- This is the 2.0L engine performing Sub 3 (Transmission Fluid Drain & Fill). Service interval is usually followed in the Maintenance Minder on the dash because it detects your driving behaviour and would actually calculate when its time for transmission fluid service. Depending on your driving habit from 48k through 80k when the minder will come on. But if you want to protect you transmission from failing, for me, i would perform this service @ 48-50k.
The fluid capacity for both 2.0L & 1.5L ENGINE SIZE is on the video so keep watching.

Removing the air box is a waste of time. Use a small funnel with long tube. It is much easier
I put 3.7 liter in my 2018 civic cvt transmission 2.0 l engine and I didn’t check level bolt and drive 900 km so my transmission is still good or dead plz help
This saved me a lot of time. This is spot on for 2.0L motor with CVT for 2019 Civic

This is the most informative of all videos on this subject. Great tip on how to access the filler plug. This saves time removing the front cover and air filter assembly to access the plug. Also great tip on purposely 'overfilling' , shifting through the gears and subsequently draining the excess to get the right level.

I drain/refill every third oil change on ramps.. Cold engine drain, room temp cvt fluid. I measure the drain pan and 4 qts out. 4 qts. go in. Easy...

Great video. I am pleased to see that it is 3.5 L on the refill. I got about 3.3L in before it started dripping out but oddly it seems like it was overfilled at the factory because I drained about 3.8.

Half of those quarter turn belly pan fasteners fell of my wife's crv. I replaced them with J nuts and screws from local hardware store. I drain and fill our cvt's every spring. I've used Amalie cvt fluid & Castrol cvt/atf fluid with no problems what so ever. I figure $20 a year for fluid is cheap insurance.

Drain and fill only gets roughly half the oil out. Flushing system gets it all out. Just my thoughts.

There is a filter right below the fill hole.
Transmission has a filter.
More advanced but compared to 8th Gen, this is a workout.

This was the best video I've seen on how to do this with a 2.0. Followed it to a T and was able to do the job myself. Thanks a bunch! I had an issue though where I filled it with 3.9 qt and smoke came out of the trans fill hole. I added another 0.5qt and it started coming out of the check bolt and everything was fine on a test drive. Do you think there was any damage done?
Short .5 qt is not a big deal, so don't worry. 😀

Good time to check the transmission vent tube as well. They get clogged constantly. On my 1.5t is was clogged at 27k , and I've been checking them on all my friends cars with CVT or auto even Hondas. They're all clogged. Doesn't matter the miles it seems. I clean them, then turn them facing the right instead of forward to try and help with dirt and debris coming in from the grill , which I think causes this issue?

@@JO-fk1bg if you look at the top of the transmission, go south west from the fluid fill hole. It's right under the air intake tube. Almost right where the trans meets up with the engine. There's pictures on Google. Every one I've checked has been clogged.
Why didnt you drop the pan and replace the trans fluid
Because the job is only drain and fill . I would prolly do a pan drop on a nxt transmission service doe. 🫡

About how many miles or kilometers were on this car when you did this change? Is this the first time you've changed the transmission fluid on this car? Did you get a Sub 3 message on your dashboard?
I believed the car had 80k on it more or less (can't remember), sub 3 was on the dash. And it was the first transmission service for this car.
I changed the transmission fluid and I broke 2 bolts, one of the filter that goes inside the pan and the other from the pan. I leave it like that and now my car shuts off when I drive around and make a stop.
What can be the issue and how can I fix it?
I'm sorry to hear about your problem. Check that the level is good and make sure that you use the oem spec fluids then extract the broken bolts including the one for the filter and replace with new bolts then test it out.

I wonder what the point of having two different style drain plug magnets was for? The 1.5 magnet is longer and skinny. The 2.0 is small and blunt. The 2.0 level check bolt is different too. The 1.5 is a 12mm plug. Must be different CVTs for 2.0 and 1.5?
Yes they're different cvt transmissions. One for turbo and one for non-turbo.

@@Cargorage The part# is for the CVT transmission fluid filter. I also ordered it to replace the old one. I believe Honda does not include it as a regular change but I am changing it because my filler plug was not on the filler hole for an unknown period and to be safe I want to change it.

Yes, that's is not a regular maintenance in our shop, so I didn't do it. Doing that is a complete service. Yeah that's awesome GL.

I didn't measure it sorry, but when u see the fluid drizzle that's when you install the level check plug back in.
Isn't there a small filter you have to change? You have to take the battery and tray out to get at it.
I haven' done the transmission fluid filter. But i believe you have to remove the transmission pan in order to access thr filter.
There's also a filter behind the oil cooler. I've talked to my Honda tech friends about it, and they had no idea lol. It's a pretty easy job to do too. Cheap filter as well. I'm going to do mine at 50k, then again at 100k with the filter in the pan. When do you recommend having the valves adjusted on the 1.5t ?

Any info on the transmission filter? If changing it at the same time as the fluid is recommended?
Normally the filter is done at the second transmission service, but if you want to do it every service, you can do it too.
Great video, wish i wouldve seen it sooner. I drained my fluid before i put the car in low gear. Can i change it from park to l with the car off or will that damage the transmission since i drained the fluid? Thanks. I dont know how i can access the fill plug without doing so.
Thats the not gonna hurt the vehicle sir, as long the engine is off.

Why not to change even both filters ?! The oil was dark enough which makes me think probably the filters were good to go too
I would do it if it was my own car, or just wait on another 50k km then i would do the fluid and filter change.

No, but it's better at operating temperature, basically that's when the radiator fan kicks in. Then drain and fill and run it through gears and after that check the level from the level checker plug. That's it.
@@Cargorage just to clarify, we drain and fill, then run it through the gears which raises the temperature to operating temp, then check the level. Is that correct?
Thr engine should be at operating temp B4 draining the trans fluid then drain fluid. Fill and then ran through gears for just 3-5sec each gears.

What about if your car is on ramps? How would you go about checking the fill line bolt?
The car has to be leveled front and back to check the fluid level.

I added xtra fluid then drained the exccess fluid just to b accurate with level. Pls watch thr video to check the level.

Should be at normal operating temp. These vehicle has no dip stick, so use the oil level checker plug (side).

Bought a Honda civic 2016 with 90,000 miles on it. I have no idea if the fluids ever been changed. Should I change it? Or, Is it too late to change it?
If i were you i'd change it. Just to start fresh with the maintenance schedule, so then you know when the next service is.
I was looking at many civics before i decided on the one that i bought. It was at 65k kms about 40k miles. This is the exact reason why i nought it

Yes, change it now. I bought my 2017 Civic Ex-T with 70,000 miles on it, and there was no maintenance record for a transmission fluid change. I took it to a transmission specialist, and they told me the fluid had never been changed. So, I went ahead and changed it. A new CVT costs about $8000 including labor so, it’s smarter to stay on top of maintenance. They recommend I change the transmission fluid every three years or 36,000 miles. And, the car drives better now. It’s like I have better access to the engine’s power.

There is no transmission filter to change?
There is. You'll have to remove the transmission pan in order to get to it.
There's also another cartridge type filter behind the CVT fluid heat exchange thing or whatever they call it. If it's your first drain and fill at 30,000 miles don't bother with the filters. Just clean the magnet well. Then your next drain and fill do the filters. Or do them every time if you really want to. Most dealerships don't even bother with those filters. My local dealership didn't even know about the filter , or stock the thing 😆.

For me i would do it in the nxt transmission service whenever the maintenance minder #3 comes back on the second time ( thats probably from 160-200k km)

It's an 18inch crush washer, I just did my trans the other day. 2016 Honda Civic with 48k miles. I bought them on Amazon $5 bucks for 20, fit like a glove, the bolt to the trans is a 17 inch wrench or socket. Cheers 🥂!

Transmission fluid filter, you mean? Remove the pan to access the filter. If you're on top of your fluid maintenance. You don't have to change it at first service. I would wait at second or third service interval.

Is this all the same for the 2022?
There are similarities for sure but ill confirm that once i checked out a 2022 model.
I just confirmed that the capacity for 2.0L engine is different and there is also added step to 1.5L engine. But otherwise drain and fill location is the same.

2.0 L is 2.7L tfluid, make sure to check the with the level checker to confirm

Overfilling can cause foamy fluid during operation, so always follow the recommended capacity.
