I just want to show my appreciation for the whole crew. The last year has been a down hill battle dealing with anxiety and depression. Everytime you post a new video I get out of my head for a short period of time and it’s a blessing. I wish nothing but the best for everyone of you in your life endeavors! Stay blessed and stay humble!
Keep your head up man, I know how hard it is but life is worth it. Don’t be afraid to try medication if you haven’t already.
Vice Grip Garage is another great channel
Your not alone no matter what you think. The fact you reached out here proves that. Just take one step everyday you'll make it! You're stronger than you know! Thoughts and prayers from SC!
Hi Danny Please do yourself a favour (You owe it to yourself ;>) ) go and seek medical advice. A mate of mine nearly lost his son because of anxiety and depression. But with some help he's doing well and holding down his 1st real job too.
Stay strong! You’ve got this.
I don't care what the haters say Paul you and the guys are building a cool truck... and again the way you show the mess ups like a normal person is why you're channel is my favorite on TH-cam
They do it nice because they do it twice
The chrome dash bezel , and the gauges , and the glove box door just made it look so nice inside. It’s looking really nice guys
It's awesome you guys haven't gotten too big for saying thank you for things you have received.
Hi Paul.
a sugestion for a solution to the oil pressure gauges.
find an old fashioned front fender mount headlight and split it in half and insert gauges where the glass would have been. then you'll get a curved style that might fit it better
DAY 2 of asking Paul, Sean, Matt, Robby, Rory and Merlin to come together for one special build. Pick one of the vehicles on the lot and do a two week super build. We NEED this “SuperBuild” series. Let’s go boys!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I have seen how Paul drives! You really need to rethink that tank crossover line! That will be VERY SHORT LIVED as it is now. I would suggest that the fuel feed and return lines be dropped in from the top of the tanks just like on a semi.
I am really surprised that Dar hasn't made the same observation yet.
At least put it in a "c" channel. Yeah, it's gonna get ripped off for sure.
That ship has sailed, they'll be like that til they get ripped off, THEN fixed.
Agreed. I would put some square shaped tanks, higher up and tucked in more. I don't know how that big round tank on Merlin's tow truck hasn't been peeled open like a tin can yet either.
@@scubasteve7946I think Merlin's is steel.
Hunter’s eye for detail shortens the time frame of having to do it twice. Paul would eventually figure it out. Hunter just lessens that process. Kudos, Hunter.
Yeah.. some times I rag on him, but, Hunter is a stand up guy!
Hunter just doesn't want to film it twice
I can have a 50-50 shot at something, and I get it wrong 90% of the time.... 😂
You say that and Hunter's head increases in size
Hi to all you Fab Rats. I enjoy your show so much I am often awake in the early European small hours watching you. The Rat Back has become so popular and I am so hoping you stay on it this time through to completion. I don’t mean all in one video of coarse but just stay on the project till it’s done. Please don’t get like Tim Gentry. At time he takes on more and more projects that at times I’m sure he doesn’t know his head from his a’s from his r’s. lol. Poor old Western, he put his truck in for refurb expecting it back for a show later in that year. Not to sure but that was either two or three years ago. I watch all of his shows to bur sometime you can see just how young at heart he is. If he sees something he likes he just has to have it. I know he has had some terrible luck in the recent past. So much so I don’t know of anyone climbing out of a barrel of crap such as he does his heart and determination are the biggest efforts I have know in my lifetime. Yes a lot of people drag their way out of trouble but not at the speed he seems to get over things. Just like yourself with a great family and team that you both have. ps, where is the bus(h) rat. Are we likely to see it again. Hope I’ve not gone on too much but keep at it. Your utube success is a sure sign of all of your efforts. If you intend doing the roof with the same material, you will deffo need tome heatproof bonding for it. It is the best sound deadening stuff for cars though. Even if you paint over it to camouflage it.
Glad to hear Matt say they other day and clear up there's no beef with you guys. Even tho this event didn't work out (and I totally get and support your decision) looking forward to seeing the two channels work together in the future....
What was the decision to not participate? I missed it.
Why would there be beef?
Seems fab rats didn’t like the idea of others driving their rigs
Maybe that and/or that Merlin's birthday bash is the same weekend and has been on the calendar for more than a year.
I still think it was a silly decision on fabs part .. should be there ..
That split screen is genius! Do it more often please. 😎
Great way to start my Sunday morning. Coffee and a big plate of Fab Rats.
"This won't stick to brass..." ROFL Paul, sometimes you are so funny that it's legendary. Also, "Why everything's hard, and there no easy stuff?" Because you've dealt with all the easy problems and left harder ones for the finish. It's a very common thing that people do.
Or copper
I come over to watch your videos just to see how much fun and banter you guys have. So fun to see.
Hey Paul that is a neat tip using brass to prevent weld from sticking when you need to fill a hole. Another option to brass,I have used a piece of copper or a chunk of carbon as a non-stick weld backer as well!
42:40 Everytime you hit that clutch, you are gonna appreciate your perfect machining of that assembly. It sure does feel good when your work is felt 100x in a day. When you replace something that you cannot feel, it can seem like a waste.
All he has to do is fix the angle on the brake pedal pad now.
Love the show. Silicone attracts water and causes extra rust. Buy some autobody seam sealer ( epoxy or single stage stuff). I do restoration/autobody for a living. Silicone is the enemy!!! 😆
You should build your gage pod on top of the dash out of exhaust pipe. I think it would flow better with the dash than the square box does
For saying how much you didn't know what you were doing with a lathe when I first started watching to doing what you do now and knowing the model of lathe you want as an upgrade. You've come so far. Still love watching what you guys do. I enjoy watching.
Great content as always. I have to tell you, my 5 year old granddaughter saw the hoodie I picked up from you guys and it's been renamed; its officially the "fix it mouse" in our house. Sorry 😅
The background music reminds me of my dearly departed dad, he was a banjo picker in a bluegrass band. I’m so happy you don’t play obnoxious music.
Good morning everybody and thumbs UP to Fab Rats!
Plastic airline melting .... either change that section of the line to a metal line (or) run the plastic thru a section of 1/2 inch metal conduit to act as a heat shield, or both!
It is a pleasure to watch you guys all working together and love the progress on the awesome projects y'all build! By the way, your cat's belly-to-the-sky/twisted neck with an upside-down head sleeping position ... my little dog does the exact same thing! His name is Pete Barker.
The inerior is looking awesome. I have similar seats in my 51 Willys truck - the leather on yours is perfect!! Well done.
I'm actually proud of you for not being bothered by how crooked everything in the interior is! Most people would struggle keep between the lines on the road with things tilted all wonky like that.
You may want to protect that fuel tank crossover hose with some angle iron hung by hard rubber mounts !!
most definitely this.
That hose is still one of the worst ideas I have seen in a long while, for several reasons...
Agreed!!@@Bonderoev
Yep, I noticed as well.
Your projects are always great to watch, but the Rat Rod Wrecker has got to be in the top five. The crew is terrific, from the videographers to the editors, and Hunter and Sean have proven how good they are, but don't stop giving them a hard time. Very enjoyable.
It'd take some work but would look pretty cool if the crew could retrofit something like a 1940 Chevrolet Passenger Front Park Lamp Light Lens Housing Assembly to house the boost and EGT gauges.
I have with each of my vehicles, learnes that a flat black dash mat will not allow the sun to reflect back onto the windshield. A really shiny dash cuts visibility damn near in half, reflecting the dash back into the windshield. While the flat color back won't, you end up with full view. Try placing a white envelope onto dash and see what happens.
Hood too.
Hey Paul I would put Rubber Floor matts in the truck not carpet ,it will be easier to clean out the mud when you go off road.
Good job Hunter! In typical country boy style you let them pass the exit and then ask them 'so, where are you going?'😂
Shawn is such a super nice feller, has anyone else besides myself noticed that? Lol
Yes, I agree shawn is a good dude.
I have noticed when Hunter says
"I can't do something"
Shawn always says something like
"yes can it just takes practice" or something along those lines anways.
Also, it's not just limited to just Hunter, as he's like that with everybody he interacts with.
Having Hunter around is a great benefit to you (Paul) and for Hunter, as he is learning.
I like the way that the old Chevy rollback is turning out. It’s like a 1,000 piece puzzle that is getting so close to being finished.
Tip for running air lines and wiring. Get 1" black plastic landscape sprinkler pipe. Inexpensive as heck, easy to snake down frame rails, protects from minor hazards, and stupid easy to snake things through, especially for mods/additions that occur down the road. Even works for brake lines.
But not near exhaust
@@mrmotofy 'Near' is relative. Same guidelines apply as for any other wire or soft tube.
@@maxironpaw yes, but that plastic tube is NOT rated for temps any where near exhaust.
Good morning Paul I really like the progress on the Ratback. i love the fact you are going to keep it old school set up as much as possible that definitely adds to the uniqueness of the Ratback.
Nice accomplishments on the 'ol Ratback. Credit to Hunter for checking out the yard ornament & then with Shawn for getting the glove box parts. That is a fine looking dash. And regarding the dual gauge box on top the dash, ehh, so what. Like you said, it is primitive. Let it be and just enjoy it for it's natural character.
Keep up the good work. My favorite You Tube videos next the Cleetus McFarland.
I just want to say that its been great to watch Hunter learn. Someone said his good eye for detail along with his desire to learn, and his attitude are great.
Seeing that dash come together transported me back to my childhood - those were still functioning work trucks - always thought the chrome facades were the coolest thing. Good job, all of you.
Dash looks epic, not sure about WALL-E welded to the top, I'm sure with your skills it ain't a problem, sooner than later I hope
Hunter slowly explaining Paul that it’s upside down. Respectfully done Hunter! 😂😂
As always enjoy the content and insight. I don't comment a ton but just watching your videos helps crossover to things I'm figuring out also!
The ol' Rat Back is looking really nice inside! I'm glad you kept the patina of age on the outside and updated the interior. It will be much better for the driver and crew that way.
The thing with the gauges for boost on the dash is it’s square and everything else is rounded maybe Merlin has something that could be modified that more time appropriate even tach pods would look better and put that square thing on the dune buggy repurpose it. 😊
I look forward to watching Fab Rats 🐀🐁 each and every week! You all inspire me to get off my butt and get busy! The Rat back is looking so good, I hate to see it coming to the end! It's been a great build to see the finish line coming up! I look forward to you driving it to Havasu, Merlin will have the biggest smile on his face, seeing the Rat back as it should be, on the road! Catch you on the next. ✌️ 😊
You'll need to put an angle iron between the two tanks to protect the fuel line. First rock you go over will rip it off. Had an old Pete cabover with the same setup. A porcupine on the freeway by Weed, CA airport took it out. Make it look like a goal post hanging from the frame. Good luck.
This is Paul, he'll put on a full skid plate just for that fuel line.
Wow, the dash looks great ! ... I think the FabBack " I think that's the name ya'll came up with"{ Ok, I'm a Moron, it's in the Title } is going to be a Flag Ship for this whole thing you got going on, it really is gonna be awesome once it's 88.5 % done ( because we know , that's about how far we're getting lol ! ) ... Shawn and Hunter out in the snow climbing inside the " Yard Ornament," taking out the VERY NEEDED hinges was a memory for sure. I like to focus on the cool stuff in the shop , the projects, the adventures ! .. the Jet Ski trip down the river was Awesome., the let's go across the country to pick up an Old Car and Michele " well I'm going with you ! " .... just great stuff and fun to watch and get into. Drop the Matt's Off Road stuff and let's focus on Hunter's Welding Progress ! 🚙❤👍
I got a 46 Chevy and am going to put in on my 93 4x4 Cummins! I can’t wait to have a truck as cool as you and Merlin. You have both inspired me. But I’m nervous because it’s the biggest build I’ve attempted.
Just like eating an elephant!
One bite at a time !!!
The Ratback is starting to look like a sweet ride! I hope it ends up on a T-shirt! Thanks for sharing the process!
What a great video so much moving forward on the Ratback! This truck is looking amazing on the inside and outside. Hunter, Paul and Sean are doing some great work making everything work. We can't wait to see the bed and this thing working!
I won't worry about others' comments on to do things. You are the one with a very successful You Tube Channel. It's you and your wife's wisdom and hard work that makes you a successful channel.
i love the steering wheel on the ratback, it elevates it a lot.👍 It kinda makes me think of a racing yacht, or a classic Bugatti presenting at Pebble Beach. 😎
the Ratback needs all the cool trucker lights on the cab roof, fenders etc.. this is the coolest wrecker so far. cant wait for Michele's Jeepster build. i suggested the newer wrangler frame swap a long time ago, the fact that youre gonns make a Rubi frame work is awesome👍
Nicely Done Paul ,Shaun and Hunter, appreciate your time and effort in this build
Thanx for sharing your thoughts 👍
Outstanding work
Have a Great Day 👍
I remember as a young man and my Dad had an early 50's Chevy pickup farming. Seeing that dash brings back so many memories. I remember asking why the spelling was different than Chevy vs Chevrolet.
Hunter, tell Paul a broken clock is right twice a day...LOL 😂
Being just slightly older than this truck there were many just like her in my life as I grew up. It is a real pleasure watching this one getting rebuilt.
Hey Paul. First off I really enjoy watching you channel and am amazed at some of the knowledge you have. No disrespect but I believe that hose running between your tanks is going to give you trouble if it doesn't have something to support it
Anyway keep up the good work. God bless you and your family.
The rat back is coming together and looks awesome!!! Keep it up guys 🎉🎉🎉
Good morning Fab Rats
Paul, the trim beard looks really good on you. In a close up, it kinda gives you that more experienced look. Bug anyway, you should keep the shirt beard and give Hunter a kick in the butt if he gives you heck. 😂😂😂
14:10 My old man literally just told me about this trick last weekend!
Can I make a suggestion for dash gauges in that box ? Find a couple of old tear drop semi cab lights and modify them to hold the gauges and sit on the dash. It would look like something from that era at least.
That fuel cross over line looks like it's begging to be ripped out!
Your guage box is good. Functionality is key to anything built by hand, it's boxy but so what. Put some black vinyl padding on it if the haters don't like it.😊
I didn't tell you that gauge box looked like crap. But it does. Work a new box with period type curves that looks like it could be an original add on from JC Whitney. What material is the seat cover? If it isn't real leather, it sure looks good for that truck.
That Dash is looking SWEET.
I'll be the 5001st person to say the gauge cluster you built on top of dash, looks like crap. It's at the wrong angle and too square. it doesn't fit in with all the original contours of the dash.
The off road rollback will be great. I like how you were able to weld and machine the brake/clutch rod. With those new bushings and Zerk fittings those will be smooth and last a long time. You guys do amazing work, and have fun in the process...
Good lord if you have someone else doing the editing consider getting someone else. The constant cuts of trying to shave off seconds is super annoying. I can not stand when editors do that, It makes a person sea sick. 🤢
The interior is looking so sweet! I love that you are keeping the dash looking so close to original, and using all the mechanical controls. Keep up the amazing work!
I think the "dashboard gauge boxy thingy" you made looks splendid Paul. Some of your best work as of yet.😉Your welcome, hope this helps your "feelings" a bit😂
The little box with the two gauges in it doesn't look that bad. Maybe just paint it to match the dash and put some kind of a clip on it to hold customer's keys so you don't forget about them. If someone complains about it, ask them for some suggestions and if they don't have any constructive ones tell them to run up an alley and holler fish. (That's a Barney Fife quote. We always need to give him credit where credit is due) 😉
When Paul held the dash grill up it brought back memories of my grampa's truck looks great, gonna be a cool ride
I did a cab swap on my pick up and converted the cab for a four speed. It was a good experience and lots of fun. You having a garage and lots of help is great. Even Hunter pitches in. lol Great videos you guys. Hope Dar is doing ok.
What you folks did for that family goes beyond words. I pray God keeps His hand of blessing on you both. God bless you! Love you guys
37:26 function over fashion but if you do ever change out the gage box, not sure if it’ll fit but maybe check out some old Cadillac headlight or taillight trim, I think that might suit your fancy.
Y’all are doing a great job on that old Chevy, nothing wrong with the gauges on top of the dash. I would put a rubber mat down versus carpet personally. Keep up the good work, can’t wait to see more.
That is awesome, the interior is looking better and better. Well done on the sound proofing, another area to really reduce road noise is to put the sound deadener on the inside of the wheel arches, it makes a big difference to reducing the road noise.
To gauge how much room between the radiator support and the hood, loosely wad up some aluminum foil and park it on the core support then close the hood and the foil will mash down to the shape of the gap between the core support and the hood.
Thanks for taking us subscriber's along for the ride. 👍✌️🤙🤙🍀🍀🍀🍀🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲.
Great episode, great team work. Glad to see Hunter doing more than camera.
Hunter thought you had to let Shawn show you up on the screws! Haha
Saw the mini knipex at 39:05! And the mention of the Leatherman when they were taking the glovebox apart. Paul and the guys should do an EDC (Every Day Carry) pocket dump and show us what he carries in his pockets!
Just a tip, when welding up a worn shaft, turn or grind it about a 1/4" under size before welding . If you don't , after maching it to size, the thin bit of your weld can give you issues.
Your box with two gauges in it; cut the top and the sides of the front face. Then tip it back vertical and weld up that monster gap we all know you can and itll look much more deliberate. Cheers 🍻 just my 2 cents
It is your rat back, you can do it the way you want and no one can say what it should look like as long as you are happy with it. Love what you all do and like the videos!!!!!!!
Paul you should also add some USB ports along with your cigarette lighter for phones, camera battery chargers, lights, etc....your family and crew rock! Keep up the good work and looking forward to the completion of this sweet truck.
Hey Paul, as a owner of a 379 Peterbilt with a similar fuel tank set up, I highly suggest running a piece of C channel between your fuel tanks for the crossover line. It will help support and protect it from road debris and gremlins... HOPE YOU ACTUALLY SEE THIS CONMENT!!! Doubt it.
You beat me to it by 4 minutes lol.
Coming together nicely. Maybe a couple pieces of exhaust pipe set into the dash on an angle for those 2 gauges so you can see them easily? Might look better than "the box".
I love that you don't edit out your screwups.... Makes you relatable....
That guage mount was beautiful Paul I don't care what anyone says!
You guys really make my mornings, keep it up. should do something with the crossover hose. Maybe put it inside a metal tube and weld it to the frame
Go for 2 6*6 speakers pointing one at each person to. Reate a surround effect. Then mount two 6*9 horizontal below and behind the seat to finish of the surround with a bit of bass.
That thing is going to be so damned cool! Can't wait to see the finished product!
Put those guages in some ips plumbing elbows! Would look sweet coming out of the top of the dash like little smoke stacks! Also if you get a dual voice coil 6x9 for the dash then you can still get right and left audio out of a single speaker!
Always amazing & fun with the Rats.... With that said: That equalizer/crossover hose between the tanks is a disaster waiting to happen. It's killing most of us =)) I think you said a while back you were going to work on it. I know you want it to work as a driveshaft loop, but it's just a bit too soft! Thanks for all the vids!
It's going to seem like a weird idea, but lipstick on the tube you were cutting the hood to fit would make a mark for where you needed to cut. I used lipstick when putting in strike plates on entry doors to know where to make my cuts for the locks. Put the lipstick on the deadbolt lock then operate it a few times and it left a perfect mark of where you needed the hole.
Paul, Shawn and Hunter, this build is my classic favorite 💛 it’s so BA 🌶️ , Also (your yard art looks closer than 6’ to that hydrant chief)🚒🚒🚒❤️
Hay maybe for all the people who don’t like your box on top of the dash, round the sides down so it matches the roundness of the truck.. like everything you do.
I enjoy every video.
That's custom Chad fab box would be Beautiful in my Zuki, or Under the dash out of sight in the Ratback Wrecker, you do great work Chad, we all have haters but that just means they're still watching ✅️
no matter How Much you Work On Something there's Always a Debby Downer to trash on your Hard Work Paul I Say If you're Happy with Something you Did Let them Hate but Remember You Got Where yOu are Being who You Are God Bless you All At Fab Rats!
