    I don’t mind paying taxes, without taxes we wouldn’t have a damn country we just need to be a little less greedy and we can’t let corporations lead in every damn thing

      We need corporations to pay their fair share of taxes. The more you earn, the more you pay. That´s how they did it in the 50s when there was an actual middle class.

    I remember my big sister (born in 1950) having 5 very difficult miscarriages after already have one child. Her doctor explained to her and her husband that if she got pregnant again that it would life threatening. He suggested that she get her tubes tied. Her husband needed to sign the consent form for the surgery. He refused because being sterile would make her less of a woman.
    She needed either her husband’s permission or her father’s (if she was unmarried) permission to get her tubes tied. She filed for divorce the following day and moved back into our father’s house. As soon as divorce was final, our father signed the consent.
    This happened in the 1970’s! That is not that long ago. We cannot go back!

      Thank you for sharing your sister's story and what it was like for women prior to Roe vs. Wade. Too many men and some women, associate the womb as an attachment to the male ego, women are not chattel of men and we do not want to become chattel to men without a voice to dissent.

      Lot of this repression of women; examples like this are cropping up. I guess a lot of these restrictions went by the wayside in my youth ahead of my awareness at the time. But Roe v Wade was in everyone's radar and it is a disgrace that donold reversed it.

    I am Spartacus!...Younger Boomer, here. My grandparents on both sides of my family, escaped Fascism and Nazism , in Eastern Europe, they left before the rise of Hitler, just barely. That makes me only the 3rd generation of immigrants. Both grandparents escaped from Russia and immigrated to Canada, then eventually they immigrated to the USA. Other relatives weren't so lucky and perished at the hands of the Nazis. I guess that is why I have always had, a hair-trigger, anxiety about the return of Nazism. I smelled it, felt it in my bones, the day the Orange Hitler, was in our midst. The day Trump rode down his golden escalator.

    I'm your mom's age. I was never socially conservative, but I have always been fiscally conservative and I have voted Republican. Everything she said resonated with me from the McCarthy Era Black Listing, to the fear of enemy attacks. I experienced the fear of Russian attacking. I lived in Texas till I was a teen. My school's playground was adjacent to Carswell Air Force Base " it was primarily known as a major Strategic Air Command (SAC) base, focusing on training and supporting heavy bomber aircraft like the B-36 Peacemaker and B-52 Stratofortress, "
    Every day we heard the bombers taking off and landing with their explosive ear splitting sonic booms. I, as a 3rd - 4th grader, , did not know they were't being attacked by the Russians. I knew if they were, we would be incinerated. Every day. . . every day. . . too horrible for a child to think about.
    Then there was the horrible injustice. We were poor. But the black man who worked for my dad on occasion was destitute and he and his wife lived in what looked to me like a tool shed. Blacks, and my Latino school mates, could not access a public pool or beach in those sweltering summer days. I saw the signs posted, and the two water fountains. Watch Green Book if you want to take a trip back to "When America was Great".
    Not even married women could get birth control information, sex ed was tragically wanting, abortions were illegal, the black vote was suppressed, districts and cities were "red-lined", anti-miscegenation laws were in effect, and being gay was listed as a mental disorder and a crime. None of it was 'right'! The political right made overtures to the religious right. Read Republican Gomorrah by Max Blumenthal to get some idea of the 'long game' the religious right has been playing. Together they have wreaked havoc on this country and our constitution, by way politicians, school boards, home schooling, politically churches, and a far right Supreme Court. One example is the Catholic Church: "June 5, 2019 - The US Catholic Church spent more than $10 million on lobbyists over seven years to delay statute of limitations reforms from going into effect in eight states." [The Hill] This was to avoid responsibility for the abuse and rape of children. An unthinkable "thumb on the scale" to interfere with justice.
    Thinking about 'what was' enrages me, and seeing it loom before me again has almost sucked my soul dry. I thought we were better as a nation. Some of us are. I voted early for Harris. But even if she wins there will be unrest, as the fabric of our nation has been rent. My hope is that we can recover and become a better nation.

    I'm a Brit watching your elections with a sense of dread for your country. Your mother is sharp and astute. I'm a socialist living in a country that is largely right leaning. For many years we have been governed by a mildly right wing Conservative Party, but those days are over and the lunatic right wing fringe has gained ground by aping Donald Trump. They have done so by demonising immigrants to the UK in exactly the way that Trump is in the US. Luckily for us the UK population voted overwhelming ly to get rid of the Conservative government whose immediate response has been to lurch even further to the right. I hope that those people that watch your TH-cam videos will hear the simple common sense that your wonderful mother speaks and see Trump for what he truly is.

    I'm a little younger than your mom. I was never conservative, but have lived on the left all my life. At the age of about 15 I decided I was a socialist (democratic). After working as a legal services lawyer, I went back for my PhD in sociology, and taught political sociology, gender studies, the sociology of poverty, and theory for 25 years.
    I agree 100% with your mom. It's what I try to tell my friends on the left--at least there's a chance that a Harris administration will listen, but no chance at all with Trump. A revolution, they say. Do you know who gets hurt in revolutions? It's never the power brokers except perhaps for one figurehead. It's always the weakest.
    We need to get this right. I thought, at the beginning of the pandemic, that there was a chance for the emergence of social democracy. But Trump and his coterie used it as a weapon against us. People of color and the poor will be the sacrificial lambs.
    I sit in my comfortable small house in my mostly Euro-American blue neighborhood in my blue college town in a state that used to be purple but now is turning bright red. But how long will this little oasis stay safe? I'm a coward by nature, but a part of me wonders what will force me to risk all to save the country--the world--and what form that risk would take. Or will I continue to be a coward and just observe.

    I disagree that the Republicans ever were fiscally responsible or for small government. I am about the same age as the mother. And was conservative in the seventies and for a few years after Reagan. The great depression was caused by Republicans. Who in the 1920s repealed fiscal regulations. Which allowed people to speculate with money they didn't have. The housing bubble of 2008 was similar. Giving loans to people that couldn't afford them. And Republicans are doing the same things today. Trying to repeal any rules that would the let rich usually white men. To make all the wealth they want. With the 99% of us paying for it. Even at the expense of billions of life. And possibly the extinction of the human race.

      Thanks for your comment. I personally agree that failing to regulate and failing to commensurately tax big business and the very wealthy is NOT fiscally responsible. There is more than one way to waste money. Indulging greed and failing to protect the public is not a very common sense or even practical way to live.

    I’m on the line of Boomers/Gen X. I lived in Europe with grandparents who fought the fascist Nazis and worked with the US Navy as the RESISTANCE to smuggle Jews, Artists, Scientists, Academics, etc out of the country in WWII. They were Fishermen. I learned so much from them about fascism true simple conservative survival. I hand washed cloth diapers hanging them out on a line, daily and walked to do our shopping everyday, locally.
    My EU grandparents had so much respect for America for saving them from Nazi Fascism. They allowed their only daughter to marry a Naval soldier who they welcomed in their home for 6 years.

    The comparison of Trump with McCarthy is far more useful and powerful then the usual comparison with Hitler. The tendency of the right to search for a heroic stong man as a saviour is also a great thing to highlight.

    Elections are not about ideology or religious values or about political ideology or about character. They are about how we divide the pie. People will vote for Trump because they believe that he will divide the pie in a way that favors them.

    • @Starfish2145
      @Starfish2145 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That used to be the case, but the Donald Trump has given people permission to express their religious fanaticism, racism and hatred openly. HUGE difference

    • @michaeldunigan1067

      @Starfish2145 These are delusions. Elections are about how we divide the pie. That's all.

    • @michaeldunigan1067
      @michaeldunigan1067 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ursamagickmt672 That was the idea of Reaganomics. By cutting taxes you can make the pie bigger. The Laffer curve. But because of the first law of economics, limited supply for unlimited demand, there is a limit to how big the pie can get. The limit was passed but they still continued to cut taxes. Thus the expanding national debt. At some point the economy will seize up. It will be disasterous.
