The internal PS5 SSD can exceed 9GB/s reads from compressed data. 5.5GB/s raw uncompressed. These expansion SSD's are only going to be as fast as the console allows, and as fast as the games allow. We aren't at the limits of the internal drive yet. The difference in loading times between the internal drive and the expansion drives are so small you could find there same difference between two identical PS5's side by side. The loading of the game itself starts from the PS5's Home Screen until the first title screen of any game.
I mean considering Sony strictly says to keep the ssd plate on I think I’ll do the same. I wouldn’t suggest for people to do what they want when Sony makes it clear what they should do.
PS5's cooling system works on the principle of negative airflow, so having an opening will cause the pressure to fizzle out & the air won't flow properly over the crucial components.
The sabrent heatsink you can buy which replaced the plate. Is dissipating heat above. Completely backwards. Airflow below the plate and heatsink dissipation combined optimises cooling. Comments above spot on.
@@EckoTheFox1 correct. Sony want heatsink to dissipate heat under the plate combined with the airflow that goes underneath the plate. That maximises cooling. Don't add any extra pads; only use what you need. If the M.2 is covered bottom and top with a pad, don't put another pad on top of a pad. It'll only slow heat transfer. The pad is just there to get the heat from the drive to the metal heat sink. Layering pads will only serve to impede this

Agree with all points except that factory made ssd with heat sink is better, these are made in China, with or without heat sink, in the same factory by probably the same group of workers. Save yourself some $50-70 and buy a $10-$15 heat sink and apply yourself, same result.
Internal SSD expansion won't get faster than PS5(your wrong) all data goes thru the PS5 Custom IO( the overhead is already been used just too keep up with PS5 custom SSD

I added the Samsung 980 nvme ssd with a heatsink with silicone bands. I ordered the double sided heatsink you recommended and I will swap it out because I’ve read the silicone bands are not recommended. If I disconnect my ssd to a double sided one it won’t corrupt my downloaded games? Thank you so much for feedback.
Where did you get those black side panels?

@@nascompares I wrote it when started watching, did not think the answer going to be at the end of the video.... -.-' ( lets blame nightshift for screwing up my head)
Mate, Nightshift'ers are f-ing HEROES! No one gets less credit for doing more work... Keep it up buddy
I thought the 980 Pro would have around 6500 read speed on PS5, though I only get 5500ish on my 1TB 980 Pro... :(
I have the 2tb, works great, the speed realy doesnt matter, if you have 5500 youre good to go in my case 5700, when you format the drive again its possible that the speeds are higher. The samsung 980 pro is just a fast as the internal ssd.
It's because it needs the firmware unlocked via the software provided with the drive.
@@seancovell4320 In that case I need an M.2 adapter to update it... Nah it works, and I don't notice any problems.
Dude those plates are sick!

Q: would adding the extra (spare) thermal pad that came with my HeatSink make a marked difference?
I added both the thermal pad and Heatsink on mine(Viper VP4300) and from what I understand it claims to add a few more degrees of cooling
@@XiLock_Alotx my SSD was one sided but I added the thermal padding to both sides in my HeatSink. What I was wondering was…would it help to add another layer to the top of the heatsink as I have an extra thermal pad to aid extra cooling to the controller…
Don't add any extra pads; only use what you need. If the M.2 is covered bottom and top with a pad, don't put another pad on top of a pad. It'll only slow heat transfer. The pad is just there to get the heat from the drive to the metal heat sink. Layering pads will only serve to impede this
@@HankyBalPanky No. Thermal pads should only sadwich the M.2 drive. If it's not touching the M.2 drive, don't use the extra thermal pad
@@darktempest53 Perfect, thanks for the reply
Is 1tb ssd enough i want to start a gaming channel 😁
great video, as always!
Great info - Thanx !!
😃
Really wished I bought the SN850 with the first party proprietary heatsink instead
All these heat sinks are out of stock 😞
I love the look of your PS5 , I am soo copying that look.

Question: "What's the best external SSD for storing PS4 games?
Samsung 860 pro. And just add an external sata ssd enclosure
None, just get a 4tb external hdd. There wont be any difference when comparing it to a external ssd.
Why don’t they make 3gb SSDs?
Tough to separate the storage equally on the NAND chips (where the data live) by X2 or x4 modules. Eg a 4TB has either 4x 1024GB or 8x 512GB NAND chips physically. Hope that helps
Can you move your mic a little closer not easy to hear you.

Agree with all points except that factory made ssd with heat sink is better, these are made in China, with or without heat sink, in the same factory by probably the same group of workers. Save yourself some $50-70 and buy a $10-$15 heat sink and apply yourself, same result.
thx
Internal SSD expansion won't get faster than PS5(your wrong) all data goes thru the PS5 Custom IO( the overhead is already been used just too keep up with PS5 custom SSD
Umm.. I have about 3-4GB of recorded footage that says otherwise
None of the 7000+ drives get rate close to 7000 on PS5 test. Its cos the overhead is required by the PS5( Thats why Cerny said a overhead is required)
Sure 7K is an optimal maximum, but there are numerous examples here on the channel and on other sites clearly demonstrating some games loading faster on m.2 SSDs. I recommend looking at SSDs with high iops values in conjunction with games with hefty world building.
@@nascompares My point is none of drives will ever hit 7,000. Also PS5 SSD if it does get beat its only by tiny margin(PS5 drives does all the OS functions and controls the M.2 SSDs)
