Nice presentation, extra points for talking and typing at the same time, moving right along with the content, getting it right so we all can do it. Thank you very much.
Frank... I have been searching all over the net for a simple instruction set on how to do this... This video was AWESOME!!! Clear Concise and simple. Hope you have other video's out there for other things as I will be looking :)
I've watched a lot of videos showing how "easy" it is it share files between Windows and Linux but every one of them either left out a critical component or simply did not work. Your video changed everything for me. Clear, complete, and super simple. I now have a working server and am happily sharing files between all my computers. As an added bonus, I learned a lot of Linux command line stuff, as well. Thank you so much for this breath of fresh air, Frank. You are a lifesaver. You've gained a new subscriber!
just set up my very own home server with this amazing tutorial :) i wish the old youtube rating system was back because this video deserves a full 5/5 from me. Thankyou so much
Not just great instruction, but I have finally seen a walk through of a project; finally some of those CLI commands make immediate sense. Thanks for this
From another Frank! A great video with complete step by steps... but it was so rapidly done in New territory for me, that I will have to happily boost your "views" significantly while taking notes to get it all down and then feel brave enough to do it on my own. Thanks again.
+Frank Miller Thank you Frank. One of these days I'll get my website going and the steps will all be there. Until then just use pause and take a few notes and you should be good.
Thanks you so much, I had search and ck document's on-line didn't get all the answer you video was very well down. just don't understand the people that give this video tums down, why, it's very well instructional video, the instruction to the point and worked for first time for me-thx again .
Best video out there! I was thinking about a Server but like u said, information in not all in check. Very good video! Good and clear voice, very well done!
@Frank I hope all is well for you. I wanted to say this is probably the best tutorials I have ever viewed on TH-cam. I hope you have new videos planned. My best, Roger
With your teaching ability, I would love to see some tutorials on how to automate server tasks (or something else) with scripts (preferably using Python).
Great video. I am a Linux newbie. I have installed Linux Mint on my laptop. I plan to build a home lab to learn on and will install Unbuntu Server on an older PC. Again, very helpful video!
Another great video Frank, but a little too fast for me. I had a friend set up my fileserver several years ago, but he will not be around much longer to help me with repairs and maintenance. This video will help.
From yet another Frank... Thanks for this. I've been using Linux for some time, but have not yet gotten into servers. I have an extra machine that I will put to use. Awesome!
Good stuff ! 👍🏽🔥Very detailed .I will try this to see how easy it Is to run . I’m Using a Nas right now but I’m interested in setting up on some older hardware.
Frank (or should I call you Oscar?), Wonderful video tutorial. And I happen to be someone that used to make them for a living. I was just telling someone that all the info I find is exactly as you say. Either outdated or wrong. Or in terms of YT videos, in broken English. One thing you did not cover, and it is the thing I and many others have had problems with. While we have this issue with the desktop rather than server, it should be the same. The issue is with EXTERNAL USB drives attached to the Ubuntu server/share. These shared folders or drives are being seen on Windows, but you can't open them. I gather all your examples are folders placed onto the main drive, not external. The "solutions" I find are many and varied and mostly very complex. And mostly, from what I have read, don't resolve the issue. Plus, ultimately, I would like to be streaming to various Firestick like clients. Thanks!
Great tutorial! I have tried and tried using other videos and have not been able to successfully get my file server up and running. I was able with your help. I got my windows box connected no problem, but I'm having some difficulties getting the debian box to work. I will figure it out. Thanks!
Very useful! At first I was confused but after a second time watching, it became more clear! I don't really need this for now but I will surely need it in the future, so this was really informative! Thanks!
These files are being shared on the LAN the keyword was "Home" I missed that a little lol. I wanted to access the files remotely. I would need a graphical interface on the server end or just setup VNC. I think a good alternative is a proxmox virtual machine server you can run multiple virtual machines on the server or cluster them. They have a web GUI. This way you can see your files and folders, and access them on the fly if needed. The only way into this remotely is to configure ssh and for viewers not proficient in linux that is really hard, I would probably mess something up lol. Or you could use "webmin" it lets you do a raid zero (connecting multiple drives together as one mass storage device) and again gives you a easy to use web GUI. This tutorial was perfect from start to end though, you explained everything in detail at an easy to follow pace and with a pleasant temperament. Plus no annoying theme song , with no audio on the tutorial just a visual usually going way too fast. Always a big + for me. So this video did get me thinking I have an old Dell Optiplex 780sff with a core 2 duo that I will install the proxmox and but I will use Franks method with a Dell Dimension 3000 it has a Pentium 4 lol. If the tower in the beginning of this video can get this done then I am confident the Dimension will too. I was going to throw Lubuntu on there because its so light weight but so is this Samba Server version of Ubuntu,,,, With all this talk about Microsoft buying Ubuntu, I know the container is available on the Microsoft store which is scary.. Should I be concerned about an "invasion of privacy" from Microsoft's new spy lens. I know this video is from a while back so some things have changed with Ubuntu. I saw that you didn't use encryption, with all thats going on with privacy it might not be a bad idea. From the command line users can generate a private and public passkeys pretty easily & there are tons of tutorials on it. I mean unless there are just some kitty videos Microsoft can have fun watching those if they want ; )
Turning on Network Discovery on Windows computers connected to public networks is *not* a wise thing to do, make sure you're connected to (or set your network as) a private network. Very enlightening video!
really nice video frank very informative about hot to fallow steps very well thanks, don't know if is to much to ask, but you shuld make more videos about hosting a server using linux not just for file sharing. again man thanks i will experiment with an old desktop computer i got
This video will come in handy when I’m installing Ubuntu server on my old Mac mini soon.
Thanks a lot 🙂
I love this video. I must have watched it many times over the last 5 years since I found it.
Frank, the best video I have seen. Very clear, informative and and to-the-point!!!. Thank you so much.
I wanted to comment the same... :) Thanks..
I want to say the same!!
Frank doesn't pretend everyone viewing the video is an idiot :) it saves sitting through endless droning about how computers work :) great vid!
I agree! I would love a separate video that focuses on troubleshooting. Maybe I'll make it once I figure out why mine isn't working.
I agree!
This might be the most useful video I have watched on this topic so far.
15 years on linux and this is best samba setup I've seen!
Nice presentation, extra points for talking and typing at the same time, moving right along with the content, getting it right so we all can do it. Thank you very much.
Great job, i was looking something this.
My Wife takes many Photos and now i have found a solution for her
Thanks
Frank... I have been searching all over the net for a simple instruction set on how to do this... This video was AWESOME!!! Clear Concise and simple. Hope you have other video's out there for other things as I will be looking :)
every Linux user: "it's easy!" *hundreds and hundreds of key strokes later* " and we're done!"
what about adding a folder? etc. It's easy, open a terminal and type mkdir FOLDER NAME. and we're done
But at least its possible to do it
Funny comment tho
Hundreds?
Paul couldn't have said it better (Easy server setup is limited to 7.3 keystrokes).
Probably the best tutorial I've ever watched. Thank you so much!

I just wish I could give you more thumbs up. Had to redo the setup again, but it was worth it, I was running in loops. Now it's done. Thanks!
Plain and directly to the point. Thank you for your know how sharing and time spent to make this video.
Frank, this the best step by step video I have seen, the sequence and sync of the video is unbelievable. Thanks for all.
First class video on Samba. Thank you
This is the best Ubuntu server video I have ever seen! Amazing! It’s such a chase you don’t make new videos.
This is an excellent tutorial, thanks for taking the time to make it. It has worked perfectly for me on an old PC. Awesome job!
Thanks you so much, I had search and ck document's on-line didn't get all the answer you video was very well down. just don't understand the people that give this video tums down, why, it's very well instructional video, the instruction to the point and worked for first time for me-thx again .
One of the best tutorial videos I've ever watched (without any skip)! Thank you for helping
awesome description from many angles. quick and to the point.
Great video, I set up mine, with virtual box and DHCP configuration rather than manual just for testing purpose and it works perfectly.
Awesome tutorial, I followed this with Ubuntu 20.04 but used nano for editor and got my machine to do everything I needed it to do. Great job!
Best video out there! I was thinking about a Server but like u said, information in not all in check. Very good video! Good and clear voice, very well done!
Very nice tutorial for setting this up. Thank you!
What a great video tutorial. No need to buy an overpriced NAS anymore! Thank you so much!
Paul I would still recommend a nas server because of the reliability and efficiency they provide.
@Frank
I hope all is well for you.
I wanted to say this is probably the best tutorials I have ever viewed on TH-cam. I hope you have new videos planned.
My best,
