  • Make Rusty Bolts Like New | EASY
This is the first time I used this tumbler. It cleans off dirt, rust and other debris. This is a more economical route than buying stainless or titanium bolts. The tumbler and medium can be found at Harbor Freight Tools.

Ah, the classic "spray paint my bolts, then torque them down and strip the paint off later" technique!

@Michael Sabo I just blue them after they come out. I got a junk toaster over just pop them in there up to 300-500 degree's bring them out and drop them in some oil and poof black or "Blueing" it slows down the rust!! I tried clear coat but you just knock it off when you use a wrench on it. I also have a second tumbler with polishing compound so I can make shiny chrome looking bolts like they look at the store. I recycle ever bolt I get now. Also have friends that just throw old bolt and hardware in a bucket for me. it all comes back here and gets polished. the time I spend is prob not worth it but its fun to do I guess. I wish you could still buy the chemicals for the Old Style Of Chroming cuz if I could that's all I would have would be chrome bolts. But its nice when I'm working on a car doing a big job and I can tumble everything overnight and poof clean.
ANYONE WITH A HARBOR FREIGHT OR LOW END TUMBLER NEEDS TO DO THIS!! make your tumbler work even better and most of all FASTER!!

Thanks for sharing. How has it held up? Did you use 1 coat of clear coat?

Good video Michael. Do you ever zinc plate your bolts? I like the shiney oem look.

Nice! I'm definitely going to have to get one of those tumblers. Which one do you have and do you recommend it?

      Here's the one that I have; www.harborfreight.com/5-lb-metal-vibrator-tumbler-67617.html
I can't compare it because it's the only one I've used. But it seems to work well. I've done bolts an small parts with success and I've let it run for like 10 hours straight and it hasn't burnt up.

You should do a zinc plating setup so you can make the hardware look like original again. It would be more work but more durable than paint

If appearance isn't crucial, using zinc galvanized primer works great for fasteners. Not as nice a finish as plating, but -much- faster to apply.

Question...did you add a cup of water to the tumbler to keep the liquidgreen cleaner from becoming pasty?

I agree, plus it looks more like OEM

Hmm, mine looked exactly the same when I left them to soak in white vinegar and a little bit of bleach, put them on the bike, go back to them in 2 months and they're in the exact same state I started to clean them in, so that's why I'm searching for why and how you maintain the condition of them without spraying SPF50 or whatever it's called

Its "easy" if you have the tumbler and medium lol

Title states "EASY" fix for rusty bolts? And I'm sure it is...if you have the hardware and multiple additives to make it easy!! If you haven't then it's not so "EASY".
