  • No other British wrestler was as loved and respected as The British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith throughout the 80's and 90's. In the WWF he was tag team champion alongside The Dynamite Kid Tom Billington. In this wrestling documentary we see how his life would be marred by tragedy. Today, The British Bulldog is remembered in the WWE Hall of Fame posthumously, as his life was cut incredibly short, even by wrestling standards.

I met Davey Boy Smith a few times. I remember seeing him after Summer Slam 1995 in which he took the time to talk with me. I’d asked Davey how he responded when people claimed that wrestling was fake. He said, “I tell them, ‘Get in the ring and I’ll show you how fake it is!’” I didn’t know about what was happening “behind closed doors” but now thinking about his response to the question, there was a lot more to it than I realized. Rest in peace, Davey Boy Smith…thanks for the memories.

I saw Davey Boy Smith wrestle live once in Winnipeg in 2002. I believe it was his second last match before his passing. It was at a small community centre with no more than 150 fans. It was a thrill to see him in the ring, however, you could see that he was struggling physically. One of the greatest of all time. RIP 🇬🇧

His sister had terminal cancer, so Davey dedicated the match to her on British television because he had been told beforehand that he would be winning. Vince changed his mind on the outcome a mere hours before the match took place, thanks to Shawn Michaels' politicking. That particular incident played a big part in Davey's eventual "downfall," and I'm very surprised it wasn't mentioned.

I was leaving school age when Davey boy left us and all my pals was telling me too hit steroids as big lad anyway! I passed on it as always just wanted too blend in! Was fighting with blokes in there 30's sometimes 40's from being 14 years old and being almost 6ft tall and 15st at 14 years of age! Did not help knocking about with older lads that was left school! Having too fight a lot learned me bulk was not answer was being fast fit and being able too recover fast if you are hurt!! Steroids don't help cardio or speed at all!! You are not supposed too raise your heart rate on roids as will enlarge your heart and possibly put fluid in the muscle tissue of your heart! Anyway all older lads who was trying too get me on roids with them have some sort of problem from the steroids!! I beat them all when they started playing funny buggers with roid rages in full effect ha ha! Regardless of there size they all gassed when I literally took it easy on them!! Mind I used to go too the body like no one's business back in the day! Piss week now due too life changing injures but still good enough too sort out the pretenders! I'm so surprised any of the wrestlers of my childhood are still going as steroids abuse was insane they was all at it! The high intensity of the wrestling whilst full of steroids must have killed off and caused so many heart problems and heart failure it's almost unthinkable how they got away with it! So many people abuse them still too this day knowing fine well that they are playing Russian roulette! Cardio is always key your body will only go as big as its supposed too and don't train for bulk train for fitness strengh and conditioning stuff size as chasing bulk is what will kill you!

@@Michiganfan105 Yeah...this was a pretty fucked situation. Davey Boy was to go over and dedicate his victory to his sister Tracy who was dying of cancer. But of course this was the 90s and Shawn being Shawn was not gonna job. He and HHH managed to sweet talk Vince into changing his mind. Bret hated this going down as he thought it was stupid the Hart Foundation wasn't there to save Davey. He thought Shawn did this on purpose to fuck with him and his family. He was already set to win the World Title..he didn't need the European Title. Bulldog goes down in his home country while HBK celebrates with his new trophy as he's pelted with trash. Stampede Wrestling was where I first became familiar with several of the future WWE wrestlers. Among the ones I remember were Davey Boy Smith, the Dynamite Kid, Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Jake 'the Snake' Robert's, and the Honky Tonk Man.
I grew up watching the weekly televised show, fortunately living only several hours south of where it was filmed.

I'm shocked to learn that many of my favourites have died due to the effects of drugs and Davey being one of them. i always looked forward to seeing the British bulldog, and didn't realise until now how much loved the guy.

Also: you look at Davey's last match on Heat vs. Eddie Guerrero (it's on TH-cam) and it's so good.
Davey is clearly clean. He's moving quickly, he's agile, he's focused and he does some solid athletic spots. It's how he should have been at the very start of that run.
It's such a shame that he didn't keep going because he could've shot straight back up the card again.

His drug use was still out of control. He was a shell of what he once was when he got back to WWF. JR spoke about how before this he was pretty out of it on a house show in Calgary before this match took place. He said he was slurring his words and staggering a lot. Plus his marriage to Diana was crumbling at home which led to a domestic incident. The decision was made to let him go..the door was open for him to return if he got clean...but that wasn't to be.

Would have been nice to see Davey Boy become a WWE champion instead of Diesel. I guarantee you Davey Boy Smith would have been a bigger draw than Diesel who was the lowest drawing champion.
