    When I was working in an office the ergonomic chairs caused me so much back pain. I absolutely could not stand it when I was pregnant, I would drag the cheap, flat/hard chairs from the break room to my desk.

      Yes Tasha! I am so glad to hear that you went to greater lengths to find comfort at work-dragging an alternative chair to your desk as opposed to the one that was causing you pain. 😊 I've heard from many students who are so surprised that the chair they thought was supposed to be the most comfortable was what was actually causing their ongoing pain. Keep up the great work! 🌟

    I kinda understand why you like benches and coaches 😜😜... Even the chairs you showed are armless... That's very thoughtful :P

    Thank you for this video! I was a student of the Alexander Technique as a violinist, and found the foundation principles very useful. As I transitioned into teaching online, I found my body starting to hurt while seated at the computer. After investing in many expensive chairs, I finally settled on a $40 IKEA wood chair with a lightly cushioned seat. What I discovered was many of the office chairs are designed around the average male body which means a 5'2" female like me had swining feet, pressure behind the knees, and a lumbar support in the middle of my back.
    Now, I have a whole new attutide. My printer is in another room so I have to get up to retrieve things. I stand for some lessons and sit for others, and I now have a foot rest cushion so my feet don't hang. I'm so happy to meet someone else who sees ergonomic chairs, and roller chairs, as poor supports for our bodies.

      Absolutely! 🙏🏻 It's great to hear about your positive experience with the Alexander Technique and how it's helped you navigate the challenges of teaching online. Your insight about ergonomic chairs and the importance of considering different body types is spot on. Many people overlook these factors and end up uncomfortable in standardized chairs designed for a limited range of body shapes. It's wonderful that you've found a solution that works for you-a simple, affordable chair along with mindful practices like standing during some lessons and using a footrest cushion. Your proactive approach to listening to your body and making adjustments is commendable. 😊 Keep up the good work, and continue prioritizing your comfort and well-being! ✨

    I have lower back issues and purchased a refurbished Steelcase Leap chair. If I sit up straight without slouching, and don't stay seated for longer than I would have in my older chair, I find it helps immensely with my posture and reduces pain with the adjustable lumbar support. It has to be used correctly, or course, and I agree with most the objections you stated. I also have a standing chair to help with my posture. Hard to slouch in those.

      It sounds like you've taken a proactive approach to address your lower back issues, and it's great to hear that the Steelcase Leap chair is making a positive difference for you! 👍 Proper posture and lumbar support can indeed play a significant role in reducing discomfort and promoting spinal health. And kudos for throwing a standing chair into the mix-variety is the key to great ergonomics! If you ever have more tips or insights to share, feel free to drop them here! 😊 Cheers to good posture + happy sitting! 🪑✨

    How do ergonomic chairs "convince" us that they're comfortable? I am yet to find one that is comfortable...

    • @MorganRysdonCenterStudio
      @MorganRysdonCenterStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I’m in your camp too! 😂 While many people praise the comfort of ergonomic chairs due to their unique curves and angles, I've personally found them less comfortable. Initially, the bounciness of the seat or the mesh back may give a sense of relaxation to most, but I've noticed that over time these ergonomic chairs can lead to more strain on the back without us even realizing it. I believe these chairs can be deceiving, as they often ‘convince' people of their comfort based on initial impressions. In my experience, chairs with solid, firm seats and backs tend to provide better long-term support. What type of chairs do you prefer? I'd love for you to share! ☺✨

    Jokes apart, any chair you lean your back towards, is gonna put your in a awkward posture. At best you can have some support for your lower back, That too you should be sitting absolutely close to the support. Back support of upper back is a big no-no... that's the reason for all the slouching

    I like rollers on my chair because it is easier to move around and get closer to the desk, etc. I agree that one needs to move and get up more, so I like chairs that are comfortable for a while but then encourage me to get up and move. Great video.

    • @MorganRysdonCenterStudio
      @MorganRysdonCenterStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I know many people who like the rollers on their chairs (and I've even found myself enjoying a roll around here or there 🤪), however-in general-I think it tends to limit folks' movement when they're at a 9-5 job where they're sedentary most of their work day. It sounds like you get up frequently enough that you don't have to worry about not getting enough movement though! So keep it up-I'm sure your body appreciates it. 😊

    Casters cause my torso to hold me in place, I think because the chair feels like it's going to move if I don't stabilize it.

    I do like an ergonomic chair, but I wouldn't pay the $$$ for one. I'll keep the desk chair that I have. It does make me get up and walk around because it isn't all that comfortable for a long time.

      Yes, we all have our preferences Faye and I'm glad to hear that you are making notes and prioritizing getting up and moving around. I'm confident your body always appreciates more walking around throughout the day-keep it up! ✨

    When you’re in a workspace, you are limited in your choices. For instance, I have a built-in desk that it’s too high and I have a chair that is cheap and too short and very uncomfortable and I also have to work nine hours a day at my desk. I have a lot of problems, including my back, my wrist, my arms, my neck, so I need a comfortable adjustable chair, a.k.a. an ergonomic chair. You quite literally lost me when you said the name ergonomic makes you think it’s comfortable. What?? It’s either comfortable or it’s not. You’re only solution is to grab a chair from around the house and start there. Not a great solution when you’re at the office. Also, what if that chair that you grabbed from around the house isn’t high enough and you’re sitting super low at your desk. What is your solution? My chair at work has casters and I’m on carpet. It doesn’t move. Unless I push it. I stand on it all the time to water the plants above the cabinets. Ergonomic chairs, place you at the right height at your desk at work and support your lumbar as well as offer cushion for 9 hours. If you can counter that with some equivalent solutions, that would be helpful, but saying that a chair only makes someone feel comfortable because of the name of the chair and grab a chair from around the house and start there is not helpful. Also, you’re teaching a method to students. But if it’s sound it could be applied to any age. Grandmothers don’t just change their own lightbulbs, they also work in office settings. 😑

    I take it you don't think a stability ball wouldn't be a good option for a chair then? I'm at a loss as to what is making me unbearably comfortable in the office 🫤

    • @MorganRysdonCenterStudio
      @MorganRysdonCenterStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! Yeah, you're right, I'm not a big fan of stability balls for sitting all day. I think they could be good for quick spurts throughout the day (for example, a brief meeting that lasts 10-15 minutes), but, in general, I think it's better to have a desk chair that provides more support for your sit bones. All this being said, if you're uncomfortable at the office all day it is probably something you're doing WHILE you're sitting or HOW you're sitting in your chair. If you're at a loss of what that is, I might suggest setting up a video camera for an hour or so (on a tripod) to record what you look like while you're working/sitting. When you review the video try to pay attention to where you are sitting on your chair, where your legs are, shoulders, etc.-the answer might become very apparent when you watch your video. Good luck! 👍🏻 ✨ Let me know how it goes! 😊

      @@MorganRysdonCenterStudio Sorry, my message clearly should have said *uncomfortable
      Thank you, good suggestion re: the video. I did sit with a mirror the other day as purchased a sort of 'floating' arm support for my desk. I think it was a case of my arm rests are too far away fromy body and too low to be supporting my arms in any way. I am fairly petite. And so my arms end up like wings out to the side all day mousing. Exhausting! Thank you for the reply 🙏🏼
