There is nothing wrong with praising the Faulconer soundtrack. I agree with you that the piece used emphasized every little moment of that transformation making it all the more dramatic. The way the song goes from sad/somewhat calm to more intense as Goku's rage builds fit so well. Not to mention that the main chord kept repeating throughout the transformation and didn't complete itself until goku finally transformed. When I think of super saiyan in musical form I still think of that song.
I don't really know which one to choose, it's hard for me, the dub soundtrack was more iconic, but the original made scene feel more dark, the only negative was that we heard it many times previously. Ehh, I'll go with the dub also then.
Thank you man for watching the video! And yeah as I much as I love Shunsuke Kikuchi work, there is something equally chilling about the Faulconer soundtrack🙂 . I think both deserve equal respect! Although I can't help but wonder that if Kikuchi composed tracks like Cell's theme or the SSJ3 theme, would fans instantly start praising it?
The new one isn't bad but it's still a victim of that bright plastic look. It doesn't matter if something is HD, if it's all pretty colors and stays flat it's just not impressive. The original along with its extra build up is leagues better because of this, the artwork is detailed and fantastic, with the coloring while dated fits the mood perfectly. We don't need bright colors to see what's going on the dark tones are supposed to be that way. Everything about new DB artwork is so pointy and sharp and while that does look crisp it just feels too superficial like it wouldn't hurt to round out some of the art. I miss the old days of Akira Toriyama design, this new age just feels like it's meant for cheap mass production to milk a franchise.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Not to mention Bruce's music really made it popular in the first place. It was so epic. Without it and the yelling goku, this entire transformation scene is dull as hell.
The important aspect to note about the new one is that although it is made by Yuya Takahashi, it is apparently heavily corrected by (or to fit according to the modern DragonBall character design of) Tadayoshi Yamamuro. It makes one wonder how an original Yuya Takahashi sequence would stand when compared to the orginal.
Going of the genga (what little of it there is available) he seemed to be on model so it's hard to say exactly how corrected he actually was. I think we would've seen a major change if he intentionally ignored the character sheets or if the special had a different character designer. Though it's hard to say if the style we saw in 114 was something developed overtime since his earlier work on modern dragonball or if it was always his approach to drawing Dragonball🤔

Freiza’s attack switching from a ball to a beam was something I’ve noticed before but I always figured it was a way to show how fast it was going. imo, the manga is the best. cant really beat the expressions, and honestly i dont know how they are going to animate that, for example, small detail like white/blank pupils, really adds to the desperations, fear, restlessness, and anger of those characters of goku team. and probably cant really do that because they cant just randomly change the eye color, maybe they could, i dunno, i would like to see that. another is like goku's sweat dropped indicating that he's upset/troubled/worried etc. and pronounced black strokes/lines on gokus eyes. really sells goku's face from being helpless, and getting reaaally angry. i was like "oh shit frieza, you dont wanna do this...dont push it!" when i read it as a kid. but of course i give credit to the OG DBZ and the remake to prolong the scene as the source material is quite short.
*Akira Toriyama* is indeed the Author and Illustrator (but not of the third) of all three Dragon Ball (DB, DBZ, DBS) I was wrong to think so. I am however personally a fan of *Yuya Takahashi's* take on Akira Toriyama's art
Original is definitely great, but for me they are both quite equal in terms of build-up. I liked how they changed it so Piccolo took the beam for Goku. The yell was a fantastic edition. And the Funi dub Bruce background music enhanced this scene BEYOND belief! But for the first time one of the ONLY drawbacks is the style choice. Immediately you can see how AWFUL Krillin looks at the start. The stylish aura was quite amazing to see. The "pwik" moment where it clicks for Goku was really well-done, an actual balance between source material faithfulness and taking liberties. But what I hate is that new hairstyle that they're using for SSJ. Where it's SO detailed, with the yellows looking gross and saturated yet too dull at the same time? The original ssj style has ALWAYS been my favorite. Where it's a softer yellow for the brightness, with a sorta orangey-yellow shadow, often being more yellow than orange. The original will be on-top because the struggle it showed for Goku obtaining the SSJ form. And the fact his eyes go white and then he lets out an EXPLOSIVE yell is just.. 👌. It's what made this scene ICONIC. Usually filler or changed material isn't as good as the manga. But the fact Akira just breezed through it felt so lackluster when I first read the manga. For the first time I actually quite enjoy both almost on equal footing. With the original, of course, having an advantage.
Wondering if you could ever compare them to the Ulimate Tenkaichi scenes, they reanimated tons of iconic scenes for that game so would be interesting to see your take on the differences
To me the original is better if only for one simple reason. The first time seeing Goku snap and go super saiyan was one of the coolest moments from the whole run. With the new one it doesn't have that surprise and cool factor that the original had.
I always thought the ball that hits piccolo turning into a beam was part of the attack. Like the instant it hits him it became like a piercing beam that shot through him in both directions. Freeza did have some unique attacks. Or it was a beam the whole time but only became visible after it hit him because of the speed of it since they didn't have much time to react to it.
take my opinion with a grain of salt, but i feel like goku vs frieza would really shine with keisuke masunaga, what with his fast and furious approach with the dbz fights. now back to the main video, i like both. when the ssj transformation is in play, i feel like goku's rage is more expressed in the original one, but you cannot deny that the effects on the remake is superb, from the background in piccolo being shot, to the effects when krillin blew up to the seeping yellow aura when the transformation takes place. i also like how the death beam was shown as if it was almost instantaneous and sudden. all in all, i prefer the remake due to the more superb effects, but you can say what you want. i have no right to judge you, and you have no right to judge me.
Both but for me personally the older one cuz the right we saw that art more after training so ssj was trained to only look like that but also in strength
The reason he did match it too the manga is because the anime and manga are different timelines hence why both goku's are different ages and why the anime and manga have slight and sometimes drastic changes like different dialog, transformation, and how interactions so he was doing a remake of the anime's scene not the manga's version of the scene.
@@zelohendricks51 They actually are all the difference are in the JP dub I've watched manga Goku is older and in the Cell arc ya know how in DBZK Vegeta didn't go ssj when going the distraction shot for Gohan and Goku, also the manga showed that Goku was clearly using Astral projection when he touched Gohan's shoulder and then told him to him his combined power and they shot cell into literally space none of that happened in the anime like at in both dubs also in dbs Goku is smarter he also trained and found a way to combine Grade 4 ssj with SSB to make MSSB after the U6 tourment which is stronger than SSBE which is SSB and Super Vegeta combined. Goku black in the manga also went through SSJ and SSJ2 before Rose and even made a more in depth explanation about rose saying it's different from blue in thar it's just Zamasu's ki interacting with the body rather then SSB which is god and SSJ combined. Goku in the manga also tells everyone the truth about the T.O.P. Oh in the DBZ manga Trunks says that Gotenks defused due to the timelimt and the next page is Gohan half way done with the 1hr awakening ritual, also in the manga Goku never shows Goten and Trunks SSJ3 so when they unlock it they think it's a new form. See different timelines and Toriyama himself even acknowledges them as different timelines/continuities and he and Toyotaro consider the manga the most cannon because they had complete control and the dbs movies use the manga characters because Toriyama writes them and forces the team to follow his movie scripts exactly as written. So as you can see you have absolutely know idea about what your talking about whereas I who has seen literally everything in dragonball as I do with things I grew up with or really like and several DB TH-camrs can attest to the differences I just listed. Now Xenoblade X-3 (nice name by the way) you have a goodnight.
So this is one of the very VERY few times I actually dislike Toriyama's choices on a splash panel. The angle is really interesting (view is Frieza's POV) but Goku's hair looks weird and the line of his body when he's standing also looks a bit forced? Stiff? Posed maybe. While imo the build up is very good in the classic scene, the characters look better in the modern version. Then again, I am a big Yuya Takahashi fan. I'm subbed to his YT channel after all! ED: Oh yeah, so I never considered the beam a mistake. I look at it as an artistic choice to show the viewer the path the attack took for dramatic effect and that as it reaches the target it speeds up so fast it leaves almost an after image. Compare how in a lot of 80s animation car head lights left a kind of square/blocky after image for dramatic effect.
I don't understand what Toei is waiting for to continue with Dragon ball Super. Masako nozawa won't live forever and this year she will be 86 years old! If we assume that the new series airs this year and lasts at least 3 years, it means that masako will be 89 by then. Will she still be able to play Goku by then? Japanese fans are not going to accept another voice for the character (neither am I).
I fucking love Takahashi but I love the original more because of the hair that’s what I see super Sayain one as when The mutation is used for the first time not as the super spiky hair like we see in Super Saiyan Sayain 2 or a little bit of perfected Super Saiyan
Didn't the video game Ultimate Tenkaichi(i think) also remake the scene? I guess, you didn't mention it cus it was a shot by shot remake of the Anime version?
While OG has a special place in my heart, I gotta say... the remake is far better paced overall. The original has the usual pacing problems that affected the entire Frieza arc, and the build up is just too long, to the point of being distracting. Particularly the moments between Krilin's death and Goku snapping. You end up screaming to Frieza "Just finish him off already!!". In the remake, on the other hand, the build up lingers just long enough to feel Goku's anger, but without over staying its welcome. However, the remake lacks Goku's yell. Yes, it's true that's closer to the manga, but the scream was the one addition that elevated the scene and made it even more iconic than it already was. If the remake added the yell while keeping roughly the same pace, then it'd be pretty much the definitive version.
@Alex McDonald People still use that as an excuse of it being "bad" when its usage wasnt executed in the best way at times. I disagree with the Ginyu Force theme not fitting at all.
@Alex McDonald Because they are at the end of the day an elite fighting squad of the biggest asshole in the universe. It helps the story when you remind the viewers that a threat is present. They are a "parody" yet I see them beat the crap out of a Saiyan whose an asshole who we all assumed was a beast, a broke the neck of a child so easily. Plus, they were accompanied by silly music anyway.

While the art is more polished it takes away from the look of exhaustion making the situation feel less important . the transformation was so effortless it made his emotion seem less along the line of losing people in his heart and more like he had coffee spilled on his favorite shoes . it isnt a rush explosion that stays constant its just oh pop im stronger.
I mean that's how it was in the original manga, the transformation was quick, with no build up and no scream also.
@@jasonone8726 thats a book this is visiual not only are they speaking theres no space constraints and theres time to fill the execution done for dramatic effect is vastly better then pop done lets move on
@@alexispryde5415 Doesn't matter what it is, it's how it was done, it's a faithful adaptation, the Z anime just did it much differently, good differently.
@@jasonone8726 thats literally the weakest excuse - there are things done in book form that do not translate to the same effect in visiual media and vice-versa example it - literally every show or movie done to book 100% no fill no reduce have become resounding failures called dry rushed and confusing . second example if they took infinity war from the comics at 100% recreation not only would people pop up that you never knew but the entire movie would be over in 20 mins on a constant jump from fight to fight literally nobody wants that . this is a classic case of you have no idea what it really means to say you want it 100% manga translated - final example - keep in mind that the creator himself made it with the intent to draw out the emotional effect and when asked said the original convayed his intent. so not only is your point arguing against the reality of the situation its literally against the creator himself . i realize it takes effort but really taking a look at what it is you are asking for is important .
@@jasonone8726 also note - the version that you call better is also called - dry ,rushed, empty.boring, and confusing at points . so.... do you want it to be sucessfull to bring in people and subsequently continue or do you want it to open to mid to low reviews near everyone doesnt like it and it fails to dye on the vine . mind you the creator was so pissed he came out of retirement to fix this .
The tingling in the back was too strong LoL
facts hahaha
the switching of the hair is my favorite
Yamamuro’s style is beautiful when done right.
Yo I love this video. Maybe the best one yet.
imo, the manga is the best. cant really beat the expressions, and honestly i dont know how they are going to animate that, for example, small detail like white/blank pupils, really adds to the desperations, fear, restlessness, and anger of those characters of goku team. and probably cant really do that because they cant just randomly change the eye color, maybe they could, i dunno, i would like to see that. another is like goku's sweat dropped indicating that he's upset/troubled/worried etc. and pronounced black strokes/lines on gokus eyes. really sells goku's face from being helpless, and getting reaaally angry. i was like "oh shit frieza, you dont wanna do this...dont push it!" when i read it as a kid. but of course i give credit to the OG DBZ and the remake to prolong the scene as the source material is quite short.
No
To be honest the the orginal anime has a better building up of the moment then the manga.
@@-_-Copycat-_- it wasn't meant to be a build up in the manga. It was meant to be a snap
*Akira Toriyama* is indeed the Author and Illustrator (but not of the third) of all three Dragon Ball (DB, DBZ, DBS) I was wrong to think so. I am however personally a fan of *Yuya Takahashi's* take on Akira Toriyama's art
Yup that dudes a beast. He should have did all of super
hey, a demonic spirit has possession of your account, does it? bet it been attempting to ominously link you with it, right?
she playing the wild card game, only the demon is pretending to be in that situation.
Thanks again for featuring me this week!
Ayyy man no problem!
I love how at the time of me watching this there is a single dislike and like 200 likes
I like the new one
Ay I have been following the featured artist for a while preety cool to see him
I will never not see Gohans foot under Piccolo now
The original was🔥
I can never unsee gohans feet under piccolo now..... *sobs

Original of course
Sato brought Toriyama's art to life
Imagine if Frieza killed Gohan
idk if he would transform since only reason he went ssj is because krillen died twice so you can't wish him back
with the same dragon balls
Same thing will happen 🤗
I love your videos! Can you do a breakdown of DB Legends Artstyles and give some more info on the artists?
Wondering if you could ever compare them to the Ulimate Tenkaichi scenes, they reanimated tons of iconic scenes for that game so would be interesting to see your take on the differences
The shot turning into a beam is a simple animation decision, to give that emphasis and drama to the scene at hand.
22 years watching DBZ and I never noticed Gohan’s feet in that Piccolo scene
To me the original is better if only for one simple reason. The first time seeing Goku snap and go super saiyan was one of the coolest moments from the whole run. With the new one it doesn't have that surprise and cool factor that the original had.
I don't agree with his assessment of the music, or the gohan scene, but everything else is spot on!
Bro i will sing praises for the faulkner soundtrack. It made some of those scenes
great
thanks👍
As long as they don't look like plastic im fine with it :)
True
The original is way better to me. Especially when he finally transforms. Without that, it feels wrong.
take my opinion with a grain of salt, but i feel like goku vs frieza would really shine with keisuke masunaga, what with his fast and furious approach with the dbz fights.
now back to the main video, i like both. when the ssj transformation is in play, i feel like goku's rage is more expressed in the original one, but you cannot deny that the effects on the remake is superb, from the background in piccolo being shot, to the effects when krillin blew up to the seeping yellow aura when the transformation takes place. i also like how the death beam was shown as if it was almost instantaneous and sudden. all in all, i prefer the remake due to the more superb effects, but you can say what you want. i have no right to judge you, and you have no right to judge me.
4:33 🔥🔥🔥🔥 DBZ art direction
as much as i love yuya and i love that guy! i just cant stop fangirling over masaki satos style.
This isn't really Takahashi's art though, Yamamuro corrected him.
DAMMIT! I can't unsee Gohan's feet under Piccolo now LOL
Both but for me personally the older one cuz the right we saw that art more after training so ssj was trained to only look like that but also in strength
nice
The falconer soundtrack is awesome, I don’t get why people hate it
The reason he did match it too the manga is because the anime and manga are different timelines hence why both goku's are different ages and why the anime and manga have slight and sometimes drastic changes like different dialog, transformation, and how interactions so he was doing a remake of the anime's scene not the manga's version of the scene.
No, English dubbing just decided to change dialogue. They aren't different timelines
Original will always be the best.
Please would you do a review on dragon ball super episode 16 interms of art which was supervised by shuichi iseki
You should have also compared it with the remade Ultimate Tenkaichi cutscene
Why is there a video clip of Kim Jon Un at the beginning of the video? lol
Holy crap man, you should be hired for "Quality Control" by Toei.... Lord knows they need it... 🙄
Nah if I made a mistake then I would get harassed by fans on twitter like the AOT staff lol
@@forgottenrelics1197 Oh yeah man, that's a good point lol.
No because piccolo didn't die he got that wrong
I fucking love Takahashi but I love the original more because of the hair that’s what I see super Sayain one as when The mutation is used for the first time not as the super spiky hair like we see in Super Saiyan Sayain 2 or a little bit of perfected Super Saiyan
Didn't the video game Ultimate Tenkaichi(i think) also remake the scene? I guess, you didn't mention it cus it was a shot by shot remake of the Anime version?
Remake>original
Falconer's work is amazing. the people shitting on it are just purist gatekeepers.
we need remake of kami fuion with piccolo
WRONG! The MOST iconic transformation was Yamcha dying in the Sayain Saga😂
Both are not good for me i like the later Z Artstyle or the end of Dragonball classic artstyle more.
I think I'm the only one who prefers the remake. Oh well.
Maybe the background is purple or pink depending on time of day :)
That would make sense although it switches back to pink within the same scene before going back to purple, kinda odd🤔
Idk why people hate on the Bruce faulconer soundtrack in my opinion it fit perfectly with the tone of dbz.
Plus, they were accompanied by silly music anyway.
you should have put the super saiyajin page on the left.
Well, for me nothing beats the original art style of dbz. Exaggerated face and movement, thick hair, muscular build, bright contrast,90's style.
