My Mom Reacts to Kamala's Loss - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 05
มุมมอง 15Kหลายเดือนก่อน
So... the bad thing happened... Donald Trump won and Kamala Harris lost the Presidential election. How did this happen? WHY did this happen? Will and Mom examine those questions and look to history for some possible explanations; most notably the failed Presidential Campaign of Hubert Humphrey. And then they explore how we process the fact that millions of our fellow Americans voted for an obvi...
My Boomer Mom Explains Why Trump MUST Lose - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 04
มุมมอง 18Kหลายเดือนก่อน
My formerly conservative boomer mom explains why Donald Trump MUST lose this election - and Kamala Harris MUST win. Trump is using the same fear tactics that were used by people like Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s - warning about "the enemy from within" in order to divide Americans and gain power. But who is the REAL "enemy from within"? Mom implores conservatives to put their country before part...
What the 1950s Were Really Like - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 03
มุมมอง 125Kหลายเดือนก่อน
My mom recalls her memories of the 1950s - a complicated era filled with contradictions. It was a time of immense American prosperity in the wake of worldwide devastation following World War 2. It was a time when the government invested in the American people... well SOME of the people. Because the 1950s was also a time with a regimented social and economic hierarchy - particularly when it came...
How Fear & Bigotry Is Used To Benefit the Privileged Class - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 02
มุมมอง 18K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Will and Mom discuss how the far-right stoked the fear of a communist takeover of America in the 1950s and 1960s to support their largely unpopular agenda of economic and imperialist policies designed to benefit the ultra-rich and large corporations. Stoking fear of "the enemy from within" to benefit the wealthy... hmmm, that sounds familiar for some reason... Will and Mom also discuss how both...
Why My Mom Left the Right - Talking Politics With Mom - Episode 01
มุมมอง 180K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
In the debut episode of Talking Politics With Mom - Some More News Director, Will Gordh (a progressive millennial) talks to his mom (a formerly conservative boomer) about what drew her to right-wing ideology when she was younger, and why she ultimately decided to abandon that philosophy - which includes a level of personal and intellectual commitment that is truly rare. Spoiler Alert: She took ...
It'd be interesting to learn what the ratio is of families that have these kind of conversations to those that never do.
Thank you for sharing this story at a time when many of us have lost our families over political differences.
Tom Hanks as the general and Meryl Streep playing Mom?
Beautiful story. Thank you both and happy holidays!
bravo/ for putting out this podcast/ 🙏
Only thing good about the 50’s were the cars and furniture.
Apparently we're going back! Didn't finish yet but so far didn't hear about the discrimiation against gay people that was in the 50s they want to go back too as well!
Thank you for an honest look at the forces that shaped you and how you evolved.
Fabulous pod cast. Thank you Adrienne for your story. It is better to hear words of commonality and humanity, rather than Trumpling down with insanity.
tragic election outcome/ condolences/
I appreciate you both! These conversations are so needed right now. Thank you.
I also grew up in a very conservative home. I appreciate your story and that you are sharing it. Thank you!!!
I was 14 and Canadian in 1967. That was had zero impact on my life in terms of knowing much about the war in Viet Nam or any personal connection. One year later my father was elected to server in our federal parliament and we moved across the country to our nation's capital. That's when I learned so much beyond the classrooms of my first year in highschool. Your story brought back so many memories of that time and, conflicting emotions, because I was not mature enough at that time to be able to separate the warriors from the was. Thank you for re-connecting me with one of the reasons listen to the voice of kindness first.
What a beautiful story. This could be a movie. How crazy that’s he’s atill alive and how amazing that he got to update his comrades ❤️
I was in 10th grade in 1967 - I remember all too well the protests on college campuses and how horribly our vets were treated when they came home. Your story is something I will never forget and it brought me to tears. Thank you so much for touching me so deeply this quiet Sunday morning. This remembrance of how powerful kindness is will sustain me through the next four years. Thank you!
Thank you for a wonderful story! ❤ Love to listen to you both! Happy holidays & New Year!🎉 From a viewer in Norway. ❄️❄️
I think one of the hidden issues in politics is whether the politics we have is just what happens to be fashionable and a status marker in the moment, or whether politics is something that is the result of having philosophical principles, values and convictions that a person has thought out and arrived at for themselves. Your mother definitely falls into the latter camp, but I think that a lot of people only belong to whatever camp seems to be successful and popular, or popular with the intellectual and cultural elites. What would be advantageous for advancing themselves in their careers and climbing the success ladder.
Great video.
Firstly, may you both have a lovely holiday season, filled with hope, peace, and love. Secondly, I'd pay good money to have your mamma run for elected office. I am on the other side of the pond and recognize the chutzpah your mom has that is needed to shake some sense into the knuckleheads in Washington...
Thank you for sharing this moving story. The power of saying yes! Of remembering to treat everyone as worthy of love and kindness. This is an important part of what we need to do to avert fascism and to heal the divisions in our nation and world.
Just amazing! My brother was a seargant in the Army in Viet Nam, he made it back, but his platoon did not, they were attacked and their leader at the time didn't do the right thing, and they were all lost...My brother was in Saigon getting his teeth worked on and was spared.
Hello! Thank you for this wonderful story. This reminds me to really think more critically when I am reacting angrily to some story or events told by some podcaster or whoever in the news media. I wonder whether my emotional reaction is what they seek. How much do they as well as any other group might benefit from my anger? If it is a message that makes me hate, I know I need to stay away. I do believe that kindness matters and that acts of kindness matter. I wish you both a wonderful holiday season and happy new year!
I was so happy to see a new video uploaded today! I loved the Christmas story and the messages of kindness, respect, and cooperation it portrayed. As a preteen, I exchanged letters with my cousin who was a medic in Vietnam. He survived the war. Looking forward to the next video to learn from Adrienne's wisdom and experiences. Best wishes for a relaxing holiday season and happy new year! 💙💙
I could listen to your mom’s stories forever!!!! Just love your show!
I don’t want to watch these all at one time. I’m titrating myself. Is that the right way to say it? I’m going to be so sad when I come to the end. I’ll probably start from the beginning again. I appreciate that you are numbering Each one.
I love the videos so much. I watched some twice. I found the channel after the first video was uploaded, but if I had become aware weeks later I would have binged them in one day! I'm not good at delaying gratification. 😉
What an absolutely amazing story. What a difference a little bit of kindness makes. The photos were so telling, the smiles on their faces. You are so right, separate the politics from the person. Wise mom, always listen to your mom.
I’m 80. I won’t tell you the worst of my life during the 50s. Not enough money, welfare support, a broken up family, too much alcohol, too many children in a working class neighborhood in a smallish town in California. Your movies remind me of Dick and Jane, which, of course, were a fantasy to me. A story. A storybook. Your movies look more like that. Of course, maybe you were lucky to have not met some of the priests in those Catholic schools. Sorry to be a downer. I know that you know about this other reality through your exploration of the world when you got older. However, you have been shaped by the security of that time. I’m so glad that you weren’t lost to that story.
I absolutely love this story! Thank you for sharing. It's so inspirational. Happy holidays to both of you, and yours.
I remember as c a kid making Christmas cards in class that were picked up by wives of POWs.
Thank you for sharing that memory
I love these conversations so much. Thank you for sharing this incredible story!
Happy Christmas!
Please, post every week or two weeks. You have something we all need. Especially these days. If you want 100K subscribers, please, ask for that. Thank you.
I grew up during Nam; my neighbor 2 homes away was one of the first POWs off the plane when they landed back in the U.S. I have classmates with fathers killed in action, MIA and also POW's. It was crazy.
Merry Christmas 🎁🎄 keep the fabulous discussions and stories coming❤
Delighted to see a post. Always happy to hear you! Thank you. I'm born 63 but I think I'm the end of the Boomers?
Tell it, Mom. I love you and will listen to you all day.
What an amazing & touching story 🫶🏼☀️. I absolutely love your channel.. not only do I learn things from every video, they also give me hope. Just wanted to tell you that & wish you both a peaceful & joyful holiday season 🎄✨🫶🏼
Beautiful and inspiring story. If this were made into a film, I'd watch it every year. Thank you for sharing!
What a wonderful idea.
At least Trump will finally stop wars in Ukraine and middle east
I would like to hear Mom’s perspective of the recent Luigi Mangione situation.
Another great show!
I’m in love with this show!!!! Thank you so much for sharing!
I love, love, love your channel. I have to disagree with many of your points. 1. We have NEVER been here before. In 1968 we had a legitimate Supreme Court. No justices were openly taking bribes like we have today. In 1968 the lower courts were not filled with right wing sycophants like Aileen Cannon. So today, relief from the courts is unlikely. And most importantly we have never had a fascist president granted IMPERIAL POWERS by his corrupt supreme court. With all his faults, Nixon didn't hold a candle to the incompetence and fascism of MAGA Man. We've never had a Republican party that supported a coup based on a pack of repeated lies. And we have never had unelected billionaires and a President-elect dictating to Congress. Unlike 1968 today, all the constitutional guardrails have been neutralized. 2. I think the blame game is misplaced. In retrospect, the election was lost the day Biden decided to run. I wasn't hearing criticism of Harris during the campaign. All I heard was praise and agreement for her tactics, fund raising, and messaging. No one is or ever will be FDR, but I doubt he could have won this election. When 50%+ the American electorate will vote for someone who tried to overturn our government, no arguments will sway them. Democrats themselves have rejected FDRs policies. Only one major Progressive consistently espouses FDR policies with the same ferocity as FDR... Bernie Sanders. The "Squad" does too to a degree . The media portrays him and them as extreme left wing radicals. And , Democratic leadership has consistently undercut Sanders, the Squad, and strong Progressivism. Therefore FDR populism and labor support is no longer an arrow in Democratic Party quiver, as in 1968. Labor was long abandoned by the corporate Democrats like Clintons, Biden, Obama, Pelosi, etc. Consequently, Dems have lost labor to MAGA. 3. Propaganda and Media Intimidation. The role of Fox News, talk radio, ONN, NewsMax, right wing podcasters, etc as the Propaganda Department of the Republican Party cannot be underestimated. We did not have this in 1968. As much as anything this election was a victory for false propaganda. Added to that the networks and most major cable news like CNN have been intimidated into passive journalism that normalizes MAGA lies as just another opinion. Finally, the cowardice of the Washington Post and LA Times was fully revealed when they wouldn't endorse Harris against the leader of a coup attempted against the USA. Therefore, Democratic Party messaging is muted at best and more commonly twisted/mocked at worst. Getting a liberal message through those obstacles is nearly impossible. I don't see a way out of this with anything resembling a healthy democracy. At 70 years old I have resigned myself to the fact that I will never live to see American Democracy resembling anything close to what he used to be.
You were assigned to the wrong building. I'm Black, and welfare has virtually destroyed my people's will to work. We're hooked on someone else giving us things. We need to be incentivized to do things for ourselves.
Would love if you’d do some videos with your mom where you discuss specifically the politics and culture of other decades, ie. her perception of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s etc… or topics such as civil rights, the sexual revolution of the 70’s. She’s a gem!
Thanks!
So much truth here. I got a fantastic education in traditional history and thought I knew it all. Then I read The Feminine Mystique and realized there was an enormous amount of 20thc social history regarding women that had simply disappeared. No one "repressed" it. It just wasn't considered interesting or important--wars and kings and philosophical trends were all there was supposed to be to history. It's STILL considered less interesting. The only Ken Burns film that's impossible to find streaming somewhere is the one on Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Baseball, apparently, is more important. It's still a patriarchal world in which you have to fight for visibility, to know your own history.
The superior postwar Sputnik education system was absolutely built on the backs of talented women, who could not get other kinds of jobs. I saw a panel of businessmen in the 90s discussing the steep decline in public ed (yes, it was awful then, just not as awful), and one said, "the primary [sic] reason was the fact that women could now get other employment and left teaching in droves." My experiences in the school system over decades as a student and teacher totally bear this out.
What an amazing story!!! It’s mind blowing that the SAME tactic is STILL going on today! Thank you for sharing your story!
