Grumpton finally calls me out of the blue but I just know he's after something. After a shocking revelation we tentatively agree to meet up but where we meet might be up to you.
Finally, I manage to get my grubby mitts on that medium format Hasselblad camera that Amanda has somehow procured but perhaps these rainy conditions are not ideal for such an expensive rig.
Deleting some of your best images either deliberately or accidentally is something you're going to want to avoid doing. But if you do, all is not lost.
I share with you how I recover images even if I did deliberately delete them just to trick my way into using my wife's camera. But I'm not the only one being tricked as Amanda demands breakfast in bed.
Not even a suspected leg fracture stops me from getting the shot but can that Hasselblad withstand the rain? Who will Grumpton bring on our road trip and what did Thomas Heaton do in that pub?
There's really only one way to find out.

Best Book Ever Written? www.fototripper.com/chasing-awe-landscape-photography-book-gavin-hardcastle/
Can’t wait to see you and Adam together. “His Royal Sourness”, that was on a different level 😂
Amanda: "I don't think I have one." Gavin (deadpanned): "You have two." 🤣
If you head south-east from Nova Scotia on your way to Colorado, you will find the glorious photo location of New Zealand, which has stunning mountains, waterfalls, forests and coastlines. I highly recommend it.
I'd forgotten how much I enjoy the by-play between Gav and Grump until I saw the first two and a half minutes of this.
Back together with Adam Gibbs. There's something to look forward to. You two are great together.
The chemistry between Gavin and Grumps deserves a dedicated sit com with some 10 seasons of it :D
Can’t wait to see you & Grumpton back together
The Badlands , Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, The Devil's Tower, and Deadwood in South Dakota. Oh and Wall Drug.
Colorado: Ouray/Silverton areas for wildflowers, craggy mountains and waterfalls. Animas Forks for mining ghost towns, wildflowers and high mountain vistas. Keebler Pass near Crested Butte for wildflowers, high rolling mountains covered in aspens and bubbling steams. Ridgeway and Telluride area for high craggy mountains, highland lakes, waterfalls and flowers. Dominguez Canyon area for the look and feel of the desert southwest. Grand Mesa (world's largest flat top mountain) near Coalbran for large alpine meadows, wildflowers, lakes and small streams.
Oh yeah, I think there's a meet up of the F4 boys coming soon. There's been banter between Heaton and now Uncle Grumpy. Is Nick Page next to make an appearance or to be mentioned? Something is cooking, all these little name drops between you all is going somewhere, I am sure of it. Or I might be reading into it. Or maybe just hopeful? Nice waterfall photographs. As always, enjoy your content. It's a guaranteed laugh with a side of learning.
The wildflowers near Crested Butte or in American Basin, Colorado are going to be spectacular this summer. Heavy snow pack this past winter so they'll be blooming late.
"His royal sourness" 🤣👌
Hardcastle and Gibbs confirmed 👌 😅
South Dakota is absolutely gorgeous, especially the Badlands. It looks like a different planet. I was just there with my mother-in-law in May.
I love watching Amanda contorting her lip at the leg injury exaggeration…
I’m so used to that look from my own gorgeous missus… universal.
Great content GH. My favourite photography channel always delivers.
No exaga
@@fototripper well I hope you get better soon and the keto aids in your your recovery.
When is the next Hardcastle Towers vid? Seeing Grumpton back in your vids is always an awesome cameo. Looking forward to that too.
Also, I'd recommend a stop at the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Beautiful landscape, challenging to shoot well.
So happy to see Uncle Grumpy come back!
Love that waterfall shot! Good stuff. As for US spots, the north shore in Minnesota is quite nice. Tettegouche state park is a popular stop but there's hidden waterfalls all up and down that road if you do some research. Lost Creek falls and Sugarbush natural area in Wisconsin are a couple of my favorites in the region too. If you aren't that far north, consider Cuyahoga in Ohio or Garden of the Gods in southern Illinois. And if you do make it to Colorado consider a get-together, I'd love to buy you a beer!
Last time you tested a medium format I was so impressed that I bought it...and told Fuji that they should have given one to you, they're not taking the hint! Amazing bit of kit, got some cracking shots of the sun setting at Thornwick Bay over the weekend. So compare away if you must but I can't afford the Hassy even if it is better, budget blown for many moons. See if the focus stack function is easier to figure than the Fujifilm or maybe that's just me and I need to read the instructions again. Thanks for the inspiration and good humour from you both.
If you come across Canada and dip into the US at Michigan's upper peninsula, and then head down the west side of the state you pick up?
- Tahquamenon falls
- Pictured Rocks
- Sleeping Bear Dunes
- Lighthouses all the way down the coast with great sunsets.
- No tides, the water doesn't taste bad, but it's still cold.
Nothing is going to save you from having to cross the plains states. Though if you time it right, you might be able to get some good storm shots.
Thanks for bringing some laughter into my Monday am... once again brilliant content love you both!!
LMFAO during that opener! A good dose of laughter indeed! Keep ‘em coming!
I don’t know what you are looking for, but I live in an area of Colorado that has everything. From 14er mountains, Wild West deserts, sand dunes, endless forests, rough canyons, and everything in between. Like a gala diner where you can cherry pick a new location every day. I would love to show you around.
From Canada facing America head East. Keep going and you will see the amazing Glass House Mountains that Captain Cook, praised as the most beautiful!
Very nice Gavin. Beautiful waterfall shot. Hope the leg heals quick. 😊
Ill check out the Recoverit.
I didn’t see where anyone mentioned the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate NY. Beautiful areas with lots of trails up small (and large) mountains.
If you Dr ide to go this way - let me know and I’ll work to get some time free to show you around.
Sorry - if you do drive this way…
I see mentions of South Dakota Badlands, which are quite interesting, but I'd recommend Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Medora North Dakota. They're called the ND Badlands but are quite different and in my opinion offer a lot more landscape variations. In the North Unit, there is an area that has some natural "balls" being exposed in a cliffside setting. So much more than just that. There are 2 units. The South is right in Medora, and the North Unit is about 70 miles North, but good Hiway. Also there is Painted Canyon, which can be accessed via the Painted Canyon Visitor Center right off Interstate 94.
Definitely would like to see a comparison video, considering I’m a Fuji fan ! Great video as well 👍
I really love the Badlands in South Dakota. Wildlife photography is a bonus there. It has a very lunar landscape look to it. Great video.
Having just bought a 100s, I am somewhat curious about the comparison and a large part of the hass/fuji decision was the cost of lenses. Therefore, for me I would love to see a comparison between differences in system usability/practicality of shooting as well as significant differences between similar lenses and how they might effect the end product.-shot.
Finger Lakes Region in Upstate NY. Particularly southern Cayuga and Seneca Lakes. Beautiful waterfalls!
Another sponsor! Great! Glad you are making some money on this.
Ha ha ha, that was a funny exchange with Grumpacious AKA Adam Gibbs.
Yes please on the Fuji vs Hasselblad!
I liked the waterfalls shots with the log. That log bothered a lot of folks but I rather thought it added interest to the shot😎👍
If you are not in a hurry going through Maine Mosher Hill Falls in Farmington, Maine. With all the recent rainit has become a beautiful waterfall versus the scant flows seen often on the web.
A bit further west is Utah. So many choices.
I lost my first day of shooting at Bryce Canyon several years ago. I slipped on new snow over ice on a downhill. Crampons had broken. I fractured three vertebrae. Anyway, I got the pics on my laptop. Then with the pain and pain meds, I managed to delete them. Was never able to recover them.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Ausable River
River in New York State
The river is located in Lake, Placid, New York. The landscape open down the river, which I believe is about 93 miles long has amazing boulder, formation, and cascades and waterfalls. It is definitely a stop if you’re coming from Nova Scotia you will be driving right through that area.
Hi,
Did you consider moving the large processed timber from the bottom pool? I think it would have made the shot better, if you did consider it, what was the reason for leaving it in.
Thanks
Agreed get back there and get to it Amanda can film it
You'll have to watch again where I explained my leg fracture.
Colorado: Boulder area; South Dakota: the Black Hills and the Badlands; Hocking Hills south of Columbus Ohio is amazing, but that's quite a bit further for Uncle Grumpy to travel. I think South Dakota will be your best bet.
Great video and some wonderful pictures. Always interesting to see some of Amanda's reactions to some of your thoughts. Upper Michigan (the UP) has some pretty cool places. Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Area State Park with Lake of the Clouds, the Presque Isle River and Union River can make for some great photography. And all along the shores of Lake Superior. Munising area and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore can be great. Lots of remote and beautiful small lakes in the Hiawatha National Forest.
I would love to see your images from Badlands National Park, and the Needle's area of the central Black Hills of South Dakota. The waterfall photos are incredible !!!!!
Would love to see what you and Adam could come up with shooting in either Yellowstone or Glacier National Parks!
Absolutely love love love your videos both for the quality photography skills and the hilarious humour you and Amanda seem to produce without any hassel blad 🤣
Hi Amanda and Gavin, I'd love to see a Fuji GFX vs Hasselblad. I'm a GFX user but there is no denying how beautiful the Hasselblad form is, the colour science looks great on the Hassy, leaf shutter lenses for extra grunt with strobes. Love that camera, but the Fuji is definitely more in my price range. Have you mentioned what lenses you are using? Amanda you need to personalise your camera with a few unicorn stickers.
I will do.
Would love to see a Fuji 100s vs Hasselblad video! Some of the biggest questions I'd have is on IBIS, weather sealing, DOF for the medium formats, and lens choices for long focal lengths. You didn't seem to have a problem with DOF at f/11 but I always thought it's more narrow for medium format hence why you may need f/16 to get the same DOF as f/11 on full frame.
Hi! Dude, you need to send her shoe shopping then tell her you’ll watch her camera while she’s gone. Don’t know your exact route but if you go by Cleveland Ohio there is a place called Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It has around a hundred waterfalls. I haven’t been there yet. There might be some shots along the Lake Erie coastline as well. As for the rest of the state there are smaller venues but not much. Thanks for the video.
more or less anywhere in the rockies is awesome but i must admit in colorado areas around North Cheyenne Cañon Park is pretty neat and areas around woodland park
LOL you always killl me maaannnn!! Ill be in LA in a couple of weeks. Hope to do a vid with you someday!
@4;43 you couldn't stop a pig down an ally 😂🤣
Hope the leg feels better soon. .
Great photos 2x👍
If you venture to Utah, you have to stop in the area/drive around Chimney Rock and Ghost Rock Viewpoint. Basically between Green River Utah and Salina Utah. You'll never see a more beautiful slice of road.
I highly recommend coming down the Maine Coast, places like Acadia NP, Mid-coast (Pemaquid) and down to Ogunquit. Also the White Mountians, especially if it's in the fall and lots of great waterfalls. I'm a landscape photographer in southern NH so happy to help you with ideas if you stop in New England. 😊
Love your 1980s moped rocker faux leather jacket
Great video as usual Gavin, I think the diet is paying off. It would be great to have a night photography comparisson of both cameras and if possible with the use of a tracking device.
Compare the noise and sharpening between the GFX and Hasselblad, please. :-). When is Amanda coming out with a book? I'm sure it would be amazing!
😂 another fab video ! I would be very interested to a comparison between this and the Fujifilm, as a Fujifilm user myself it would be interesting to see the differences in the optics of the two systems and the ergonomics. Sounds to me like you’re definitely going to have to get the grumpinator on the channel again. 😊
I’m considering drawing a portrait of Grumpton in the tent begging for shyt tickets 😂 seeing his face again is really inspiring me
Great video! Awesome shot with Amanda’s Camera 🙌
I also recommend the South Dakota Badlands NP, and the Black Hills while you are there. There is a wonderful boondocking area just outside the west entrance to the badlands.
Of course, anywhere in southwest Colorado (San Juan Mtns) is great any time of year, especially the fall.
I don’t k is what you are looking for, but I live in an area of Colorado that has everything. From mountains, Wild West deserts, sand dunes, endless forests, rough canyons, and everything in between. Like a gala diner where you can cherry pick a new location every day. I would love to show you around.
Accidentally deleting your photos is better than accidentally not taking them in the first place, like I did yesterday when I tried taking some aerial photos from my kite but forgot to turn on the camera. Doh!
Sweeeeet photos and it’s sooooooooo awesome to see you and His Royal Sourness together again.
Depending on how far south you and Amanda travel on your journey. Here are some spots in the USA between Nova Scotia and Colorado. Some are iconic so you might be bored but still lovely.
1. Acadia National Park (Boulder beach, the lighthouse, Cadillac Mtn.)
2. Franconia Ridge Trail NH (steep hike in white mountains)
3. Delaware Water Gap ( the summit point of the trail on New Jersey side)
4. Ricketts Glen State Park (20+ waterfalls on one hike, many of them photogenic when some water flowing) PA
5. Cuyahoga National Park in Ohio
6. Sand Dunes National Park in Indiana
7. Kansas Badlands
8. Colorado Springs
9. Colorado Corn Country
If you take northerly route
10. Pictured rocks National seashore Michigan
Enjoy
#4 is highly underrated and a must for waterfall enthusiasts, but there are hundreds of awesome falls in PA
I’m so excited you went to Rickets Glenn!!! I’m headed there as I drive back home from California and you confirmed the water! So much better then the drought conditions I had last year.
Black Hills, SD. Should be a decent challenge.
Very interested in a comparison video for the Hasselblad and Fuji.
Not sure if you’ll make it to NC on your trip, but I think you’d love Crabtree Falls off the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The Badlands in South Dakota would give you a variety of subjects.
"Sloth with hemorrhoids", so funny. Nice images. The badlands of South Dakota are beautiful as are the Black Hills. I don't have a specific spot. Just watch out for bison! One as big as my car was stopped on the US highway in the Black Hills. You might have some fun at "Wall Drug" too. "Devils Tower" outside of Sundance, Wy. is beautiful.
You were walking down that slope like you were enduring a constant shartfest! Probably that new diet of yours, which clearly isn’t working if you’re still falling out of loft hatches. Unless that’s just because you’re getting old. Like many others, I was itching to get that big log out of the shot - but I bet it would have weighed an absolute ton, and then there’s the argument about leaving nature as you find it of course. Enjoyed the shots and the video, thanks.
I always wanted to make a bent acrylic glass shield which attaches to the hot shoe to keep the rain off. Something L-shaped with lips.
acrylic is heavy, how about a flexible light material like Brents breakfast dish?
LoL so many mentions of Badlands Nat'l Park😁. The night sky there is phenomenal but scouting out compelling comps are challenging especially in the dark, nice sunsets but predawn/sunrise there is best IMO. If you go, watch out for rattlesnakes and park rangers!
I'd find it interesting for the comparison even though i'll never be in the market for either camera, It's good to watch a master at work lol. These video's are making me think a lot more about compositions etc rather than snapping away then being dissapointed later on. Amanda thought you were telling a fib-ula about your Fibula. My copy of Chasing Awe with Gavin Hardcastle doesn't work so well as a rain cover, maybe It's due to it being the downloaded version
My advice?
On your drive, discover the Flint Hills near Matfield Green, KS and the Gypsum Hills west of Medicine Lodge, KS. Spring or fall are the best times to be there. You won’t believe you’re in Kansas. Also, don’t stop in CO and drive just a bit further to Monument Valley, AZ & Utah. Extraordinary all!!!
Yes, I would like to see a comp review of the GFX 100s and Hasselblad. I have the former and along with several GFX lenses, I’m using a number of my old, like new Pentax 67 lenses with great Success!
Looks like a great return spot for sure !! Was there much “hassle” with the file size and blending ?
Im very curoous how this compars to the gfx100s. I have the gfx100s and it is awesome for landscapes, cars and most items. But I am curious how is does with skin tones. I find the fuji a little too contrasty for my portrait likes and I don't shoot my kids with it and wont take on couple or weddings as such. It also glitched on me a few times so I'm thinking of getting out of it before it craps out.
Easy - Withby and the F & C's are always great 😀
The Minnesota side of Lake Superior is lined with waterfalls and a few lighthouses. Depends on what you are looking for. After you get south of Duluth there isn't anything to see until you hit Colorado. I would recommend the Black Hills in South Dakota, though.
Black Hills looks awesome.
Don’t know where you are planning to drop into the states, but if you drop in below Montreal, there are the Adirondacks, where I live. If near the Great Lakes, go across I-90 and stop in several National Parks, and the Black Hills of SD.
Try Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Both north and south. Truly hidden gems!
White Mountains in New Hampshire, Finger Lakes region in NY, North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota, Driftless Region in MN/IA/WI, Badlands/Black Hills in So. Dakota, and the Bighorn Mts in Wyoming. All are great areas and haven't been vlogged by any of the "big" photography TH-camrs to my knowledge. (NOT a comment on your girth😅)
I received my copy of your book last week. It’s excellent 📷👍🏼
Thanks a lot Michael.
What lense is on the sony when you coverd it with the book?
Really hope you make it to Colorado. It's a beautiful state.
Picture rock in Michigan, Glacier National Park in Montana is awesome
Really nice waterfall shot. Please get Amanda an umbrella! Rocky Mountain National Park is wonderful!
The coast of Maine is absolutely beautiful and right on the way to points West. Acadia National Park is wicked awesome anytime of the year.
it would be awesome to see you and Adam together again
Have you thought about a stop in Badlands National Park in South Dakota?
The fibula is a long bone in the lower extremity that is positioned on the lateral side of the tibia. The fibula is much smaller and thinner than the tibia
I love shooting with the GFX100S, would be cool to see that comparison video!
Rickettsial Glenn , PA, Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, Benezette PA for the Elk in September, Conowingo Damn MD for the Bald Eagles, Hocking Hills Ohio for rock formations and Waterfalls, Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge in Delaware for beautiful sunrise and wildlife
Conowingo for sure best time seems to be mid Nov to end of Dec first part of Jan.
I don't stop shooting because of rain, no matter how heavy. I use a rain jacket/hood over the camera. You could even go with a somewhat cheap underwater pouch or more expensive housing. In a pinch a plastic bag with some rubber bands or tape will protect the camera just fine.
But not as glamorous.
It wasn't glamorous seeing you hold your beautiful book over a camera to keep the rain off. It was downright painful to watch! I almost got teary-eyed seeing the pages go soggy.
I was a glamour photographer for over 20 years (did a good bit of landscape photography too.) and a bit of plastic over the camera didn't bother me. (I was too busy making sure hair, makeup, wardrobe, lighting, background, making sure the model looked natural and not stiff and a million other things.) A little practice using protection (and you do use protection in other things don't you?) a rain jacket won't slow you down.
I could suggest Riding Mountain National Park in western Manitoba. It's a great, hilly landscape with plenty of bison, moose, and bear.
There's also Rushing River/Eagle-Dogtooth Provincial Parks just east of Kenora, ON near Lake of the Woods.
Thank you for the video!
As entertaining as ever. No dastardly didacticism. No deep mindfulness overload. Just fun ! For certain, between you and Grumpton, please do give us, still here in West Yorkshire, a landscape shooters low-down on the X2D files v GFX output. Hasselblad proclaim all sorts of virtue for their 'Natural colour Solutions' but I wonder if there is any substance to the hype when the RAW files from each camera are chucked into LR and whether there is actually any IQ gain at all for the extra Hasselblad outlay.
Vail, Colorado btw has some majestic mountains, should you be in that part of Colorado.
You should try the Canon 5DS 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽. Nice video bud.
I feel like Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota doesn’t get near enough love. There are some beautiful badlands landscapes there and lots of wildlife
If you go anticlockwise to Colorado there are some nice places in Yorkshire, England. I am sure Thomas Heaton would be able to show you some places.
Comparing that Hasselblad camera to anything is a waste of time for probably 90% of your viewers. I love your channel despite your hawking of equipment that I'll never lay eyes on let alone own. As someone else said, forget the Hasselblad, it's pepperoni time!
