I agree. I appreciate the fact that Nintendo was trying something new. It's just that they could have done some things better. Like better dungeon design, or a more solid storyline. But yeah I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more traditional Zelda titles in the future. Aside from Echoes Of Wisdom I mean.

@@Mr.Jshawgames93 Judging from Aonuma comments about "Echoes of Wisdom", it WON'T be a traditional Zelda game. It's supposed to be the "BotW-ification" of 2D Zelda.

@@HoboWithAShotgun You're right what if all of the people who speak Japanese and read this are wrong. And so are the people who speak English. And the multilingual who speak both. And the translator whose job it is to relay the meaning of the Japanese words to English speakers. And Google, what if Google is wrong too? And what if it's not just the ign interview, what if every time Aonuma has talked about his distaste for linear Zelda, it was all mistranslated? And what if even Aonuma himself is wrong about what he said and is just being gaslit into thinking he's tired of the Zelda formula? And what if you speak both Japanese and English fluently and can produce a philological treatise proving that even Aonuma himself doesn't know how to properly use the word "nostalgia"? BotW and TotK are excellent video games, but they're terrible Zelda games. You did an excellent job outlining examples that support this claim.
I always wondered why no one ever discussed the barren wasteland of a map in BotW. Sure, it may fit the theme of The Great Calamity, but Nintendo cleverly catered the story around this apocalyptic world in order to not outshine the eventual sequel. They then "expanded" this universe by adding the depths and the sky for the sake of it.
I bring this up because I wish we would have seen a bustling metropolis rather than the seemingly endless unsettled terrain. Take Castle Town from Twilight Princess as an example but on a much grander scale.

Telling a story through gameplay can be a good thing. But the execution was lacking in the Breath Saga. Only my opinion. You're free to disagree of course. People took notice of it more because Zelda titles have always had really rich stories, which The Breath Saga doesn't have.

I agree. They're good games. Just not very good Zelda games. Thank you. I appreciate that! Yeah, I do think the concept of the Calamity is cool. I just wish they told a more in depth story revolved around it. Preferably with playable mandatory flashbacks. How the Calamity effected Hyrule and such. Really make us feel sadness for the people of Hyrule. That would be incredible to see a full fledged castle town. If not in the present at the very least in flashbacks. Or perhaps you could switch between time periods much like you could in Ocarina of time, except the mechanics would be more in depth. That way you could explore a once thriving castle town in the past or a destroyed one in the present.

I personally worry about the new Echo's of Wisdom game. When you strip away the staple of the series, can you really call it *The Legend of Zelda?* If Zelda was in a stand-alone game without Link or Ganon, could you even refer to it as such? At what point is it "Zelda's Cave Exploration" and not a mainline game.
The reason Princess Peach could have her own solo game, even if it was basically Balan Wonderworld but better, is because Mario is a medium and a franchise. There is Freedom with the IP. The series has taken risks in the past that have paid off. Becoming an RPG, a Monopoly board game, or even a Ghostbusters mansion exploration simulation for Luigi. This works, because Mario is not grounded. No cannon lore connects all the games or the series. It is simply Mario.
The problem with too much freedom is that you always have the solution at the time. And sometimes... the solution just isn't all that interesting. There is a feeling in video games. If you give a player multiple combos and abilities to use, but just pressing X works 80% of the time and is the most effective way to deal with the problem, the player is going to press X 80% of the time. (We all built the hoverbike in TOTK)
My hope is that Zelda's Echos would be found mid dungeon and would be used to solve puzzles and defeat the boss. This is my hope. I doubt it will turn out this way, however. Personally I wanted Zelda to feel more unique than to have her total abilities be a gimmick of the game itself. Zelda being a mage and learning new spells would have been much more fitting for her character.
I actually like the Role swap because it sticks to the cannon lore of the series. Link already defeated Ganon and fulfilled his role as the Hero of Hyrule. (a Hyrule without Link doesn't seem to interesting unless it is a complete spinoff with brand new IP). Zelda is doing what she can and is capable of. She is not replacing Link as a whole, but filling a missing position in her own way. Zelda has always been strong in the past, but she always did what was needed of her and that usually required Sacrifice or the Assistance of Link.(Which is fine)
You see, what makes a Zelda game feel like Zelda is not that hard to answer.
    1. Tight intricate puzzle design.
    2. New items that you gain halfway through a dungeon that is then used to beat the rest of said dungeon and the eventual boss.
    3. The Legend of Zelda is generally a Metroidvania-style game. It often teases you with heart pieces or objects that scream "HEY! you cannot get me now, but come back later when you get that cool item from (Enter Dungeon Name Here):_________
    4. Link, Zelda, and an incarnation of Demise must exist.
Finally, I could be wrong but Minish Cap was another game in the series where Zelda and Link were childhood friends.

If you ever use it up, you can visit her again and get a free refill.
Anyways I just wanted to add this small little detail cause it adds on to the point you were talking about in this section. WW takes the time to establish who Aryll is and why Link is so eager to save her, and drives it even more home by showing that your not just saving Aryll for Link, but doing it for the sickly Grandmother who just wants her grandchildren to come back home safe

I like both formulas tbh, but i do agree that TOTK feels way too similar to BOTW. And don't get me wrong, i love the game and enjoyed my 300 hours in, but now i just put it on its shelf and that's it. I don't see myself ever replaying it (whereas i did multiple playthroughs of BOTW).
Personnally i don't mind if the old formula doesn't come back, as i enjoy replaying old Zelda games from time to time. My autistic brain feels very happy when coming back to a comfy game that i know very well x)
I hope the reused map for a sequel never comes back, as it proved to be a bad decision for TOTK. Having so few sky islands and depths that feel so empty of meaningful content really hurts the game.
I also hope they bring back some of the old design philosophy, mainly keys and locked doors to make more intricate navigation in dungeons. Restricting player's freedom in a dungeon makes sense, and you can still have big chunks of it being non linear at the same time. Some of the best old formula dungeons did just that : OoT water temple, SS Sandship, MM Stone Tower and so on. They came closer to that middle ground with TOTK but disn't quite reach it yet imo
Elden Ring managed to make amazing classic Souls dungeons within its open world, and we're all happy for it. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. I feel that we kinda did it to ourselves when the crowd cried about SS being too linear and restrictive when the game has some of the best dungeon design in the series period.

i think more than anything, i like and want for LoZ to continue with the open world aspect. I like being able to do whatever i want, whenever, and wherever. I love the environment and exploration, and sometimes the lack of music and sounds of nature is so relaxing. I find it more enjoyable than other games. and most of all, i like to leave the game and return to it easily and quickly without spawning at a fast travel point.
However, the writing and story could definitely be better. I do like that zelda in botw Disliked link this time. that was fun

  • @DirewolfMemento
    @DirewolfMemento หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think the new series needs to be a happy medium of both New and Old Zelda. I like the exploration aspect of the BOTW and TOTK and there were even a few moments in TOTK that had emotional highs with Zelda's sacrifice, but it suffered from non-linear progression.
BOTW told you everything at once at the beginning of the game. There was no story to experience, the king explained the entire story in an exposition dumb, removing you from the stakes of anything that happened. I believe that BOTW should have had you play through the majority of memories instead of you finding them, and even sent you through a last stand as Link, but making that fight unwinnable. Then having a timeskip (suitable for zelda games) Only for you to be resurrected and finally see your own failures in the form of a post-apocalyptic Hyrule.
TOTK should have shown you a sequence of cutscenes that was fixed regardless of which tear or dungeon you visited first. That's so you don't spoil the story on accident and didn't have to sit through those terrible dungeon cutscenes that were Copypasted. TOTK also wasn't a sequel to BOTW. There was almost no mention of the Champions or the Guardians. Nothing from BOTW affected TOTK. It simply was not a sequel. It might as well been a different game since 90% of the characters didnt remember Link, even in the village he bought and owned a house in. Which he used to live with Zelda. (They all remember Zelda btw. But not Link.)
The issue is that neither of those games were *Personal* like Twilight Princess (when Minda was dying I'm sure you all rushed to try and save her). Because everything happens as a memory in the breath series, nothing you did actually felt impactful to the story.
As far as gameplay goes. Shrines are a bad Idea, at least on paper. They all look the same. Sometimes it's quality over quantity. I shouldn't have to feel like a shrine isn't necessary or is a chore. Make it important. Make it a dungeon. Give me permanent rewards that aren't perishables minor health or stamina upgrades or BOTW DLC gear.
Ratatasker mentioned in his video that Link knowing where Zelda is in TOTK makes him look bad. As everyone is running off, putting resources into finding her, Link keeps quiet even with the knowledge.
Music with Coldgera and the main theme as well as the final boss themes are amazing in TOTK. BOTW should have had it's trailer music in game.
Also you can repair your weapons in TOTK its just obscure. Also you forget Spirit Tracks where you play as Zelda and Link. Albeit Phantom Zelda

In Tears of the Kingdom specifically, you can feed damaged weapons to Rock Octorocks and they will repair and polish them to full durability (whereas in Botw they can only polish rusty weapons). It also buffs whatever runes the weapon has. I have a full inventory of Durability Up++ weapons and I never struggle with the weapon durability, because if my best gear starts to break I can just switch to a new one and repair them later.

You were right. Game looks good but it seems like the current Zelda philosophy is "We used the old formula too much, so we're going to use the new formula as much as we can".

I like all the zelda games, but take your points about the breath saga games, i think totk is a better game, but had a lot less replay appeal for me because i felt like i was revisiting a world that was too familiar to me, and the depths and sky islands didnt offer much variety. I wonder if people would have fewer complaints about the shrines if they were themed according to the regions, so there would be a different look to a shrine depending on which region it was in.

Yeah Tears is definitely the better game. If it was only the first in a new beginning for the franchise then I think a lot of people would be more forgiving towards it. For sure, the world looks pretty much the same all around. That's actually a really good idea for the shrines. I think it would definitely help lessen the complaints.

Yeah look over there, it's named "Fire Temple." Themed dungeons fixed! 🤓 Oh you think they should have themed the shrine? Well there's sand in the desert ones so you're wrong. 🤓 Oh you hate weapon durability? Bro you can literally just memorize where octorocks are and fast travel there, and throw a weapon in. 🤓 Maybe the reason people complain and argue so much about this is because they can't voice their gripes about a game in their favorite franchise without people telling them that it's already good enough and they need to constantly further define why they don't like things or why something is lacking. You can't prove somebody wrong for not liking a game.

@@CodeRed0 Well for one the dungeons are themed, even if you consider them dungeons or not. The reason people criticisms of these games are met with resistence is because they all boil down to complaining about things not being like they were before. Even when *back then* the very same fans complaining now were complaining about the series becoming stale. The Zelda cycle is also exhausting, and it's the same old story. The newest Zelda game is overrated until the next one comes out and suddenly said game is a masterpiece. Ya'll are predictable af

OOT is essentially ALTTP in 3D so the formula is still the same just different takes on it.
NES Zelda being open world is contentious. If you consider that open world, couldn't the same be said about Metroid or Yakuza? But ultimately, despite the similar philosophy, ALTTP has much more in common with the NES original than BOTW.

All of the games are great. You have a very nostalgic view of the old games. You romanticize the stories way too much. They really aren’t that deep. With Nintendo it’s always been more about the gameplay. IMO, the only low points of the “breath saga” are the main dungeons. It’s not to say that the old style is better by default, as there are some definite stinkers in the classic games as well, but in general the linear style does just make it feel more like a dungeon.

    • @Mr.Jshawgames93

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say. If you don't feel that way about the stories in classic Zelda games then that's completely fine and I respect your opinion. As I said in the video it's not just about nostalgia. It's about quality over quantity. Yeah there are some dungeons in the classic Zelda's that aren't as good as others. I'm not a fan of the water temple in Ocarina Of Time for example. But I will still take that over any of the dungeons in the breath saga.

I understand that change is a part of life. Although I do think Nintendo could have one team focus on making more games like Tears of the kingdom. While the other team makes a Zelda that's more akin to classic ones like Ocarina Of Time or Wind Waker. I don't want anyone to feel left out. If Nintendo were to do that then no one would be left out. I'm sure a few people are complaining about Echoes of Wisdom. But a lot of people are also looking forward to playing as Zelda as it's not something that is typically done in Zelda games. Realistically there will always be someone who complains. Just gotta focus on the majority of people and what they are saying. I'm glad you can find an equal amount of enjoyment from both versions though.

I far prefer the wild Era. I Started with ww.
Why can't we just let the creators create?
Your all imagining this perfect zelda game that won't exist and doesn't exist
every old zelda game has flaws.
Every new zelda game has flaws
Exploration can be fun for explorations sake even if what we find is a statue that doesn't do anything. thats cool because we found it. or the journey we had to discover it was fun.
ask every Wild era player how they got to deathmountin you could have hundreds of stories. ask the same question about all old zeldas? well there's only one answer unless you brake the game
Story wise I also disagree. the story is clear and communicates what it wants. a story of failure faith pressure acceptance loss tragedy hope.
this stuff isn't even in the subtext witch if yo w ant to read into to can go far deeper. Depths = the past the surface = the present and the sky of course is the future the twin dragons motif on the logo as a sigh of the cycle of zelda
Mario is also going more open. more free more exploratory. how many reviews of bowsers fury say it's a hint to a new Mario coming?
but no Mario fans are demanding to go back to the galaxy style of linear 3d platforming. Why are zelda fans so ad dement on wanting stagnation
you want to be given a tour through hyrule not an adventure.
I have Many flaws with the new games to I'm no shill bit i hate that people are calling for stagnation. Let New directors and new creators create.

Dude, your attempt at humour makes this video almost unbearable to watch. I'm agreeing with your points and you're making a good argument, but dropping in a random accent/strange voice or absolutely dry joke every few seconds, all just for the sake of it, isn't funny. What makes the Water Dragon a "slut bag"? There's nothing clever or relevant about any of these "jokes" that you make and I guarantee you that your video would stand a lot stronger if you didn't add this element of humour. I don't think comedy is your strong suit and you should probably focus more on what you do right, which is making a compelling argument. Keep it simple and focused, and your points alone might even make for some funny irony.
