Middle class was foolish to put all its eggs in the bjp basket. Actually Chidambaram’s budget with its removal of capital gains was better for the middle class.

The fact is BJP never cared for the so called Middle class because the so called middle class never really voted BJP for less taxes, development, infrastructure. The sole moto of the so called middle class voting BJP was Hindu Rashtra, communal hatred etc. For the last 2 terms people voted BJP for every issue other than the core issues. So BJP is doing a great job.

as a working couple, my wife and I together make 8 digit annual income. direct and indirect taxes ensure govt ends up the crorepati. waste of time working hard. what a moronic govt - they levy tax on food, health insurance, necessities when inflation is killing everyone. heart goes out to those who are barely surviving. this GST nonsense has gone way out of hand. Modi can forget next election, so can BJP. Hopefully country isn't sold to A1, A2 by then.

Don't hold out any hope with any political party in this country. When they are in opposition, they rant about all the taxes imposed by the ruling party, but let them come to power and they will do exactly the same with some tweaks.
A good case in point (which I have already highlighted here before) is how the Congress increased the price of fuel days after the election results in Karnataka. All through the campaign they swore at the BJP about the high cost of living, then what have they done in their own State!??

One observation... when Congress imposes these taxes (they were not ,of course) or gets into corruption, there will be lot of ruckus and movements.. CII benefit on capital gains was given by them. They didn't impose tax on Long term capital gains in stock market when they were in power.

Sir, It is the middle class who voted the BJP to power. They wholeheartedly supported the extreme Hindutva in the hope that they will reap National Security, High Prices, Wilful sacrifices for building infrastructure, and international pride. The BJP promised all this and have delivered it also. They willingly endorsed the sentiment that Hindus are in danger, that grand statues and even grander temples are essential for this country, never mind the poor education standards, the poor condition of our healthcare system and we can also do without two meals a day, no sacrifices are too great to make this country a vishwaguru. Lets have a circus. Why crib about the taxes. They should tax even more. The middle classes opted for Taxes like Sweden and life like Somalia! Now they have got it for sure.

Indexation has issues. Most assets except Real estate , gold don’t have indexation. That incentivizes investors to invest in real estate more than equity markets. This causes inflation in real estate because there are other benefits with real estate too. Too much priority for one asset class is bad. Hence it was right to remove indexation for it.

High income tax in the main problem. It should be gradually reduced over the years , widen the tax base and this will eventually result in more consumption in the long run

Few factual things incorrect, How does 30% become majority if the appeasement done to other 70%? Farmers tractor loans are higher interest rates against Mercedes.

There are 6 defined classes, Super Rich, Rich, Upper Middle, Middle, Poor and BPL. Middle class constitutes of 31% amongst the six classes. Hope you got the Math. Secondly, tractor owning farmers (most of them) come under the middle class bracket a percentage also is classified as upper middle

    Very interesting comments on freebies.?
I believe that when inflation and unemployment have created havoc..target population has to reduce consumption..which is also confirmed by Consumption Report..
Private Consumption is biggest driver of GDP growth..
By these freebies it helps to promote private Consumption

Government does not favour middle class and Pensioners and seniors. Even savings account interest is taxed. In the name of rationalization capital gains tax on shares and MF 's is enhanced. Very unfair and unreasonable. 3% pays Income tax and this money is distributed as freebies to all. Agriculture income is not taxed, atleast income exceeding say 5 lakhs should be taxed. Tax gains to report in ITR2 is complex and cumbersome especially for Seniors and Pensioners with schedules 112A etc. These schedules are not designed properly. Tax filing should be easy and simple.

Why not an editorial on various aspects of gst.

Good editorial discussing about the middle class sector which are in a precarious Status. If unattended, it will cloapse and migrated to lower class, like it happen during COVID
The main culprit for the economic collopse is attributed to Freebies. For this reason the planned welfare growth is being inhibited by Freebies which are unplanned and important to get votes. Hence, freebies has to be given top priority at the cost of welfare measures.
This entire exercise is not an 'economic growth' but an 'economy transfer'. If this continues, one day the basic structure of the pyrmid will collapse.

A very pertinent point on superannuated persons selling property to make ends meet. If a house was purchased at 100 & sold at 1000. With indexation, if the property price is 500 then LTCG tax would be 100 as per old system and 112.5 as per new system. Typically, the superannuated person would buy a smaller property for 500 and earn interest on the balance 500 to make ends meet. With the new system, this is not possible & hence the outrage by middle class.

I grew up and lived in Chennai till 2005 and I disagree with your take on "freebies" given by the TN government. The state's economy is doing fairly well, considering the fact that the central government is not paying its dues to the state on time. The state has focused on inclusive growth for nearly a century now and has been quite successful in alleviating poverty levels. Your blanket statement on freebies being bad is not a balanced view. Please do study TN's growth over the years before taking a definitive stance on this.
