The 1981 James Hardie 1000 was the 22nd running of the Bathurst 1000 touring car race. It was held on 4 October, 1981, at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst and won by Queenslander Dick Johnson with co-driver John French.

Dick Johnson is a scholar and a gentleman AND (perhaps rather obviously) along with Peter Brock, one of the best drivers we’ve ever produced in Australia.
That Bartlet lap was one if not the best looking and sounding laps in the history of Bathurst back in the days when it was worth watching ! and what was that f'ing noise in the background ...

The 1981 Bathurst 1000 was the very first time that The Great Race was stopped after a very nasty crash involving multiple cars. This was stopped after 122 laps, whilst the 1992 Bathurst 1000 race was stopped after 143 laps.

Peter Williamson's Celica was the first car to have a racecam installed as part of a trial that occurred two years prior I am led to believe. One of motorsports and channel 7's greatest achievements in television broadcast.

Well, here's my 'bragging' moment. My dad's sister Marie, married a man named John French. As a kid, I would go to their Dealership in Brisbane, seeing all the amazing vehicles, and pouring through books of the history of Racing, with photos of the evolution of cars.
He would invite us down to the tracks when testing, and just once I was allowed into a car, and he punched the gas, pasting me to the seat, scaring the heck out of me.
Then we watched the '81 race and were very worried when the big crash happened. Later, we partied at their house with a lot of drunken adults about. Dick Johnson was there for a bit, but I never knew him.Thanks for reading.

That background noise in the audio that sounds a bit like a sick cyclone warning is a bit howyagoin. It seems to be from the chopper and the at the top. Maybe something to do with how it was transmitted back to the OB trucks .

I worked at Peter Warren Ford,Liverpool,through the eighties as an apprentice,then trade mechanic,and changed the big man's seat frame on all his Fairlanes many times.
The big fella would bend the seat-back metal frames.

Except those hot head mounts cost you around a hundred grand. Then another hundred for a 2.5ghz microwave system and another mill for the jetranger to transmit the signal. The camera is the easy bit.

As a nascar fan, I've heard of Rodney Combs when he was racing NASCAR Trucks and (xfinity) Busch Gran national series. I never thought he took part of the Bathurst 1000.

Miguel Sanchez the sound you hear is the polarity from the electrics of the car, they needed more condenses or reverse the polarity of the car, same as putting a car stereo in an old car

In 1997, Seven lost the rights to the ATCC to Network Ten, but still broadcast the Australian Super
Touring Championship until the series' demise in 2001. In 2003, Seven Sport broadcast the Nations Cup and
V8 Utes, before Network Ten won the rights to broadcast the V8 Utes in 2005 after the collapse of
organising body Procar Australia.
From 2007 until 2014, Seven regained the rights to the ATCC, which was now known as V8 Supercars. The
commentary team included Neil Crompton, Mark Skaife and Mark Larkham. From 2015, Seven Sport broadcasts
the Bathurst 12 Hour endurance race.

And the long straight was a real test of reliability.. thinking of how many cars has passed down it safely, and one didn't.. that's not the track's fault

Yep. The pileup that cut the race short. Bartlett was one of the guys injured. Wonder who the other guy was that had to be stretchered? John Harvey had a bit of bad luck in that race. He was a great touring car legend. Sadly passed away in recent months due to ill health. Rest in peace John! Shame we don't have trackside cheerleaders anymore. PC brigade and other left looneys ruined that idea. Still have the grid girls though. Some of the commentary from back then would be deemed inappropriate now by some of the PC looneys although it wouldn't have been inappropriate at all anyway, then and now. How times have changed.

In the early 1980's popular music was moving from New Wave to the softer New Romantic sounds. This is irrelevant, however, as Australian TV networks were a good 5 years behind popular trends. That's why the music sounds like a cross between orchestral disco and the underscoring of an episode of The Streets of San Francisco.

Even though the 1981 Australian Touring Car Championship only had Brock or Johnson winning all the rounds. In 2018 the Supercars Championship had 12 different winners over 30 races. Also in 2016 had 14 different race winners over 29 races. Meaning half the races had a different winner. Shall I Continue? Think about the Mr Phillips.

Gibson made headlines of her own when she was involved in the accident that stopped Bathurst in 1981. It was one of the most famous incidents that could only be described as a racing incident.
“I knew you would ask me about that,” laughed Gibson.
“We were doing OK, I think we were sixth at the time, I’d only been out 10 laps or so, I went up across McPhillamy, up the hill, I looked in the rear mirror and knew Bobby (Bob Morris) was coming.
“I intended to move across to the right hand side as I went across Skyline. Bobby was a bit impatient and tried to go down the outside, he dropped a wheel off the circuit onto the dirt.
“I’m not exactly sure of the sequence of events but he hit the concrete wall on the outside, crashed into me, spun me then everyone else crashed into us.
“He spun and we basically had a head on. It caused a major traffic jam at the top of the hill, but really it was just a racing incident involving Bob and I and then it all compounded after that.”
Thanks for posting that. Looking at the initial damage to his car, I thought he must’ve ran wide, under steering into the wall and bouncing back…
