Apple should include a link to this video with each purchase of Mainstage. This was REALLY helpful stuff. (Especially being able to see the changes with the CPU monitor.) I had seen another video that said to just dump every patch in one folder since they didn't use any CPU if they weren't selected. I was just about to do that with mine. It was good to be able to see that they still use resources even when not 'active'.
+Coy Stark I'm honored. I'm glad you found it helpful. It helped me as well to see the CPU meter change when I was trying to figure all this stuff out.
I'm honoured too! This vid is all my comments on a vid of this guys years ago! He needed help. If I had time to make vids instead of being a session musician...
Wow...! Five year old video and still spot on relevant in 2020. Should be required reading for all MainStage users. Huge thanks for sharing with others. God bless!
Fantastic video. Thank you. Very helpful. For me, the concert level strips were the most enlightening. I'm hoping you'll talk about patch buses at some point too. Again, excellent job.
Niels Reinholdt thanks. I'm glad it was helpful. I haven't found patch buses to be as useful in a the settings I've played. I may do a video focusing just on buses at some point and that would be a good time to talk about patch buses.
As most other comments said, great info. I continue to be amazed at the depth of this app. It would be worth it at $100-300. But $30? What a bargain. Thanks for sharing this valuable info.
Great video, so many useful tips. The reason the pad continues when you hit bypass but the piano stops is not because of the input but becaus the pad sound is still going through the reverbs and delays. If you had a similar fx chain on the piano I think it would continue on the same way.
+Scott West Thank you for watching. You are correct regarding the release after bypass. I failed to explain that as the reason. I may do an update eventually as I find things I want to add or change.
I found this information very valuable. The most helpful tip was to bypass not only instruments, but also the effects on the channel strip - and program it so one button simultaneously kills them all (temporarily of course). I will now go back to my main concert I've been using and see if I notice a significant change in CPU usage. I'll report on what I find. Thank you for this helpful video. Please share anything else you have learned on this topic. A question.... I think I may be ready to upgrade to a new Mac and can't decide between the best Mac Mini, or the basic Mac Pro. Have you noted any marked improvement in overall and CPU usage performance when using high-end MACs that utilize dual, 4, 6, or more Cores? I don't want to waste the money on multiple cores if there's not much bang for the buck. I'm presently running a late 2012 model Mac Mini that I upgraded to 16 GB RAM. CPU usage hovers between 50-75%, and I am worried I will fry my CPU. (We'll see if your tips fix that in the meantime too.) Thank you in advance. -Cameron
Thanks for the tutorial. It is really very helpful. At around 7:20 where you used the User Patches option to load a patch. MS 3.3.2 will not load a patch with alias. This is the error message I receive when loading patches with aliases, "One or more items (patches or sets) you are importing contains an alias to a channel strip not found in this concert. Choose Add to add the channel strip to the current concert, or choose Cancel to cancel the import." Thanks in advance.
Really Helpful and clear Explanations! I wonder if you have a hint for the following issue: When you instantiate a plugin, Mainstage automatically sends a 127 expression pedal message, which changes my Arturia V-Lab presets. Any tip to avoid this preset change?
Ive decided to purchase the 2015 rMacbook Pro but am torn between the cpu options. My budget is limiting me to purchase the i7 model but i would like to know whether the i5 model will suffice for mainstage. If the difference between the two is significant and is required then please do tell me. I appreciate your time to read my concern and am eager to hear your response.
Thanks for the walkthrough/knowledge. My question, should I use BYPASS for my set list 1 and 2 to f 14/songs. Most of my patches are piano, electric piano and organ and one layer. Should I or can I BYPASS each patch so that I am not using too much resources? Thank you
This video is awesome, thanks for creating it!! How do you customize MainStage font? I read Apple's help guide, but can't find the font button the help guide referred to. Thanks in advance!!
This is great! I just got the Macs Fan Control and it has helped my Mac a lot. But what setting to you usually have the fan on? Auto or custom? And if custom, constant RPM value or sensor-based value? Sorry for all these questions! I just can't find a good tutorial for it.
Questions are fine. You can do a lot of customization in that app but I honestly don't. When I'm at home using my computer I leave it on auto. That means that the the fan is functioning as it would without the app. When I play live, I change to custom. I select "constant RPM value" and simply max it out.
The point is to make sure my system is as cool as possible when live. That's why I max it out. The fan is not going to cool it off too much and you're not going to damage the fan by running it like that. That is what it is for. Theoretically the fan MIGHT wear out eventually but I bet something else will go wrong with your computer before the fan dies. Also make sure your computer is vented and that it is not filled with dust so that the fan can do what it is supposed to do.
Awesome video. It is still all sinking in. One question - I don't have that CPU monitor (or the Memory) on the top toolbar. I just have the MIDI window. How do I get those extra windows?
Daniel DuPuis I think I show it towards the beginning of the video. It's in the mainstage preferences. You have to enable it. I'm not at my computer to remember exactly. Let me know if you still can't find it.
+Luis Angel Calixto Arteaga I basically recommend getting the best you can get with your budget. But it really depends on what you are planning on using. If you will ONLY be using Mainstage with NO third party plugins, you can get by with less as long as you are careful in how you design your concert. For reference, the video was done on a 4 core 2.6ghz i7 with 16gb RAM and SSD but I also can run Mainstage on my macbook air with 4gb RAM and 1.3ghz processor. I just have to be very careful and I probably wouldn't be able to use Kontakt, Omnisphere, or similar. If you will be using third party software, then you need to look at the minimum requirements for those pieces of software. For example, Omnisphere needs at least a 2.4ghz processor. I know a number of people who use macbook pros as old as 2008 so used is definitely an option. So what I would do is get the fastest processor your budget will allow. i7 will always be better than i5 at the same clock speed. 8gb RAM is probably fine if it's an older mac because you can always upgrade. If it's a brand new macbook pro, get 16gb because you cannot upgrade that later. If you get an older mac without an SSD, upgrade the drive to SSD so include that in your budget. The new macbook pros all have SSD. I probably wouldn't consider less than 256gb storage but I have a 1 TB and it's about 2/3 full. You can always use an external drive to store extra stuff if needed - something like the Samsung T3 would make great storage for your audio samples and concerts. I encourage using a benchmark website such as - browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks - it helps you determine relative performance because a brand new i5 at 2.5ghz will perform much better than at 4 year old i5 at 2.5ghz.
Try to get 3.06ghz processor if poss. Most important. Then, quad-core better than same amount of ram across dual-core. I've been gigging many decades to get to this point in technology! This is a great time for all of us! Kind regards.
Hey, so I use a software mixer for my band and run the web based mixer in chrome whilst also using mainstage for live performance - it seems to run fine but is this going to shorten the life of my MacBook?
Good job! I have a problem. When I trigger my play function it cuts off my audio. When I start a drum loop (Ultrabeat/BFD3) and simultaneously trigger play, by an assigned foot switch, my piano sound cuts off, making a count off intro impossible. Do you have any suggestions how I can remedy this?
Michael Neal I do note use backing tracks frequently where I play now. But yes, I would bounce out the tracks with all the effects that they need rather than processing them live.
This was one of, if not the most helpful video of Mainstage, for me. On the internet.
Thank you for this.

VERY good job! This is one of the best videos I saw on how to get more CPU from Manistage. THANK YOU so much!
Fantastic video. Thank you. Very helpful. For me, the concert level strips were the most enlightening. I'm hoping you'll talk about patch buses at some point too. Again, excellent job.

Thank you so much for making this video. It was a real help to me.
Thank you as a new user of mainstage your insight is a very valuable thing.
Great job with this video. The bypass feature was especially helpful for me. I'll start using that instead of mute. Thanks again.
+jmathew22 thank you! I'm glad you were able to find something helpful.

Brad Jordan thanks for watching! It really is an amazing program. I'm so happy I decided to start using it a few years ago.
Great work. Thank you! All the really important basics are included. I have been wondering about aliases. Now I know! God bless!
What a great explanation of everything, thank you very much, This video Is Awesome

Do you use backing tracks to your playing and do you "print them with effects to save CPU?
Michael Neal I do note use backing tracks frequently where I play now. But yes, I would bounce out the tracks with all the effects that they need rather than processing them live.
I tried to save a patch in that folder and it doesn't show up on Mainstage.
Thank you! Very helpful video.
