    GENE is your GENEral Coverage Receiver. Lets you tune to any frequency the radio can receive, such as for shortwave listening. It's not tied to any specific ham band, it's going to give you at least 0.x MHz up to 30 MHz and probably more above that too. The default frequency (15.000) is a time signal beacon, that's what you were hearing.

    Auto Tune is for CW zero beat tuning. Unfortunately, it doesn't also auto track satellite doppler shift on FM carrier like the 9700 does.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It also has a port for an external tuner, so somehow you will need to activate that. I suspect the "tune" button does this as well.

    GENE is General Coverage. The battery comes 70% charged. You have to push the battery in hard so the tabs click. On external power the battery will show charging when mounted.

    To me it's odd there's no way to charge the battery as you mention and then giving you a dc plug going to two bare wires. Out fo the box you don't have a way to charge it without work on your end (install powerpoles etc) Even most HT's that I've owned at least have a wall wart to plug in and charge the radio. Nitpicky but odd. Manfrotto.... amazing products.

  • @richardtwyning
    @richardtwyning 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The auto tune button does do something :-) It's for CW to dial in the frequency to the correct Xmit freq of the received CW carrier :-)

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect it also controls the external tuner, since the radio has a port for one. (also mentioned in another comment)

    I would have purchased this rig to replace my IC-9100 if it provided 100 watts on HF, VHF, and UHF. Hopefully, Icom comes out with a replacement for it.

    Jason, here is a video suggestion: The IC-705 power output drops quickly as the voltage of the EXTERNAL battery decreases. At 13.0v, power starts decreasing from 10 watts. At 12v, power is down to about 8.5w, and at 11v, transmit power is back down to 5w, even on the external supply. Lead/SLA/AGM batteries exhibit drops in voltage pretty quickly in their discharge cycle. On the contrary, LiFeSo4 (eg: Bioenno) hold their voltage above 13v through much of their discharge cycle. Conclusion: If you want to maintain full output power on an external battery, you'd better use a LiFeSo4 battery with the IC-705 and NOT anything lead-based. You should test and verify this. It's an important result. 73, de W5NED.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty much true of any radio running on any battery, internal or external. Lots of HTs will see a power output drop as the battery drops from 100%, to 60%, and so on.
      But good suggestion, nonetheless. I was already thinking about doing a power output test so I'll see if I can work in these steps with it.

    Amazing radio, no doubt. Aesthetics lacking read bad. It looks like an Ic-7300 with the back chopped off. Its portable yet there is not place to hold it from. Such a modern radio with one antenna connector? Even the Ft-817 has two. They should have charged a bit more and made some real obvious improvements. I will wait for the next version.

    Thank you for this. This is helping me make my decision much easier. I noticed at around 19 minutes that on the FM side, on the menu I saw on the far right a Tone Scan button. I'm wondering does this help in setting up a tone on an unknown repeater that you've just heard. Thanks in advance or you help.

    • @HamRadio2

    It was mentioned in the reviews of those lucky enough to have the IC-705 that the HT battery came with little or no charge on it. It was suggested that the HT battery charge for 24 hours before use. 24 hours seems a bit overkill to me but my battery had a 50% charge on it. The manual mentioned that a setting should be activated so the external HT battery charges anytime an external power source is applied. Glad to finally have this rig after waiting for 10 months. I don't plan to let my FT817ND collect dust while I use the IC-705. Rather use both to each potential. I have finally stepped into the software defined radio world. A step that I thought I would never take. I think what hooked me on the IC-705 was my Club Contest team uses three IC-7300's for contesting. Have the touch screen menu reminds me of the early HT programming days, you know, when HT's only had 16 memory slots. I liked your review. Short and to the point. I look forward to your additional videos of this sweet rig. 72 de KB8AMZ

    What I really like about the IC-705 is the power supply. You don't have to have a 50 pound 13.8 v power supply sitting around taking up space you don't have. This is why I gave my TDX3000 to the local ham club when I moved into an apartment.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Power supplies of today don't weigh nearly this much anymore. Plus the 705 only runs 5w on its internal battery, but can go to 10w on an external batter or external power supply
