  • Jackie Hill Perry set the listeners of The Basement with Tim Ross a challenge to only listen to gospel music for 30 days and see how it affected their faith. So I did it and here’s what I learned.

I unintentionally started moving away from secular music over 2019 - 2021. But eventually I made the decision to primarily listen to worship music and Christian music because I got so into Christian podcasts that I wanted to spend the little time I was listening to music worshiping the Lord

I did a secular music fast a few months ago and it has changed the way I listened to music. I am now careful about song lyrics and how I feel when I listen to certain music. Also, during the fast Spotify kept recommending Christian r&b and afrobeat artists that I still listen to. Some of the artists I recommend are Bridge music, Asha Elia, Theresa Phondo, IMRSQD, Sondae, and Sarah Nathalie.

I stopped listening to music in general years ago. I became highly spiritual just over 10 years ago & realised some way through that music no longer resonates with me. Now I listen to melody/instrumental style music only. There are some days I listen to nothing at all. I only watch TH-cam on the weekend. I was naturally led to do these things because I couldn’t “hear” myself. You cannot hear god if there is constantly noise in your head.

You speak so eloquently x You’re right, listening to gospel music brings God into our day as opposed to Him being a one time thought when we have our time with Him. And you’re right that secular music can cause you to idolise certain things - like being attractive and a “bad b” or obsessed with money.
Thank you for making this video!

Ooh this is so interesting! I've been doing this for a while now but not intentionally. I love IMRSQD, Madison Ryan Ward, Antoine Bradford, Hulvey, Sarah Natalie... Soo many artists that have this kind of RnB/Pop sound that I love. It makes it easier because they aren't the “cliche” gospel music. I feel like they're the best of both worlds. Everyone should do this!! ❤
    Edit:
There's Lecrae obviously! He's an all-time fave! I recommend Andy Mineo too! Love him. Also, Limoblaze is a great Christian Afropop artist.
The point you made about returning to secular music 😂 its so true. If it's on the radio or supermarket or in passing, I can get by listening to it, but ever since switching to mostly gospel music the lyrics in secular songs sound so vulgar and vain! 😖
I would rather listen to clean music or gospel music now that I've found so many great artists that don't make “boring” gospel songs 🥰

I thank God for leading me to this specific video, because after returning from my youth retreat. I felt highly convicted to COMPLETELY cut off secular music. And when I tell you, as I got deeper into spending time with God in worship&praise, my spiritual and prayer life skyrocketed. It is certainly a journey but is worth it! Ask God to help you and you will see amazing results!

Yeppp 12:00 - so so so true. For me I realised when I listen to certain drake songs about money and a flashy lifestyle I feel this sense of arrogance and greater self worth when I imagine myself in that lifestyle. I didn’t realise until I went a few days without listening to music, by accident, and I felt a noticeable shift in my thoughts and my beliefs on makes me valuable

  • @WordsPictures997
    @WordsPictures997 ปีที่แล้ว +16

3 years ago I had a similar conviction. I had been convicted before but it felt like such a struggle. This time I prayed and told God I honestly needed help because music is genuinely an intricate part of my life and God begun to honor that prayer.
Good, clean, God honoring music is truly out there. Like you said, we just have to put in the work to look for it.
My life is definitely more peaceful 3 years on.
I don't necessarily only listen to Gospel music but I'm very intentional about staying away from artists who have questionable content and researching the artists and music I take on.
Sometimes it's still a temptation to go back for a beat but reminders like this video and the podcast you mentioned help keep me on track.

Thank you sister! This was an amazing message from God to you! My experience on secular music is after I got baptized February 5th, Holy Spirit convicted me of the music and I just couldn't listen to any of it; at all. Now I'm on my 5th month of just listening to Christian music and I've been changed a lot, from the way I think to the way I see and also the way I speak. It's been an amazing experience and journey that I'm still going on with God, all I can say now is I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I am so happy this came on my feed, I had this talk with a friend a while ago how music hasn't been the same for me lately. I am a music lover (singer as well) and so the music that is out now just doesn't feed my soul.
I now find myself listening to older music, love songs, coffeehouse music and now back to christian music. I never felt I needed to cut secular music out due listening to non christian music that have great meanings to it, but I have cut out alot of mainstream songs. I truly don't want to hear anything about drugs, sex, or cursing in music anymore and this video reminded me to go and look at my playlists and delete these songs that have been sitting there I no longer listen too.
I need to also do this with the videos and media I watch as well.

I’m so glad I saw this! I’ve been wanting to also take a break from listening to secular music. It’s been on my heart to do so, but it’s hard. Like you said I looove music I listen to more old skool r&b but I also dabble in some of todays artist. But as a believer in God I know that I shouldn’t listen to that type of music. I was telling my friend about how I want to stop listening to secular music and she said the same for herself. I will share this video with her. But I am definitely willing to do this 30 day challenge as well. I’ve deleted secular songs and came back to them it’s definitely a soul tie with music. I truly believe God wanted me to see this, this is my first video of yours that I’ve seen and it’s something that I needed. I will start the challenge tomorrow. I’m excited

This is a really important conversation! I’ve been listening to secular music less and less and when I now hear some of the songs I used to listen before, I’m actually shocked that I listened to these songs all day, everyday. I used to tell myself it was okay because I wasn’t singing some of the lyrics that I knew were inappropriate and I was just enjoying the beat but the lyrics are still going into your spirit and your mind everyday!!

I started listening to praise music to praise and worship alone when I was in the pits a little over two years ago and it has been my main music genre ever since. Like, if I get in the car and some other genre plays, I automatically look for where I can find God. I collect music and add it on my playlist from everywhere, you mentioned a song in this video, I have added it on my playlist and I am excited to listen to it. I wake up with a praise song in my heart almost every morning and I then play the song first on my playlist while getting ready in the morning. It completely changed my experience of the world for the better.

-CalledOut Music (artist from London - I kinda like some of his music)
    -Trey McLaughlin
-The Heritage Singers (they sing mainly calm, reflective songs and they have such sweet harmonies!!!)
(But personally, my favourite music tends to be the classic Gospel songs by artists like Israel Houghton and Kirk Franklin)

I don’t usually post on TH-cam videos and this might be my first comment on a video of Courtney’s despite watching her since I was in year 8.
I’ve always admired reflected on how well she articulated things in a way that is so accessible and full of wisdom.
I haven’t actively done a secular music fast or done it really intentionally. However I’ve always noticed that music is how I communicate and what makes sense to me. Especially in my relationship with God, I’ve found that singing and worship is how I reconnect, feel God and communicate things. I feel like honesty and hearing from God is always accompanied with melodies for me and it’s no wonder that music is also a big part of my life generally. This realisation meant that in the last couple of years when anxiety and depression have tried to drown and overwhelm me, worship music has always given me the air to breathe, float and allow myself to be carried amidst the storms and feel pretty settled. Noticing this meant I started intentionally making time in the mornings for worship to be the music I listen to on the way to work and help me recognise and keep God central to my day and life. I hate that it’s when I feel anxiety creeping up more that it’s more consistent and continue it when working and through my day. However after listening to this it’s helped me focus more on the freedom and peace that listening to non secular music gives me. I’m going to continue to be more intentional about listening to non secular music through my days.

I made the decision to stop listening to music with curse words over 3 years ago after realising (read Holy Spirit showed me 😅) that it was the biggest contributor to me having curse words in my vocabulary (although I didn't like it, they would just slip out when a situation would allow it). That led me to be more cautious and aware of the lyrical content of secular music in general. Over the past few years, I've seen my playlist transform to having less than 10% secular music. And I don't miss it at all.

Like others commenting, I made the decision to only switch to Christian music in 2019/2020 and it's really does fix your eyes on Jesus. I used to complain that Christian music was boring and I didn't want to let secular music go BUT I've found that once we submit fully to what God wants for us (which is, that what enters our bodies through our eyes and ears glorifies Him), your eyes really do get opened to the options galore out there. I now have Christian RnB, Lofi, Rap, Afrobeats, normal Gospel, and even Drill playlists; all bringing glory to Jesus! It's so worth ittttttttt and now, I just cringe at the emptiness of other music.

This is one of those things I think you have to go to God about. We have to be careful because the enemy is a musician too, and he has what he calls “soloists”. Who tend to be popular artist who are working as agents.

I gave up secular music last year (2022) and never looked back. I don't miss it at all. There's simply nothing better than Christian music
