Superhero Films - Misfits of Science (1985)

It's 1985 and the NBC Television Network is enjoying great success with a slate of highly popular and successful shows. Recently appointed network president Brandon Tartikoff is credited with turning NBC around, but there are a few shows that just didn't catch on with audiences - one being Misfits of Science.
An eclectic group of young misfits find themselves with extraordinary superpowers. Led by goofy scientist Dean Paul Martin they form a team and battle crime every week. Or at least that was the plan. Misfits of Science would only last fifteen episodes and would eventually be cancelled.
I go back to 1985 and check out the short-lived show that starred Mark Thomas Miller, Kevin Peter Hall and a young-up-and-comer actress by the name of Courtney Cox. Let's check out Misfits of Science!

Johhny B and his retro look, coupled with the use of Wayfarer sunglasses and modern Nike high tops, made him just the coolest character ever to a 12 year old kid. The destructive lightning bolts shooting from his hands helped as well.
I loved this show as a kid and watched it faithfully
I've been marathoning this show with a set of DVDs I picked up at a comic con about 10 years ago. Loved it then, and I still love every minute of it now.
I had over 2000 DVD's and I would of LOVED to have that! Well done for even finding it! And yeas John it "never gets old" and is 100% better than any of the crap on tv today- I actually thought it was really funny as well!
I recently ordered the DVD set from Germany. Seems it was never released in the U.S. but the German version does have the English audio. Fortunately I own an all region DVD player, so that's not an issue. I loved this show as a kid.
I loved this show so much as a kid. I adore it now. Someone needs to reboot this show. Nowadays, it would be huge !

I loved this show. They moved the time around and I was always looking for it then it was gone.
This show was my favorite when I was 11 .Back then it was ahead of its time as far as good SFX on a superhero show .
As a kid I thought it awesome
Now in 2024 it’s the 80s science trilogy
The guy can’t imagine people watching Dallas would be the same people who’d want to watch this show? Well, I loved both and have all the DVDs for both!

Firstly let me say thank you for finally getting this uploaded to TH-cam, and for doing such a great job with this review. But I have to disagree with your conclusions. I LOVE this show. Misfits of Science & Street Hawk are my favorite US shows from the eighties. I'm glad to see you included the scenes of Stetmeyer trying to show the Humanidyne board who the Misfits are, but you omitted one crucial scene. Stetmeyer turning to the camera and saying "They didn't get it". And that's Misfits. You get it or you don't. Most people don't, but for those of us that do... I can't tell you how much I LOVE this show!
That's cool. I know the show has a devoted fanbase, but it just never really clicked with me. The highlights are too far and few between. I wonder if the show lasted longer they would have introduced newer misfits down the road, expand the roster or at least have some recurring guest star misfits. Oddly enough my favorite character was the superhero-less Dr. Billy. He was one of those cool, wiseass, funny characters that I'd say 'Oh I want to be that guy!'.
Totally random but awhile back I was watching one of the Matt Helm movies and Dean Paul Martin showed up in a scene with his teen band in a scene. Immediately I saw them and thought 'hey there's a young Dr. Billy!'.

This actually seems like a precursor to the superhero shows and movies of today: superheroes who don't wear costumes, being somewhere between silly and serious in terms of tone, superheroes who have personality flaws, lots of wisecracking dialogue, etc.

I loved this show as a kid Wish they had it so I can just buy it on Vudu or something wish they would’ve made more episodes I was so upset when my mother told me they canceled the show I was so sad and I remember that back then…..😢 And I liked minimal too And if I can find all the old stuff that’s what I normally watch it it’s 2023
I looooovvved this show as a kid. I was just 9 though and barely remember it. I only remember one part where they were all dressed up at some kind of party and the electric guy had to go outside to release some electricity. And I remember the girl levitating the credit card off the table. Surprisingly, you showed both those scenes, lol. I seem to remember they didn't use their powers quite enough for me. I'm normally against this kind of thing but I wouldn't mind if they remade this show lol.
Kinda sounds like the episode where Johnny B. has to out run a "6M$" spy.
I remember watching the pilot when it first came out. I enjoyed it and Johnny was my favorite character. I watched the series and I agree the show did not live up to its potential but I still liked the characters enough to keep watching. (do not remember to many episodes though) Was there one with a Bionic Man parody? As I typed this comment I got vague memories of an ego maniac that Johnny outran.
You should have watched it back in the 80's. It wasn't "hackneyed" back then. It was one of my favorite shows at the time. I was also a fan of shows like Firefly and Now and Again. Not to mention The Tick. All canceled too soon.
same. I loved Misfits, Greatest American Hero, etc, etc. some of them dont hold up when I go back and watch them, but there's a lot of these episodes on TH-cam and still fun to watch.
I put this show in the same categories as those too. I also add in "Sledge Hammer!"
V - The Series had aired prior to it on NBC Fridays in the '84-'85 season, I think executives were trying to reach the younger audience when they paired Misfits of Science along with Knight Rider to beat Dallas on CBS.

As a kid, tv shows that asked the question "what if?" were great. What would you do if you had these abilities? It was nice not having everything you watched on tv not have to be that serious, and having issues didn't mean there had to be something wrong with you
This was my favourite tv show when I was little. I've been trying forever to get a copy of more than just the pilot (which I have on VHS). How do you watch all the episodes? Where can I find them?

It is available on DVD at Amazon from Germany. You'll need an all region DVD player to play them, but they're about the same price as regular DVD players. I bought one many years ago, because a lot of shows I liked weren't released on DVD in the U.S. but were in other countries.
I loved this show, and Tim Krings other super hero show "heroes" another flaw with ratings was depending on following the watching habits of families named Neilson. a better system would have been the Smith or Jones rating system.

So, is the X Men movies' Quick Silver portrayal inspired in The Misfits of Science's Johnny B.?
Pretty sure it's the other way around. Quicksilver debuted in the comics in 1964. I am really surprised Marvel didn't sue the show.

i remember this show as a kid I looked forward seeing it they should remake it and try it again but yeah with better writer's 80s show come back something to think about
Frank Plasencio isn't going to happen, almost every remake they do now bomb bug time, still trying to figure if prom night remake takes place DURING prom night, and of course the killer isn't even ine of the girls brother😧😧😧😧😧😧🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

You put a show up against a megahit show proves that the powers that be want it to fail. Establish the show and then put it against the megahit as counter programming.
