      +Darrell Batton Just beware that if you follow this video, you'll be making it harder for yourself than it needs to be. There's pretty much nothing in this video that is good advice. Instead, look for the soldering tutorials from PACE Worldwide and EEVblog.

    • @TheBattons
      @TheBattons 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Antonio Tejada What do the other videos have to do with this one have "pretty much nothing" of value? I learned several things from it that I've since confirmed. If anything here has wasted my time, it was your comment. Go pee on someone else's parade.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Darrell Batton: Because *bad* information is worse than none at all, and unfortunately this video has lots of misinformation. You're better off learning *good* technique, which will save you lots of time and heartache down the line.
      This guy keeps his iron WAY too hot (so the solder oxidizes faster, giving you less time to work), he applies far too much solder to the joints, flicking solder off the iron is dangerous... shall I go on? Instead of attacking the messenger, go look at the sources I've recommended and see what proper soldering technique is.

    Great video! Thank you very much.
    It certainly helps having the right tools. Today I tried to change a few caps on my Slingbox HD and even though I thought I had the right tools -- Radio Shack 25w soldering iron and desoldering tool, braided copper, I still couldn't get them off without overheating the board. I think I need a little more heat (40w perhaps) and a better solder sucker. Those rubber ones 'don't' suck compared to those pump-up solder-suckers that I've seen in YT videos. If I get the right tools and use some of your other tricks I should be fine.
    Anyway, thanks again for a very straight-forward and easy to understand tutorial. :thumbs up:

    Solder can be pronounced "Sod-er" in North America leaving the L silent. Since I get an "OMG Yu R pronouncing SOLDER wrong" comment every week, please check these resources, you don't have to take my word for it!

    Click the below link, there is even a speaker icon to play a sample, the lady has somehow left the L silent...

    Something else to mention: if you don't have any other heat sources to shrink your heat shrink tubing, you can use the metal shaft of your soldering iron. I had to do that because I was in a pinch and it worked flawlessly.

    My favorite thing isn't that some English think Americans are speaking English wrong, but that they are speaking it right. If you honestly believe that you aren't speaking English differently then they were 50 to 100 years ago... let alone a thousand.
    Languages evolve and adapt. A distance of 4000 miles will have it evolve and adapt differently.

    Use RMA flux while doing this, always.
    The flux located at the core of the solder is never enough. Just enough is there so the solder wire itself can flow evenly. Still, you should always use more flux.
    (I work in Class 3 for Military and commercial. Flux is your friend.)

    To answer the question someone left as to why fresh solder works to remove old solder.....because solder, when heated and in "liquid" form, is attracted to itself. Just like Mercury,water or any substance in liquid form. Also, when solder is hot, it's easier to get the old solder hot quicker because the heat is spread out over a larger area and so the solder gets attracted to each other.
    Example, if you put a 70 yr. old woman and a 25 yr. old next to each other and have a 70 yr. old man choose with whom to be, HE'LL CHOOSE THE 25yr. OLD! Why? Because she's young,more energetic,easier to get hot,more cute(shinier) and will be able to make him feel young again! As for the 70yr. Old, she'll be dull,slow to get hot,slower on the move and won't be able to make his components work properly. So it'll just ruin his project.
    I hope I've been able to give a clarifying answer to the question.

      It is also the flux in the solder which helps to clean the joint

  • @MghUnit407
    @MghUnit407 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    question: the solder allows current to flow? or does it acts like glue, just holding it together

    • @Electronhacks
      @Electronhacks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      +MghUnit407 Solder is like wire, it allows the electricity to flow.

    • @aliallam9877
      @aliallam9877 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MghUnit407 it is a metal connection so it is conductive

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +MghUnit407 What's interesting is that while soldering is adding a different material (to the copper of the wires), the solder actually slightly dissolves the copper of the wire, creating a strong alloyed joint which is both electrically and mechanically sound. (That said, it's good practice to always design a strong mechanical joining anyway, and not rely solely on the solder for mechanical support. For example, how the wires in this video are twisted together first. You wouldn't just lay them next to each other and have only the solder linking them.)

    Good Video. My only critique is that you are too aware about "comments" for your video. It is sad that people need to worry about trolls and idiots when all you are trying to do is share knowledge and experience. My suggestion would be to just do a good video and disregard what other people say. If you are knowledgeable or are an expert in something, don't let other people interject themselves into your video.

      Todd Bloomingdale In other replies, I've pointed people to the tutorials by PACE Worldwide and EEVblog. I'm not an expert solderer (though I'm better than the guy who posted this video), so why should I make a video when true experts already have superb videos on here? All I am saying -- and this is true -- is that THIS video is absolutely full of bad advice, and that if you want to learn to solder properly, you should look at the videos by PACE and EEVblog instead.
