My daughter’s pediatrician is from Cuba and we spoke about it and she said never EVER even visit there. I had to fight my way out and now she’s a successful doctor who is the most compassionate and hardworking doctor I’ve ever met. My daughter has health issues since COVID and we see a lot of doctors but her pediatrician would come in on her days off and gave me her personal cell number to contact her. She even called me while on vacation once over seas during her sons wedding because I needed advice on a Sunday. So knowing that she is legit scared to go back to Cuba makes me never want to visit.

I went to Havana last year. It’s unbelievable. There is no food. No joke. The decay is systemic and is mind blowing. The people are miserable. I urge all to go and check it out. It’s quite the experience. Even the stray dogs and cats are starving. it’s awful.

When my daughters were 10 and 12, I took them on a mission trip to Mexico to build "shelters" for the poorest of the poor (e.g. families living in cardboard boxes if they were lucky etc). It was my first time also. It was explained to us that less than 1% of the entire world lives like we do in the U.S. (western world) emphasizing how we have more than 99% of the world.
When we gave the Mexican family the key to their very humble shelter (plywood walls, no water, electric..) they wept with happiness and gratefullness, and so did we-we were so humbled. My kids were changed for life-hands down the best thing I ever did as a Mom.

The churches (or other entity) raise the money and ppl to build the house. The ministry coordinates everything. Its been 20+ years since I went but the ministry is still active. Many years ago I worked in retail. A young girl that I worked with still had relatives in Cuba, and arranged to go have a visit. At that time you could not fly directly to Cuba she went through Central America, which was somewhat illegal at the time. She took one of her girlfriends from the store with her. They packed lots of extra clothing, and when they came back they left everything that they had brought with them. they gave literally all the clothes and shoes they had other than the clothing on their back to go home in. because the people there had no new clothing. they gave all the food they brought in their suitcases, including jars and jars and jars of peanut butter . The people were so grateful they were so hungry. That was about 25 years ago, and I'm not surprised to see that it's pretty much the same. This is so very very sad.

The toilet thing is for public toilets, though, so you can just use the one at home or wherever you are staying, right? If so, I don't see the issue. Half the time the public toilets in the US are out of toilet paper anyway.
The grocery thing is confusing but once you understand the system everyone else uses to get food, I am sure it makes more sense. You can't just "not buy groceries" and starve to death so what's the local option? Grow things, raise animals, local trade, something, I'm sure.
ETA: Cooked meat can be left in open air, in general. The US government just enjoys waste and encourages you to refrigerate and then toss meat within a couple of days.

Statistics show the poor in America live better than most Upper Middle/Upper Class in 3rd world countries. We are SO blessed in the USA! If you don't know what other people go through JUST TO LIVE DAY TO YOU, then you are so out of touch to other people's struggles. I know so many Americans are not grateful for what they have here need to snap out of it before another country sees the state of things here.....and tries to take freedom from us! Study the past, don't let your guard down! PRAY!

Usually the meat is “cured” meaning it was dried out with smoke or salt rubs. It helps to preserve the meat. This is why in Hispanic culture they don’t do any other temperature of meat other than well done. Since refrigeration is lacking meat needs to be heated up hot hot hot to cook of the bacteria!
There’s an awesome channel where the wife is American and the husband came to the us about 6months ago and it follows his journey of adjusting to the us. Some of the things like the amount of choices at the grocery store literally blew him out of his shoes! He was overwhelmed with the amount of choices but incredibly sad the people from back home don’t know how it culd be!
I think with the age of the internet it will be much harder for these dictatorships to keep their people in the dark. We’re seeing this in places with severe censorship like North Korea and China!

This channel here is that same couple unless theres also another couple having the exact same journey.
