  • Kevin Peter Hall had one of the coolest careers of the 1980s-famous for playing both the bloodthirsty alien Predator and the gentle sasquatch Harry in 1987-but then there's also the shrinking scientist, the escaped mental patient, and an undercover cop! Hope you enjoy this deep dive into his filmography!

Misfits of Science sounds like the perfect opportunity for a modern remake (and I hate remakes).
    - The scientists are the good guys
    - The scientists are "ordinary" people (meaning they're not made out to all be hollywood nerd stereotypes, they're given human desires and personalities)
    - The less progressive aspects of the original make room for improvement
Only one problem with a remake. No Kevin Peter Hall :(

Damn, this video was made for me. A loving tribute to a creature performer, an exploration of how to express emotion and character through special effects (something i really think about with my future movies), a ton of good movie recs, AND you even squeezed in my fear of dying before 30? That does it, I'm a patron now.

I watched _Predator 2_ for the first time last year, and while I found some of it's ideas interesting (it's tonal shift halfway through especially was unexpected and fun); it also (in my opinion) has terrible pacing issues. The film felt way too long while somehow every scene felt rushed. It's only 1 hour 48 minutes, but feels like a 3 hour movie condensed into 2 hours. The first _Predator_ was way more tight and well-paced. It knew how to take it's time without overstaying it's welcome. And the fact that _Predator 2_ is largely retreading the plot of the previous film but in a shoddier way makes the pacing issue hard to ignore. It would have faired better if it didn't have the first film to compare to.

Years ago, early internet, I tried looking more into who Kevin Peter Hall was. Sadly, finding out anything was difficult. All I really knew was that he was The Predator twice and Harry. Finding images of him outside of film was even more difficult. I couldn't even find interviews at that time. This was a great video, and you've earned a subscriber. I've always felt like the Predator hasn't been right without Kevin in the suit. Like he brought so much to that character.

On that stopover on social justice of the 80s, and 90s as well. My takeaway is in applying it to present times, is to have patience, to be encouraging when it's clear that there is an atrempt to represent and further what is the standard in the selected media. Just because a piece of media hasn't managed that 100% check all the boxes progressive groundbreaking ideal doesn't mean it's not a genuine attempt or even that maybe it didn't just get lost in too many hands in the jar. It's good to give the benefit of the doubt, especially with smaller lower budgets when they might not have access to people who've lived it. It takes time for media to reflect what people know, and for society to change too. Just because it's not changing fast enough to reflect your views doesn't always mean it's not changing as fast as it's capable of.

My mom showed me Harry & The Hendersons as a kid and my imagination was captured by Hall's performance. I'd argue that it's the best suit work ever done before the advent of Andy Serkis' techniques and is probably still better than that considering that CGI ages, unlike practical effects. It's a surprisingly beautiful film, even through the 80s family movie cheese.

I didn't know who Kevin Peter Hall was but I really enjoyed learning about him with you, it's such a shame that he passed before he could fully actualize his career. Also, just as a fun fact you may enjoy, the screenwriter for Harry and the Hendersons (Bill Martin) also wrote one of my favorite Harry Nilsson songs, "Fairfax Rag," which is also one of the best songs I've ever heard about prostitution lol! (Also also, I think you would make a great video on Nilsson's film "The Point!" I loved the "Misifts of Science" when it aired in my youth (and still it took me years to figure out the Kevin Peter Hall was also the Predator, but I was probably to young to watch that movie anyways :-) ). It had quite an Chostbusters meets X-Men-Vibe and way had more diverse and better special effects than any other superhero series I had seen before (My younger self was soooo blown away :-) ). I got the boxed set the moment it was published. A shame to hear it was a bigger hit here in parts of Europe than in the US.

The toilet scene in Predator 2 is astonishing, from probably the best non-verbal acting I've seen to the cinematography and the direction (the storyboards would make a great comic I'm sure). I love that film

while I do find the Pussyface theory a stretch, I every so often did think to myself about how hilarious it would be if decades after the movie came out, that the Predator from the first movie would be confirmed/revealed to be a female Yautja, and all the dudebro fans would completely short-circuit

So Alien vs Predator is a 2 hour movie about a vagina face alien against a penis head alien?🤔
      Interesting

Glad I looked him up after a Google wormhole stemming from watching Prey and rewatching the first two films in the Predator franchise. Thanks for highlighting the art and the artist with this incredibly thoughtful and entertaining tribute to the man 🙌🥲

Hey, not trying to be rude, but if I hadn't noticed that this was your channel, I probably wouldn't have watched the video because the thumbnail/title wasn't particularly appealing. Of course, I am watching because I love your videos, but I almost missed it.

Trust when I say there's a lot of similar editing in the 80s, Misfits of Science. Yeah I felt sad when you shared about his death, especially after recently hearing about his marriage and being reminded of films that grew up with. We definitely had a recorded VHS copy of Preditor from the tv. Funny, VHS. Thanks for this, it was great to get to know, yes, the man behind the mask. My favourite short clips was when he jumped from seeing that huge tongue come towards him for the film, Harry and the Hendersons.
