My very first radio 40 years ago, I ran the cutter across the top of the box. The manual sat just below the top. Cut a line straight through the first few pages !
Nice radio, and I will probably get it one day. Weird design looks like they chopped the back half of an IC-7300. The ft-817 has the feature where you can carry it around with the shoulder strap. The FT-817 is like an oversize HT whereas this is like an undersized mobile or base station.
You could probably find some kind of aluminum base plate that screws into the camera tripod socket of the radio, mount a strap on it and use it as a carry handle or to tilt the screen when it is placed on a flat surface.
@@HamRadioDX It's very handy having that capability built in. I don't think it'll be long before a 3D printed tilted stand will surface on Thingiverse.
So this radio is capable of so much and is portable. That being said what antenna(s) would you recommend that would allow all the aspects of this radio to be utilized and be portable. I am looking to get this radio, but I want an effective antenna setup that complements its capability and portability. Thanks. Good videos.
Probably a small 2/70cm whip antenna would suffice for the higher bands. As for HF, there have been a couple using Comet antennas. I don’t have one myself but have been looking at them. I’d you’re a serious portable operator then a small linked dipole maybe from QRP Guys.
@@HamRadioDX Thanks for the info. It would be nice if someone would do a video comparing QRP portable antennas. I don't see many good antenna videos and that's like wearing running shoes with no laces. ;-)
I got the IC705 late June. Using it with 10 watts , I had a QSO with N7XM on 30m CW. I think it's much better than FT817 or 818. I hope you'll enjoy the small radio. 73 Yoshi JE2PQQ
When did you order it? I have 3 on order at HRO. One for my best friend of 50 years and 2 for me in Texas. After he got his extra i was so afraid I’d fail the cw send or receive that I almost fainted even after I knew Already had 2 minutes solid. I have another 2 preordered in Thailand when it gets approved here in 3 or 4 months. W5mmt / HS0zac.
Okay i'm going to consider few aspects for the "outdoor /portable activity" related only . I really don't know if Icom engineers know what /p mean as you don't have all the comfy things all the times. Well i understand there's so many way to do /p ...sit on a park with a nice table and bench isn't /p for me . I did ALOT activity around the mountains, sit on big stones or in the middle of nowhere with loads of snow with my trusted tent. This teach you one thing : the radio must be rugged , light, without anything that can be broke etc etc . To me this radio isn't "comfortable" at all, it's all plastic, the large display can be scratched very easily (WHY we need a big tv screen these days ?! Aren't we able to tell about the signal strenght and readibility anymore but we need the waterfall and to see the filter curve instead of listen for ?!!? ) and what about the sunlight ? Is the display visible or we need sort of "sun repair" such as umbrella / whatever ? Okay it's a quad bands . The old and rugged ft 817 (818 now) is a quad bands also..no i really don't understand how peoples who do /p can love a radio like this . I'm not talking about the electronic part but the "shape" it has...holding on hand isn't comfortable at all to my eyes so it "could be" easy to loose it on the floor when setting up the "field" . 871/818 or 897/857 or the nice 703 and or the 706 IF it has to be a field /p radio...my trusted 817ND ( wich has the lovely Sotabeam double dedicated DDS filter ) "crashed" couple times on the ground ( it was rocks once..) and it has few scratches on the bottom cover. Will a radio like this survive ? Will the tiny mic jacks survive if you pull the mic chord accidentally ? ( the same on the 817/818 where the "phone" jackes are even worse ! ) Sorry but there are several aspects to consider (still) and to me this radio is too much delicate to have for the "out door" activity . The GOOD part is : there are things for everyone...so one can play with this new radio while i'll stick with my trusted 817 haha :)
Just got mine and can not find in the manual how to enter a repeater offset and PL tone. Also do not see how to import ICom repeater list. In fact do not even see the word repeater in the index of the manual. What am I missing 73s Tom W1TWS
Pressing the function button should bring up a menu with DUP and TONE. Long pressing on either of those buttons leads you to another menu to set the offset and tone.
Can't find any info on this rig for driving an external linear. I imagine some including me, might like to add a 50-100W on this for times when 5-10W won't do. Can't find anything at all about doing this, in the Manuals. There's a couple of connectors on the side but nothing more in the way of info. Anybody know?

Just ordered one. Thanks for the videos!
Thanks Wil! You'll enjoy your new purchase.

Mine arrived yesterday, along with the backpack. Woot!!
Now I need to get a small tripod for it!

A whole line of accessories will be very cool.

Thanks Yoshi! I love it already
use it with a transverter above 10 GHz and let me know what it is like
Did you try the airband, how's the reception?
Nice radio.. Maybe I should be calling Icom to ask why this radio is still NOT available in Canada yet.
Soon to be released in the United States, so Canada will be around the same or similar timing.
How's the frequency drift on UHF? (does its WSPR decode..)
I will do a video look at this issue. Thanks @Chris
hope they get to the US soon.. only been seeing lucky VKs ^_^
We are lucky and glad we actually got something first for once ;)

I got mine a few days after they were released in Australia

Thanks for your honest comments. I agree that every operator is different and this will appeal to some but not to everyone. 73’s and thanks again

correction.... found some info. I was overthinking it. I thought it would send serial data for band changes etc. But no, its a simple switch function.
Tease. The one's heading to VK4 are strapped to carrier pigeons 😟
😂😂

Just like this comment. Thanks
A commercial just a minute and a half into your video!!! Really!!! Asinine! I stopped watching. You lost a potential subscriber. Don’t abuse viewers!
TH-cam automatically place ads after upload. I have manually fixed this. Thank you.
