    I make the gear selectors in this video. Essentially these are gears that slide on a keyed shaft and engage with the desired gear

    By popular request, at some point in the next year I will try to put together a 'proper' narrated version of this build

      Yep more discussion is on the cards for future videos. The next (final?) gearbox video I've decided to slow it down a tad and at the very least break down what component I'm working on

    You are obviously very talented and entertaining. And as an engineer my self I love the breakdown of the calculations behind. I’m lost for words seeing someone taking on a project like this. Great!
    It’s a fine line between fun and annoying how often one should use their TOT-skills though. Just saying...🙄
    Subbed for sure. 👍

      Cheers, I didn't think there would be so much interest so I decided to have fun with it. I was then egged on a bit and overdid the TOT effects.

      Cheers It's all yours!
      Although truth be told I had to weld a plug in and redrill one of the holes, but I think that was the drill wandering (the gears were meshed hard against each other by 0.1 mm or so). I should have used the paper between the gears trick

    • @ChirpysTinkerings

    Nice job, but please don't climb mill on a horizontal mill, as you can pull the work into the cutter, break the cutter and bend the arbour.

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Believe it or not, I'm actually conventional milling! It's the camera frame rate making it look like it's spinning the other way! Like when car tyres appear to spin backwards sometimes on film etc

    tommy ! i am making a bike and it has no gare's on engine ; i would like for u to make a 5 speed mini gare box for me' i will by it.let me know when?

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would be very hesitant to do this, if something were to go wrong on the road I am liable. Additionally my gears are straight cut spur gears these are not great at higher speeds (above 700 RPM I need hearing protection next to the gearbox). Sorry mate

  • @kissoonbilaal4902
    @kissoonbilaal4902 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi tommygun machine
    What formula or program can you suggest me to calculate friction loss for gear train in gear teeth and surface contacts of shaft taking into account gear pitch, viscosity of lubricant, bearing materials.
    Can you suggest me any books i can refer to??

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't calculate any of this for the gear train itself. The calcs shown for the sliders was only a basic static friction calculation (contact force multiplied by static friction coefficient). There would be resources online; university powerpoints, notes and handbooks for calculating what you are after. Sorry I couldn't really help, I come from a more static, structural background
