- Obsidian was fantastic! Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen finally get their big sapphic adventure!
Rather than doing a review like usual, for this Adventure Time Distant Lands special, I am going to be making multiple videos focusing on different topics. This first one is about the comedy in Obsidian, where I discuss which jokes and humor resonated with me and/or which comedic moments I found interesting.
Other video topics I mentioned that you can expect in the future:
Finn (and Jake) in the Obsidian timeline.
Young Marcy and her mom (Elise).
Glass Kingdom, Glassboy, and Molto Larvo.
And I didn’t mention this in the video, but I’m thinking of discussing Bonnibel and Marceline via song analyses (dissecting and discussing the lyrics, feel, and meaning of It’s Funny, Woke Up, Monster, and Eternity With You, as well the actual events happening during the songs).

My favorite joke was when young Marceline excitedly turns the lights on when she enters the bunker and then immediately turns them off again when she sees the skeletons. It's morbid but so bluntly relatable.
Honestly that was dark! It made feel really bad for young Marcy, and when she said "Party!" I was like 🥺
That was kinda funny but also very sad at the same time~

It gets funnier/brilliant when you remember Bonney met the Vampire Queen at Marceline's punk concert.
PB likes her punk music.
Watching Marcy and PB enjoying their domestic bliss together after a decade of watching Adventure Time made my heart absolutely melt. And the closing shot on the concert shirt's origin gave me so many feelings. I loved Obsidian so dang much.
Considering the centuries of Hell they’ve both gone through in their lives, they deserve to be happy with each other. Each of them was their light in the darkness of the apocalypse.

It’s crazy how we first saw the signs of their relationship all the way back in 2011 with ‘Go With Me’. 9 whole years. This story was in the making for almost an entire decade!

I stroked my screen and whispered "it's him," reverently when Choose Goose came on screen. What's that crazy bird doing? Why has he turned to a life of crime? Who's the dry-skinned sicko running around Ooo? These are questions I must have answered.
Also "I consider Cave-Hag a compliment" is my favorite line from the special because it's something I would 100% say irl.

i love how even though bubblegum is a lot more moderate she still makes several manoeuvres and lines of dialogue in this ep that reflect a complete lack of social understanding
I don't think it's social misunderstanding but instead just her psychopathic side
@@LizLosingIt i saw someone assess that pb has a learned moral code of right and wrong but is lacking on empathy, while marceline is truly empathetic but decides to be selective as to who is worth that empathy.
im not sure if this is entirely true because marceline still hurts people she cares about while pb can occasionally help out bad people cos she sees theyre in pain, but it is a fun starting point. i think it's more likely pb started off purehearted but learned SAVAGERY over time while marceline learned to push people away, both consequences of being in a world where it's kill or be killed.

@@tipsy634 I don’t think Marceline chose to deliberately hurt the people she love just because; but it’s strategically done to cope with trauma and pain. Her empathy made her subjected with a track record of pain, of loved ones walking out of her life due to inevitable circumstances. It’s the small child in her still saying “If people run away it’s because I want them to”.
"She got pants now" made me laugh so hard when I first watched "Obsidian".

Yeah! And it's also a nice detail because it's so cute that the angriest song Marcy can manage to do at PB is that she used her brush, showing how much they care and love each other, and how much better they are now. Definitely one of my favorite bits in the episode.
It was very cute, I'm glad they really played up the wholesome side of their relationship to offset the backstory portion.

I still get misty-eyed just thinking about it.
Whilst it's sad that this is probably the last time we'll see Marcy and Bonnie, I'm glad that the backstory of their relationship was finally explained to give Bubbline fans some closure. It's also satisfying that Marceline is finally content and happy for the first time in her life
Alternatively, the moderation poster being underneath more recent posters signifies that the domineering part of her life is over, but is still a thing that she needs to remember happened, which fits in with the special and its emphasis on pb and marcy's growth as people while still being aware of what they've done in the past
That's a great reading of it. Some people pointed out that we saw that poster before unobstructed in "Son of Rap Bear," so it checks out that citizens feel comfortable partially obscuring it with other posters and flyers in the present when PB has backed off due to self-moderating how she rules the candy peeps. Including that poster in this special works on a lot of layers, which is so cool!
What we hear:

What glass people hear:
"I'm so mad at the coconut"
That part corresponds with "I don't really care about the stomping on the coconut."
"I'm so glad that I woke up" became "I'm so mad at the coconut" which y'know what... I can kinda sorta see (err, hear?) how that was misheard.

"gone fission" written on a nuclear bomb was by far my favourite subtle background joke from the special :)
I kept asking myself whether to feature it or not because it was literally the opening joke. Passed on it cause I really had no comment besides it being an amusing pun+scribble. I tried to limit the amount of jokes for this video where I had little to say beyond finding the joke humorous.
Excellent analysis! One bit you forgot to mention is that the scorpion was actually a very cleverly hidden reference by the writers. It's a 'Radscorpion' from Fallout! Get it? He's rad because of his dope attire.
I feel like it's funnier for me without a reference to anything, just as pure random humor. (Also I haven't played any Fallout games.)

PB's "meh" when seeing Finn's junk really cracked me up. He was in love with her for so long and to know she's unimpressed makes that moment so much better.
I personally laughed at the "she got pants now" joke. I don't know why that got me but it just did. I always look forward to your adventure time videos can't wait for the next one.

@@mobydickies8135 I don't think they are literally rules, but any media product that serve a general audience (as opposed to a specific market) avoids LGBT or other controversial issues. The problem comes when you try to show this in countries where Lgbt is frowned upon at best and illegal at worst. This type of behavior would get the show banned from being shown in places like the middle east. If you are a CN executive, and you are left between either losing money and getting money, I think you can predict what you will choose.
I love the fact that they're finished with the adventure time story arc so now they're just fucking around and being wholesome. amazing.

YEARS after Adventure Time ended and this guy is STILL making me realize that this show was MUCH deeper than I gave it credit for. I suppose binge watching a good chunk of it all at once was a mistake. The show was never meant to be binge watched (The specials aside of course) and some questions were never meant to have solid answers, only speculative theories at best.
Distant Lands, though, is a fantastic opportunity to dive back in for some much better character development and world building that the show didn't have a chance of doing due to... a number of reasons probably, but mostly do to the fact that it... well... ended.
Here's hoping that we get some more answers in the next two specials! (I'm personally hoping we see whatever became of Finn's and Huntress Wizard's relationship)
I think binge watching for the very first viewing ever might not be ideal (although it would no doubt very from person to person). I think maybe chunks of 7 episodes at a time every few days (or once a week) is what I would recommend though.
On rewatches though, the show works excellently both in binge form and not.

Adventure time was truly a grand adventure through the fun of childhood to the dark and light sides of the future

I like how the glass people praises marceline for saving them but she only save them because she was mad at bubblegum 😆
This episode was amazing. I'm definitely glad we saw two of the best characters hanging out together again. Bubbline will love on forever!
I like how Marcy and pb’s differences and dualism first ruins their relationship then holds it together. At first they’re too different for each other, pb is the controlling perfectionist who cares too much, Marcy is the impulsive rebel who doesn’t care enough. Pb wants to control Marcy and Marcy doesn’t want to be controlled. They only realize that they are what each other needs when they admit their flaws. It’s amazing how well their relationship ties in with the moral of self acceptance

My favorite joke has to be juice goose's rhyme because I didn't see the cart of moisturizer at the start so when he said "non the wiser" I was actually thinking the writers had to come up with something on the spot to rhyme with that.

To me it was definitely Marceline playing three people (including Bonnie’s relative reaction) and the NOOOOOOOOO to the ominous disclosure of Marcy managing to overcome her internal issues.
This video is just Uncivilized Elk demanding more AT merch and I AM HERE FOR IT.
--Also Marceline in Obsidian really helped me bridge that gap you mentioned during your Stakes video. Her younger self is kind of a huge jerk and given what we know about her childhood, it's easy to see how she's spent a lot of time doubling down on her worst traits. She's also had a long life and distance from her initial transformation may have helped as well.
I was thinking of that video as I watched this episode too, it makes far more sense why Marcy's character was the way she was

I wish the best for your future videos on this, I'm looking forward to hear you talk more about Marcy and Pb's relationship, including how Marcy's childhood ties in with who she became, how she's different now, how PB is different too but not unfamiliar, and maybe that flashback at the end which takes place while Pb appears to be in her middle teens

Another favourite joke of mine was PB being so proud that all the root beer came from her body, like its probably the only time her candy powers have come in handy

This special sort of made me understand the relationship of Finn and Princess Bubblegum all because Finn’s towel came off while PB can care less. The whole Marceline and PB shipping didn’t work for me in the show but in the special, they put the effort that I admire then the effort they did from the original.
Yeah that scene just kind of screams "yeah she was gay all along" which is a bit of a retcon but it kind of makes since. Especially if you look at episodes like broko where a guy literally drives himself insane trying to get a date with pb. It was like "it's really not finns fault shes just like this"
I mean, pb is way older than Finn, they have a huge age gap which make it hard for them to be in an relationship. Pb probably saw Finn as a cute little brother since Finn was just a 12-17 year old teenager.(Tbh if it was in real life, Pb will be arrested by FBI if she actually had feelings for a little boy like Finn>
I always shipped marciline with Finn
That scene makes me wonder something else.
Even if youre gay, youd probably get embarrassed if your friend and representative just showed up fucking naked one day, and Pb was VERY worried earlier about not being embarrassed in front of the glass people again.
I know by the end of the ep she doesnt care about any of that anymore, since they have broken their looking glass self and stopped mocking people for showing their flaws, but HOW MANY TIMES HAS FINN ENDED UP NAKED for her to have such a resigned reaction?

I am SO EXCITED to see you get into the new post war ruins. I really like how it seems immediately after the mushroom war, humans went back to painting on every surface they came into contact with like we used to in prehistoric times.
