It is so so so good. It may look a game from the 1990s but the amount of pure chaos that can be made is amazing. I challenge you to make a city for giants. Its HARD!
This is epic. It should be featured by the developer as an ad for the game. It convinced me at least to but it! Very well done with the presentation, i never once got bored in this 1,5 hour video about dots!!! Hope to see more of this game from you in the future!!
@@JustDontDie Just passed 1K in my first city. This is an amazing game, probably climbing to be my favorite of all time. For example, right now i am realising that i will need to have industrial centers, not plant random workshops randomly, because of logistics and the amazing hauler "building". The game forces you to mimic reality so naturally it's amazing. In the same spirit, after noticing wood just laying around, i realised i need to organise my warehouses in central and regional ones, with the regional ones having a command to feed the central ones. Again the game forces you to organise this warehouse network not because of some boring random range or modifier that doesn't make sense, but because i have witnessed my workers travelling half the city to fetch or deliver recources instead of working, and that's not optimal. Amazing stuff. In the version 1.0 it will truly be a gem.
You can mine diamonds and sell them which makes you able to buy anything. I seem to remember being able to make jewelry too, for my cantor nobles. The game has changed a lot though
I did a little bit of gemstone mining and jewelry crafting, but since I wanted war with my only trade route, I planned to go independent and not rely on imports too much.
New version has some world map nodes that if you settle in provide a TONNE of high efficiency resource on your city map, but the other resource in the city are kinda weak. So it does reward specialization, this is particularly noticeable when you gain "efficiency" bonuses when reaching certain worker populations like having 100 gem miners = extra 10% mining output. Cantors are rather tricky to please now, you've gotta set things up better to attract them.
Thanks! TBH I'm not sure how much more military stuff there is. I love the systems, but with the AI being a little easy to cut through with archers because they stand there too long, I'm not sure how interesting it'd be. My next playthrough will likely have it, though that may be a bit before I want to put out another video on the game.
I love the idea of this game. I played a lot of Rimworld and hated that I couldn't really build an empire with a lot of soldiers and territories, this game lets you do that and I love it.
Thanks so much! It's always nice to see new viewers, especially ones that haven't heard of the game in question. It's a hard sell to get someone to watch a game they've never heard of.
This exact video, the story telling along with "tutorial" is the key reason I got into this gem of a game. To anyone who has not tried it - do. it does seem very intimidating at start, because all the variables and all the things you can do, but once you try a few times, you will love it more and more.
What an awesome video! This truly was a pleasure to get lost in. The meta gaming commentary, the surprisingly engaging story, and the overall fantasticly clean production value all make this video incredible. Truly great work my friend. I’m looking forward to the next one already!
Im actually surprised to see this game on youtube. I found this game before they had all the updates adding the tilapis and the upgrade system. But i couldnt get into the game because of the learning curve, but i might get back to it because of your video. Amazing work
Thanks so much! It's definitely got quite a bit to learn, but games like this are so so so worth it once you get over that hump and start to get to enjoy their systems.
Some tips: Deliverers also allow you to move items between warehouses, so for example you can set up a small local storage to collect from the fields and then export to the city center. Since the dedicated haulers are doing the hauling the workers can spend more time on their tasks. Water is getting changed in the next update, so this might be out of date soon: You can increase the fertility of farms/orchards by cutting irrigation canals to allow the water bonus to reach farther. While you can't build over the deep water, you can fill it in with land, from there you can either leave it or dig it back out to get shallow water.
Oooh, that's all super helpful! Noob question: Are deliverers a dedicated job like haulers I was underutilizing? I didn't even think about trying a canal or filling in the water or anything like that, but assuming it still works when I revisit the game, I definitely will. Are those jobs done in the same menu you mark tree for clearing, rocks for harvesting, etc?
Sorry, I meant haulers, but there's multiple ways to use them. By default warehouses will take in loose items, but if you set a resource to fetch [the >> button] the workers will also collect it from other warehouses, assuming they don't also have it set to fetch. Hauler posts only hold one item, so it's a toggle for fetch, which is on by default. Haulers have a higher carry capacity than other workers, so they manage in fewer trips. What this ends up meaning is you can have a small warehouse or a few haulers posts set up amongst the fields so the resources are centralized first, and then more efficiently hauled to where they're needed. Some examples: Constructing a hauler post near your next expansion to fetch materials for the builders. Setting a warehouse far from the city center to fetch for a food with only a single crate of storage, that way there's always food there, but not enough to drain the main storage. The water management is done from the same the tree/rock/wild plants menu, options are Remove Water and Dig Canal.
Thanks so much! This is supe rhelpful. I love supply lines and logistics, so this is like crack to me haha. I wasn't kidding when I asid I was looking forward to a second run.@@Kingsly9802
Amazing, can't wait for future songs of syx vids. Too bad that so few people narrate this game like you do, it's instantly 10 times more interesting when it's a revenge story
I agree! I wish more YTers infused that kind of story. On its own, this is a pretty regular playthrough, but I agree that weaving in story makes it so much more interesting to both make and to watch.
You know the game is immersive when you can role-play with yourself. Especially when it's a city builder. I'm so bloody happy that SoS is getting more and more attention. Jake (the developer) deserves HUGE kudos for making it. What's more interesting, is that SoS has a well-crafted, Tolkien inspired lore that fits the overall atmosphere of the game and its soundtrack. Keep digging enough and you'll scrape off some fascinating tidbits about races' culture, social relations, temperament and even why they believe in their own deity.
I was there at the battle of the blood field back in '42. Tilapi arrows darkened the sky as the Usurpator rabble advanced. It was said that their blood nourished our grain, and perhaps there is some truth to that. From then on, the beer had a metallic tang and a sanguine coloring.
Saaaame. It's got great depth, and it does a better job than any other game I've ever played of keeping it going into the late game. There's always supply shortages, housing issues, food problem, etc from 30 people all the way up through 3000. Though maybe fewer if I played better haha. The balancing is so finely tuned that it's crazy that a solo dev did it.
I’ve watched this vid multiple times, your story telling for one thing is great and it’s sold me on songs of Syx as well. The immersion of it all, resource management, research, the modularity of buildings and how you adapt to the enviroment available to you. Would be kind of neat to see a continuation of this city’s story, maybe a military outpost that grows into its own fortress due to a new growing threat. Or maybe some humans, tired of the mistreatment opt to make their own settlement.
Great video! It reeks with effort with all the narative and camera work, very captivating. Really nice job, friend, looking for more of your content for sure!
I love ur videos and how ur able to inject stories into these games. It makes these city building games (which i rly dont like to play) so intriguing and fun to watch. Keep it up!!
One of the major reasons you were having trouble with metal despite the mines being repeatedly upgraded is because the smith/storeroom and workers' houses were too fsr from each other. Making satellite towns and adding hauling spots between the mines and main storeroom makes it more efficient.
Thanks for the advice, and yeah, I definitely didn't realize the limited range of all of that stuff until later on. The plight of being a newer player.
This game is amazing, i played it like 4 months ago conquering half of the map , will need to play again, btw, one of the first techs you get really should be food preservation
i really hope you play more songs of syx again!! honestly even without you building such nice stories around it id just love to watch, specifically; you play more of it :D
as for the water I tend to maximize the land "surface area" where it touches the water, the shore I guess, by building landfills in the center of the rivers, essentially splitting the river into channels
Thanks so much! I kind of didn't have a big goal in mind after this and wanted the AI to put up more of a challenge to my army. I might try another video where I go even later into the game, but I'm not sure how much there would be in the way of challenge here, and that's usually a good time to call a video.
Ive seen this vid and a couple of your Dwarf Fortress videos. Really dig the storytelling aspect you bring to the table with your videos. Keep it up, mane
That freaking swerve into the ad. XD Nice to see a playthrough of Songs of Syx that goes into the late game. So many make videos that barely get past the couple hundreds and have not set up more than a shantytown. Really doesnt let one see the potential.
I can see why, but the game definitely went from good to really good around 500 people and to damn great around 1500. When you get larger populations and efficient city planning/economy management comes in to play, plus you start fighting larger armies and you need a strong military? So good.
When starting out, the first thing you make within 20 blocks of the throne is a hearth and a big well. Then you build a massive warehouse near the throne. By the time they are almost done with the warehouse you'll need food so you hunt the meat and you need. Then once the warehouse is done you make a three or four house block of long houses. Then after that you just start working on food options and it depends on your race and what they are good at. Once your stable on food you focus on industry and making money. Another tip is to get a trade agreement with as many of your neighbors as possible and as early as possible. At the start of the game you can usually get them cheaper than later on. But until you hit like 150 people I usually just slowly work on trade but I manually trade for what I need until I can let my import and export depots run on their own. Lastly, this game isn't very hard. It took me a week of watching videos and playing to really get everything down. Once you get the basics down it just gets easier and easier from there. It's not the type of game where you have to read up on it constantly. Like once you get over the initial hump it's game on and it becomes the most addictive game ever. Dwarf fortress and rim world don't even come close in comparison. I've played all three and SOS is better by a thousand fold. So much so I just start trying to play dwarf fortress again and immediately start thinking of SOS. Like I I downloaded dwarf fortress and rim world.
seen this game for a while but didnt take the plunge. But after this video i bought the game. It sounds like a great time! Very nice storytelling video :)
I loved this play through. It made me purchase this game. I wish i had a better system to have a great big civ.. I would absolutely love to see you do more with this game. I love the narratives you create. This one was top notch :D
wow i played the demo of this game a while ago and didn't realize they had such cool miitary battles.. seeing the ai bring soldiers up through the trees while setting up siege weapons is pretty damn cool
Always meet the enemy outside your settlement as soon as they lay on the siege, if you can win obviously. Just right click your city and click on the enemy army. It will bring up a total war type screen. This allows your settlement to be safe from catapults, and when you win, you get all their booze, clothes and gear. You also still get all the prisoners.
Very interesting to see other people's play styles! Im a very slow expander where I make sure I have excess food stocks, expand food production to meet incoming immigrants, started hatcheries as early as possible and rely mainly on their production to reduce immigration, etc etc to make sure my people's needs are always very well met and they love life (happy little farming community that exports coats). Then you have the machine that is Roveynmenen that grew to 2000 in 25 years, always battling for resources/homes/happiness etc, always actually battling, but is growing on a massive scale to get their revenge. Learned a few new things from your video! Was a fun watch, cheers.
15:35 when I was to poor to build big buildings, i would just set my entire population (besides farmers) to cut down trees, the trees will grow back pretty fast and they are all over the map, then I sell all the wood I get and buy whatever I need to build my big building
Nice job. These kind of games are hard to make snappy content for, and longplays have a less expansive reach. Made for a great introduction to the game, think I'll grab it
Good looking base my dude, just one advise, go full corn, is the best work- full ratio you can get without hydroponics. Also make chemfuel to power your base. Good luck on the rim
I tried the demo but couldn't get into it because I'm so used to Dwarf Fortress and was expecting it to feel similar. But just your intro here has convinced me to buy the full game and give it a solid try on its own merits. Can't wait to see what happens in the rest of this video! (I'm only like 3 minutes in lol)
There's a trick to the roundness thing that can let you still build the efficient squares. I put single tile fringes on the outside of buildings, and it projects a roundness effect to the surrounding tiles.
Saw several times thumbnails of this game my TH-cam, as a fan of rimworld for almost 5 years always saw it as kind of clone and never clicked or appreciated this game until now, This games looks complex and have a level o independence and design that made him a completed difference experience as a game, that i more like a city creator than a story writing like rimworld, I would watch more videos of this game or even try myself if I could edit out all the Super Micro-micro management them this game looks to have. But as a video from a content creator this video is Amazing, it's a narrative, it's a gameplay, and it's an overall showcase of the entire game, congratulations
Same, but a bunch of commenters convinced me to try it and I now owe them my first born haha. The game doesn't have much micro management if you use regular boxy buildings and don't car eabout aesthetics (as) much. And agreed. The city building is great, but it also has more story telling potential in general but especially as a youtuber that's amazing.
You didn't miss it. I did that, and prob should have dropped a line, but I tend to cut out more minor stuff like that, priority for jobs, or other stuff that's managing what's going on without directly contributing to the story I'm going for.
Great game, even better story telling while playthrough, I bet it took over 24h playtime on that save, but I wish to see much more of these. Great job and over 35k views in 4 days.. youtube algoryth is weird sometimes, but Im glad it send me here ;)
Haha, thanks! I NEED there to be more good playthroughs on here, but from what I've seen, everyone does your standard LP's which is a bit disappointing.
Second playthrough at some time? This was fun watching. And love the organic layout. You ever thought of doing an Auto-Accept-All-Immigrant series? Would be nuts !
"I always love when the game encourage you to stop using boring but efficient squares" I usually ignore that need, every other need gives much more happiness and efficiency is what I love
Valid. I normally do half and half, because efficiency is nice but you usually don't have to sacrifice too much to make things look decent, but this game makes me want to be stupidly inefficient just to watch pawns wander around nice streets. I have no idea why the game's tug towards aesthetics is so strong but it's gooooood.
Bro I was today years old when I realized you could make things BIGGER to increase output, I learned something in the first 5 minutes... I haven't even passed the tutorial it seems.
Funny hearing you try to say the Dutch word 'Omlijsting', strange name for a city. Love the vid. Might try the game myself. Would love to see another one.
The city can very greatly benefit from trade, instead of spreading out your resource production you can specialize to export, import the stuff you need. Even with smelting by importing ore and coal so you won't need to import metal can save you a lot. But by later game your conquests allow you to tax the land for resource which will literally feed the capital. Gotta hand it to you tho, almost at pop 700 before you started trading, most of the time I'd be exporting after the first year. =P
Yeah, I love that the game seems to emphasize that. But since I was sort of playing as the Tilapi for roleplaying/videomaking purposes, I figured minimizing trade was probably a good thing. Xenophobia and all. "It's totally fine for those outsiders to make clothes, but bah if we'll rely on them for food. Give me an animal pen to work!" There's no way to import research, right? You need to do that and something to fund the coffers/imports yourself?
@@JustDontDie Yeah, you could import the paper and food to fuel the tech pops. Humans tho end up committing a lot of crime when their pop gets high and the Giants hate humans, so you'd have to cut them out if you want many giants. I've also been playing the new beta version, and its changed even more again! Including trade. But the water changes are big, your farms probably lost a lot of fertility because you paved over the water, new version limits how you can use water to boost fertility even more to encourage the use of water pumps.
Another awesome video! Keep up the good work, like the pacing of the videos, I wonder if you have checked out a mod for the game that adds rifles and cannons. I've tried it and it tosses everything up in such a fun way, I either play as industrialized dwarves or try to hold out as farmers against an overwhelming technological advantage.

DF will always be fun to me but SoS is king.
I’m buying this game tomorrow and I’m absolutely pumped. Can’t believe I never heard of it.
That being said…
Hey hey people Seth brought me here.
seen this game for a while but didnt take the plunge. But after this video i bought the game. It sounds like a great time!
Very nice storytelling video :)
Same, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I loved this play through. It made me purchase this game. I wish i had a better system to have a great big civ.. I would absolutely love to see you do more with this game. I love the narratives you create. This one was top notch :D
We need more videos of that game! Its so good!
Love your storytelling :D The "I'm not, but..." part made me lose it in the begining
wow i played the demo of this game a while ago and didn't realize they had such cool miitary battles.. seeing the ai bring soldiers up through the trees while setting up siege weapons is pretty damn cool
Thanks! I've always been a fan of riding that line. Makes it more fun both for my personal enjoyment while playing and for YT'ing haha.
Was curious about which game you were mentioning in the Discord, this one seems really cool! Hope to see more! ^^
Great story playthrough! Thanks for highlighting this game!
15:35 when I was to poor to build big buildings, i would just set my entire population (besides farmers) to cut down trees, the trees will grow back pretty fast and they are all over the map, then I sell all the wood I get and buy whatever I need to build my big building
Love to see you play Syx!
Im really love this game. Many thanks to everyone who makes videos on it
Loved this video, both the content, the game and the video length. Would love to see more and I hope it happens!
Christ, a game of syx with no slaves. You really like it in hard mode.
the cut from the military-industrial-complex infowars advert to the fantasy-kitchen interior-design at 3:50 was jarring
Nice job. These kind of games are hard to make snappy content for, and longplays have a less expansive reach. Made for a great introduction to the game, think I'll grab it
Great work. I really enjoyed this play through.
Amazing, loved watching! And really made me intrigued with the game.
Hopefully you're enjoying the game!
Loved the video, gonna see if there’s a second one
There's a trick to the roundness thing that can let you still build the efficient squares. I put single tile fringes on the outside of buildings, and it projects a roundness effect to the surrounding tiles.
Ooh, instead of needing to use the rounded tool to get a proper curve?
This video got me into actually learning to play the game. Once you get past the scary UI it really isn’t to hard to go from there.
Yuuup. It's so good, though it's definitely got a learning curve.
Maybe I just missed it, but make sure you build janitorial places since they maintain everything, and maintaining stuff makes sure they're efficient
You didn't miss it. I did that, and prob should have dropped a line, but I tend to cut out more minor stuff like that, priority for jobs, or other stuff that's managing what's going on without directly contributing to the story I'm going for.
8:34 personal bookmark keeps time better than yt and boosts the video in algorithms use it aswell
Great game, even better story telling while playthrough, I bet it took over 24h playtime on that save, but I wish to see much more of these. Great job and over 35k views in 4 days.. youtube algoryth is weird sometimes, but Im glad it send me here ;)
About 20 hours haha, but a lot of time off screen was stuck to the max speed :)
Love the segue into the War Thunder ad lmao, gonna pray the Tilapi in my game don't get access to helicopters and tanks.
This is the best SOS play through I've seen.
Haha, thanks! I NEED there to be more good playthroughs on here, but from what I've seen, everyone does your standard LP's which is a bit disappointing.
@@JustDontDie Most of them are just a chore to sit through as well. This was very well done.
Would love another video like this! Amazing!
Second playthrough at some time? This was fun watching. And love the organic layout.
You ever thought of doing an Auto-Accept-All-Immigrant series? Would be nuts !
So glad you noticed how awesome nobles were was waiting for that lol
Pls make more! This video got me addicted to this game
I bought this game but it was a little too out of my visual wheelhouse to understand right of the bat. Glad you're bringing some attention to it
This vid convinced me to buy the game. Amazing video dawg.
I have no idea why the game's tug towards aesthetics is so strong but it's gooooood.
loved the pre video engagement on this one!
Nice video man!
lowkey shed a tear when you were talkin at the end there -- PLAY WAR THUNDER. People gotta calm down with these ads.
Never heard of this game before, now its at the top of my wishlist. Thanks bro
Welcome to my new addiction 😄
@@JustDontDie yea bud, gunna need you to put out another video of this game asap lol
Bro I was today years old when I realized you could make things BIGGER to increase output, I learned something in the first 5 minutes... I haven't even passed the tutorial it seems.
Looking forward to what else you do with this one
Funny hearing you try to say the Dutch word 'Omlijsting', strange name for a city. Love the vid. Might try the game myself. Would love to see another one.
It means Frame? Huh. TIL
Give me an animal pen to work!"
There's no way to import research, right? You need to do that and something to fund the coffers/imports yourself?
@@JustDontDie Yeah, you could import the paper and food to fuel the tech pops.
Humans tho end up committing a lot of crime when their pop gets high and the Giants hate humans, so you'd have to cut them out if you want many giants.
I've also been playing the new beta version, and its changed even more again! Including trade. But the water changes are big, your farms probably lost a lot of fertility because you paved over the water, new version limits how you can use water to boost fertility even more to encourage the use of water pumps.
This is such a neat game and a great video!
That was incredible, the improvements that can be done to AI factions will make even more
More wondrous
It was low key, but that was a hilarious sponsor transition
Another awesome video! Keep up the good work, like the pacing of the videos, I wonder if you have checked out a mod for the game that adds rifles and cannons. I've tried it and it tosses everything up in such a fun way, I either play as industrialized dwarves or try to hold out as farmers against an overwhelming technological advantage.
I haven't yet. This was my first full vanilla run, and I have at least one more vanilla run in me before I start modding if I ever do.
Damn man, I gotta say I love the style of your videos
Thanks! I've been changing and shifting over time, but I really like my current format too.
Great video! Love songs of syx
After putting in 30 hours in 3 weeks, same haha
I want to see more songs of syx. I like the game a lot, I feel like I was the only one who played it before sseth's video
This game looks like lots of fun. The graphics I feel make the game more approachable.
Yup! Enough to be pleasant to look at without being so much that they take time away from the systems or make things hard to parse.
Really well done!
just picked this game up cause of you, thanks for the sick recommend
Thank you m’lord JDD. I have found a new game to become addicted to.
I had 8 hours of flying and I wanted to play on my laptop the entire time, but the game is rough with only a laptop mouse haha. But I'm not addicted.
A video has never convince me to get a game so quickly before
It's so good. If I didn't record in 1-2 hour blocks for storytelling/videomaking purposes, I'd have binged a few 8 hour days...
Excellent ad transition
You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villan
