Quick Change Gearbox Build P6

  • Part 6 of Quick Change Gearbox Build: The Finale!
    In this video we assemble everything, (then reassemble it multiple times) and do some testing
    Note that the gearbox is very noisy due to the input gears. These are my first ever gears and a re a crude involute profile making them load at speed. There are also some shafts that I will fix up as they are slightly undersized and the gears rattle a bit in the multiplier assembly at speed.
    My biggest regret is the paint colour not matching!
    I've gone for a slightly different style in the video, trying to maintain the flow, but turning the pace down a bit to get some more concepts across. Let me know if it does or doesn't work!
    I have a patreon account if you wish to help support the channel. Through this you can get early access and more

  • @douglashank8480
    @douglashank8480 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's very satisfying to see the completed project. I could feel your pain each time you discovered a new little hickup that required a slight design change during final assembly. I've run into that sort of thing more times than I can count!! (Maybe one of these days I'll finally take the old machinists' advice and build a fast/easy prototype in wood or other soft material before committing my work to steel?)
    Would you be open to a couple of suggestions?
    If so, the first would be to build some guards to encase all of the moving parts. Open gear trains are ridiculously dangerous to work around. Covers also keep swarf from chewing up your gears and bushings.
    The second would be to coat the inside of all the guards in rubber and/or some dense foam to deaden the gear noise you mentioned. Simple aluminium sheet stock attached with small countersunk screws tapped into the side plates would work well. Making a one piece guard for the front and top, and hinged at the back would allow quick access for occasional oiling - and for showing off your creation to envious onlookers!
    I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your videos. Happy machining!

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, it needs a guard. I have a few things that I'll adress, then I'll cover it in. That will happen within the next couple of months

    WOW! That was a great job. Thx a lot for taking the time in sharing your design and build. Glad to see you used CAD. I love being able plan with a CAD tool. Even though it ain't perfect it sure does cut down a lot of mistakes.
    If you are interested, Wade'o Design did a conversion which I think is a great way to do it. He ended up with the best of CNC and manual. He can use his lathe in CNC mode when he wants and he can use manual mode when he wants. I thought having both modes is the best way to go. I believe this will be the future of Lathes as well as other machine tools. Right now the mfrs are milking the CNC modes for as much as they can for as long as they can, but it won't be long before that business model will be gone. The mfrs will have to have to some outside pressure to drop their prices and CNC/manual machine tools will come to be.
    Again, thx for sharing your great build.

    Hmm ... love your gearbox! I have a LYLAK (a what?) - it does OK; I've had it for 30(!) + years - still goes well: new drive change belt (link belt saves disassembling the lathe to put a new on eon...). I've loaned it out a couple of times (learning curve there, that one). Since I've been watching YT vids on machining, I've gotten a new zest for the machining trade!, though I am not a machinist - retired, still learning. I've discovered transfer punches and screws ... and other goodies, and discovc ered what some of my older (I was young then) tools are for!

    Incredible persistence! Why not use a 3D drafting app first? Design, interference test, etc all in the model. There are plenty free open source apps out there. Saves you most of the rework and your plans will be done first and updated as you mod the design.

      this was modelled in solidworks before hand, but there were a few things I missed, and there were also improvements that were apparent with a physical model in front of me as the build progressed

  • @kerplunkboydotNET
    @kerplunkboydotNET 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its so nice to see a talented mechanic sharing their work so nicely! I'm not one, unfortunately. I have no skill at all, but I have great ambitions. Let me explain my case so you can maybe help me: I have a farm and work on it like a mad man. One of the requirements is transportation of goods(fruits and vegetables mainly, but occasionally stones and wood for repairs and building). I do have a tractor, but using it is often overkill(I could, but it serves me better for plowing and harvesting). So my idea was to develop a cableway, but I'm struggling with the design for the "thing where I'll load the things into"(don't know the name for it). The cable itself might be very long and will need plenty of support along its way. The question is: How to make it roll on the cable and also be able to pass through/over the supporting pillars? If you could help me on this one I'll be very thankful! Just to try and make it simpler: Its like a ski lift, but for cargo.

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe ski lifts have rollers top and bottom that clamp around the cable, but the top rollers are spring loaded to move out of the way. The carrying container would need to be crimped onto the cable and poke out the side of the cable, go down, but then the centre of the basket be under the cable so it pulls straight down.
      But I would think a conveyor belt would be an easier option. I have another idea somewhat combining the 2 ideas, but it's a bit difficult to explain. Do you have an email? I could send a sketch

    1) keep hands safe from gear eating flesh.

      Technically anything is possible, but too much liability and beyond my current capabilities!

    Great build and pretty well thought out product, it’s was very interesting to watch the progress of this project, it was very difficult to sit threw all of the bad jokes. So summing up good machining skill’s, better than average fabrication skill’s but far below average comedy skills. Congratulations on the build but leave the jokes to old tony

      I'm working on a proper narrated version without the jokes.
      At the time I didn't think the project would be interesting (it's just holes in plates with shafts and gears after all) so I had fun with it, I got positive reviews at the time and over did it lol 😅
