The info shared regarding there being lots of hermaphroditism in strains in the US is not wholly accurate any more. Legalization here has spread/increased strains that differ much more in heritage and genetics now, as opposed to even just 5 years ago. It is not correct that Herms are a big thing here now as they were in the past.

It seems like every plant that you looked at in this video, has seeded.
Why ?

I just got back 11 days ago from Thailand and visited greenhouse dispensary in China town. I had alot of green house cannabis in the north as well. Thailand has so much great smoke and Green house was one my favorite places to sit. Great show.

Yes.😂It is also used for food and clothing. Japan's cannabis has a deep history.But it's not a legal country yet. It was controlled by GHQ after the war.

I used to see some Thai plants in the 80's that grew naturally without a leading top cola...the plants naturally kept low, wide and grew more like a creeping vine than a classic landrace tall "teepee" shaped sativa. The branches were very thin and flexible with very long node spacing the plants were later to kick into flowering mode than other classic Thais and very long flowering, they would mature a month or more later.. these were low yielding as the buds were tiny and spaced apart on the branches (and this was in the tropics) I guess their seeds were not selected for growing and that trait is lost or rare now....but the high from the best of these was very good.
I(n regards to the most Thais I grew back then, it used to be (and probably still is) that to grow one seedless female Thai to full maturity, you really need to start 20 bag seed Thais in early Spring...a few won't germinate, a few will be runts, around a third (sometimes less, rarely more than half) will be males and out of the remaining plants there will be a few or many that will hermy, some hermies will show early, some will appear in mid flowering and heartbreakingly some will appear in late flowering...from memory, many females will first show sex in September, gradually start flowering in October and will mature in February and March. But you can start seedlings anytime from Spring to late Summer, but you need to have the right latitude, climate and patience to get great results.
Out of 20 or 30 females, there will be one or two that will stand out with a special high that keeps you coming back which will make it all worthwhile.

Back in the '80s I grew hydroponically indoors. I got my seeds from the Netherlands. It was called creeper. It was a lot like what you described as far as the physical aspects of the plant were. Had a really good buzz too.
@@RobFomenko The creeper Thai plants I grew came from Thai bag seed in Thailand. Out of the hundreds I grew, I remember only seeing a few examples of this creeper phenotype, there were also some examples that looked like they were part creeper and part classic tropical sativa with a central cola but the bud were grape sized or slightly larger. If a typhoon blasted the area where they were growing, all of the Dutchies and other modern hybrids and Thai/hybrid crosses would be laying in the mud, many of the classic Thais got beat up too, but not these creepers, you could grow these in a wind tunnel x sauna x blasted with a fire hose and they would still be fine..from memory, the leaves were smaller than the classic Thai sativas.
.by the way, for those who may be confused of the word "creeper", it has two meanings..it was often a way of describing a high that starts off like you're not high then over the next 20 minutes or so builds up and bee-atch slaps you as you realize you're off ya face. The Creeper Thai I wrote about above describes the way the plant grew..it was quite unique, wiry, bushy and spread low, without a main central stem, it was very easy to bend and train. I didn't see anything like it in any of the hundreds of Thai plants shown growing in this video.
@@user-gs3tq6bx2u yeah the creeper I grew was due to its spreading out not the buzz you got from it which was still quite nice. The buds were fairly small. But oh so fragrant.
yep thats the old thai i remember that had a very woody and minty taste and the thai sticks also had a bit of spice in the notes on the inhale. super head high... my fave plant for high but not really for taste. never see it these days coz of the size and spacing and yeild to space ratio in all directions plus the flowering time never ended on those. my mate grew one for a laugh but it never reached finish and stayed in the stretch period for ever. could probably flower 4 indica hybrids in that time that had more bag appeal and taste but alas not anywhere near the high and not as safe in the body to smoke all day. every now and again somebody claims to have thai stick in the uk but its usually always turning out to be seedy bricks from laos and not very good
Yep i grew it last harvest. It seems like what you describe. I asked in a fb group and they say it was a thai sativa. The buds are also small. Like a pop corn only.

@@Wayzor_ There are parts of Japan where hemp still grows wild.....I've heard you can catch a light buzz from it. The thick rope that surrounds the raised Sumo fighting area is made from Japanese hemp plants.
There is apparently a “well known Japanese” cultivated strain called Shiatsu Kush.

@@nocomment1469 There are a lot of small towns in the middle of nowhere. Depending on where you live is what kind of weed you can get. Only in the main cities will you find skunkies. Everywhere else is outdoor locally grown strains. In my own little town, there are about three or four strains and their crossovers.
I'm from NZ and I'd love to show them around but no land races here sadly. Very good old-school Asian and South American genetics still about though, not to mention all the expected American and Dutch cultivars too and a deep history of Pacific cannabis culture and a perfect climate for growing trees outdoors. Legal medical now but legacy market still reigns supreme.

You guys have to come to germany next year ... we are allowed to homegrow now and we have a lot of old landraces coming out of the Guerilla Grow Shadow just now...I know an old Lady growing weed since 50 years and I guess with a little research you will find even older landraces. @@PhatRobsOils i know what you mean... landraces might be the wrong word, but we have a lot of people growing theire own strains since decades. Mostly varieties of the oldschool strains and adapted to the clima over the years. I have seeds from that old Lady in a little box with an handwritten label: Purpel Thai, Nothernlight Mix. That Lady alone has cultivated them for decades. I would call that a quite stable race.

The plants I saw in the fields and the plants they were trimming in this video all seem to need another month or two more before they are fully mature and ready for harvest......the difference between a plant with a nice head high and one with a trippy, hours long "experience" is the difference between cutting down the plant early or when it's really mature.
The best advice I ever got about growing Thais is when you think it's ready, wait another month lol and it's true..but, hey, that's the difference between growing for the high or growing for the cash..it's also the difference between being experienced and inexperienced ..between being patient and impatient .
But many of these growers are relatively new to it, but they've farmed for generations so we will see big improvements in the quality of their bud in years to come as they learn and understand the growth and flowering cycles and the plant's needs better and then are paid more for bud that is closer to the legendary bud from the 70's Thai stick and not just brick weed.

You might be right.......but with only two years experience, every plant in the fields were lightly seeded (with hermie pollen!) and they seemed as if they were harvested a month or more too early from what I could see....so I don't think so, but hey, I wasn't there, I didn't smoke them and it's only my opinion.
Unlike you, I don't judge cannabis by it looks, smell, taste, structure, color etc, i judge the quality of the ganja by how good the high is but I can tell by looking through this monitor I can make an educated guess that every single plant in that video was cut too early based on my previous growing experience with Thai plants. If you base maturity of a tropical sativa the same way you judge when a 8 week hybrid is ready you will end up with light heady high, it's nice but wait another month or more and the high becomes something that you will remember forever. Most Thai plants will flower in bursts of growth, they will drop almost all of their leaves and the buds will be resiny and tight when close to being ready to cut.
I used to grow guerrilla style in the bush for personal stash when I was younger and "bullet proof", but I don't grow any more due to the harsh penalties where I live...you can only run the gauntlet so many times, so you either stop or get caught, I chose the former.

@@user-gs3tq6bx2u whoa there pump those brakes. Great weed stands out for sure, but "remember forever" is a bit of a hyperbole. Ill always remember my first week smoking, because that was generally lifechanging at 21. Other than that, i smoke way too much to remember a good high. It all eventually blends especially with 90% thc distillate.

It is convenient only when the bud is medium. Farmers don't have technology anymore, they plant naturally, they don't use chemicals.

At minute 20.00 I think there is a potential misunderstanding about the new law because it makes seems that is something already active. Actually the answer was referred to the future possible proposal of a law. At the moment the growing licence is at 3.000 baht wich is fair. To increase this at 50.000 is a plan of a future law.
##-We ask to the government to keep things as they're and dont make more difficult for the farmers
I'd love to seeo Strain Hunters go to Reunion and check out Zamal and other local strains (before they are watered down by the introduction of Dutch and Cali genetics like in so many other places). I've grown out Zamal seeds in the tropics and the high from the best of them will make you rise off the ground like you're on a magic carpet ride...very trippy and they taste like carrots, they're very unique.
By the way the best Thais I've smoked was a trippy, technicolor high that affects your vision like you're in a cartoon, it's a fun high...but you won't get that type of high when you cross it with a fast Dutchie or from smoking Thai brick..but you will if you grow enough pure landrace Thais and allow them to fully mature (which is when the plant has been flowering under the tropical sun for 5+ months then slow cured for another 3 ~ 6 months...Thais usually drop all their leaves, lose color and the small buds and budettes become hard and resiny if you grow them right...if you pick a Thai when it's green, airy and lightweight, then you're doing it wrong and that's why so many Western growers say Thais and other tropical landrace buds are airy and weak.
And Thais also very easily drop their seeds when fully formed (they evolved this trait due to the climate and the long flowering duration) so care must be taken when breeding them, especially with lightly seeded Thais that have been pollenated in early flowering..it's best to fully seed a lower branch only, so it can be covered in a mesh to catch them when they fall).
These Thai cash croppers will get to regret growing hybrid/Thais when they have a bad (wet/humid/strong winds etc) end of growing season as the tropical rains and wind will make them fall over and/or get mold which can happen every 4 or 5 years or so. I grew some Thais crossed with modern hybrids that I lightly seeded and the seeds germinated in the buds that were a month from harvest, it's not common, but it can happen when it's unseasonably rainy and humid for weeks at a time. The pure Thais I grew alongside them were unaffected as they have been selected and evolved with bendy,. wiry, branches so typhoon winds won't snap branches or topple whole trees into the mud and the buds are not super dense so water doesn't get trapped and mold occurs when it's overcast and rainy for weeks at a time. What these cash croppers should do is also grow some pure Thais in case of a bad season.

re : brick weed.......the best way to process commercial Thai bud into bricks so the end product is not a crappy, harsh smoke is to re-trim the bud and remove every single seed, stem and leaf, even the really tiny stems before pressing it into bricks.... try to do it so only the calyxes remain, it's a slow, tedious job but it's worth it. This will reduce weight by as much 30% or 40% or even 50% and will take the trimmers a long time to do it thoroughly but the smoke will be much smoother and will command a much higher retail price.
The problem with commercial brick weed is that if the bud is perfectly dry it doesn't press into a brick form and stay that way which is no good for transport , so what they sometimes do is press bud that is not fully dry which can result in musty smells, mold and a harsh taste...to fix this problem, they need to fully dry the bud then lightly spray the loose bud with a light mist of alcohol which will prevent mold and help the brick stay solid and compact after it is pressed into bricks.
This extra trimming might not be worth it right now for cash croppers, but as soon as production ramps up and prices drop with excess bud entering the market, the bud that is the best quality will sell for a higher price and sell much faster.
If you're in Thailand on holidays and come across some brick weed, do yourself a favor and sit down with a pair of fine scissors and spend the time to trim the bud so every single stem and leaf is removed and you will notice the difference in improvement in the taste, lack of harshness and reduction in phlegm production you get from smoking dirty old brick weed..and it will be stronger because you not smoking all that non-psychoactive plant matter (stems, bits of leaf etc).
By the way, I haven't been in Thailand since the early 90's but I spent about 6 months of every year in the 80's there and could speak basic Thai then and I thought I had forgotten it but it amazed me that I could understand most of what the Thais were saying in this video.

You're kind of right. Natural tobacco isn't as cancerous as cigarettes and rolling tobacco. Real one has less shit
re : Thai stick........it's not just Thai bud tied to a stick, there's much more to it than that.
I think that the Thai sticks from the 70's were processed with a special technique (that is not that different to the way Malawi cobs are made except they weren't individually wrapped) ...they were harvested, half dried, tied to sticks, bunched together tightly, sealed airtight in plastic or leaves, fermented for a week or two (with heat), air dried for a few hours or a day until the exterior is dry (but the interior is still pliable) then resealed and long cured.
This is why these 70's Thai sticks are denser, harder and looked and smelled different to Thai bud and this is why the high from Thai stick is remembered today ...no one finds anything memorable about brick weed but both Thai stick and Thai brick weed came from the same genes, the difference was largely due to fermentation in airtight conditions (which prevents mold). Brick weed, on the other hand is not fermented and that's why it smells musty as mold needs some oxygen to develop.
I wonder if any of the old growers in Thailand still know how to do this? The problem is that I presume this technique stopped being done due to police crackdowns in the early 80's on dirt poor Isaan farmers (you can thank the US DEA who pressured the Thai government for that) and then Thai gangsters took over the business and just pressed heavily seeded (hermie prone) ganja into bricks (because it's all about quick cash not the high isn't it!)..so it's been over 40 years since then and they've probably forgotten, or those around today were too young then to really know the finer details about moisture content, temperature etc of this technique or those who did know have sadly passed away with that knowledge ....coupled with the fact that all Asians tend to keep trade secrets secret so the technique wasn't common knowledge or written about and is probably lost (which is why we don't see real Thai stick now even though growing is not criminalized).
By the way this fermentation process doesn't increase the potency, but it does enhance the quality of the high....the other advantage was that plants could be harvested, semi-dried for 3 or 4 days then processed making them compact and easier to conceal while they cured, so they didn't have lots of trees hanging around for weeks until they were dry enough to sell which was dangerous due to police busts or theft. Buds in the US or Europe can be snap dry in a week after harvest but in the tropics and sub-tropics, it's not unusual for plants to still be pliable and too wet to smoke in a jay a month or more after harvest due to the high humidity, so the above Thai stick fermentation technique overcame this slow drying problem and more importantly, the high was enhanced.
I don't know why the high is enhanced with this technique, but I suspect it's due to how this controlled fermentation changes some terpenes and/or prevents the loss of some terpenes and this enhances the high. Once a bud has dried or is too dry it won't work, even if you re-wet the bud, there will be no improvement in the high.
Fermenting really works well with long flowering sativas, there's a noticeable improvement in the high, but this improvement is much less noticeable with shorter flowering modern hybrids.
Where are you. i'm from thailand. I have thai chocolate 2 month fermented. in thailand it hard to find cure with fermented technique most of them are cured in jars.

I've smoked so much of ur weed in Dutchy land but I've found out that the last four years I haven't seen a decent quality weed in AMS still looking ur arjans strawberry haze was boss seed plus ur super shining silver haze and but the stoned feeling just doesn't feel the same any more no were near as much thc on don't know what's happened but I don't think the prices match the quality of the weed either to pricey
They breed it with mother og plant, which doesn't have the secondary cannabinnoids that get you really high.

I remember the first time I was handed a thin matchstick joint of Thai Stick. It was in the early 70's. We all joked about the futility of trying to get a group of over 6 people high with that tiny thing. Two sippy tokes later and I not only forgot where I was but also, how I got there!
