I know most of your subscribers will pause at this suggestion, but reading from Catholic and Orthodox sources would help with something like this. To be honest a lot of tricky stuff just made so much sense and opened a lot doors to understanding when I looked at what the apostolic traditions have said about passages too. You’d be surprised how much we just miss or ignore because the evangelical tradition sometimes doesn’t have room for certain trains of thought. People have been reading these text for hundreds of years. There are writings about them, they just might be Catholic or Orthodox.
The way you and Joe live your lives in front of people is such a positive testament for the Lord Jesus Christ. The way you order your days and the way you rear, your children and the way you handle your finances is an amazing testament for what it means to live for Christ and how he always boosts the quality of life. Of course, being born again is the most important thing a person can do, but then the outcome of that rebirth in him always improves the quality of our temporal lives, and you and your husband model this beautifully.
Okay I’ll give it a try. So in the verse it says that God sent an angel out to destroy a city. There is a lot of city’s that God destroyed in the Old Testament and to answer the question of “why would God destroy the people He created” the answer is that they were unrighteous and went against God in there sinful ways. And in the family line of Abraham and David which lead to Jesus you can read about all of the sin that family line has done not only can we learn from those sins it is also proof of how rare Jesus a person without sin is. All of the generations were full of sin but He wasn’t. So the angel destroyed the city because if you read in Genesis 18:26-33 that God saves the righteous and kills those who are not keep in mind this is the Old Testament so God would just destroy the cities that all sinned and God always gave them a way out but they wanted in live in there way. Not Gods. Often times there were worshiping idols and statues and not God. So I think that’s it please feel free to ask questions if you got any. I don’t know if I got it all.
I read the chapters before it and after it to get the context. God was going to destroy the city because of Kind David’s pride and as a punishment for taking a census (so he could boast of his numbers in battle and take the glory for their wins). God had just finished destroying 70,000 people with a plague as a consequence of this same sin. He sent the Angel, who unsheathed his sword, and only called him off once David and his leaders repented and humbled themselves before the Lord. THAT’S what turned the situation and God’s heart. We see this as an example of His GREAT mercy. His judgement, yes, but also His mercy.
It can be very helpful to look at other translations. King David had decided to count the people of Israel, which was not something he was allowed to do so God sent an angel with the punishment for doing that. 1 Chron 21:15 And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the Lord beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
I can't afford anything like dictionaries or commentaries, or even a good study bible. I only have access to free Bible apps. Any advice for studying the Bible for those who are less fortunate or short on resources?
“Enduring Word” is a free commentary app. Also, “Logos Bible” is a Bible app that, after you invest some time in understanding how to use the app, you will see that you are able to examine hebrew and greek terms through the app & not lose your place in your Bible reading. When you term search, it will also show you different passages (not just the references) and how those terms were used in different passages
The angel of the lord As I’ve understood, it was a type of Christphany ( probably misspelled that) Basically it’s another titled for Jesus Christ himself
This is the Orthodox belief. Jesus is the Word, the Logos, the Angel of the Lord. God says to Moses he is sending an Angel to help him and that Moses is to listen for He is in this Angel. Jesus is that Angel.
ESV expositors commentary is my favorite. Still waiting for volume 1 to be released.
Me too!
