So many people want to denounce social media and dwindling attention spans, label them as simply "bad", and move on, but not many people take the time to understand why technological addiction occurs in the first place and have a more empathetic and understanding conversation. Thank you for not just attaching some sort of immorality to being disconnected and telling people to touch grass, because the amount of takes I've seen that only go that deep into the issue should actually be studied. Just realized another byproduct of a lack of connection/interaction: less empathy.

For the reason why, look at his videos page. The first videos are just like simple recordings of a powerpoint presentation and stuff, something a random person would upload to show their friends or something. Only the last four videos including this one are polished mini docs. So basically ignore everything but the last four videos, and you are looking at a channel 3 months old with only four videos but it has 5k subs. Its gaining followers fast. I suspect 4 months ago he had very few subs, probably under 500, maybe under 100. If he keeps producing videos at about 1 per month for the next year he will probably have like 100K or something.
id disagree with the idea that this is a NEW market, this kind of thing has existed for decades in television. It would be very common for people to have the tv just on in the background while doing other things during the mid-late 20th century. Though this phenomenon is interesting, it is really just showing how the internet is adapting to different desires, not new desires. Also yes, the lonliness thing is absolutely making this worse, it is WAY easier to live one's life alone than ever before. But I'd hesitate before claiming this is a brand new thing. I personally think this is a thing society has been slowly moving towards for quite a long time.
Something that took me a while to realise is that all of this constant consumption - from scrolling through short form content the moment we wake up, to listening to a TH-cam video or a podcast when we fall asleep - never allows us time alone to process our thoughts and feelings. We spend all this time distracting ourselves and keeping our senses occupied, so the moment we get a minute of silence we feel uncomfortable. It’s why lots of people have trouble falling asleep - your brain NEEDS to process everything you’ve experienced recently, but you’ve spent all day keeping it busy with other things that the only time it gets is right before you go to bed. If you’re reading this, please remember to take short breaks throughout the day. Not to scroll mindlessly or even read a book or play sudoku. Just sit and force yourself to be comfortable with your own company. It’s hard, but it’s worth it 🩷
I have watched the four hour icarly video essay multiple times. it is one of my favorite videos to watch while drawing, gaming, etc. and I just want someones voice to be white noise in the background; that video is perfect because its just long enough that I cant memorize *all* of it so it becomes boring, but also well made enough that I have favorite bits my brain tunes back in for to appreciate again
"what's up dog city" is gonna be in my regular vocabulary now i can feel it. but this was a genuinely well put together video and i think you made great points, not a lot of people talk about the links between the boom in streaming and loneliness so this was really interesting. everyone knows what loneliness is but im not sure a lot of people realize what it feels like anymore since its been so ingrained into culture now. i do miss being able to just approach and talk to random people at school or at the park because i thought they seemed cool, because that aspect of society was taken with the pandemic. even if you self identify as an introvert or a homebody human connection is still something that you need to survive, you know?
Honestly this kind of thing doesn't surprise me, reminds me of when you put on a radio for a pet that will be home alone for the day. Most living things that can communicate with each other generally don't like loneliness
I think it’s a similar kind of role that Radio and TV has traditionally played. I could never understand why my friends would have a TV or radio playing in the background and I realise now that it is definitely a tool to service our inherent social nature to feel like we’re around people. It’s a mental health thing.
As someone who live-streamed for a living for multiple years, this is so incredibly accurate, and almost uncomfortable to hear out loud. I switched to doing content only because of the Truman-like feeling it gave for the longest time. I understand the need for connection from many, but I don’t like people treating me like a friend (or worse, some kind of enemy) when they simply don’t know me. Sure, some viewers are above and beyond and will become your friend. Heck, I met my fiancé from streaming. However, I now prefer to simply create content because it feels more nostalgic and real. My content is now more lengthy, honest, and less “scream at you in the intro.” It feels good, and I hope - while I know it won’t happen - we slowly start leaning away from streaming, and more into real life… even if that somehow puts me out of a job.
I’m so glad I could find someone to date who has a similar mindset when experiencing media, when we get home, we sit down and watch new episodes of a show we like. We put our phones on the coffee table and just lay down watching it together snuggled in some blankets on the couch while making our own commentaries over it. We’ve even debated recording our commentaries and making our own fan dubs of shows we like. Maybe it’s just because we place a lot of emphasis on information but I’m just glad I can experience media in a similar way with someone else.
this is pretty interesting. NRK, the norwegian broadcaster, had a few "slow tv"-programmes. The coastal ferry, minute by minute. The train, minute by minute. The clock, minute by minute. It's worth looking up as there is next to no commentary - just a train journey
This was not ambient, this was engaging, But seriously as a TH-camr myself this is something I think about a lot with my audience so its cool to see it explored in a video as high quality as yours.
i agree with all of these points in the broad strokes but i think "go outside" is a bit of a simplistic answer. as someone with social anxiety, the internet has been really helpful in making friends and building close relationships. i think it's better to start with time management - spend your time online watching things you DO want to engage with and share with others, not things you'd rather play in the background. (and you should absolutely go outside sometimes and make irl connections, but the video already talked about that)

It was also much easier to tune into someones stream because I was tuning in for that streamer rather than whatever clickbaity title and thumbnail a creator had. Really cool video!

The short attention spans of people today isn’t talked about enough, great video man (fyi you’re not missing much with Citizen Kane. This is coming from a film student, it’s only cool if you appreciate the filmmaking process)
Good video. Paul cuts right to the truth of the matter. Netflix would never allow content like this on their platform. It's too simple and cheaply made. Netflix hates simple truths. It can't compete with a simple truth. I strongly agree with the idea that the internet is basically a third space. The internet is like a coffee shop where you go to sit with strangers. That arms length distance is a human sweet spot. Not to far, not to close. Nothing really ever changes because nothing is really ever new.
I didn’t think of it at the time of watching that video about wasting time but trying not to waste any time sometime takes a lot of effort (and maybe even time ironically).

8:46 lol it’s Dr.Jenner from The Walking Dead
8:17 my thoughts are way too loud and prominent unless I’m really into the song

Its so weird that you gave the Sips_ example, because that was my exact experience when he moved over to streaming full time
I did not expect to see the yogs, redacted and sips to make an appearance in this video
Also really good job the 30 hours you spent making this weren’t a waste
this video gas me really thinking. good work :)
Sips mentioned and by extension Northernlion probably also mentioned
720p in 2024 is criminal
beautiful
For me it's many videos and gameplay sessions a day keep the bad thoughts away. Also I watch videos while playing games, so multitasking!
I didn’t think of it at the time of watching that video about wasting time but trying not to waste any time sometime takes a lot of effort (and maybe even time ironically).
I just watched the truman show and now im getting recommended videos related to the truman show wtf
Very well made video, I'm investing early with a sub.

Idk if it was the content, the hair or the voice! Great video my dude
