Im on the other side being a fan of Seagate and had bad luck with wd hdd. Endurance wise I think its worth noting. Ps5 life could be shorter than previous gens. I am hoping when ps6 comes Sony will consider everyone's investment and have these ssds as the min threshold requirement. Based on that hope, the endurance may play its role. Its not just life but ability to perform to its top level for longer. 530 is over double any other offering. Same here. Signed up for the beta about a dozen times over the last month but no invite. Picked up a 2 TB WD SN850 with heatsink about 2 weeks ago now to avoid potential scalping and inflated pricing. I expected Sony to have prioritised users who buy a lot of games (like myself) who would almost certainly have ran out of internal storage as they collect user information while you are using the PS5. But, nope, looks like it is completely random and down to luck. Not everyone testing the beta will bother to install an internal SSD so this really should have been prioritised when selecting people for the beta in my opinion so they can better idea of compatibility and user feedback etc etc.

What no seagulls? Unsubscribed. Only joking lol. You can't go wrong with any of these drives. Its only price and availability that's the deciding factor for the one you go with.
I havent looked into it but have you also tried PCIE 4.0x2 SSDs? Someone just did mention the Series S SSD (which is a x2 PCIE one) and i wondered too… would be a Idea i guess. Wonder what the PS5 would A say or B perform if its possible.
@@marty8370 Yeah i know. Thats why it would be interesting to see what happens. Because i havent seen someone trying it. It shouldnt be possible. As it shouldnt be to use a 4000 MB Drive. But it is possible if it is PCIE 4.0 as it seems.
The fact that the used Samsung was only a 256GB and significantly smaller than the others screwed the result for the Samsung. It is well known that bigger SSD's are faster especially smaller drives are relatively slow in comparison.
Great video. Taking everything into account for the average person and price you can't beat the WD sn850 surprised the sabrent is on this list I'd go gigabyte aorus 7000s over that. I feel like the endurance of the drive for this application is irrelevant.
@@aragorn4242 I disagree but your point is taken. The endurance, hours and TBW of all these drives far exceed what anyone with a PS5 would actually use, it wouldn't even be close.
Agreed. It is clear the PS5 is handling the raw data equally on the backend ie processing it regardless of speed. Outside of price people's biggest concern should be heat. Even then mainly for consistent performance of the drive and how much they are willing to hear the fan increase on the PS5 to keep the external SSD cool.
If people wanted to make there ssd last longer you’d initially download all your games to the m2 ssd and then move the game you’d want to play to the internal ssd and only move it back to the m2 ssd once you’ve finished playing it. I rarely play more than one game at a time.
@@markblow1966 no disrespect as I am not sure what or who you are directing your statement. But by that math or worrying about your m.2 SSD lifespan you should equally worry about the lifespan of your internal PS5 SSD. Console are meant to built at a low cost and eventually further lower their build cost overtime to make money off of them. I highly doubt Sony put a SSD with the most read write endurance especially compared to these higher end drives. SSD these days are meant to last as long as a HDD for average users anyways so no use worrying about it cause we are not running a raid or anything or the like. Just plug and play so long as you met the specs and enjoy.
👏thanks 4 the rundown I dig these real world comparisons. I bought a 2TB 980 Pro for 305 & a 2TB-MX500 for 150. Only Set the mx500 up as I only have last Gen games.. then I finally got a series x (F U scalpers) I have 400+ games so I have been playing on that. SN850 just dropped in price 270 all day-Amazon. I wanted the sn850 originally but $ wasn’t right. I also liked the specs of the Firecuda530. But Seagates pricing decisions for the X/S “storage expansions” over the past year have severely offended me! Their prices r absurd & can’t be justified IMO(But I’m still open to some1 convincing me otherwise lol as I only kno so much about them) if that doesn’t change I will probably Never support Seagate again😠so the 530 is dead to me. w/ that out of the way lol do I friggin return the 980Pro w/the expectation of PCIe4x4 dropping in price as we get closer & closer to the PCIe 5.0 release, keep the 980Pro OR exchange it for the WD SN850@ 270🤔 Now I am prob “slightly” overthinking this lol but I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who cares about the real world 10ths of second differences😁 (but does it matter..😉)
Outside of the topic of endurance, all of those seem close enough to just say, "see which one is cheapest and go with that". Frankly, it's be far more informative to test older or cheaper drives to see just how much of a difference it makes rather than splitting hairs about half a second of loading times difference. Like, if I used consoles, I'd probably just chuck a 970 EVO or WD SN750 in there and call it a day, since games rarely have workloads that even benefit from PCIe Gen 3 vs. Gen 4 sequential speeds.
WARNING!! Been reading bad things about Sabrent's life expectancy. Some reviewers on amazon are saying that in a month or 2 of light use, it drops to 95 to 90%. Some have said that their drive have died, etc.
I had Seagate Firecuda 530 4tb failed after six months and just around 7tb written. It was used in Acasis Thunderbolt enclosure and used from time to time as an external data source. It was replaced and now I put it inside my PC and hope it will not fail. I alsa have Sabrent blue 3.0 with 4tb for almost two years now and have been using in the same way as the failed Firecuda, no problem so far with Sabrent.

@@Dsnipez18 Yes, there is a big difference. The MC1 Pro wont fit unfortunately. It has an integrated heat pipe (not present on MC1) that makes the unit too tall to fit inside the PS5 expansion bay. What do you mean by best "endurance" drive???
It means how long the drive would last to be honest if it's going into the PS5 it's not really something you need to worry about in my opinion not sure why people keep mentioning it for this application. I went with the sn850 good luck have fun gaming.
@@KParks Same here, SN850. And quite frankly, I've owned 3-4 Seagate (hard disk) drives over the years, including a hybrid HDD/SSD drive that I used in my PS4 Pro, that died. I'll never buy Seagate again.
@@eagletrippin I'll never buy a Seagate HDD either they're junk but the SSD might be good idk.. but for the PS5 it's not worth the extra $ plus Ive had good luck with WD
@@eagletrippin I got a PS4 pro 500 million edition and the Seagate 2tb drive crapped out in the 2nd week of owning the console I was pissed.
If it can be used in a ps6 it will still perform as good and beyond your others once wear of ssds happens. I know gen5 ssd is on the cards for next year....so could poop on that theory oh well. Can always swap out into my rig. In the latest ssd pc group test reviews its the best performing now. Why it gets my vote. Enjoy the ps5 chaps.

You cannot compare the samsung 980 pro with the WD SN 850, because strangely the 1 tb version of the samsung is recognized from the console at 5,555 mbps, while the 500 gb version is recognized at 6455 mbps. the problem lies in the beta firmware, because it's really weird.

Are you going to be testing the crucial p5 plus that just dropped?
Was lucky and grabbed a 2tb 530 on newegg 3 days ago. Only had it with no heatsink. Was able to order 2 off Amazon. One says itll arrive by early September the other maybe by October.
wow, are you loaded ?
I got wd black sn850and its the one the guy that makes/tests ps5 recommends so that helps.
Just wondering how long till software 2.0🤔🤔
My WD 850 SN is waiting now for more than a week 😀 no beta access - have to wait for the final update i think
we on the same boat..i am so pissed

In my location, WD Black Sn850 1tb w/o the heatsink cost $245. Samsung 980 pro 1tb w/o heatsink cost $230. We don't have Seagate Firecuda 530, but does firecuda 510 work? . For Sabrent Rocket 4 plus 1tb w/o heatsink cost $236. Let say heatsink let's say $12. Ok.
Firecuda 510 is not gen4
From that list and price go WD sn850 no doubt. Might check out the gigabyte aorus 7000s if it's substantially cheaper that would be a good option. No the Seagate 510 and 520 won't work don't cheap out on the drive to save a few bucks. Get the WD and the gigabyte with the original heatsink if possible if you go that route

hey just a heads up the 1tb 980 pro is getting significantly slower speeds than the other drives. the 500gb and 2tb 980 pro seem to be fine i went with the 580 and it works great
when the ps5 reads the speed of the 1tb 980 pro it's only getting around 5500 mbps whereas the 500gb and 2tb are between 6300 to 6500
can you test with the ssd full at 95 % ? if the speed is same or not
If the SN850 is good enough for Mark Cerney, the man who designed the fucking PS5, its good enough for me

That firecuda stuttering at 15:28, pretty much sealed the wd850 for me
Could it be something else causing the stutter ?

What about the 4Tb versions are those the same speeds?
Sabrent is the only 4tb I believe from another bud he did, but I don’t trust them.
@@AdamSchooler The Firecuda 530 is supposed to have a 4TB version also

It could be that the Samsung 980 has a firmware issue.
It would be interesting to see if an updated 980 performs better with the Ps5.
The fact that the used Samsung was only a 256GB and significantly smaller than the others screwed the result for the Samsung. It is well known that bigger SSD's are faster especially smaller drives are relatively slow in comparison.
I would like to see the temperatures for the ssds tested too
Great video. Taking everything into account for the average person and price you can't beat the WD sn850 surprised the sabrent is on this list I'd go gigabyte aorus 7000s over that. I feel like the endurance of the drive for this application is irrelevant.
endurance is relevant if you game a lot over a long period of time.
Which one holds the most data
So the 980 pro was done with a 250gb? this makes the entire test useless.... use a 1tb or above and try again.
What size are these drives?
Anyone knows how long it will takes before Sony unlock SSD slot for everyone?
Thanks Bro!!
WARNING!! Been reading bad things about Sabrent's life expectancy. Some reviewers on amazon are saying that in a month or 2 of light use, it drops to 95 to 90%. Some have said that their drive have died, etc.
Yeah, i read the same thing! It’s better to be cautious with that choice! Not sure why tho, because the components are top notch
@@Bacnow IT has to do with the tech they used or the way they build the SSD. Like they went for speed first, fuck the lifespan.
@@DjAether8 - lol! Yep! They’re all about on-paper specs (for bragging rights) and don’t give a damn about the end user!!

If I bought the wd black without a heat sink. What's the best heatsink I could buy for it separately that still let's it fit in the ps5? Not sure if there's a winner here
be quiet! MC1 , M.2 SSD COOLER. Great construction and design, thermal pads are pre installed to the heat sink and confirmed to fit. Only issue is it is out of stock. I have one and I think its the best offering on the market that doesn't come with a drive.
@@SuileDearg is there a big difference between the mc1 and mc1 Pro. Like one fits but the other doesn't?
@@Dsnipez18 Yes, there is a big difference. The MC1 Pro wont fit unfortunately. It has an integrated heat pipe (not present on MC1) that makes the unit too tall to fit inside the PS5 expansion bay. You'll have to either wait for a restock or choose one of the alternatives (QIVYNSRY M.2 heatsink 2280 SSD Double-Sided Heat Sink or ineo M.2 heatsink 2280 SSD). Not sure if you've done any research into the PS5 drive itself. I believe I read it was a custom NVME Gen 4 1.3 drive. The highly optimized OS is why the original Gen 4 1.3 drives are meeting the 5500 spec even though they are only rated for 5000. That Samsung Pro is a Gen 4 1.3c and you can't tell the difference between it and the rest of the Gen 4 1.4 drives you have been testing. I wouldn't be surprised after the beta testing period that a lot more drives than Sony initially suggested are actually compatible. I wouldn't rush into purchasing anything for until full public release. Thank you for the time and effort you put into the content for both the NAS and these videos, they have a lot of relevant information.
