I just retired in Thailand last month. 64 years old and a retired airline captain from the US. After decades of worrying about the government invading my body in a random drug test, and being a good boy and abstaining for those same decades, it feels so great to be here and, once again, get in touch with 17 year old me.....and partake of the excellent Thai herb!

I am now 68 yrs old and I vividly remember the Thai Buddha sticks we used to be able to score in Melbourne AU in the 70's That fragrant Thai Buddha smell, unique and unlike any other. The stone was pure bliss. As I remember they used to retail for 12 to 15 dollars per stick. Just the best smoke available at the time. Occasionally I would find a seed in one of the sticks and be able to grow a plant from it. Talk about a wicked strain. The buds would grow virtually black. The shade leaves would get you more stoned than some of the buds/hash going around at the time. Fond memories.. I have spent much time in Thailand since 1994 and traveled widely but was always disappointed I could not track down the genuine article. I have not returned since Covid but I am on the cusp or retiring to Thailand hoping and praying the status quo with the laws as they stand remains. Thank you for this informative post as it has give me renewed hope that somewhere I will be able to find an OG Thai Buddha stick maker and be able to drink in that fragrance of my youth. 🙏

People that talk crap on outdoor bud and don’t think there was good weed around back in the day are oblivious. What do they think? Some random “gas” strain came out of nowhere… I’d imagine it was just harder to find but when you did find it it was more unique. I feel that way now and I’m only 35. Stuff is just getting muddled together so much that there is no real unique bud to find.

Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point!

The one thing cannabis never fails at is bringing people together, you showed a more intimate side of what the plant means to the Thai people that many others fail to do & it truly was beautiful to see you interact/get to know the locals. Hearing that small part about the Elder Village Lady's Life really was touching & it also provides a glimpse into the world that many don't often see so thank you for that and please provide more informative content (maybe a documentary?) like this because the community really needs it. I'm 18 and these past few years I've truly come to appreciate the benefits that cannabis can bring to the people of the world. My love is especially concentrated in the growing process and Im currently on my second outdoor attempt with a handful of plants, had popped some beans at 15 but never got to harvest sadly. Grew up in California so was constantly surrounded by it since some family had worked in the industry for a small time, yet As a kid I was always put off by the plant because I also got to personally see the negatives that it can bring. However, as time has passed I've matured a bit & experienced those negatives myself; With those experiences its brought a newfound feeling of respect but also passion that makes me want to strive & use these emotions as fuel to pursue a professional career in this field. Not to make money but instead because its a way to form all these wonderful experiences & really teach people just like you have. The world can do with less bitterness & more of those smiles , sounds of joy, & laughter that were shown in this video. Either way thanks again, this really gave me another boost of motivation & it would be a dream to grow some of my own for you to smoke one day, haha maybe some tips on how to get into the business too bec where I'm at (the lone star yeehaw state ) is kinda rough, The 2018 farm bill has people scramblin lol.

Usually abut 20 or so Thai sticks in a brick, and man let me tell you, it was by far the best sativa strain I've ever had! Not to mention the best tasting! I spent a month trekking in Northern Thailand in the mid 80s. There was a lot of Opium around, and unfortunately many local men in certain villages addicted to Heroin, smoking it in pipes or bongs.
Lots of militias in the forests, passed a few poppy fields (you could tell because they were surrounded by elephant grass), and a low level war going on between various factions, Burmese militias, and the Thai government forces.
I asked around for bud but wasn't able to find any until I found a Karen village that were growers, I bought a small bag of beautiful deep and bright green buds, compacts and a bit sticky. I rolled one up myself and the few there foreigners that were also trekking through, but no one else wanted to smoke, so I ended up finishing off the huge J through a short green bamboo bong I had made myself, with the help of the Kareni guy who got me the bud. I remember lying back and having visual hallucinations for a long time, making cartoon movies in my head. It was by far the most potent and pleasant high I' had ever had, just amazing weed, even compared to the best Humboldt stuff that I had tried a few years before. Good times.

Fort Rucker is the largest helicopter training center in the world so there was a lot of soldiers training and being sent to Vietnam. Some of my female friends were dating some of the soldiers that had just come back from Vietnam and they did have a really good supply of. Hash Thai. Stick , Cambodian weed, Thailand, weed and Vietnamese weed and then there was the old standby of Mexican weed. We would save a lot of the seed and cross the Vietnamese with the Thai weed then take that and cross it with the Mexican weed. It was very fun and interesting to see what you come up with ! Way cool film bro .
I remember my first encounter with Thai Stick . Sometimes in the early 1970s I got a call from my guy that I should come over (indicating that he had gotten something special) . We took care of regular business first....I got 5lbs each of Columbo Gold and Red plus a 1/4 lb of some fine Afghani hash . He went off to get my order together and yelled out from the other room that I should try some of the pin joint in the ashtray . I took 2 hits and was freakin' baked....turned out to be "Stick" ! Wound up snagging a 1/4 lb of them too . I sold the sticks individually for $25 each and had people coming back for more . Sold out in a few hours....and keep in mind that this was in the early 70s when you could get a 4 finger bag of fine Columbo for $30 .
There is not a thing bad about outdoor weed if the grower knows what they're doing !
Again , thanks for the cool video .

There is a bit more to making Thai stick than was shown in this video.
I've smoked Thai stick in the 70's in Australia and lived in Thailand for 6 months of every year in the 80's..and Thai stick is not just squashing buds around a stick then tying it with string or fibers. The Thai stick I scored in the '70's had a high (not a stone) that was medium+ strength, long duration, trippy, a really enjoyable experience and they looked nothing like the bright green, perfect cylinders of dried bud on a stick you see on many TH-cam videos...anyone who had real Thai stick in the '70's knows they were really dense and dark brown/earthy colored and this is due to how they were grown, harvested, (half) dried, compressed, fermented and long cured.
....I had great contacts for ganja when I spent time in Thailand and it was good, much better than the commercial brick weed that was around in 80's Thailand but the 70's Thai stick I smoked had a better high. It's now obvious the best best Thai sticks were harvested when fully mature ( which is about a month or two longer than when you think it's ready lol), grown in the ground, under the sun and were from plants with a great high.
I think the reason why Thai stick was well regarded was not only because they were grown by experienced growers but also how they were dried, packed and cured.
Due to high humidity, harvested plants takes months to fully dry in tropical and sub-tropical regions and that's impractical for lots of reasons for a third world farmer so they developed techniques to overcome this problem. It's my guess that in Thailand they worked out that fermentation or partial fermentation worked best to be able to harvest then quickly pack and sell the ganja as fast as possible while improving the high. Dehumidifiers can be used to dry cannabis but that's just not practical in under developed regions or on a large scale. Heat drying can be used, but this reduces the quality of the high.
I would suggest that '70's era Thai stick was harvested, large leaves and stalks removed then left on the ground to dry for 5 ~7 days (so they are half dry). The branches were trimmed down into budettes and then formed, rolled and tied into Thai sticks. Then packed tightly together into packages of 25 ~ 50 sticks and wrapped tightly in plastic or large leaves so they are airtight. With temps around 32C each day, the sticks are compressed together and sealed and fermentation occurs, after a week the packages are unwrapped, the sticks would have been air dried to lose moisture then resealed for another few weeks then sold to middlemen.
I never saw any Thai stick in the 80's in Thailand and I smoked all day everyday with guys who lived there and were in the ganja export biz ..they said the only time they saw any or heard of any Thai stick was that some guy was rewrapping fresh brick weed into sticks for export because US buyers would pay more for "Thai sticks". I think what happened was that after the Vietnam war was over, ganja farming was discouraged then cracked down by the Thai police from pressure by the Americans and the old ways how to dry and cure were lost or partly lost and so were some of the seed lines that were trippy and strong.
In the 80's foreign tourists started coming to Thailand in larger numbers, Thai ganja was in demand, so Thai gangsters controlled it and from then on ganja was mass produced for money not for the quality of the high...then it largely became musty, seeded brick weed. A majority of '80's Thai ganja was poorly grown, seedy, semi-moldy and had a dull stone ...unless you knew a guy that is ;)
In Malawi, with it's tropical climate similar to Thailand, cannabis is formed into "cobs", wrapped in pliable leaves and tied with string or twine and they fully ferment them similar to the description above.
Fermentation doesn't increase the potency per se but it definitely does improve the quality of the high for long flowering sativas, I think what happens is the some of the terpenes that would normally be lost during air drying are retained or altered in a way that enhances the high.
It also means that a field of ganja can be cut down, processed and sold within a couple of weeks compared to having an acre of bulky branches hanging everywhere and still not being dry enough to pack after a month due to the high humidity which is risky due to cops and thieves.
For best results, it's best to allow your fermented cannabis to stay sealed and allowed to cure for several months, then enjoy it. If the sticks or cobs were really tightly compressed and still had the right amount of moisture in the bud before sealing then the resulting fermented and long cured bud will be hard, heavy and dense more like petrified wood than the normal bud, so you might need a knife to cut off fine slices.
The Thai stick I scored in the '70's was closer in terms of looks, density, color and weight to the bud I now know that was fermented rather than were just compressed buds on a stick. This type of fermentation and the subsequent improvement in the high won't occur if the bud is already dry enough to smoke in a jay, it won't work if water is added to dry bud either. If the bud is in the right moist/dry range but not airtight then mold may occur. After the sticks are wrapped and sealed, then heat (32 ~38C) is used in the first 7 ~ 10 days then unsealed and dried until the exterior of the sticks are dry but still pliable inside (then resealed and long cured).
Fermenting cannabis was redeveloped, modernized and introduced to the world via a cannabis forum 10 or 15 years ago by a poster called "Tangwena" using vacuum sealing. controlled precise temperatures, etc ), he deserves all the credit for this technique. He "back engineered" the Malawi cob making process based on the cobs he used to buy in Africa and from what locals told him about it but he had to sort through all the folklore and miss information (soak in goat's piss, buried in manure etc) .. ..there is a thread (almost 500 pages long!) on IC mag , com "How to make Malawi cobs" that explains this fermentation process in detail with hundreds of photos and posts from lots of growers who have tried this technique, it's worth reading if you're interested in learning this technique so you can make real Malawi cobs and even Thai Stick (not green, dry bud on a stick) ...but you also need to grow an Equatorial strain/landrace that flowers for 5+ months for best results. You can use this fermentation process on modern hybrids that flower for only a few months, but the improvement in the quality of the high is minimal compared to fermenting long flowering varieties.
    Happy growing!

You have underestimated the value of allowing the flowers to FULLY ripen on the plant!!!
      It is extremely common today.
Fermentation has its effects, but nothing in comparison to the above.
      I include terpenes in that.
The Thai stick was MUCH better when the Vietnam war was ongoing.
Some Hawaiians did much better than others, with the same genetics.

@@toowiseforyou "You have underestimated the value of allowing the flowers to FULLY ripen on the plant!!!"
Huh? I'm not sure if this is directed at me? If so, please have a reread of what I posted, I specifically mentioned making sure to fully flower these tropical sativas.
      Here's what I wrote ...
"the best best Thai sticks were harvested when fully mature ( which is about a month or two longer than when you think it's ready lol)".
I've grown plenty of Thai plants (years ago) .....at harvest, if you wait until fully mature and grow them right, the plants should be leafless with hard, small buds. In the northern hemisphere harvest will be January ~ March. Most Thai (and other equatorial strains) photos I see online are harvested a month or two too early...then they complain about airy buds with low potency.
The downside to growing Thais is hermaphroditism and the very long flowering duration. Male flowers can appear on female plants early, in the middle or heart breakingly in late flowering.....and can only be grown outdoors in the tropics or sub-tropics as they will flower for 4 ~ 5 months.
Long flowering strains show the best results from this fermentation/curing process.
      Happy growing!

This video is so wonderful. Bringing people together. Only thing I miss in the video is the role music adds to the journey with the plant in these cultures. Thanks for sharing this visit to a magic people and place.

Never seen Thai sticks, but in the 80s-90s in the San Francisco Bay Area we got this Thai that came in coffee cans. Pressed and golden brown. No seeds.1 hit would rip your throat and make your eats feel like there were ringing too. The original 1 hitter quitter

Thai sticks... yum yum! I smoked some in Madison Wis. in 73. Went to a Jeff Beck concert. Poor Jeff, I didn't remember a dang thing. I love how Thai sticks are self contained, NO PLASTIC BAGS.

Whats so touching for me is that there was so much opresion against canabis but all the growers in the world preserved the plant by cultivating love of it. That what is its ultimate teaching.
Thanks to that we can use and enjoy it all over the world. Peace and love to all the growers of the world.
