The only spinning wheel i have was handmade in the 70' but its previous owner also gave it a hefty coat of paint. Like, all over. Its pretty sloppily done (my wife and I call it "the landlord special"). She spins great so I have no need to mess with her any time soon, but someday I /will take off that paint and either reveal the wood or give it a nicer paint job.
I'm all for painting Rachel with folksy floral motifs, I think that would look so good on her! I'm now also reminded that I have not waxed my unfinished wheel since I got her two (three?) years ago, so I think it's time to give her a polish!
I'm loving my wheels all over again after watching this. My wheels are named after a grandmother I never knew - Cassie - and her two sisters - Vera and Alice. Thank you. K
Quite late but olive oil lives to oxidize so you be best served by food grade mineral oil, Danish oil, or boiled linseed oil for a more natural alternative - although that comes with some flammability cautions. I loved this video!
I think the original Rachel is very fond of greenery & so perhaps some vines with perhaps rainbow flowers?? Or make it all over jungly leaves like Rachel’s bedroom and then paint rainbow flowers?? 🤔🤷🏼♀️🌱✨🌿🍃 It could be lovely and her painting techniques are on her channel, maybe to help guide the process/inspiration? 🤔
My wheels names are just whimsy (Jezebel, Elizabeth, and Moana). Someone gave me a wheel that they found by a garbage dumpster that was newer model of Jezebel (Louet S10). I named her Isabel as Jezebel's little sister. I repaired Isabel and found her a new home with one of my students. My next wheel will have have either a science fiction name or a fantasy name, since I am thinking of getting an e-spinner to have at my parents' place.
I am so happy to see your girls being taken care of. I love your naming convention. So fun. I think you should paint Rachel rainbow. That would be so fun.
Highly recommend making the conditioner in a double boiler. Bottom pot has water and put a canning jar or other reusable glass jar with a tight fitting lid. Put the ingredients in the jar, and let them melt together from the hot water. You can’t actually fry the oil like this, and they’re already in a jar so that you’re not getting it all over your pan.
Another comment. There was a horror movie out when I was a girl. It was titled “Car” I think. It was about a possessed car named Christine. When you told us your first wheel’s name was Christine, that movie came to mind. You certainly have picked an interesting passion, it’s a tad scary the more I listen to you clean your girls!
oh this was fun! thank u. i only have one spinning wheel. we bought her new. shes an ashford kiwi. love her. i need to give her a polish up. great video!
Don't paint Rachael until you have an idea that really inspires you and that you feel compelled to do. And you could do it over a long period, like people adding to their tattoo collections. So if you get a great idea for one part of the wheel, or a great idea for one image, do that and then leave it until the next great idea comes along. Also, I love that jumper, the close ups show how soft and shimmery the wool is. It's wildly expensive but organic turpentine is a thing - and it's very different to mineral turpentine. But if you've got a good recipe for wood wax that doesn't need turpentine, it probably doesn't matter. I cheated and bought a jar of wax from Ashfords. It is very nice wax.
Love your wheels... my girl needs a special day too.. thanks for the inspiration.. she's a Ashford Traditional.. She has 3 ratio's and I absolutely love her.. she does everything I ask her to.. the rest of the time she sits there and looks beautiful
Thanks for the wood polish recipe. I'm going to try it but I think I will use canola oil since I want to keep the scent of the bee's wax. I think the olive oil scent will over power the bee's wax perfume.
I don't think it overpowers the beeswax; but they make an interesting mix together. It's not overpowering olive oil, but also not overpowering beeswax. I first wanted to use sunflowerseed oil because that also doesn't have as much of a smell, but I didn't have enough of that.
Hi Jente, I hope you're OK xx ❣️❣️❣️ Thankyou so much for sharing this video podcast and your "Wheel Spa Day."🎡🎡🎡🎡 They Spin amazingly and now have their well deserved Rewards. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 If you paint the White Wheel ( sorry forgot her name) maybe you could paint one of your favourite Castles 🏩or like Evie paint some birds 🐦on it I hope you're having a Wonderful Week 🌟✨️ Happy Spinning Fibre Friend 🎡🐑🥰 Take care and stay safe Lots of love and Big Hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂🫂🐕
My argument is thus: Rachel the human would want you to paint Rachel the wheel and make her ~whimsy~ Flowers would be nice but rainbow wheel also a great idea
I know how much you love to honor your local traditions and culture so if you paint Rachel, maybe you could take inspiration from historical painted regional motifs? You could even look at historical textiles as inspiration.
This video gave me such joy. :) :) The wheels look lovely and so well cared for. I have not named either my loom or my spinning wheel. I just call the loom "BIG BOI" lol
Aaw I love seeing all your girls together, and looking soooo much more splendid now than ever. They really are all so very special. Consider me up for waxing my Bertha after I return home from my weekend away... where I shall infact be cleaning and waxing my daughter's new 'old' furniture acquisition. You couldn't have timed this video any more perfect for me if you tried lol 🥰
thank you so much for this video! I er ... haven't done anything good like this to my Kiwi (I have dusted it regularly though and it wasn't used), but yes, it might be something to look into to, and something to do to my spindles! :)
Olive oil is a good choice! Some food grade oils can go rancid. I think canola oil and vegetable oil can rot and shouldn't be used for stuff like this, but I'm not positive.
The wheels do look beautiful after the waxing session! What did you use on the microfiber cloth for cleaning? This video inspired me to clean and condition my own wheel!
With the microfiber cloth I used nothing extra, but I used a little sponge on Bernadette, where she had big black grease stains and I used a bit of water and mild soap there to break up the layers of grease.
Painting over Rachel is a great idea! She already has a base coat.. I think a rainbow or even more of the pride colors is a great idea! 😁 A pride wheel would be great!
My mother learned the art of Swiss ‘Bauernmalerei’ - literally translated ‘farmer’s painting’, which is a painting style I think you would appreciate as you mentioned your fondness of folksy motifs. Perhaps it.s something you’d like to investigate if you ever decide to paint something on one of your spinning wheels. She’s out of the country right now (returning this coming October-November), I could ask her if I can take a look at her books of traditional motifs if you’re interested, and email you some designs or pictures. With your artistic flair and knowledge of painting, you would certainly be able to design something absolutely gorgeous, and those patterns might inspire you. As you well know, paint and anything greasy or oily do not really go together. It would be alot of work to remove the wheel, de-grease it, perhaps sand the surfaces you wish to paint, actually do the painting and then, after protecting your work, to re-assemble. Doing it without disassembling would be backbreaking work and might make painting quite difficult. But if you’re game, I have absolutely no doubt the end result would turn that wheel into a heritage piece to treasure even more than now. Thank you for showing the beeswax recipe. My SO has beautiful cutting boards he used to treat with oil. The oil he used isn’t being sold anymore. I was looking for an alternative. Now I’ll just make him sole cutting board ointment. 😊
I thought of Sleeping Beauty when you asked if any of your wheels had a knife. Lol! You can still poke yourself with a poisoned spikey thing on a spinning wheel, so beware.
It is a topic of much debate where Sleeping Beauty poked herself. It might be that the flyer hooks were thorns in earlier days, or that she actually got a splinter from the flax she was spinning... Modern wool wheels? You'd really have to do your best to get poked/stabbed by anything on them. I'm very safe in their company :D

The landlord special 😅

It's time indeed :D
Hmm, love making the conditioner!!
Thank you!
Wheels look incredible!!! Also I drank water when you did, thank you!
Hydration!
I'm loving my wheels all over again after watching this. My wheels are named after a grandmother I never knew - Cassie - and her two sisters - Vera and Alice. Thank you. K
That's so special!
Your wheels look fantastic after Spa day! I'll definitely try this wood conditioner on my Jean-Louët, thank you for the recipe and demonstration :D
My Flemish brain: Jean-Louët Michel? 😂
@@MijnWolden 🤣 Jean-Louët Lerouet ^^

Rainbow flowers is a great idea!

Whimsy is the best convention though
Sci-fi names for electric wheels is such a cute idea!
I am so happy to see your girls being taken care of. I love your naming convention. So fun. I think you should paint Rachel rainbow. That would be so fun.
It would, right?
Echoing many others in the comments here to say floral motifs for Rachel is a lovely idea!
I think so too :D
Your girls are looking amazing after the spa day!
Right?! :D
My wheel, Julia, is now jealous! so I think I know what my weekend has in store! lol Thank you for the reminder!!!
Always listen to jealous wheels :D
I have a Louet Julia and I love her!

Great video ☺️ I have a Jente in Denmark 🥰
awh

Now I know what movie not to watch. I cannot handle horror movies...

Traditionals are a thing of beauty, that's for sure!

They do :D
Hi Jente, I hope you're OK xx ❣️❣️❣️

Castle would be epic, but also pretty difficult on a circle maybe?
My argument is thus:
Rachel the human would want you to paint Rachel the wheel and make her ~whimsy~
Flowers would be nice but rainbow wheel also a great idea
Whismy is the keyword indeed :D
I know how much you love to honor your local traditions and culture so if you paint Rachel, maybe you could take inspiration from historical painted regional motifs? You could even look at historical textiles as inspiration.
Now you got my brain all working! We don't have folk motifs like Hungary for example... But flanders was king in millefleurs and verdure tapestry...
This video gave me such joy. :) :) The wheels look lovely and so well cared for.
I have not named either my loom or my spinning wheel. I just call the loom "BIG BOI" lol
Big boi sounds great 😁
My new (to me) Ashford wheel is called Jente! :)
🥺♥️
Aaw I love seeing all your girls together, and looking soooo much more splendid now than ever. They really are all so very special. Oh, have fun waxing!
They look so fresh now ❤
Right?!
Hello!! So good to see your face between all your beauties.
hello :)
They look so fancy! :D I made the same conditionner with some linseed oil and I love how it makes the wood shine!
They just look brand new with a bit of oil!
thank you so much for this video! I er ... haven't done anything good like this to my Kiwi (I have dusted it regularly though and it wasn't used), but yes, it might be something to look into to, and something to do to my spindles! :)
It's surprisingly easy, so yes, look into it :)

My idea right now is rainbow flower motifs :D

Yeah, sanding and degreasing will be absolutely necessary
Do you wax where the drive band sits? Where do you omit the wax?
I waxed everything, but rubbed it off everywhere as well
