A couple of key points here; At 5:10, rotate your tailgate back up to almost closed angle then move the right side so it clears before you slide right. It should slide right effortlessly and you won't ram the side of the tailgate into the truck bed like you did. The reason is because there is a torsion rod that engages at the hinge on left side and it's difficult to slide off when it's under tension. I had a tailgate ding that a private shop was repairing for me. The couldn't get the tailgate to slide off, I explained to him about the torsion spring being loaded but insisted he needed a pry bar, "because these things tend to stick". When he was getting the prybar I tipped the gate up and I had it off before he returned. At 7:55, I would suggest to the limit cables back on so you don't mar the paint on the pretty side of your tailgate on the bumper top. I added a tailgate lowering damper also because it should have came with one, in my opinion. There seems to be two styles; internal mounts on the passenger side and external on the driver side. Great video though!
The similar step installed on my 2017 Ford F-350 Lariat Crew Cab FX4 DRW was not opening once the manual button was pressed. After watching your video, I was able to get the step out and find that the two springs (one at the back of each step leg) were compressed over time to the point that they would not open my tailgate step. So I installed two 1 inch long bolts (one in each leg spring) at the bottom of the springs (not at the top). The length of the head of the bolts was enough such that when fully reassembled, the springs opened the tailgate step and everything functioned properly. 'Thought this might be a helpful comment.
Thanks, I was in the middle of doing mine, then it just would not come off. Watched your vid---DUH the PLUG! I FORGOT THE ELECTRICAL PLUG! Glad it didn't come off. One correction though, the two bottom 10mm nuts do not have to come off to slide the step assy out. They are alignment pins. Easier to leave em on there.
I'm trying to figure out how to retro fit the remote open part. I have the tailgate step & assist, just need to figure out the rest. I had it on my 18 raptor & really liked it. I know i need 2 remote keys from a platinum, but I need to know the part # for the solenoid & code for forscan.
I wish my 2018 had the tailgate step. What I will never understand is the first owner custom ordered the truck, chose to get the power running boards, but not the tailgate step.
I know this video is over a year old, but I searched for tailgate step issues and found this. Do you know how to take apart the actual handle for the tailgate step? The other day I opened the tailgate step and when flipped the handle up, I heard something inside the handle fall to the bottom. Sounded like a small pebble or something got inside it. Now the handle will not retract all the way so the step will not close and latch properly. I was thinking maybe if I can somehow remove the smaller "step 1" part of the handle I could get out whatever is inside the handle blocking it.
Yes. You should be able to. There are 2 small bolts on the back of the handle. There might be a couple clips and a spring also. Thats probably the issue.
My 2017 f250 tailgate step wont open when I press the button. Any suggestions? It used to work okay but within the last year or so it would sometimes not open and now just completely stopped opening
Push the button in while using a flat head screwdriver to push the step out. Then I suggest opening the whole thing up to adjust the springs at the bottom. Just like I did in the video. Should work. 👍
I bought this exact truck used and just realized the power tailgate handle housing is completely broken. The electronics still work but the soft sensor to open the tailgate is swimming around in there. I am looking to replace it but all the handles are about 120-200 bucks. Does anyone know if I can just buy the housing and put the camera and button into it from the old one?
Howdy! Enjoyed the video. Do you have any video on how to adjust the striker plate/latch on the f150 platinum tailgate? My tailgate doesn't close flush on the passenger side and I cant figure out how to adjust it.
When you take the step out the tailgate has some kind of spring that keeps the tailgate from dropping all the way flat. What is that and how do you remove it? I took my step out because it was rusty and broken but now the tailgate is too light and doesn’t drop all the way.
@@ricardosworkshop coz i trying to swap 2015 platinum tailgate with tailgate step on my lariat,,but the platinum don't have camera on it men,,the sale guy take out the camera
What's the black plastic thing with the 2 big bolts for, I was gonna install a 60" led bar right there but because of the 🔩 🔩 I can't, will it effect the tailgate if I remove the plastic piece with the 2 bolts?? Thank you
It's actually metal, on mine at least, and I believe it functions to help the tailgate from sliding right to left, putting pressure on the side panels that have been known to loosen up when offroading. It has two bolts and an extended piece of metal that goes into the tailgate itself. They removed mine when I had them install a third brake light. The aftermarket brake light has failed after 5 years, so I'm reinstalling that part.
Wondering the same thing, as I’m about to swap my entire step assembly & would like to avoid removing the tailgate if possible. Guess I’ll know soon enough. I dropped something heavy on mine & broke the plastic slide bushing which they used to offer as a “slider repair kit” on last model F-150 / Superduty trucks, but apparently it’s not available for the 2017+ yet🤷♂️
Great video! How do you go about replacing the actual step from the integrated tailgate step? I bought the part from eBay, but can't figure out now to replace it. Could u u help?
My friend and I tried to remove my tailgate from my 2019 XLT with the step so that we could install a soft close assist. We could not get that tailgate off the truck. Fortunately we just hold the right hand side out as far as we could so that we can unbolt the receiver and replace the new receiver with the shock. Is anybody is strong enough to take that thing off by them self !?!?

Awesome info! Thanks for the comment Rowdy!
I was hoping to just install the step and not buy the whole tail gate😢. But nice video and i got the answer i needed. 👍

You're right. Probably need a module and the hardware for the tailgate. Then programming the remote with Forscan 👍👍

I wish my 2018 had the tailgate step. What I will never understand is the first owner custom ordered the truck, chose to get the power running boards, but not the tailgate step.
What is the function of the hard black plastic guide on the truck side towards the right? There is a metal flange in the tailgate that goes in it.
The piece I touch at 5:49 isn't connected to anything. Not sue what its for. But it reminds me of a sideways opening gate. I don't know though.
Great video bro!
Can you add a step to a tailgate without one?

What do u know anything about Removing the inner components, I have a king ranch and bought a new tailgate with the chrome tailgate applique...
What interior components?
Can you make a video on how the auto tailgate works?
Like with the fob? I went over it on this... th-cam.com/video/hjblZXZfhp0/w-d-xo.html
Ricardo's Workshop no. The mechanical latch or actuator. I’m curious to what makes the tailgate pop open. Thank you!

The damper is behind the passenger taillight. It's easy to remove. Just unplug it.
Maybe adjust the torsion bar.
Is it possible to install a tailgate step on a 2018 raptor without a tailgate step?
The internals and the whole frame is different. You have to get the whole thing

Chuck, these tailgates are pretty heavy. But I was able to pop it out after I removed the step.
No matter what I do. I've watched every damn video on yt. The left side will not slide out.
It does take a little force. The older trucks were easier. The first time i did it i was surprised how hard i had to pull it.

I have the same issue. We even got a rubber maul top make the left side slide out... 2 big guys. Nothing will make that tailgate move out.
I had to use a ball joint seprater to get apart. The torsion bar is damaged now. What led me to here.
