    Making tallow really is incredibly simple. And we have been loving using this over the past couple of months. Especially for roasting and frying 😋

    Very nice, thank you. I will try this, it is very simple.

    I heard from a homesteader in America that getting the cows butchered during summer (since it’s been warm in Victoria up until now I’d say that counts weather wise) causes the tallow to be that beautiful yellow colour before it solidifies because of vitamin d, or pure sunshine as she put it!

    Wow thank you I am looking at getting a bunch much of tallow from a local butcher to cook up

      It has been so good for frying and roasting. Its a match made in heaven for potatoes.

    Gday. Your hubbie is correct, they are glands. Good call to remove them.

      You are spot on. 😀
      You can tell who does the breakdown and trimming with our butchery around here!

    I have to try that, it's hard to get tallow where I live. Don't know why, it's just not common to cook with tallow here. Buying lard is no problem though

      It is so worth doing. And the solar oven really is perfect for the rendering 😀

    You did a good job, but there was stacks more you could have rendered down, especially because you started with such clean leaf fat, it should have all been pretty much liquid when it was done. Use a slow cooker outside next time, or even a Dutch oven in the oven, when it’s done it will be pure liquid with some dark meat crispies floating. Even using an old tea towel to line your sieve, will eliminate the sediment. When you do it next time, you’ll see the difference & get a lot more. It’s great to use for soap making and as a face cream as well.

      When I took it back outside that second time, as you would have seen very little rendered which is why I thought it done at that stage. But does it start to go really slow to get more at that stage and faster at the start?
      And I will most definitely take on that advice of lining with filter cloth next time. Always still learning 😀

    What brand is your solar oven and where did you purchase it from?

      You might enjoy our solar cooking playlist which can be found on the channel. This has quite a few vids of different cooks, even dehydrating with the solar oven. We have two types, a Suntaste oven and a Sunplicity cooker. This vid was one of our earlier ones, but gives a bit of an overview of them. I bought them through a lovely lady here in Australia who sells them through her company called WONSO.

    Excellent tutorial Rachel. Beautifully rendered. That solar oven sure seems to be worth its weight. Cheers

      Thanks a bunch Lance. All that incredible advice through Australian Homesteaders helped immensely.
      And you are spot on about the solar oven 😀

    I have just found your channel and loved your content. I watch many American homesteaders on TH-cam. I live in Mooroopna near Shepparton Victoria. I live in town and tell my family we have a suburban homestead as I have 7 chooks and a vege garden. Look forward to following you.

      Welcome to the channel Dennyse 👋 I hope you enjoy following along with the things we get up to. We are also in Vic, but in the Dandenong Ranges.

    Hi Rachel, Awesome first time, but if you want your Tallow to stay clear you need to get all the fleshy bits out.

    • @Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus
      @Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Pauline, when you say 'fleshy bits' are you able to give some additional advice? Anything with meat still attached we cut out and the glands. But am I still missing something?

    • @paulinenorris4258
      @paulinenorris4258 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus Hi Rachel, If you get all the fleshy meat bits out it is clearer when it renders, and you don't get the meaty flovour if you want to cook Chicken or do baking. I do two lots if I can't clean it all. One as clean as I can get it and one that we also mixed with the dogs food. I also have a piece of Cheesecloth that I only use for Tallow.
