  • It is mid winter in New Zealand and I am planting potatoes, garlic, elephant garlic.
I am planting first early potatoes this week, which are very fast growing and should give us a crop in around 2 months time.

We are setting up a small #offgrid #homestead on a section we recently bought after emigrating from the UK to NZ looking for a simpler life. Unlike most schoolies our bus is a little older, built in 1968. We are busy planting trees, growing our own food and setting up solar panels, water collection and grey water irrigation systems. Join us for the journey @projectparadiseNZ

Hi. I grew Elephant garlic in our community garden plot one year and it did really well. It just takes up so much space! I planted garlic in a large potato pot today, and it's NZ grown supermarket garlic. But I keep noticing that the Chinese garlic does sprout and I've sometimes grown it for cutting the green part, like chives when it's young. It's lovely to have your NZ content, and to see your wonderful garden. In northern NZ potatoes get psyllids in the hot months, so I tend to grow from now on also and not bother later on.

Thanks for that, not many people watch my content , so its very encouraging to hear when people enjoy it. Good info on psyllid. Not heard of them before, will keep an eye out when it warms up.

Yup I always plant a third potato line start of July, abit south of you. When there first leaves come up I cover with compost again to avoid August frost. Garlic and onions in, I've never been able to get any large varieties.

That's a good idea. A lot easier than frost cloth.

I got the elephant garlic from the tree crops Waikato annual sale. Great place to get plants, you probably have something better in your area. Looks a lot more rural down there. I can imagine there is a real offgrid community where you are?

@projectparadiseNZ yes, I only have 600m2 of garden as I'm urban but there are a lot and a growing amount of people doing the full off grid thing. One thing I thought wile watching, I made a sculpture from old CDs to keep the birds off my silverbeet might work for you a couple on strings or something.

@@offgridRockets thats a good idea. I have almost no slugs and snails as the birds eat them all, so I am reluctant to net it all off. Its also a huge hassle. A few cds are a good idea, at least it would keep the bird activity down. Only seems to be an issue in winter.
