    That meta joke just made me imagine Rob Pulsen talking to himself in a recording booth. And hey they finally got Gilbert Gottfried to voice a character that wasn't a bird.

    I feel like "don't be petty towards one series" should be Rule #1 of any crossover ever.
    Glad this one thrived not only on that regard but in a whole bunch of others as well. Getting the original actors after 25 years is a MASSIVE bonus.
    And yes, what everyone else said. Happy Phelous is a rare gem to be appreciated.

      Turtles Forever wasn't being petty though, that's what Phelous was dead wrong about, hell the original turtles actually saved the day with their exploding throwing stars.

    It's no surprise that Trans-Dimensional Turtles was more of an homage and less of a parody than Turtles Forever. Peter Laird - one of the original co-creators of the Turtles - had a lot of influence over the 2003 series (approving each script), and he hated the original 1987 cartoon. Also, as much as I love the 2K3 series, one of its weak points was humor; while some lines were clever, very few were as likely to elicit guffaws as other incarnations of the turtles. Mikey's constant pop culture references could easily get a bit old, and some jokes were just awful, and not in the fun groany way (Splinter's closing joke at the end of the Season 6 episode "Timing is Everything" is so terrible, it actually makes me as angry as Peter Laird when he hears the words "Venus DeMilo"). Is it any surprise, then, that they couldn't handle the humor of the 1987 Turtles all that well?
    However, to Turtles Forever's credit, it does do SOME things well. The 1987 characters look way better in TF than they do in the 2D segments of TDT. They did a great job of matching not only character designs, but backgrounds and props as well (Shredder's first scene is in a room ripped straight from the first episode of the 1987 cartoon, and that sniffing device was from Lotus Blossom's first episode). Some aspects of the humor were spot on, with Shredder and Krang keeping their "old married couple" chemistry, Raphael's use of the "I resemble that remark" punchline (used a couple of times in the series), and they made better use of the 1987 characters' penchant for puns than the new TDT.
    In the end, while my feelings on Turtles Forever are mixed, but leaning towards positive, Trans-Dimensional Turtles was good OVERALL. Sorry, 2K3... but the things that made you a great series also made you ill-equipped to handle this kind of a crossover.

      I don't think so, it was a movie length special, it wasn't clearly as rushed as this was. The only good bit of humor was the Megan Fox joke.
      Plus it took way more of a shit on the old show than Turtles Forever did, it retconed Krang's origin and had him sent to the 80's continuity as a punishment!

    • @theheroesofcrash311
      @theheroesofcrash311 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      trustno173 Actually in the original series, Krang had said that he'd lost his old body when "they banished me to this miserable mudball!" But throughout the series, it was never said WHO banished Krang. This actually offers an explanation as to how Krang got to the 80s Turtles' universe that ties into the original series' canon pretty well.
      Still, I can see how it made Krang look a bit dumber than usual, and even the Turtles were a little sillier than they used to be, but at least this time around, the Turtles weren't crying at danger, laughing at every joke, and giving everyone noogies.

    • @trustno173
      @trustno173 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheHeroesOfCRASH
      It's been a while since I've seen Turtles Forever but I'm pretty certain they never cried, laughed at every joke, or gave anyone noogies.
      I don't even like the old turtles, I find them unbearable and insufferable and the only good thing to ever come from them was the first movie so I think TF wasn't making enough fun of them. It came off more as an affectionate parody there but here they directly insulted the old show; they show a fight between the old turtles and Krang while the new ones watch and comment how lame it is and they do the pizza into the camera thing from the old intro and 2012 Raph has to save old Raph before the robot can recover, seriously I find it weird how Turtles Forever gets bashed by some fans while this gets praised.

    All Turtles Forever had going for it was the animation and the extended run time. Other than that, this episode shows us how a crossover should be done with these guys. It's two worlds crossing paths. Not 80 minutes of, "The old show sucks, look how much better the new one is. Isn't it awesome how the new show takes things seriously unlike the old show? Man, isn't this the best crossover ever!?"
    If your going to pay tribute to a show and their fanbase, DON'T treat them like shit that should be ashamed of what they love.
    Oh, the new show makes fun of the old series, sure. But here's the difference, in TMNT Forever, it was CONSTANT and the classic turtles just took it like they didn't care.
    This episode on the other hand, when 2012 Raph makes fun of them, classic Raph reminds us of his cool but rude attitude by throwing insults of his own when talking about the impostors... "I'm sorry, did I say 'Impostors'? I meant, 'TURTLES'."
    Another thing I loved, the 87 turtles refereed to the others by their full names... like in the original show. It's nice to see little nods like that.

    • @DrBigt
      @DrBigt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Stephendw The thing is, in TMNT Forever the jokes at the old series got to the point that it began to get more mean spirited, I mean the claim that Technodrome had a poor technology and the Turtles not able to lift sewer covers and all of that was just way too much. Besides, no jokes were played on the new TMNT which made it feel like they were just salty and trying to overly much push their new product, that was the impression I got from watching the special.

    • @Jesterclown17
      @Jesterclown17 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      +Drbigt let's plays
      One thing that really got annoying was even when the 87 Turtles pulled through, the 2003 turtles still had to insult them in some way. Leo calls their Turtle Van "Not half bad!" and Raph retorts, "Not half good, either." The 87 Turtles present their weapons to take on the bad guys, Raph gives them crap, "What, was your clown car out for repair?" They give the classic team shit for shouting "Turtle Power!" like it's the stupidest thing, but no one bats an eye when they spew out "It's ninja time!" or "What the shell this," and "What the shell that!"
      03 Donnie chastises 87 Donnie's portal beam idea and belittles him over how he goes about inventing. Well, 87 Donnie proves the other wrong and... nothing. It goes on ignored because the writers can't have their favorite Turtles admit they were wrong.
      In fact... I find kind of funny, in order to make their 03 Turtles cooler by comparison, the writers had to dumb down the originals and made sure never to paint them in any positive light while constantly glorifying their favorite Turtles. Comes off as petty, really.

    oh man! I am definitely going to have to watch this episode!. I used to watch the 2003 series and really enjoyed it but absolutely hated the rather spiteful nature of the crossover. It was like they wanted to show just how 'better' and 'superior' the 2003 turtles were.
    THIS series version looks like they did much more justice and paid far more respect to the original series!. and I am ecstatic to hear they will be doing another episode with Bebop and Rocksteady in.
    You know what, if the 2003 one doesn't get mentioned in the next crossover episode, then I see that as a form of Karma, for the way they treated the characters in their crossover.

    When the Donnies entered the Prime Turtles' dimention and they just stayed in their original form (2012 is 3D and 1987 is 2D) It was very clever from the creators because from this comic the turtles were born.
    It's like a family where each kid looks similar to their parents but each of them is different in his way.
    So when the Donnies entered the comic dimention it was like kids visiting their parents.
    To be more clear: I think it's a nice way of the creators to say 'Thanks' to the comic for creating the turtles, keeping the Donnies in how they originally suppose to look in their serieses and NOT changing them into comics as well was their way to show that the comics are one of the kind and all of these reincarnations can't beat them but they can help keep their stories alive.

    As someone else pointed out, a big reason why Turtles Forever took a ton of potshots at the 87 Turtles is because Peter Laird was more heavily involved in the 2003 series, and he hates the 1987 show. Kevin Eastman meanwhile has said he's fine with the 1987 show because it helped bring TMNT into the mainstream.
    Also while Laird was involved with the 2003 series, Eastman wasn't as they had split at the time due to Eastman wanting to move on to other projects. However now it's the other way around, Laird pretty much retired from TMNT after Turtles Forever, while Eastman returned to TMNT by acting as a writer on some new comics starting in 2011, and he works as an adviser on the 2012 series.

      The creators hated the 87 show so much that at the end of Secret of the Ooze David Warner's character was going to be revealed to be an Utrom but they canceled it because they didn't want kids to think it was Krang, a character they hated with a passion.
      And apparently whenever the 03 writers suggested doing Krang the creators told them "Hell no." They were lucky to get ONE episode with Rat King, that how toxic the creators see the 87 show, at best they see it as a necessary evil.

  • @FireRising86

    It's really too bad that the newest crossover feels more like Turtles Forever than this. They go back to chastising the old school TMNT over not being competent and not using their weapons, and Shredder and Krang are literally too dumb to live, more so than 87 Bebop and Rocksteady. It had promise and a longer run time, but I feel like the 87 TMNT were kinda given the shaft.
    At least the brief 2D moments are better animated.

    • @junkylake
      @junkylake 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I really don't know what the hell happened in the writing room for that one. All of the shitting done on the 87 turtles felt extremely out of place. They suddenly didn't know how to use their weapons even though they used them just fine in the last crossover. Also they repeatedly got their butts kicked big time by 2012 Bebop and Rocksteady and never got the chance to even the score. It was a cringy mess ultimately despite some rather great moments between 87 Shredder and Krang and 2012 Bebop and Rocksteady. It royally pisses me off that the most iconic, most successful and most culturally relevant version of TMNT gets treated like cowardly, pushover bitches who couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. More than once now! I mean, how much more inaccurate bullshit have we fans who grew up with the 1987 turtles have to take?!

    • @chrisdelgado4621
      @chrisdelgado4621 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dibdab Firstly, 2012 Bebop & Rocksteady were established from the start as being far more competent than their 87 counterparts, which the 87 turtles obviously weren’t expecting, and even the 2012 turtles often struggled against them, so it makes sense that the 87 series wouldn’t fare as well against them as the ones they were used to battling. Secondly, I really hate to have to tell you this, but the 87 series is not this flawless masterpiece that your nostalgia goggles have fooled you into thinking it is. Sure, it may be the most popular incarnation, but it was also an incredibly dumb, poorly written mess that changed so much from the comics to the point where the spirit of the source material was completely lost. The only thing about it that really holds up nowadays is the theme song and the voice acting.

      Even if that was the case, it really soured what could have been a GREAT crossover for Turtles Forever. Instead of it being fun and enjoyable, it felt more like the producers of the 03 series going 'NUH UH! OUR SERIES IS BETTER! ALL YOU 80S FANS SUCK!' which in essence showed them playing the same whining game as the fans who whined about the 03 series. Personally, I LOVED the comics but didn't really care for the 03 series NOT because it wasn't like the comics or the 80s series I grew up with but because it was just another product of that era where cartoons TRIED to be darker and edgier when in reality, it was the same stuff....just with scowls and a supposed darker tone. Not to say that the series is awful, it's not, but to say it was flawless is kind of pushing it, especially after Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers.
      For a 4Kids production that wasn't a bad dub, it's really enjoyable and one of their best (if not the best of the original, though licensed, productions) but Turtles Forever was a waste because it wasn't a crossover; it really was fanfic level of us vs. them with so much put on the 03 series as being superior JUST BECAUSE, while over-hyping that obviously silly elements of the original show to make them seem like they were real an the only turtles people should care about. You don't do that with crossovers. If they wanted to make a slam at the 80s goofiness, it would have just been better to go the route of making an episode where someone clones the turtles and they ARE incompetent because they're clones, not simply because they were from the 80s series.

    One thing I REALLY want to happen is a crossover between the 1987 Turtles, the 2003 Turtles and the 2012 Turtles. Three teams from the three main animated shows. Maybe even Three Splinters at once (Brown, Grey and Black). I wish this would happen, but I feel as though the guys at Nick don't care for the 2003 series that much. I can just imagine the 2003 Turtles in 3D, a fight between the 2 Karais and the return of one of the most bad ass versions of the Shredder.

    The explanation I had for when the 87 Turtles walk out into the streets was because they'd had so many adventures in saving the day and such that at some point, the people of New York actually become very accepting of them.
    This is personal fan theory about it though.

      +sonic8005 I know at the end of season 3 they went out in public and it looked like they may be accepted. I still need to finish watching the rest of it, I keep getting distracted by the 2012 series, or the 2003 series or Daredevil.

    While I really do understand your anger and frustration over the Turtles Forever movie (to have the 87 turtles cry in fear especially was bullshit), I personally really do think you're giving the 1987 show WAAAY too much credit. I grew up with it too and enjoyed it as a kid - but when I tried to rewatch it recently, it was one of the most frustratingly bad shows I've ever seen.
    You're saying some of the stuff in Turtles Forever feels more like a parody of the show than the actual show - but they actually condensed it. They had villains MORE silly than the walking banana monster in the actual show, so I don't really see how that isn't a legit thing to bring up as silly in it.
    But, hey, I'm glad you love and enjoy the 1987 show. And I'm glad this crossover is better than Turtles Forever. :)

    • @phelous
      @phelous  8 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I know the show had dumb moments, I made a list talking about all the stupid things that happening in 87. But you don't just focus on the low points of a show for a crossover like this. Like I mentioned in this video there is plenty to shit on in 2003 as well and that wouldn't have been fair to that show either.

      +Phelan “Phelous” Porteous
      Agreed, it should always be pros and cons, you don't want to ass kiss one side over the other anymore then take a giant shit on one side over the other, it ends up making both look bad as one is unbelievibly glorified and the other looks weak, just for character credibility alone that's a major writing no no, glad to see the 2012 show knew better

    • @FNGLHR
      @FNGLHR 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ColeVecsion Same here, any crossover like this should celebrate both series, warts and all. Acknowledging goofs is a part of it, not dismissing the positives is another equally important part. If you combine two teams, whether from different worlds, books, series or whatever, you should do what you can to properly showcase what makes both series or franchises great. Team ups should be team ups, and everyone should get a chance to shine.

    • @kurvos

    let's all agree that 4Kids ruins a lot of things, anime, good crossovers, theme songs. i won't argue that you may have been right that the writers behind turtles forever did a mean spirited parody of the 87 tutrles, but at least the 2003 had nice nods to them.
    also the expressions you mentioned that the 87 turtles give when in 3D kinda, i almost thought you were gonna do the "Heeeyeeeeee" line from the old man in your Beauty and the Beast review

    Now I think I know why they don't do the trench coat bit anymore is mainly due to bad cultural implications with trench coats. That the clothing has now of days.
    Hell this was even a problem with Jhonen Vazquez the creator of Invader Zim. The Nickelodeon studio really wanted him to redesign Dib just because the character wore a trench coat.
    That's because Nick said and I quote. "He looks like the Columbine shooters."
    Which is something people still think about people when they see Trench Coats.
    My own kid brother got in serious trouble for wearing one at his High School, when it was winter. The world just doesn't like Trench Coats.
