Setting Up a Home Web Server

  • Years ago, before large hosting companies dominated the internet, people hosted their own web servers. While it's not as common any more, it's still easy to do, and, when done properly, is more secure than storing your information on someone else's servers. Here's how to set up a basic LAMP server on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
    Ubuntu: www.ubuntu.com/
    phpMyAdmin: www.phpmyadmin....

    Jacob, because of this video I'm going to try and give the Web Server setup a shot. Hopefully you're still around for comments in case I have issues. After looking at other tutorials yours seems to make the most sense to me. So I'm off to install Ubuntu 14.04.

    Jacob that was an excellent video thank you, straightforward instruction with the right amount of explanation. You did this with authority and assurance, no mumbling, no awkward silences or stumbling over details. Brilliant I will definitely follow up on your port forwarding and website content videos. Anyone watching your videos will feel confident in the tutorial and will be enthused to carry out your instructions. I'm looking at this in 2018 so I expect a few things have changed but the basic premise remains intact.

    Nice tutorial Jacob, but the question is how to "connect" the domain name with the server? To access the website from another PC (well, from internet). To make it fully behave like web server.

    Hello I made a comment about a year ago on one of these youtube videos about Uniserver and wordpress plugins. Since then I have been trying to find the person that gave me a really good answer! I was also wondering if anyone knows of and more informal videos about the running, configuring and maintaining a website using the Uniserver and Wordpress combo? There are many things in the uniservers set up/ configuration that I could really use some help with. And vice versa? Any new updated videos would be much appreciated by myself and I am sure many others to!

    Hello great video ,I want to ask some questions
    if I have very complicated php script something like social network with chat system,notification...
    should I create my own home server() or should I buy hostplan?

    • @NerdOnTheStreet
      @NerdOnTheStreet  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any computer made in the past 10 years should be able to run PHP scripts, so it's less about how complicated the scripts are and more about how many people will be using them. If you think you're going to have more than, say, 50 visitors at any given time, I would definitely recommend professional hosting simply because a home internet connection probably couldn't support that many concurrent users if you're doing real-time things like chat and notifications. Less than that, and a home server might work fine (for the record, that number is a completely arbitrary guess, and you'd really have to just try it out to get an exact number).

    • @NerdOnTheStreet
      @NerdOnTheStreet  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your question is less about programming and more about system administration. Large companies would have two different people (or teams) for those two tasks. If they hired one person and made that extremely vague request, then they're probably small enough that you could get away with using a setup like the one in this video. Just be careful with your security-- I'd have to know the details of your company's network and server infrastructure to be any more specific than that.

There is actually an IT department but they're kind of separate because our office is a little bit sensitive, so I may ask them for some help but at the same time I have a strict order to try my best to handle this project on my own because it is kind of confidential and only exclusive for our office. I'm so ready to learn but I'm still lost, I don't know what I need, how and where to start :( Ty!

    Will the speed of the server affect the speed of people browsing the website. In other words, can you run a server on an underpowered computer, the one I want to use on the server is 8 years old

    • @NerdOnTheStreet
      @NerdOnTheStreet  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jaden Hamer It depends on what you're running and how many people you're talking about. For an HTML file and just a few people, you won't notice a difference between an underpowered computer and a powerful server. If you've got a few thousand people browsing your website and/or you're running a really complicated PHP application, then the speed will start to matter more.

  • @KLP99
    @KLP99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It would be nice to hear everyone start pronouncing UBUNTU as OO BOON TOO, which is how it should be said. Just saying...
    I'm thinking of moving to Debian instead of CentOS, but if I do, I'll use Linux Mint LMDE Server Edition, which is being done by one dude, and props to him.
    Ubuntu is pretty awesome for beginners, however Linux Mint is much more user friendly, plus they have 3 flavors for desktops, Cinnamon, Mate, and LMDE (Mate is pronounced Mah Tay, and LMDE stands for Linux Mint Debian Edition).
    I've been using LInux as my primary OS for over 20 years now, and it's awesome, clean, and I've never had a virus. Not one. Okay that's not quite correct. I loaded a directory with viruses and virus-infested emails. They didn't mess with the OS, but they were there, so I guess I was infected.
    Good video, btw. Thank you for making it, and keep the good stuff going. More technical is good. Those who don't understand can do Google searches to learn those parts, and if that isn't helpful enough, join a forum and start browsing your questions (don't ask them unless they aren't found anywhere already).

    • @NerdOnTheStreet
      @NerdOnTheStreet  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can you? Yes. However, Kali is a distro specifically geared toward network security testing, and I see no reason why anyone would want to use it for a web server over a more generic distro like Ubuntu or Debian. The preinstalled tools aren't going to help, and might even get in the way. I would recommend against it for the specific purpose of being a web server.
