    Oh my god I have to say when I’m a doctor I hope I get to live in scrubs. When I did my CR surgery work experience I wore scrubs and I felt so comfy all day and I want my own collection for home one day. You can buy them online.
    Scrubs really are the best pyjamas everyone should have a pair hahaha

      I would also very much like to live in scrubs, but completely depends - has to always be appropriate for the setting, so maybe not during your psychiatry blocks! :D

      PostGradMedic i mean of course the setting must be right but if I could walk around the shops go to the cinema etc in scrubs you bet I would. So comfy. I’m a Med applicant I’m not in yet but during work experience in theatres I lived in scrubs and I felt free I didn’t feel hot bother I didn’t have to think about whether I should wear that with this etc because I was in navy scrubs all day everyday. Hahaa. Great video also glad me cushings made it to your background. I’m a cushingoid from steroids and he’s a fascinating character

    The evidence for banning the white coat in the NHS is very dodgy…but working as a hospital doctor in the NHS, I am for ditching the white coat. Imagine running cardiac arrests and MET calls in those coats…you will not appreciate the extra layers in such a heated environment. The major downside though is the lack of pockets, and that's where a coat with pockets would come useful.…that's why you see some of the female doctors wearing a pouch/handbag, and those are most definitely a source of infection. My choice of attire are scrubs…don't need to think about what to wear to work, lots of pockets, no need to do laundry, recognised by public and healthcare professionals due to its association with healthcare, and high potential for personalisation (colours, individuals or departments can have their names customised onto the scrubs).

      I'm equally a fan of scrubs, basically wearing pyjamas the whole time! Feel the pockets though, I feel like once I've got my ID badge, phone and notebook in there I look a bit lopsided!

      I think short sleeve white coat is already a thing in some countries, we could have just done the same

    I'm a PA student in the US and I'm going to wear a white coat over scrubs when I work. Not because they look cool (they are) but because studies have repeatedly shown that patients have more confidence and trust in their MDs/PAs when they wear a white coat. It makes them feel reassured and I'm willing to sacrifice some comfort if it means the patient will feel better. Furthermore, the "evidence" against white coats is shaky at best.

      you can literally see whose a doctor in the uk by the way they dress(like university/college post docs/professors)
      i guess its a bit like wigs for lawyers

    I personally think wearing your smart clothes in accordance to the hospital infection control is much better than white coat (I wear lab coat every day 😅) but also hair white coat are good when you can't be bother to wear smart clothes hahaha. Great video btw

    with the thing you said about people accessorizing and having kind of their own style, i wonder if there are any doctors that are tf2 fans and purposefully dress subtly like medic aha, (although that would require a coat)

    I live in the U.S. and the two different times I had to go in for surgery, the two different doctors who did the surgery came to see me before and after the surgery and they weren't wearing a white coat, just scrubs. I had to go in for a follow-up checkup with each doctor, and one of them wasn't wearing her white coat. Sometimes I have gone to see a doctor and they aren't always wearing a white coat. Of course, the doctors will wear their white coat, but that's just expected. No intimidation. It makes me feel comfortable that a doctor is professional and there for me and will help me. I think the doctor's here in the U.S., don't always wear a white coat when seeing their patients. Some patients prefer it because that's how it's been for a long time and it makes some people feel reassured they'll be taken care of.

    Do white coats get given or did you have to buy your own?

    • @OllieBurtonMed
      @OllieBurtonMed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you need them for labs they're usually given, but as a medical student you don't wear them anywhere else

      It's just our national guidelines I'm afraid, no real books or anything, just the UK NHS infection control guidelines

    Honestly, I was never excited to wear a white coat ever. It was cool at first, but I always prefered wearing business casual. Anyone else agrees?

      medically real doctors need their patients to feel free to share their health concerns and any indoor outdoor activities

    To be honest, this anti-white coat theme in the UK seems a bit sketchy, especially since the US couldn't replicate these results.
    Regardless, I prefer ditching the white coat, so I ain't complaining. Scrubs alone are very comfortable to wear.

    • @borisjohnson1473
      @borisjohnson1473 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No it seems correct. "since the US couldn't replicate these results" It has, but just has a different health policy...and still no national healthcare system.

    • @HenIchaer
      @HenIchaer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@borisjohnson1473And good for them. The national system in the UK is terrible. And the white coats were ditched to degrade doctors even further, which has been happening for a long time now. In the US doctors are more knowledgeable and much more respected. They have a higher position in the society because the hard work they do is recognised, whereas in the UK they get shafted both by the people and the government.

    The white coat doesn't make you a better doctor NOR the absence negates your studies. What matters is to 'Do No Harm'. Cultural norms change when people change. The white coat is just a cultural norm. Follow the science.
