    A friend of mine and I had the same problem where our Model A's were stalling at a stop. We both spent a lot of time playing with float levels to the point we made it perfect. Still was stalling. While at the Sweet Home Alabama tour I was talking to a very experienced friend of mine from Georgia who has been playing with Model A's for years and he told me to try opening the Gav a little more and see if that fixes the problem. Sure enough that fixed it for my car and my friend's car. The Gav just needed to be opened a little more. A lot of times people hear the gav only should be open 1/4 turn when in actuality it may need more. Thanks for the video Jack !

      Sure, you are just running richer to cover up the extra air that is leaking in.

    Good info Jack. I didn't know that a leak could occur at that fitting.
    A couple of points on this, one being that knowing myself I'd goof-up with the file and cause a warpage instead of getting the sections filed flat. So guys like me can do a safer job by taping sand paper to a piece of glass and then running the part over the sand paper to get it cleaned up. Of course, in this case that would require removing the intake manifold from the exhaust manifold.
    My other point is that, the same engine stalling can occur by a break somewhere in the vacuum line that goes to the windshield wiper motor, or inside the wiper motor itself. The best way I've found to locate vacuum leaks is, while the engine is running spray suspect areas with carburetor cleaner and listen for a change in the engine's RPM's.

      You are correct, but it is not too hard to flatten the manifold flange while on the engine. This is not precision, just a cleaned up, (shinny all over), flange.

      @@JackBahmlll Thanks Jack.
      I love your videos. The only problem is that I've watched all of them. I sure hope you'll make more.

    Great video Jack, I don’t own a Model A, we rescued a 1927 Buick Model 27 two years ago that had been sitting for about 25-30 years however since there is a lack of Pre-War Buick video selection and plenty of Ford related videos of the same era I at least get my “old car fix” by watching them! 😉
    Great job....

    i don't even have a model A, i have an Oldsmobile, it wasn't causing me any problems, but i just now flatened it anyway, didn't even think about it until just now

    Great stuff, Jack. I'm guessing that issue could be made worse by over tightening and warping the flange?

    You don't need new manifold gaskets, do you, after pulling the manifolds off? And shouldn't a good carb to intake manifold gasket take care of any air leaks? But I do appreciate the video, thanks.

    Doesn't the gasket between the carb and intake manifold take care of this?

    • @JackBahmlll
      @JackBahmlll  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only if the two surfaces are flat. Over time, the gasket gets hard and a slight air leak starts that is a big percentage of the total air at idle.

    put a piece of rage in manifold so you can remove filings easy.

    Thanks Jack! After all the work with the file , do i have to install a new gasket?? or can i install the carburator without gasket? Thanx!

    • @JackBahmlll
      @JackBahmlll  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Yes, use a new one. You should keep a bunch of them in your took for you and others. Make sure the whole surface of both flanges are shinny, (Cleaned Up). jack

      Thanks Jack! I will buy a few gaskets. Also the gasket in the middle of the carburator. The big one. Everything is now cleaned up and shinny!
