There's nothing more relaxing than Brocky casually thrashing a car with his arm on the window sill, having a chat!

I was only 17 and watched this on the lounge nursing a massive hangover after our footy presentation the night before. Even as a Ford fan, I was happy for to Grice win. I'm from Mailtand and he was from Cessnock, so not too far away. I've met Gricey a couple of times and he's a real down to earth guy. He had a business in Hawks Nest where I'd go for the holidays and he gave my friend and I a free soft drink as our order was taking a while.

Thank you thank you thank you for leaving Mike Raymond's opening in this clip. They really add to the presentation of the individual events. It's a shame so many clips don't have them. Whilst I don't agree with a lot of the things he did behind the scenes, I did enjoy his commentary immensely, even when his biases were on display.

Les Small won this race, and he doesn't get enough credit for it. Holy smoke did Grice's Commodore have some grunt, blew away every other Commodore in a straight line, and in Europe, the Mobil Commodores couldn't get near it.

Really enjoyed this blast from back in the day. Those old V8 engines sound absolutely gorgeous especially on downshift. Brocks' commentary lap was great stuff. Great upload 🤘😎🤘

he hit the tyre wall at bridgestone bridge at at least 200kph
ended up in the back seat and died from massive internal bleeding from the whiplash - i remember when the extracted him from the car - the poor guy was pale as a ghost

Loving some of that background music - hits of the day by Lena Pelay, Steve Winwood, I'm Talking, Machinations, etc. Equally legendary to the cars and drivers.

The main 1.6-2.5 class rival for the Mercedes 190E 2.3 16 in the UK was the Escort Turbo in the rest of Europe it was the BMW 323i/325i

Geejus I'm 46 now and I can still remember watching all day and hoping for the chickadee commodore would win even though I knew nothing about racing except my dad was supporting them because he was a rally driver a privateer no sponsors and he was driver mechanic pit crew you name it and he done it on very limited funds and I saw the sacrifices he made ( selling his boat and caravan ), spending long nights out in the workshop and he never won anything not even the local chook raffle so I understood that the chickadee car and team put in so much effort . And it felt good to see the little man give it to them.

TYSON CROW: I remembered he once owned the Chickadee factory til it was sold to Ingram’s in 2006. We live up the hill behind the complex and can smell the cooking in the night air. His car was on display at a car repair shop at West Gosford for a week in 2006 celebrating 20 years since that win. When the now extinct Gosford Car Museum featured a history of Bathurst cars, the Chickadee Commodore was on display.

I remember this race because of the sad race accident that claimed a life and the first time I'd seen a Sierra there. It was odd how the Sierra dropped out early yet by the next year they were dominating.
Seriously good race car they turned out to be.

    • @Steveaustin007
      @Steveaustin007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The Sierra in this race was a XR4Ti 2.3 litre 8 valve engine - only had 2 weeks to develop the car which was not designed to race like the Cosworth 16valve twin cam RS & RS500 was the car. Built to the rules at the time to be a winner.

Does anyone know what the second piece of music is? The one where the narrator is explaining about the race and competitors. I alway loved that music since 86 but don’t know what it is.

Reverse H pattern 5 speed, so 2-3/4-5 are straight line shifts (and leaves 1st out on a dogleg for starts only etc)
Some on-board from same 80s era BMW'S are the same (Getrag)

Mighty Vk. Still own a 308 Vk Calais and my first has been passed to my brother as a keepsake, both in mint condition. Nothing beats cracking the old secondarys open on a sunny day and smelling fuel. Mmmm

Big boost only good for qualifying not for long distance races at that time.
