  • I recently tied up a couple bucktail flies for our TH-cam channel and a couple people asked about clousers. Here's how you easily turn one of those bucktails into a clouser style fly to cast at coho. The previous video is found here: • Fly Tying the Tofino S...

Thanks. Oh, and my wife says you have a pleasant voice. She usually makes me mute the sound.

I'm just gearing up to start tying flies for salmon on the columbia river. Was wondering what your thoughts were on the tail length and getting short strikes. Do the salmon engulf the clouser style so it's not a concern?

Hi Tom, I use this more for saltwater. But coho will definitely crush this in the rivers too. Short strikes are possible with all streamers and I’ve experimented with both styles. Not sure if I’ve come to any sort of conclusions though I have been fishing more and more single hook clousers.

Do you shorten up your leader when casting a heavier Clouser?

Absolutely. And when fishing clousers I am probably fishing an intermediate or sinking line too and I always use shorter leaders with those. Here's a link to the leader I use. I use the 6' and sometimes chop 12-18 inches off and then add fluorocarbon tippet. I also always tie a loop knot with the clouser. It gives it more action and sinks better too. ghfly.shop/SSLeader
