- I give my 1998 Toyota Starlet a service, with parts provided by Autodoc.co.uk - who also sponsored this episode.

I also deal with the noisy rear wheel bearings, replacing both of them. This results in a Starlet that is much more pleasant to drive!
Parts replaced: Oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, both rear wheel bearings.
Clean out the garage. Yes that includes the floor!!! Yes we would watch you do it!
Ha ha ha - growing up on a council estate in the 70's and 80's most cars were serviced in the street outside the owners home so most gutters were full of a mix of old and new oil that had been spilled !
Yes indeed - and I remember a lot of abandoned cars parked by the garages that we kids would get into and pretend to be starsky and hutch, or knightrider :) Broken glass and that smell of dirty grease and oil!
You could cut the bottom of the first oil bottle off and then you have a freebie funnel :)
I don't know if you're very knowledgeable on Toyota engines but the 4E-FE is one of Toyota's most durable engines. I have that same engine in my Geo Prizm(which is basically a rebadged Toyota Corolla) and those motors are world renowned for their longevity and durability. That's why I bought my car. Those engines can go 300,000 miles easy if properly maintained. They do have one weakness, which was a design flaw during engineering that most people are not aware of. They designed the oil ring holes that lubricate the cylinder walls and protect the oil rings too small. So if you neglect your oil changes those holes can become plugged up and the engine will start burning oil. I know of this issue, so i always use synthetic oil to prevent that issue from ever starting in the first place. Love the video.

Your comment about how quiet the Starlet's engine is reminded me of a time when I owned a B310 Sunny Fastback Estate, with NIssan's A15 engine. After an unfortunate incident which left it needing a new head gasket, it was taken to our village garage for repair. Upon completion, I stood talking to the garage's owner for a full five minutes before he said "just listen to that, it's like a little Rolls-Royce". I had no idea the engine was running over the noise of even a quiet little village garage.
In subsequent weeks, upon entering car parks with narrow access it was sometimes necessary to sound the horn because people genuinely couldn't hear the car approaching :)
Well done on the service Ian.......you know what; it's much more enjoyable watching someone else struggling to do the work than do it yourself (grin). NOW I know you're not a fan of banger racing, but it was my great pleasure to be taken to Stoke on Saturday to the big classic banger meeting. Please remember nearly all these cars would have just been crushed. I'm extremely grateful for my friends to have taken me, got the chance to have a great evening, AND even better, managed to capture the atmosphere of the night. I don't ask anyone to watch my videos, but really think you will enjoy this. Seeing a few scrap cars have a good send off. I've only shown the cars, not the racing......plenty of others do that.

Cheers Ian. I'm not a banger racing fan. Would never do it 'properly'. However I have to say, despite their reputation, they are the nicest bunch of people you would wish to meet. It's why I go, although only once a year now.
Even though your not a fan, have a look anyway, simply because 'you like cars'. I hate destruction, yet, somehow, to see scrap cars go out in 'a blaze of glory' is so much more satisfying than just seeing them in the crusher (or ever rusting into the ground on someone's driveway)I only show the cars, and the people in my video.....no racing.
I also have an EP-91 STarlet. Have run it as a daily driver for 9 years and 70,000 reliable miles.
theres something strangely satisfying about servicing your own vehicles. and i have to admit to liking the smell of the tank for disposing old oil in at the local tip . ive been told i have issues . . . . . .
Well done mate, I enjoyed the basic service almost as much as the starlet, it is much less noisey

For future oil changes, it is always a good idea to fill your new oil filter with fresh oil before installing it. This prevents oil starvation in the top end of the motor. If the filter sits sideways you can fill the filter half way and prevent spillage during installation.
Hope this tip helps you and anyone else doing oil changes on their vehicles.
I've never gone in for that, though I do sometimes disconnect an ignition lead so I can build oil pressure on the starter.
The engine should feel a bit more responsive following the service. The mixture is perfect judging by the state of the old spark plugs. The new rear wheel bearings will have made the biggest difference.
Don't beat yourself up over the oil slick. I only have to check the dipstick and it looks like the Amoco Cadiz has been up the drive.
If you think that fuel filter's a faff, the fuel filter on the Corolla E11 (same engine as this Starlet, same year etc) requires the removal of the air filter gubbins and some parts of the gearbox. 20,000 miles or every 2 years that job is! The 4EFE is a great engine though.
Some parts of the gearbox? So you have to dismantle the gearbox to replace that filter?
The Starlet looks easy to work on.
There are new fangled things called funnels that work quite well for oil filling.

Another excellent video there. It is the law in England (so probably Wales too) that oil must be spilt during an oil change, if not under the vehicle, then later whilst decanting it back into a container.

My friend has a 1993 Starlet for sale. Lovely little machine. Seem to be very rare now.
Excellent, plugs look prefect. Oil draining tip when using old oil cans. Instead of cutting a square out, cut top and bottom horizontally, then cut a vertical line between those lines in the middle creating an H on it's side. Fold the flaps out, warming at the creases to get a sharp crease and get a "set" when they cool. You probably see where this is going. You get a much larger catchment for those annoying dribbles along the sump edges.
That's advanced level catch can cheapskatery! I love it.
You made the effort to wear the appropriate clothing, had the cardboard on the floor and then spill oil on the concrete - sods law. Energy and fun - in a Starlet!
The Toyota looks and sounds a nice tidy little car now, for a 20 year old model, with the bit of work you've done, you'll have several more years of motoring from a car alot of people would have scrapped.
Hubnut and anyone else with a Starlet- no need to get a garage to press the wheel bearings in, just pull out the bearings by hand, use a seal pick to remove the seal, and as for the races there are two strategically placed slots in the hub, on each side, hold the hub/drum in a vice and using a hammer and drift carefully tap out the races a few taps at a time each side "groove/slot". Use a suitably sized socket to tap the new races back in. Same with seal, use a slightly bigger socket to drift the seal back in. I had to do the wheel bearings on my STarlet, seems a weak point on these otherwise 99% reliable cars.
Starlet is so simple to work on and it is so quiet. At least you have one dependable car there no matter where you want to go motorways etc are no problem, just hop in and away you go. Makes life easier when you've a good spare car.
I'll have you know that Elly the 2CV has been very dependable after the battery farce!
HubNut didn't mean to insult the 2cv but for me it's real luxury having a car as dependable as the starlet while fetteling the others. Don't think I've ever had more than one good runner at the same time...

@@martymartin2894 if you have the space, fix it up and keep it. All would depend on whether you have the skills to do it up yourself or have to pay someone else. The satisfaction for me is doing it myself.

Hi Ian, I wish all cars was that easy to service everybody doing their own,retro watch you got there F91W, I own one of these watches,it runs quieter now,cool video.
Free funnel tip, chop a 1 litre oil container in half (trying not to cut fingers off) and like magic you have a perfect funnel that also sits nicely in the oil filler. You don’t have much luck with brakes mr HB, great video though. I hate press in wheel bearings they are cheap but with no press or other means to ‘press’ out your stuck.
I once dropped a washer through the spark plug hole and did not notice until i started the engine a lot of noise ensued and a quick switch off. I removed the cylinder head but by sheer luck the washer had not gone on its side so had not punched through the piston but there where lots of circular dents on the piston top.I put the cylinder head back on and unbelievably everything worked fine.
I use a washing up bowl for oil drains. It was going to be thrown away so I made use of it. Big capacity and low height triple win 😀
I find they're tricky to get the oil back out of though...

We would have been disappointed if you didn't make a mess Ian, just another reason why the older cars are the best the fact any one can do jobs like this with out needing some computer just to open the bonnet.
quite a small spillage, ive just changed hydraulic oil on a pumpstation, all 110litres out and new in, a shame there only was room for 105 litres in the barrel i drained into..... nicely serviced Starlet...
Rotate the oil bottle 90 dog when pouring, you get closer to the hole then
It's done that way so the air flows freely into the bottle leaving the oil to flow out rather glug out.
Best to fill oil filters before fitting. Easy to do on upside down ones. Most people would say that running an engine without oil pressure, whilst the oil filter fills, as a bad thing.
True, but it is not for very long as modern engines build oil pressure very quickly. If concerned, you can always disconnect the coil and spin the engine up to pressure before it fires up.
She looks in remarkable order for a 20 year old, certainly better than more exotic stuff from the same era, the E39 BMW for instance who's wings and wheelarches always seem to look rather cruddy.

It has. I actually saw the Starlet immediately after it was involved in a shunt on the M5 motorway! Purely by chance. I was on my way home from the NEC. Thankfully the airbags did their thing.
@@HubNut that is one heck of a coincidence! I really liked the Starlet. Ok it cost you a bit of money at the beginning and your wife hated it, but it seemed solid and eager. Also best swap for a Lexus ever. Luxury to poverty in one leap.

Toyota uses two filters for practically every engine, and the other one is the same as what you have but with a slightly longer case. That same filter probably fits the V8 in the Lexus you had.

"Fuel filter ready to go...uh that's the wiper motor ..." Could have been interesting feeding raw fuel into the the wiper motor. Cat litter is the best stuff for soaking up engine oil. Use a better brand than the cheapy ones (the ones that stink...)
Mercmad I’ve used cheaply cheap Tesco kitty litter to great success when I’ve made a pigs ear of draining oil. Never seen the need for proper fancy stuff
it helps if the cat isn't in the kitty litter too. For some reason they are a bit averse to engine oil.

Full synthetic oil in an older car can be problematic- I used it in a Subaru Justy, and it leaked like a sieve, from every gasket. Yes, the gaskets probably needed replacement, but the synthetic oil dissolved the old oil that had built up around the gaskets, and came right out!

Great video, bought myself one of these too and it needs few things doing. Regarding rear wheel bearings, is there a torq setting for a hub nut or you have to tighten it by feeling it so it’s not to tight to the point where wheel stops spinning?
It doesn't apply to the Starlet, but some modern engines, the Ford/Mazda 5 cyl diesel for example, have oil pumps that won't prime themselves. If you let the oil drain for more than about 10 minutes, you restart the engine with zero oil pressure that will not improve. Disaster ensues. Another reason to like old cars :).
These cars are so easy to service. Some years ago i did a service on my BMW E91 320d. The air filter housing had been a part of the rocker cover and the allen bolts were rounded. Bugger, i ended up fitting a whole new rocker cover after breaking it trying to remove the allen bolts. Then after the oil change the drain plug was leaking. The same moron had been cracking the sump pan over tightening the plug. A simple service that should have taken me 3 hours took 6 and i ended up paying £500 + all because some twat with air tools had wrecked everything on the previous "service".

Vampire Echidna - my front bearings needed doing last summer on my mk2 Rio. Bought 2nd hand hubs as we only have one car and therefore couldn't run off to a garage to have new ones pressed in, like Ian did. Kept my old hubs as spares to have new bearings pressed in next time as I have been told Rio's eat bearings at a decent rate, especially on the front. Though the 2nd hand ones are spot on, nearly 12 months on.
Paul Smith that not a bad idea Paul. Up until I watched this video, I didn't think about how they would get pressed in. I assumed they would simply slide on. Good to see someone else who owns a mark 2 Rio. Did you find removing the hubs on the Rio difficult?
Vampire Echidna - surprisingly easy to remove. Mine has 120k on the clock, so expected everything to be siezed - was a doddle though. Getting the replacement hubs on the driveshaft AND lining everything else up was the only faff. Paid £50 for both off fleabay. Hyundai Accent ( 2000on from memory ) front hubs are identical. Bought my CRDi for 400 quid with the knackered bearings as a stop gap last summer. I'm still stunned at how good a car it is and is now a keeper 😁.
My current CRDi 2009 Rio Is the second I've owned. They are good solid cars and surprisingly economical. Wow 400 Pound is a lot of car for your money. That's a bargain! I'm looking forward to giving the Rio it's first service in my company when the weather gets better. Thanks Paul for the advise on the wheel bearings and hub, much appreciated . :)
Vampire Echidna - we must be due a decent stretch of good weather. Mines a 55 plate. Picked it up off a trader the day before he was going on holiday. No one believes me when they see the car - only improved further with a HuNut sticker! We had a french money pit in the form of a Grand Espace before, so the contrast in reliability and running costs are poles apart. Hope you get outside soon. All the best.👍

I ordered £300 worth of parts. They took 16 days for delivery despite apparently being in stock.
When delivered there were £90 of parts missing and Autodoc refuse to do anything about it.

Hi Ian, had a 1989 carina 2 , some years ago , best car I've had , amongst other makes . it had 90K on the clock when I sold it on to my brother who did another 30K in it , before it went to the scrapyard with serious rust problems.. Do you come across any of these cars on your travels? I think ones in good condition are pretty hard to find. Ian H.
Carina IIs have become very rare. I occasionally see the odd estate still in daily use in Wales!

Last year I bought 5L of SAE30 oil off ebay, pictured was a nice 5L jug, what arrived was 5x 1L bottles, damned annoying, but oh well, oil is oil... :)
How is the oil pressure on the 3 Wheeler? If you have multiple cars with the same oil filler cap a handy tip is to get a spare cap drill a hole and glue a funnel in, hands free filling then!
Oil pressure seems fine. New sender, slightly higher tickover speed, sorted.

If it's from Autodoc does that mean all the nuts and bolts come undone without resulting in heating them up and hitting them with a 4lb hammer like they do on their TH-cam channel?
Couldn't you have put the drum on backwards put the bearing and nut on and just yank the outer bearing out?
No seized bolts. Didn't even need a wrench for the oil filter. Must be Autodoc magic. A contribution to the local garage's tea fund seemed better than ruining things myself!

Everyone says that about every engine in my fleet. Which suggests it's just how this camera records engine sound. The engine is super-smooth.

Rookie question I know, but not all of us Hubnutters (Hubnutees? Hubnuteers?) are familiar with the "doings" part of their cars, so what's the deal between fully and semi-synthetic oil, and should we worry about which we use? Thanks!
I should probably do a video on oils. It's a baffling world! Fully synthetic is the best oil to use, because it lasts longest. It's why cars now have service intervals of over 20,000 miles. Semi-synthetic is a mixture of synthetic and mineral oil, so it's cheaper to buy, better than mineral oil, but not as good as synthetic. My thinking, especially with older cars, has always been to focus on regular changes (ie 5000-6000 miles) rather than buy the best oil.
+ Thanks for that Ian. Oil is obviously a more complex topic than I imagined (and I also presumed that synthetic wouldn't be as good as "organic" - shows how much I know!). BTW, my vote goes to Hubnuteers :-)
As far as U.S./API-rated oil, there's no definition for "partial synthetic." It could just be conventional with a drop of synthetic base oil. The most important thing is to get the right type for the engine.
Oil classifications for API and ILSAC are mostly backwards compatible, so if you get an SN or GL-5 oil, it will be fine for an engine that needs an earlier standard. Some older engines need high sulfur formulations, normally labeled as "racing oil," to preserve metal components, but the extra sulfur will poison catalysts in modern cars and won't offer any wear benefit.
High mileage oils also don't have their own classification, but they're blended with conditioners that help revive old seals. This can reduce or stop oil burning and sometimes leaking in old motors. These usually aren't "energy conserving," so you'll lose a little fuel efficiency and power.
Viscosity should match the application. People used to use high viscosity oils in worn engines, but this just strains the oil pump, and oil may not reach the entire engine. Racing may require higher viscosity than normal because of engine heat: hot viscosity is rated at 212F/100C, so if the engine is running hotter than normal, the oil can be a lot thinner. Synthetics stay stable at a wider range of temperatures, both hot and cold. Otherwise, just use what fits the specifications. Some engines designed for long oil change intervals require synthetic, and some formulations like 0W20 are only available in synthetic, but for other applications, conventional or partial synthetic should be fine.
Do not expect any service afterwards. I have received shock absorbers in a damaged box with missing parts. I sent an email with a few foto's. The reaction was that they want moro foto's. And more foto's. After 12 foto's of a damaged box they want a video of the missing parts.
26 emails in 12 days the offer a compensation of 1 euro.
And the advised to buy the missing parts in a local auto parts store. For the future i will buy all the parts by the local store and i advised everybody to do that.
X flow is that German oil? No funnels in Wales or the UK?

Quickest makeshift funnel is the top half of a large plastic drinks bottle!

Cambelt was changed last year. And the clutch!
