Bret never lost popularity in the U.K. even when he turned heel.
His heel turn was simply in America only. Outside of the states, they still treated him as a face. Given his character, he was playing that role perfectly.
Absolutely man. His legacy just grows year on year. In my opinion, the best pound for pound professional wrestler there ever will be.
He's lost popularity here now since he's cried for the past 20+ years. I guarantee you as I type this comment he's somewhere right now crying about Hogan or Vince or Goldberg or Shawn...He's a bitter old man. Vince made this man millions of dollars and he's lived a life better than most of us could dream of but you never hear any gratitude from him.

Yeah Bret can sometimes come off as bitter…with good reason. The man lived wrestling. He had it ripped away from him. Not just what Goldberg did…but Vince, hogan, etc. plus that’s all he’s ever asked about. People focus more on that shit in interviews, stuff like Owen and Montreal…rather than beating flair for the title, etc.
with WWF and WCW, there was so much backstage politics involved that it was probably heartbreaking to have something you’ve loved doing your entire life be turned into a shit show. It’s like the adult version of finding out Santa Claus isn’t real.

Bret's integrity for the sport as a spectacle and a 'contest' is what holds him in the upper echelons of greatness! He knew they could put together an amazing match, a match worthy of being last on the card despite it being an Intercontinental Title match. His ability to see things unfold, his imagination and then his ability to perform it....2nd to none, the guy was all class no matter what you think of him and the Hart family. Tough sport but they knew how to bring it all together. Amazing talent :)

I was at Summerslam '92 and in the section we were in it seemed everyone was chanting for both performers, "Bulldog" *clap* *clap* "Hitman" *clap* *clap* and repeat. And as a good british crowd we appreciated the "good sportmanship" at the end.

To all you people saying "Bret is so full of himself" He's the best in ring performer ever. Without Bret, there is no Austin(his words) there's no attitude era. The list of big wrestlers that have said their best match was against Bret is endless. He made wrestlers, his story about Montreal has never changed and was proved right when people admitted what they did, and for people saying he is bitter, well. Look at what happened to him and his family. It's heartbreaking, it truly is, but what should never be forgotten is that he is was and always will be the best in ring story teller ever.

Bret hart was a low card vanilla midget and he was boring.
Bret hart never started the Attitude Era. It all started mainly because of the NWO. Austin, Sid and DX were the inception of the attitude Era. Their push and then being tweeners or anti heros is what started the attitude Era.
Bret hart wanted the new generation era to continue forever. And WWF got popular only after that vanilla midget was out of WWF.

1992 was Bret's year. The best match at WM, the best match at Summerslam and the best match at SS. Which included the IC and WT wins.

Its hard to put a number on his matches. My Fav was him and Mr. Perfect. Both live matches for the IC title, which is the greatest title ever. I loved his matches with Shawn and Undertaker. Never had a bad match.
His match with Hennig was a masterpiece. It didn’t need any hype or gimmicks. To two of the all time greats putting on a clinic and telling a story in the ring.

That was one hell of a match. Bret choreographed that whole match. He was the director, the writer, the choreographer and carried Davey Boy Smith all the way. Davey definitely gave it his all in that match. That's Davey's best highlight in his Wrestling career.

Bret has claimed Davey was coming off a crack binge, Brets own sis Dave's wife at the time has said that's not true it's also been supported by others. @@ianmeadows8719 Nobody claimed it was crack mate, he always maintained it was a 24 hour coke binge with the Anvil, so you're running away with your imagination and trying to pin things on someone that they never said.
Davey clearly had problems seeing he was made to drop the belt to Shawn almost immediately after that Summerslam win.
Also, if you watch the match itself, Davey was gassed very early on and was blowing all the way through it. The high spot with Bret's plancha where he was supposed to catch him and didn't, highlighted perfectly that Davey was struggling on the night, but Bret was such a genius that he turned the botch into some modified reverse bulldog that looked so cool everyone thought it was deliberate. Bret nearly blew his knee out if you look at how his trailing leg got contorted, but the guy soldiered on to deliver a 5 star match.
Bret marks? Just shut up man.

Bret and Bulldog were always my two favs. Love the whole story about this match but I never understood Bret’s criticism of the end. I think they did exactly what Bret wanted.
Bret is such a class act.
I remember Bret going a little heelish in that match and getting some boos, especially after lifting Davey by his hair lol. I also remember that finish coming out of nowhere and Bret was right. Once he was hooked there was no way out of that. It was two very creative finishes back to back going back to Bret's reversal pin on Piper at WM8 and then the finish at SS92.
Love the insight that you're on course to have a great match if the fans aren't sure who is going to win and that the long-term story is equally as interesting no matter who does; looking beyond protecting your "spot" benefits the whole card.
Fans are going to come to see their favourites -- most people don't give up on their team if they lose, instead they watch again and keep rooting for them.
When wrestling had more mystique you mainly had the character without as much real life stuff mingling with it (aside from personality informing how gimmicks landed on-screen), but then again the wrestlers weren't protected as well back then (despite Jesse Ventura's best efforts).
It's a delicate balance -- you have a group of guys who have a livelihood as well as a legacy to consider. Bret will always be the GOAT in my book -- love for the art form combined with natural talent and work ethic shaped him into the best (for me) and the proof is in the matches.
Not gonna lie: When I think about the SummerSlam PPV: THIS match is one of the matches that comes to my mind. Another classic that so happen to have Bret in it was 2 years later: Bret vs Owen in that awesome Steel Cage Match.
Probably my all time favorite Bret Hart match. The story is so good.
We didn’t pack Wembley to see Bret lose, we packed it to see Davey win.

Warrior v Macho was the main event. It was advertised that way. Bret v bulldog was not advertised as ss 92 main event.

I was 5 at the time and Bulldog was my favourite because he was British, I’m British and from the same part of the country as him. After watching that match Bret became my favourite and has remained so ever since.
I think Bret's ancestors are also British.
That was like Bret said top three matches of his career he had classics with Mr perfect and Shawn Micheals too

The way Bret describes the match in this interview is exactly what I felt at the time. I thought at the time when he lost, it didn’t hurt him one bit to lose and they both came out winners. Even though I was and still am a huge Hit Man fan, it did not bother me to see him lose that night.

It's not just not knowing who is gonna win, but caring about both wrestlers, and having the story if either of them win being compelling and satisfying, so you as a viewer are just along for the ride, not hoping for one or the other to win for one reason or another. Those are the most exciting matches, and are hard to setup

I like to think he would've been doing the 'enough is enough' stuff with Owen.
I never understood why Vince would give Bret I think a 10-year deal or something like that but later come back and say that he couldn't honor it. I know WWF at the time was hitting a rough patch but before that happen, I would think Vince was doing really good to offer or give someone a 10-year deal. Would have been great if they could have worked out a smaller deal like 3 or 5-years and Bret stayed because WCW didn't use Bret right. I for one would have never had him align with the NWO unless maybe a swerve , Bret has always been his own man and only group he was in was his family stable. Bret should have stayed his own and a few people or friends join him to battle the NWO, or Bret joined the WCW side with Sting and DDP and such.

The mid-80's to the mid-90s was my favorite era of wrestling. That match at Summerslam 1992 was amazing. Loved BB and BH.

I met Davey Boy Smith and his family outside of the Calgary Zoo in 91 or 92 when I was with my classmates on a school trip. He was the nicest dude ever. Sadly he had passed away a couple of years later

Butt Fart couldn't even get up with a back-flip, not even going into the real wild stuff like Top Rope Salto pulling back into ring like Shawn not only won Royal Rumble but did many times even on small occasions. Real top notch entertainment in ring and on mic.
Bret Hart shouldn't have been hyped like that 1994-1996. His 1992-1993 on the very top was an OK experiment but was more than enough by that stint. Yeah WM Davey Boy and SS against Shawn were def his Highlight Work.
By 1993 his gimmick and promos already lame and unevolving. However almost entire Roster sucked 1994-Forever!

Bret was my favourite wrestler as a kid. That show was a massive reason why.
I really like how he puts over Davey at the end. Saw the match several times and although you see Davey is definitely not in peak form, he does everything he needs to do and holds his end up well enough for the match to still be a classic. It's not like he is Warrior at WM 6... just looking finished before the opening bell.
If Davey was clean, and better conditioned, this match would be out of this world.

I am pretty sure that Rick Martel pinned Bret the same way when Strike Force successfully defended their tag team title belts against the Hart Foundation on the Main Event on February 5, 1988. But due to time constraints, the ending of that match was not televised, as the TV program ended about 30 seconds into the match. That was the same show that Andre beat Hogan for the WWF World Title due to the twin referee counting the pinfall on Hogan even though Hogan's shoulder was clearly up.

I have to disagree with Bret a little bit on that being the perfect finish. It would have been perfect if he struggled to kick out but he didn't. Go back and watch it. Once Davey has the legs, Bret doesn't move a bit as if he took a devastating finisher and had nothing left for a kickout.
The point is that the pin looks like quick and inescapable within the few second quick out window.

Bret was definitely my favourite wrestler as a young kid. While I dislike some of his ego and arrogance in later years he's still the best. To see him give Davey credit here is really cathartic and nice.
But I think we have to see Summerslam 92 as Davey's moment. An Englishman walking out at a sold out Wembley, and winning in the main event, is perhaps something that is singular and difficult for non-Brits to comprehend

The ending to that match was awesome! If I remember correctly, it was the same ending used for Bret's match with Owen at Wrestlemania X.
The first match with Owen was the best match I ever saw Bret in. The Bulldog match is a close second. There was just something about the way him and Owen worked together.

Now realized Bret can pull off great matches despite losing:
SummerSlam 1992, WM 12 (first-ever Iron Man match; 1996).
Heck, add Screwjob too (Survivor Series 1997).
Hunch telling me some wrestlers would sulk and not performing at best as their subtle protest for losing the title.
In retrospect, Bret began his WWF/E career as a borderline jobber. He earned his keep, while turning top Superstars that time much better.
I was hoping Bret would have mentioned Davy saying "I'm fooked" toward the end of the match saying how he was blown up.
Bret has always understood that an artist should always work with another artist in wrestling. I think his problem was that he was unable to accept that wrestling became an entertainment business rather than just artistry. Sometimes you can't make money unless you sacrifice a part of the art. Wrestlers used to be master choreographers, and that has unfortunately changed. Bret is truly one of the last of his kind.

The IC Title from Bret to Davey to Shawn. No year after they had an outstanding Roster anymore.
Despite "I'M FOOKED", it turned out to be one of the greatest matches in the history of professional wrestling. Easy top 5 tier.

I feel sorry for bret sometimes, he should when looking back at his career and be smiling from ear to ear but because of someone he looked at like a father figure chose to betray his trust which i think more than being screwed is what broke his heart(no pun intended) and then when he out of any wrestle thats ever stepped foot thru the ropes shouldve went out the way he wanted had that taken away from him by someone who should've been still training to be safe and professional all in a instant, i can see why he would be bitter and sad about how thing went down

People only think about the drug problems Davey had because Bret keeps repeating it. But whether Bret realizes it or not, Davey wasn't dragging because of drugs. He had a very bad back problem and spent the night before at his parent's house bed ridden. Not partying all night with Jim Neidhart like Bret keeps saying. Davey obviously had his demons, but that match and that time it was his back not drugs that was holding him down.
There is an interview with his daughter Georgia where she talks about that. Davey was trying to hide the injury because he didn't want to lose his spot and momentum.

How old would his daughter have been? Maybe you're right, but wouldn't Bret (who was there, as an adult) be the most reliable source? He did say Davey Boy gave 💯.
@@J0HNJ0RDAN Bret has backtracked on that story quite a bit. Bret has since said many different versions. The truth? Bret guessed based on Davey's history of substance abuse because he couldn't get in touch with Davey the day or two before. Jim was out of it so he had no memory and Davey was trying to hide his injury so he didn't lose the biggest spot and payday of his career. Also, many members of the family have since said they saw Davey at his parent's house the days before. Not just Georgia.
