller interview where Jay tells the story of an executive telling him that it wasn't enough to be #1, they wanted "what's above #1." It's actually one of those things that makes no sense when you say it out loud or read it as a standalone statement. And yet it completely sums up NBC's thinking at the time. "Beyond #1" to them, I think, meant "not just winning but monopolizing." They wanted Jay and Conan & they wanted Jay and Dave in the early '90s. They knew Jay was pliable and when he'd retort with "I'm #1," I think they wanted to lean on him in a way where they could keep other ambitious valuable properties (Dave, then Conan, then Fallon) without losing him. And criticize NBC all you want (and I have) but it worked! Jay still does Jay Leno's Garage for one of NBC's cable properties and Conan was devalued from network level by the time he left NBC.
Conan was almost cancelled early if it wasnt for others like Leno and Letterman vouching for him. He wound up finding his niche and success eventually but why would you try to take someone elses show by demanding to NBC that he must get the tonight show in 5 years or else he is gone. Its like screwing over the people who helped save you. In the end when Conan took over the Tonight show he lost audience members and the advertisers who were losing money demanded to NBC that Leno come back. It was a shitty situation for all as NBC didnt want to get rid of Conan or Leno but couldnt keep one without losing the other. The fact that after Leno took off Tonight show and then they told him to leave again for Jimmy Fallon shows that it wasnt Lenos fault. Leno even visited Jimmy Fallon on the tonight show after Jimmy Fallon took over. This conflict between Leno and Conan was going to happen regardless because of their popularity.
@@mk17173n "why would you try to take someone else's show by demanding to NBC that he must get the tonight show in 5 years or else he is gone." Simple: Because FOX' offer was huge. Conan had leverage and his agent used it. No different than Kusnick used her leverage to say "Give Jay the Tonight Show when Johnny retires and tell *no one* about it (Johnny included)." Jay simply lost the show via the same tactic that got him the show in the first place. Jay defenders seem to conveniently forget how much money Conan lost out on by turning FOX down and taking the chance he'd still be #1 at 12;35a for five years (and he wasn't unanimously....along came Craig Ferguson to push him). If you think it was galling for Conan to do what he did, you must have been equally appalled that Jay didn't just refuse to push for TTS and take CBS' offer instead in the early 1990s. The fact that he took the job back after is a very bad look too. To protect his staff for two years? They were told 5 years in advance that the show will be replaced. Letterman would have alienated that whole crowd inside of a year. Conan would have done the same thing too, or he would have looked foolish trying to conform to their tastes.
I don't know if Dave would've alienated "The Tonight Show" audience, but I do think his inability to get along with the *NBC* executive branch (not to mention his more often that not second place ratings) would've gotten Dave forcibly retired a lot sooner than they tried to do with Jay. Going to *CBS* was the best decision Dave ever made, and (without either of them realizing it) Jay kinda' took a bullet for him staying. And Conan should've recognized that *NBC* was not an outfit to put your complete trust in.

30 seconds of jay speaking.
Conan and his agent essentially had Jay Leno fired from a show he made #1. He owed Conan nothing.

This would be such a wonderful interview if Howie Mandell would let the guests talk. Thank you girl for calling him out
6:46 I have my criticisms of Leno, but I give him props for citing Craig Ferguson's inadvertent catalyst role in the late-2000s/early 2010s late night confusion.
Jay is still a douche tho.
Here comes the playas
Conan and Craig.... man, that's absolutely true. I would struggle to pick and see one if I got to choose the same time spot for my TV.
@@mk17173n "why would you try to take someone else's show by demanding to NBC that he must get the tonight show in 5 years or else he is gone."
Simple: Because FOX' offer was huge. Conan had leverage and his agent used it. No different than Kusnick used her leverage to say "Give Jay the Tonight Show when Johnny retires and tell *no one* about it (Johnny included)."
Jay simply lost the show via the same tactic that got him the show in the first place.
Because he very easily could have.
Howie is gonna say that Jay made Conan's slot number 1? Pretty dumb if you ask me. Conan made that happen, not Jay.

He was protecting his job and his staff, wouldn’t you? NBC was at fault here.
The fact that he took the job back after is a very bad look too. To protect his staff for two years? They were told 5 years in advance that the show will be replaced. Imagine the lead in to the prime talkshow is another talkshow who gets better guests... It's sad Conan lost both the big factors of him choosing the Tonight Show, which are to keep his library of amazing work on late night and ofcourse a raise. Leno touched on something that is often ignored in the whole Letterman/Conan camp: Jay inherited Johnny's audience, their sensibilities, their values, their worldview.

@RockMeAmadeus Jay didn’t have a manager, he had an agent though. Also the name Conan is so prevalent in the branding because 1, no other host shared that name, and 2, that was the literal name of his show, branding/merch for the show CONAN was obviously going to heavily feature the name Conan lol
@RockMeAmadeus love how you easily skipped over the fact that one of ur statements was false, Jay Leno did in fact have an agent. And this is so funny, it was a new show, staring Conan O’Brien, he was formative in its creation, all the other shows mentioned by you were developed by networks, then had a host search, obviously they couldn’t just be named after one person lol. Also u seem to willfully be forgetting that Jay developed the JAY LENO SHOW. Also there are like 20 late night tv host’s, what tf are u on lmao
Conan is for real funny.
A valuable piece of ShowBiz history, but Howey being a Leno Stan was heartbreaking for me.
So you don't like hearing what really happened?
