i was thinking the same this week. nobody really cares about you as the way you care about yourself. myself ability and what i like. sometimes i did something, but later i realised that i was letting them see the advert when they didn't know it's advert.
Man is finally getting some attraction, I'm so happy! He's so wise, he encouraged me to take a step I never imagined I'd take. I did it without much thought because of him, and now it’s shaping up to be something positive that could turn my life around. I’m truly grateful to him.
“If you’re already established make people remember your name, and if you’re new you have to make people know your name, know who you are, and most importantly what you are” - grand statement
As someone who has been so incredibly focused on trying to garner an audience and you made me realize something that really only applies to art: I don't *need* to draw fanart of things I don't engage in. I don't *need* to engage in trends. I don't *need* to draw for other people. I need to present things I enjoy. I need to present myself consistently. I need to present work I can maintain and present it semi-regularly, even if it isn't brand new and unique. In fact, it's *better* to make inspired work! I don't know how that's what I've come away with, but I'm glad I have. You're awesome for that, even though you probably didn't mean for that to be one of your messages. Hell, maybe I got it all completely back asswards. I'll figure that out in due time, but thank you for giving me something to think about nonetheless. :)
You should draw for others, but the others should be a group you like and respect. Art isn't made in a vacuum. And they don't have to be big group. Like they can be your friends, a small community, your family.
Make things you want to make. I’ve learned in my twenties how much of my time has been spent being performative in most areas of my life, and it doesn’t bring joy like being genuine does. My art most importantly makes me FEEL something and brings joy or other emotions when it’s something I want to make. I feel connected to it and proud of it, and others connect with it as well.

@JapYoga funny, and you're not alone in thinking that way. However, They're one step ahead of you though. Guess who owns all these little sub-brands of things you use and consume every day? Yeah. The big brands. One example: You know who owns RC Cola? Schweppes. You know who owns Schweppes? Dr. pepper. Buy an "off brand soda" like RC cola thinking you're beating the major cola brand? Nah, you're just supporting the other big one.
@JapYoga effective advertising isn't about getting someone to use or buy something, it's about normalizing the use or purchase of something in specific settings.
This video both makes us very aware of the shady business practices used in advertisement, while reminding us that this is what we must do to be seen. It's quite melancholic really.
Love the point about rage-bait that you made, Jonny. I'm surprised that there's not more people who realise that they're being sucked into an endless loop and anger and debate. Or, I suppose that they do realise, but they like the way the anger makes them feel.
I think one nuance is that it is not only familiarity but also reinforcement learning and social proof, the fact a "specific brand" has succes or has given you a good experience in the past creates a bigger probability for a good experience when facing the choice again in the future. Therefore making it the logical choice.
100% this video sent me on a nostalgia trip -looks like it was filmed on an early 2000’s camera (dull😮 colors) - 80’s hair and a headband baby - background sounds are audible - NOT A SINGLE CUT!!!
It stretches so far beyond obvious product/brand advertising too, as you said with advertising YT personalities. The fact that so many people including many of my teachers and peers, close family friends and coworkers, don’t have the mental energy to remember “no publicity is bad publicity” makes me fearful.
Genuinely think ur saving my career w this video I’ve been spiraling the past month I hope this is the start of greatness it’s all up to me tho to follow thru.
Advertising is built entirely on trust. To earn that trust, consistent exposure is essential. Every word, action, and visual a brand shares reflects and shapes its tone of voice.
Makes so much since when I see the cringy adverts that I don’t like. But the advertiser is still getting likes due to what you said. Makes so much since !!
Ur a legend mate. props for not having one cut in this video. You really helped me through my process of creating the campaign that im currently working on.
This is a great video. Its informative, thought provoking, and really interesting. Proves you dont need fancy graphics or audio or click baity tactics to have a good video. This video is great becuase it has a solid message, and you give all the facts and share personal examples that me and a lot of other people can relate to. I will admit i didnt know what i was about to click on when i read the title, but i still enjoyed listening to you talk about advertising a lot
Really great points here, mate! One of the best examples to have a context of advertising is the "pick a number scene" from the movie Focus with Will Smith and Margot Robbie
My strategy for "advertising" is instead of convincing people why they should give you something, or merely just planting a brand into their minds to create familiarity. I use the advertisement to give something without asking anything in return. Then when they end up encountering me in a store for example, they are more inclined to then purchase because i have already given them something. I cant go into detail for me specifically but a simple random example would be using an advert just to make someone laugh.
Note: its not just a strategy to get people to invest. Its genuine. My ethos or however you want to say it that i focus on giving, while thinking about how to make it easy for people to give back. In simple terms.
What’s funny is I opened TH-cam to look up specifically “what has advertising done to us as a society?” And you were the first video I saw when the app loaded in. I was meant to see this video, thank you
i left twitter earlier this year because i realised all it did was make me angry and sometimes i saw tweets that genuinely ruined my day. one day i woke up, saw a nasty tweet that made me upset and decided it was time to leave. one of the best decisions i've made. anyway, i stumbled upon your video today and it made me really happy to find someone talking about something that i think about a lot. it brightened my day. i hope you have a lovely weekend, happy holidays and a great 2025. llap ☆
Some nice and helpful insight here. Being more mindful whenever I see ragebait content has definitely changed my life for the better. It's not like I turned into the most Zen person overnight, but when I'm not rushing into my primal instincts and instead trying to intellectualize what the advertiser's intent is, it makes me think of what I'm capable of as a writer and a creator as well

@@joshuaramirez9088 in all actuality it’s both if not more so the latter. His title, which albeit has some sense to it in the advertising context, Is not all that useful in comparison to everything else he said, and if anything, can throw people off.

@@bobzilla-1 nah, she sees more positives because that's what's getting the most likes = wholesome stuff* => and then a person seeing the most rated comment tries to replicate that climate more or less subconsciously -> and then you have a kind of comment section geist :)

I love conversations like this where no response is needed
You remind me of one of my friends from back in the day who went train hopping with 10 dollars across the US and somehow makes friends and eats well and is invited to stay the night at random people’s houses wherever they go. (Compliment in my mind)
Long live Stobe
10:43 “we all like to talk about stuff that is irritating, because it can be fun… and there are so many fun negative words out there to describe things”, ahahaa, sooo truue
i was thinking the same this week. nobody really cares about you as the way you care about yourself. myself ability and what i like. sometimes i did something, but later i realised that i was letting them see the advert when they didn't know it's advert.
As someone who has been so incredibly focused on trying to garner an audience and you made me realize something that really only applies to art:
I don't *need* to draw fanart of things I don't engage in.
@@CrossbredManiac-vids well said and this is true!!
You should draw for others, but the others should be a group you like and respect. Art isn't made in a vacuum. And they don't have to be big group. Like they can be your friends, a small community, your family.
Hey man, at the end of the day whatever message you take out of the video is entirely your own :)
Make things you want to make. I’ve learned in my twenties how much of my time has been spent being performative in most areas of my life, and it doesn’t bring joy like being genuine does. My art most importantly makes me FEEL something and brings joy or other emotions when it’s something I want to make. I feel connected to it and proud of it, and others connect with it as well.
i draw too i felt this exact way when i got into social media. i always hated how fanart got way more attention than original stuff
Thank YOU!
No, Thank YOU! Wow first super thanks, forgot this was a feature
this video is incredible because i can tell it was one take, one feeling one bloke had and its completely uncut unedited. class
It's like you want yo give a bad video a thumbs down but then your helping the algorithm by interacting.

The Spirit of the old Wild Wild Web is back baby!
This video just cleared a lot a blurry but important thoughts that I had going on in my mind this week, thank you Jonny, you are a genius with the words, your capacity of synthesis it's perfectly fit for youtube content in my opinion, keep up!
8:56 holy crap this bit blew me away. I did know "bad fame is still fame", but this explains why. After the first bad impression the subject is infected and spreads the virus, just not with the actual bad impression part of it, it's freaking genius. And horrendous too.
Vintage TH-cam vibes✨
Man I love the first track in your album, Communications, so so much. Felt the passion in every word that you sang. I just started making music and you have inspired me...Thanks Jonny!
@@mjeeezyy thanks! Very personal song that one, most time I've ever spent on a song that one, and it's not even my fav on the album loool
This video feels like a comfortable conversation in a good way
The only long ad that suddenly popped up that I didn't skip, and it was like a minutes long ad, was a Scientology ad I got only once on TH-cam on a random video. I was so intrigued and impressed by that ad that I watched it all the way through and went on a rabbit hole of researching scientology
I love both the message and vibe of your video. Feels like what old youtube felt like and you completely changed my perspective on self promo
privacy is such a blessing; you can experiment what you want without no one looking being judged.
This a more down-to-earth take on how companies work
this was the best first impression u could’ve had on me and now u just want to sit down and chat with you that was so beautiful. so clearly spoken and just generally good conversation and thought. thank you johnny!!!
Presley's own promoter Parker knew that "bad publicity" was still publicity back in the 1950s when he had "I Hate Elvis" badges made as part of his merchandise range!
This explained very well why people tend to like celebrities more and I’ve been on and on thinking about it, but it’s just because they’re used to them every time they open their phone they end up
Seeing something of that “celebrity “ . Thanks mate that was a good thought process .
When i say celebrity I don’t mean actual celebrities but people with some what big following in platforms like tiktok instagram and TH-cam
@3:55 an example of the mere exposure effect - the more familiar you are with something, the more likely you are to have a positive opinion of it
As a artist who is constantly surrounded by bots ur channel is a godsend
0:42 I always do the opposite. I always choose a brand that I don't know. I never buy the most advertised because advertisements are annoying.
@JapYoga exactly
Monitory
@JapYoga what happens when they owned by the same company 😂
The algorithm has gifted me with this incredible video
Love the way you chose to get your message out, you did it your way. Perfect explanations, no wasted words. Great.
I thought this was basic knowledge, but I won’t lie-the aesthetic of this video is quite appealing
Love the point about rage-bait that you made, Jonny. I'm surprised that there's not more people who realise that they're being sucked into an endless loop and anger and debate. Or, I suppose that they do realise, but they like the way the anger makes them feel.
Despite me not being engaged into social media content at all I enjoyed your understanding of ads.
I think one nuance is that it is not only familiarity but also reinforcement learning and social proof, the fact a "specific brand" has succes or has given you a good experience in the past creates a bigger probability for a good experience when facing the choice again in the future. Therefore making it the logical choice.
100% this video sent me on a nostalgia trip
-looks like it was filmed on an early 2000’s camera (dull😮 colors)
- 80’s hair and a headband baby
- background sounds are audible
- NOT A SINGLE CUT!!!
Havent watched the video yet, its going in the watch later, but just by the thumbnail i was instantly impressed
Crazy how brands do mind games instead of creating a genuine products
Seeing this video is almost spiritual! it's like a present day nostalgia. This is how things should be.
I feel like I'm high in front of my existential friend and I'm just nodding along and trippin'
It stretches so far beyond obvious product/brand advertising too, as you said with advertising YT personalities. The fact that so many people including many of my teachers and peers, close family friends and coworkers, don’t have the mental energy to remember “no publicity is bad publicity” makes me fearful.
The part about dating was somehow unironically useful
Genuinely think ur saving my career w this video I’ve been spiraling the past month I hope this is the start of greatness it’s all up to me tho to follow thru.

Advertising is built entirely on trust. To earn that trust, consistent exposure is essential. Every word, action, and visual a brand shares reflects and shapes its tone of voice.
17 fantastic minutes. Love TH-cam recommending these kinds of videos man keep it up
Makes so much since when I see the cringy adverts that I don’t like. But the advertiser is still getting likes due to what you said. Makes so much since !!
implementing what hes talking about into the video was genius

Great documentary from 1976! It's crazy how people back then already struggled with the things we do nowadays.
loving the retro picture aesthetic
Ur a legend mate. props for not having one cut in this video. You really helped me through my process of creating the campaign that im currently working on.
That back of the hand calculation in the last minute is genius.
All fucking videos shot in Britain should be in this shot, everything about it is perfect the lighting filter whatever, love the square also
This is a great video.
You will certainly be remembered Jonny, have a splendid new year!
Really great points here, mate! One of the best examples to have a context of advertising is the "pick a number scene" from the movie Focus with Will Smith and Margot Robbie
This is the content I come to TH-cam for. Subbed! Love it man and your articulation and ability to convey ideas is amazing! Thank you!
Not the ads popping up on this video to confirm what he’s saying about the ads
@@clintonebioma4928 I love when that happens
@clintonebioma4928 adblocker & youtube revanced, my friend. Never see an ad again
What’s funny is I opened TH-cam to look up specifically “what has advertising done to us as a society?” And you were the first video I saw when the app loaded in. I was meant to see this video, thank you
Just finished the video, you said exactly what I had been thinking. thank you again
i left twitter earlier this year because i realised all it did was make me angry and sometimes i saw tweets that genuinely ruined my day. one day i woke up, saw a nasty tweet that made me upset and decided it was time to leave. one of the best decisions i've made.
anyway, i stumbled upon your video today and it made me really happy to find someone talking about something that i think about a lot. it brightened my day. i hope you have a lovely weekend, happy holidays and a great 2025. llap ☆
That is the struggle I have, I want to stay informed but what I'm reading and seeing infuriates me.
Some nice and helpful insight here. Being more mindful whenever I see ragebait content has definitely changed my life for the better. It's not like I turned into the most Zen person overnight, but when I'm not rushing into my primal instincts and instead trying to intellectualize what the advertiser's intent is, it makes me think of what I'm capable of as a writer and a creator as well
Thank you George Harrison for making this video
Love the charisma. I didnt even care about the subject at first, but now im thinking about it... good wholesome time getting smarter on youtube. Thans Mozza.

Cool video Jonny, but how does it relate to the title?
That's the neat part,
@@fruitsarian because sometimes nobody knows you until they need to because they hear you everywhere
@@JeromeProductions I'm still confused about what the "advantage" is. Is the "advantage" perhaps just knowing what direction to go in order to be known, like a "knowing where you are helps you know where to go" situation? Or is the title just a strategic earworm that gets people to interact, so that this ends up being his advertisement?
@@joshuaramirez9088 in all actuality it’s both if not more so the latter. His title, which albeit has some sense to it in the advertising context, Is not all that useful in comparison to everything else he said, and if anything, can throw people off.
