I worked 30+ years with kids like this. I LOVED it. Boys and girls. What I learned the most is one of the main things they want and need is to be listened to. I talked to them not at them. After some of them left the program, they continued to stay in contact with me. I loved that. I’m retired now, and I still think of “ my kids”. I hope they still think about me. I believe they do. 😀❤️🌹🙏

“The child who is not embraced by his village will burn it down to feel its warmth” -African proverb This fits so many of the situations they were put in
@@batissta44 it's so plainly clear, it's a very relevant proverb. Your just closed minded.... No body is born 'bad'. Nurture is very important. There aren't just bad kids. Behaviour stems from a source.
I feel so bad for the kid who did the crime for his mum. That’s a culture that was obviously expected in the family, at 15, what ur mum says is ur whole world. There’s no way he could get out of that once his uncle shows up and says let’s go.
The law is the law and I'm glad they're exactly where they need to be. These the kids you dont want your kids to bring over, the ones when you're going to WORK at 4am and these guys sticking guns on you. Its 8 mitigating factors that shows the courts a kids most likely outcome and they run this big test to see if their minds are, was, and will be in a place to make adult decisions. Not just the crime it's those 8 mitigating factors, as well as the pysch test. These kids are all well aware and actually seem like they could've been good but those factors won't allow it now they gonna be the old guy yrs and yrs down the road and we'll be on with our lives

As someone who is into true crime, I'm shocked and saddened at how much time some of these kids got compared to adult men who brutally raped and/or killed someone. There needs to be better intervention for these kids.
The fact that the officer that runs their block cares for them and really tries to be down to earth and understanding that they are human just makes me feel so good for him. He’s such a great person, and you can tell he loves his job and what he does for these young kids that are in these horrible horrific crimes. ❤️

What bothered me was at the beginning the counselor lady said she didn't wanna be called a momma because that's alot of kids it's like those kids need a mother figure who knows how many don't and if she doesn't wanna be held in that regard then she should find another job

It makes me sad that this is special in the United States I’ve been to dutch prison and anybody that would have attacked a guard would have had the whole yard on their neck. Guards in the Netherlands almost all realize inmates are people and it’s not their job to punish them even harder than the judge already did. After close to 2 years inside I would greet any guard I’d see on the streets except for 2 pieces of dipshit but there’s always rotten apples.
Tell that to some of the Manson girls... they they been in prison since the 70s but some of them didn't kill anyone... but they don't regret what happened either...so should they be let free since technically they didn't kill anyone
I got locked up at 16 for robbery did 5 years . Im 27 now a journeyman carpenter , bought a house at 24 and havent went back . Met some of the greatest mentors in there , they helped me get my mind out the gutter , with the help of my wife , my kid and family .
I lost my mother at 7yrs old, grew up in house hold full of alcohol, drug, physical and psychological abuse, then lost my sister to drugs at 15yrs old, I got kicked out of two schools and was heading down a very violent and dark path, luckily I had my grandfather a former soldier take me in and discipline me to become a good man and use my story to happen for me, instead of to me. Each of these men just need a good mentor in their lives to inspire them because they're all courageous and can be great people. It's not too late.
Well said, good to hear your grandfather helped you back into society. Prison system in USA is brutal and leaves someone with verry little education about how to get into society after they get free.
nah its more of a look like a kid who never had a life and doesnt realize yet what he's really lost, it's almost a 'ok whatevs' look, at 30 it's going to really hit him
I can't imagine the psychological effects that prison has on young minds. You can't help but feel bad for these kids, even though they made poor choices in their young lives, it still sad to see them in there.
@@macysondheim they are just as much animals as the rest of us. Acting like criminals are not human is how you end up with them being abused and treated like dogs. @@macysondheimthey are human kids that have been traumatized, abused, and groomed into dangerous evil lifestyles. you need to gain some empathy for our fellow human beings.
your empathy is spot on and is a crucial piece in understanding how we get here in the first place. these kids’ poor choices are modeled by generations of addiction, every conceivable kind of abuse, lack of education, lack of opportunity. poverty lies at the root
I cannot imagine the sheer despair of having to sit in a white room for fifty years. The emotional and mental toll that takes is just mind boggling. Some of these young dudes seem to have not fully comprehended their situation, either.
In his case i think you are right , you can just imagine seeing him in 20 years , still in jail , still talking the same with the same gormless look on his face...
That young dad wanting his son to tell him he loves him when the poor kid has no idea who he is… he can’t seem to grasp that the child has no concept of who he is. He’s literally a stranger.
Yea, but this was filmed in 2014, and they say if the person is on good behaviour they can serve half the time, so that guy was only doing 8 years, if anything he should be out by next year for sure, or he has probably been out since 2018 if he was on parole and good behaviour.
yeah but like... is he not supposed to do that? i get what you're saying but one day he's gonna get out and that kid deserves to know who his father is.
well he basically just does not know how to talk to toddlers. he is lacking the knowledge about how a child develops. he kinda forces an interaction which, due to his knowledge and experience, makes sense to him I guess. so the toddler is quite overwhelmed and confused.
It's awful, he must be inconstant fear of his girlfriend giving up on the relationship. And his child barely knows who he is visiting, it's so sad. I hope that when the child grows a bit older, he will understand his dad's situation and wait for him to be free.
Somehow I doubt the love they feel is from the staff , but I'm sure they form bonds an friendships with other inmates , and physical relationships. Its very hard to go 30 years without human touch.
This might be personal, but I can confirm this feeling. The amount of trauma kids like this experience is usually what leads these kids into this type lifestyle. They aren't monsters, they're kids/people who have lost their way in life. If rehabilitation is possible for the kids, rehabilitation should always be the first option.
Pedofiles get less time than a kid who stupidly tried to rob someone, which he should be jailed for of course, but upon realising the home owner was home ran away which to me shows they had no intention of violence, him and his friend got shot, he watched his friend die, and gets 55 years for murder. I can't be the only person who this doesn't seem justified too. I don't think shooting and killing fleeing teenagers is reasonable force, yet that person will be free.
I did 29 years on a life sentence for killing my little brothers abuser. I don't understand how pedis only get a few years if they are caught. I talk about it in some of my videos
My son spent 6 years in jail. It broke me every day. I couldn’t imagine how these parents cope. Or how these kids cope. My son came from a excellent home with loving parents and extended family , he chose to run with a bad crowd. These stories do not discriminate.🇦🇺🙏💓
shoutout to that case worker who seems genuinely interested in helping these kids and caring for them rather than just tolerating them, like most of the system does
A federal court overturned the murder convictions and the sentences were reduced. Blake Layman, originally sentenced to 55 years behind bars was released after serving three and a half years in prison.

Quit blaming the parents, sometimes it is the kid. We did everything we could for our son, but he had street smarts or should I say he thought he did. He got in to drugs. That was his downfall. We sent him to rehab many times. I was afraid of him. He wanted to throw me of a balcony. Don’t judge somebody’s journey until you have walked in their shoes!
I agree with the lady in the first comment and absolutely disagree with the last I seen I don't have DR.Phil thinking he needs to buck up anyway bc it's not always bc the parents fuxked up somewhere no matter how well or strong a kid is raised they are still subject to their environment and young and very influential . You have to go back and think if a young lady thinks she's head over heels in love she can be talked into things that will cause her downfall and young men also are influenced love or not kids will think anyway they want no matter the parents. That is the saying been there done that you should've listened. And mental health as well as parents can't just be blamed either. Yeah maybe after drugs get involved mental health comes in bc starting young hinders the brain and mo matter what our chemicals. It always means the parents fuxked up somewhere is the oldest way of thinking there is and false. I was raised great and absolutely well informed and even seen addicts my age and older. I knew what was expected of me in life and growing up. And absolutely nothing growing up caused me to do what I did no one fuxked up anywhere made friends with kids who were fuxked up living in not the best conditions and decided I have always been more adult then anyone and I could choose my life experience and it didn't have to be the story book way of life. It was my choice my decision and again had absolutely nothing to do with my raising at all period. I'm well aware it could be the case of raising occasionally but that isn't no excuse at all. Even a 57 year old I know don't blame the raising or mental health for starting up meth one day she got married and thirty some years later he cheated and wasted money on young hoes got on meth and lady tried it with him bc she wanted his POV she got addicted the first time. Most these kids on this show anyway have their own preconceived ideas of their life soon as they can make ideas it's like a mental enslavement type of bullsht unfortunately.
as a father.. i cant imagine not seeing any of my children for 1 year... that look on his face when he realized his son doesnt recognize him. unbelievable
What did he expect? He is not in his son's life. He is not what a father should be. He is in prison for being a criminal. Of course his son will not recognize him. He is too little to understand he has a father who is not at home like he should. Poor boy, he has to deal with that because his father was not willing to just study and work hard to support his family like a man.
The gentleman with the son made me tear up man. I have 2 daughters and I could never imagine not being with them everyday. Keep that motivation bro and he'll respect that when you do get out. 💯

The staff in there seem very supportive and genuinely invested in these prisoners. It’s kind of sad that they won’t receive that kind of attention in the adult prison they’ll transfer to. They’ll be like fish out of water
So a guy in Canada literally tore apart a guy on a bus, threw around his body parts & walks away free because of an “insanity” plea but these kids get a life sentence for breaking into someone’s house & their friend getting shot?
keith donnellan I don’t agree. I think that’s a very harsh sentence for juveniles who didn’t actually kill anyone. They broke into someone’s house, yes and unfortunately one of their friends died but they’re not directly responsible for that.
you can tell which of these kids just made a mistake once in their life and theyre really sorry for it, and which ones dont deserve to ever leave prison. imo.
The meeting with his kid was so pure, he wanted to be there for his kid so bad. He knows what it's like not to have a father and the fact he didn't recognize him at first broke his and my heart. A lot of them probably feel more love and structure from the staff then they have ever felt anywhere else!
So, they are more happy in jail? However, we are safer.

I would still rather be home getting hit by my step-dad
Pedofiles get less time than a kid who stupidly tried to rob someone, which he should be jailed for of course, but upon realising the home owner was home ran away which to me shows they had no intention of violence, him and his friend got shot, he watched his friend die, and gets 55 years for murder. I can't be the only person who this doesn't seem justified too.
I don't think shooting and killing fleeing teenagers is reasonable force, yet that person will be free.

It’s the parents or it’s mental health, either way, if you kid does this shit you fucked up somewhere
My childhood friend hid from the police for about two days and when he was caught, he was charged for murder because the police murdered his friend. He is now in prison for 15 years. It still does not make sense to me.
Yes and he got 55 years because the owner killed his friend, which wouldn’t have happened if they didn’t break in. Madness!

I’m happy to say it’s been 2 years since I needed to call the cops for support during his violent meltdowns. It also helped that we moved to a city with better mental health care and my son got diagnosed with autism and PTSD.
