The song "Paranoid" was written in a very short period of time in the studio. Like in an hour or so. They were told by the record company they needed another song for the album and they came up with this pretty much on the spot. Also, the band wanted the album to be named "War Pigs" but the record company wouldn't go for it and, thus, it became Paranoid.

Hey Aileen. Thanks for another great reaction. Black Sabbath were the forerunners of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. This song is effectively simple and it was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. Guitarist Tony Iommi crushed the tips of his middle and ring fingers in a machine he was working on in a factory and he moulded plastic tips to allow him to continue playing. That's so rock n' roll! As always, it's a pleasure to watch that eyebrow...it's so expressive🤨
Symptoms of the universe is an early very heavy song by them. Ozzys vocals are crazy. And the studio version is best for the second half being a part not played in live shows.
Regarding the accents you mentioned, Iron Maiden are from London and have more of the stereotypical "English" accent... not polished, but familiar. Sabbath are from Birmingham in the north of England and the Brummie accent is very distinctive. You can also hear it in interviews with members of Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and especially Barney from Napalm Death, all influential bands from that city.
Black sabath Is heavy metal of 70's Ozzy is very intensed, the riffs guitar Is unique Is so good, other song very iconic Is highway star deep purple have unique riff too
I recommend "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath." That whole album is great, but the title track is awesome. I also suggest "Iron Man." It's kind of the quintessential Ozzy-era Black Sabbath song and I think it's a must for anyone just getting into the band. Anyway, great video!!
One of these 2 songs is a must: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Symptom of The Universe The last time I saw Black Sabbath was at Ozzfest 2001 in Dallas. At that time Bill Ward was still drumming for them. It was definitely one of the top shows I've ever seen live. I was in the pit area in front of the bassist Geezer Butler. Ozzy brought out a harmonica and they jammed out The Wizard. Some lucky guy in the crowd caught that harmonica after Ozzy tossed it. That concert was better with ALL the original members, which is why I passed on their later shows.
I saw Sabbath live in 1995 and they were GREAT!!!!! I brought a friend with me who thought they were some scary death metal band, but by the end he was fully grooving to it too! 🎉
This is the music that hooked me on metal. Sabbath is so bass driven and Geezer Butler is the whole reason I play bass. Being 4 piece, Geezer filled all the gaps and kept the feel during leads. Him and Bill Ward locked together and no matter what Tony or Ozzy did, they were rock solid. Losten to their title somg, Black Sabbath and another great one is The Wizard. I could list 20 songs from them in a heartbeat that are iconic and bad ass
With every other band everyone follows the drums, but with sabbath it’s a circle, ozzy follows Tony, Tony follows Geezer, and Geezer follows Bill, but bill follows Ozzy.
Paranoid. This was the first song I ever learned to play on Guitar, Bass, and Drums. Very easy to play. The second was War Pigs. That was a little harder, but not too hard. Great times. Long Live METAL! 🤘😎🤘🎶🎵🎶🎶🎵
My fave Ozzy era Sabbath song. Speaking of bassy sound, Tony's guitar is tuned down to like C+, due to the accident he had, literally on his last day at the steel factory job he had, before going full time with the band. Imagine having your finger tips snipped off, having to play, so close to the bone, so he devised some feaux tips, trying out different things to find what worked, down tuning helped, making the strings looser. In the Dio years I think Tony's playing improved. Heaven and Hell is a must hear, if you haven't heard it yet. I feel the driving groove of this song is something Iron Maiden picked up on, and ran with. /,,/ !
I remember when black sabbath first came out they wasn't excepted by the mainstream it really was the late 70s before they started getting the credit they deserved. In the beginning they scared the hell out people..lol Geat reaction our beautiful rock angel 🤘🤘😇
Guau!!!
Hi Aileen. It's a pleasure hearing your reviews, being a relatively new viewer/listener to your site. In '72 - '73, I traveled and worked with a band throughout the Boston area. We were all friends and certainly shared the same music tastes. Black Sabbath was then a relatively new sound on the airwaves, but gaining popularity fast... One of the most popular tunes we did was Paranoid. We were the house band, playing 7 nights a week unless the club booked other bands for a night or so (Aerosmith being one of them just prior to their releasing their debut album). Needless to say, I heard Paranoid in my sleep, having heard it so many times from our months at the club and other gigs. I must say, having heard it only a few times since then, it felt GREAT and fresh again to hear your presentation tonight. Obviously, memories flooded back from a very interesting time in my life, from an era that will never again be duplicated. R.I.P. to my good friend Mel, the guitarist and organizer of this band. Thanks again Aileen. Stay the course - you're doing a wonderful job!
Fun fact. When Tony Lommi was working in a Birmingham factory, he lost the tips of all his playing fingers, and was told he would never play the Guitar again. Hence the heavy stumming and why so many people find it hard to play the cords he does
Ozzy played at the closing ceremony of last years Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, in the rehearsal the secret was revealed and Ozzy was there (rumours were doing the rounds). Everyone cheered and were shouting his name, Ozzy's response was "you lot can all fu*k off!". Legend.
The song "Black Sabbath" from the album of the same name is a great song and a good showcase of their talents. Also since Sabbath are often credited as being the founders of metal the fact that it's from their first album makes it a bit of a history lesson, doesn't it? I look forward to someday seeing your take on the Dio era of Sabbath. Good work Aileen, it's always nice to see a young person appreciating the classics!
Lots of permanent hearing from listening to Black Sabbath when I was a teenager and it was a price I'd be willing to pay all over again 59 years old still sounds damn good to me and keep rocking girl
That's the greatest thing about Ozzie is that every song you heard you could make out the words to each song. I grew up in the 70s and listen to Black Sabbath. They totally blew everybody's Minds! He moved on in the 80s and it was just as easy with guitarist Randy Rhoads. Totally awesome guitarist but died at a young age rest in peace Randy Rhoads
Apparently Black Sabbath started as a blues band called Earth, and started getting heavier and louder because the audience were ignoring them! Maybe just a tale, but interesting all the same.
Black Sabbath released quite a string of great albums through the 70's. They fired Ozzy around 1979 after Never Say Die. That's when Sabbath picked up Ronnie James Dio, and Ozzy picked up Randy Rhoads. In my opinion, this led to some of the greatest metal of all time. Black Sabbath released Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, and Live Evil with Dio, while Ozzy released Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman with Randy. Randomly pick any song off any of these albums and I think you'd be blown away.
If you want to hear some great instrumental from Sabbath, You need to hear "The warning" It's an amazingly groovy long song with only a few lines of singing. I think that would be exactly what you're looking for....Also, you should check out some later Sabbath with Ronny James Dio on vocals. "Heaven and Hell" "Sign of the southern cross" Children of the sea" would all be great selections. Dio is one of the greatest vocalists of all time, in any genre...That's an undisputed fact!
I recommend listening to Children of the Grave. Honestly, with my favorite band, it is hard to go wrong with any of their songs, but this one has always held a special place for me. It is about revolution, recognition of our mistakes and hope for future generations to stand taller.
Aileen, You are young so you did NOT grow up with this music. I saw them back in the 1970's. DAMN what a great show!!!! It was like listening to an album. The show was non-stop. End one song and launch right into the next one. Bill Ward the drummer never stopped until the end of the show!!! Later beautiful..... Thanks
Yes - watched them live at a small venue. Were certainly energetic ... and this was from the first Album I ever bought after getting a saturday job! Never really thought about it till your reaction - but for sure - you can hear ALL the lyrics. So yes, his enunciation was good. You can't say that for many metal bands!
This is from 1971, Ozzy was with Black Sabbath from the Start. 1969 to 1978/79. They were called EARTH for a bit, but They changed it to Bkack Sabbath. They have been back together for different events. Your doing GREAT!!
Ozzy has a legendary history of drink n drugs exploits & this affected his speech later on in his life… Bands like Black Sabbath came from the Birmingham (Brummies) area of England…. They’re legends 🖤
PLAY PARANOID!! The classic shout in any concert or live performance 😄 And most of the time if the band is on top of things they will play the starting riffs at least and some bands play even the whole thing
Out of all the mysteries of the universe, Ozzy’s singing voice being perfectly clear when his talking voice is jibberish is the biggest mystery of all, LOL. His singing voice is perfect. The bass is the diamond of this song.
It actually happens quite a bit. I'm a big fan of Garbage and as a teenager I saw an interview with Shirley Manson and was like "Wait, what the fuck, what is happening right now?" because I could not understand a goddamn word she said. Her Scottish accent then in the 90's was SO thick, but she had no accent at all while singing.
Thank God it happens because it has brought us some great music. The Gallagher brothers from Oasis were nearly unintelligible when they first started too.
IMHO, this may be the original lineup's "purest" song. To many OG metalheads (Y'know, people like me), the very first true metal song was Black Sabbath's eponymous first cut from their premiere album, also of the same name. As a true metalhead yourself, you should check it out, if only for historical reasons. The same sound effects that start the song appear at the end of the last cut of their final album. BTW, the primary difference between Ozzy's singing in the early '70s and his speaking in recent years mostly comes down to roughly 50 years of booze and drugs.
Back in the 80s I was lucky enough to see Ozzy with Black Sabbath. Then I saw him on his own when he came out with Crazy Train. Then not long after that Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio. All this within the span of 2 years. Will not forget.
Instrumental wise my fave Sabbath song is Fairies Wear Boots. The 1970 Paris concert has a good version. Btw this version of Paranoid is just the studio album playback over the live performance. Looks like a TV show performance or something, was very common to use playback instead of live audio on TV back in the day because it was so hard to get live audio to not sound like crap on TV.
This is different I never seen Tony on the right of the drums gezzer on the left. If you pay attention to Tony's fingers you see he has leather caps on the tips of his fingers that he lost in a factory accident. He is one of the guitarist that inspired me to play.
It was probably a good 20 25yrs ago maybe at the Ozzfest i saw Ozzy live. I went to the Ozzfest a few times and each time it was a Black Sabbath farewell tour. But it was incredible. Plus i got to see Pantera, System of a Down and Rob Zombie close out different shows over the years they did Ozzfest. And if you went to an Ozzfest you know there's a small side stage for newer or unknown bands. I saw Disturbed before they were big on the side stage. Great times!!!
You are totally right about Iron Maiden they are from the UK. Gret band my favourite song is run to the hills: see the video and read the lyrics , you will understand why.

Also I remember hearing the song by Led Zepp " In My Time of Dyin " during my drug years and made me think about death and Jesus. Then a hippy friend that dug Jesus told me more of Jesus love and forgiveness and how I could also know Jesus love. So in 1981 I cried out to Jesus and wow man He came into my life and I had and have so much joy and peace and now know that through Jesus when I die I will be with Him in Heaven. Hey Jesus loves each of you also and yall can know Him if you are at all open. Just cry out to Him and a good question to ask yourself if you were to die today would you go to heaven ? And if yes why ? To find out more please read the Gospel of John in the Bible or check out the movie on TH-cam. 😀
Ozzie's speaking voice is a lot clearer when he's not out in the public. You can observe this on the reality show he did with Jack, "Ozzie and Jack's World Tour". When Ozzie is in the rv, or a hotel room, anywhere in private with his family, he is wide eyed and speaking clearly, like he sings . As soon as he is in public he becomes the shuffling, mumbling, incoherent seeming Ozzie we all expect
Geezer Butler was a fantastic songwriter as well as a driving bass player, Bill Wards drums were always on point with little jazz fills giving a change of pace, Ozzy was at his height when this was recorded IMO, Tony Iommi just plays fast riffs to finish the song so well. Of all the songs by Black Sabbath the ones to listen to are Black Sabbath, Iron Man and War Pigs the evil trio that really moved from heavy rock to Metal
Back in the 90s when i first started driving. Busting ass down moreland ave in atlanta leaving my now wifes house. Windows down,1 in the morning blasting this. Passed what i thought was a broke down old vw bug that use to sit by the sidewalk, then the headlights came on. I knew i had shit the bed. Ended up with 3 cars of red dog squad on me. I was paranoid for sure. Got out of it lucky, only got a speeding ticket, the cop that clocked me dropped my speed on the ticket just enough to avoid a wreckless driving charge
I'm listening to music over 60 years, no real fan of headbanger music but I really dug this and Iron Man by them. Awesome guitar playing also! You may enjoy Mississippi Queen by Mountain in 70. Legendary guitar player Leslie West really playing a mean guitar. May have been the lead singer also. Terrific! Best of luck on yr channel
100% classic. Needless to say Ozzy has changed a tad since this was recorded but the man remains a legend. Even back in the 70s you rarely heard Black Sabbath on the radio here in Australia and most of the 'pop' music shows tended to concentrate on more mainstream stuff. The band's name had something to do with it of course as the media outlets of the day didn't want to offend their largely Christian audience. 'Easy Living' by Uriah Heep is another song from the early days of metal you're sure to love. Have an awesome weekend Aileen.
Great reaction! If you could react to Crowbar-Planets Collide or Lasting Dose, that would be amazing. I truly think you and everyone will enjoy it. Both of those songs are beautiful, slow and Heavy. They’re a very underrated 90’s Sludge Metal band. Thanks a lot for your reactions.
When MTV had the reality show, The Osbornes, whenever Ozzy spoke, they used subtitles ! He's not considered, The Prince of F**king Darkness for nothing!
The first song I learned on the guitar. Dressed as Ozzy for Halloween back in 2012 and sang this song at the Karaoke contest and won :). Another fun fact about this song. It was written in an hour because they needed a 3 minute filler for their album to be complete.
Honestly if your band makes something the quality of Paranoid when they have to slap a song together at the eleventh hour to fill album space...You're probably going places.
I strongly suggest your next reaction to Sabbath: Symptom of the Universe from the album Sabotage. That track started everything. I grew up listening to them (yeah I'm old lol) and I'm happy to see the next generation loving it as much as I do. Each time I'm asked what are my top ten albums of Metal of all time, I always answer: the first 6 albums of Black Sabbath and the first 4 albums of Metallica. For the latter, I strongly recommend Master of Puppets as a reaction. Anyhoot, looking forward to seeing more Sabbath! :)
Ozzy may be like the country singer Mel Tillis. Mel stuttered when he spoke, but didn't when he was singing. My favorite Sabbath for guitar riffs is Fairies Wear Boots. But all the instrumentation is awesome in that song.
If you want to go into a Sabbath rabbit hole then anything from the first six albums would be ideal, those albums still stand the test of time and would hold up against anything now. Electric Funeral, Into the Void, Hole in the Sky, Megalomania and Symptom of the Universe are personal favourites of mine, well worth you reacting to.

Love black sabbath. And this song gets stuck in your head for days lol. As they're from my country uk they make me feel proud to be british.
One of these 2 songs is a must:
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Symptom of The Universe
The last time I saw Black Sabbath was at Ozzfest 2001 in Dallas.
🤘😎🤘🎶🎵🎶🎶🎵
Black Sabbath is the blueprint for all metal for all time
Snowblind and N.I.B. by Sabbath are both great. 🏴
You need to see N.I.B live performance.
There's a rendition of them doing 'Blue Suede Shoes' somewhere here on TH-cam.
Black sabbath a rocking song. Paranoid the first metal song the birth of heavy metal
I was in the same boat. I friended someone who was a metal musician and he exposed me to so many amazing bands and genres I would have never found.
I recommend listening to Children of the Grave. Honestly, with my favorite band, it is hard to go wrong with any of their songs, but this one has always held a special place for me. It is about revolution, recognition of our mistakes and hope for future generations to stand taller.
Aileen,
You are young so you did NOT grow up with this music.
That interesting guitar tone during the solo is the sound of a slashed amp speaker. They used to do that before distortion pedals were a thing.
I'm glad the younger generation enjoyed this kind of music 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
This is from 1971, Ozzy was with Black Sabbath from the Start. 1969 to 1978/79. They were called EARTH for a bit, but They changed it to Bkack Sabbath. They have been back together for different events. Your doing GREAT!!
I recommend you watch them live in Paris 1970, available here on TH-cam. Amazing, intense performance of war pigs in particular! 🤘
This is my favorite genre too.
Please do Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell.
Paranoid and Black Sabbath are like Stairway to Heaven and Led Zepplin they are 2 songs everyone knows fluently.
The clip was filmed at the belgian TV studio, during the show 'Folllies'. We tried to not miss one.
The paranoid album is to me the best album ever recorded .
The Dark side of the moon
Or
Abby Road
Zeppelin iii
Black Sabbath is probably my favorite band of all time nice to slayer, and my personal opinion into the void is probably the best song.
There were three bands in the 70s UK. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. They were called the unholy trinity.
Great choice! Can't go wrong with Ozzy. He just released a new song that's worth checking out as well!
This is different I never seen Tony on the right of the drums gezzer on the left. If you pay attention to Tony's fingers you see he has leather caps on the tips of his fingers that he lost in a factory accident. He is one of the guitarist that inspired me to play.
Sabbath are from Aston in Birmingham UK
It's based around the noise of the heavy machines and the pounding of the hammers giving the beat
"Nativity in Black" aka "N.I.B." is a very good song that shows off Geezer Butler's basswork. It's an absolutely amazing song! : )
Love that song
You are totally right about Iron Maiden they are from the UK. Gret band my favourite song is run to the hills: see the video and read the lyrics , you will understand why.
Also if ya dig and enjoyed this video which was cool and I still am a long haired after all these years though with a changed heart and peace in the heart and you can also 😀 you may also enjoy the song " Most of All " By Glenn Kaiser and Where Roses Grow Live by Rez Band Awesome songs check them out.
Got out of it lucky, only got a speeding ticket, the cop that clocked me dropped my speed on the ticket just enough to avoid a wreckless driving charge
sabbath's "the wizard" is brilliant. ozzy on harmonica in that tune
"N.I.B" (full song) and "Children of the Grave" are two more I recommend from the Ozzy era.
I saw them on their last tour with Ozzy in 1978. They were spectacular!
I saw Black Sabbath live on their reunion at Ozzfest, early 2000's and I've seen Ozzy perform with Zakk Wyle, and Jake E Lee
Wylde
Band- MC5. Heavy, Punk, before their time. They played Woodstock
Ozzys clear singing-It’s the same magic effect that makes accents disappear!
Well you seem to love Sabbath, but there is another band of which Ozzie said that they started Metal.
Motorhead!
Geezer on the bass always hit that thing so dam hard 🤘
100% classic. Needless to say Ozzy has changed a tad since this was recorded but the man remains a legend. Even back in the 70s you rarely heard Black Sabbath on the radio here in Australia and most of the 'pop' music shows tended to concentrate on more mainstream stuff. The band's name had something to do with it of course as the media outlets of the day didn't want to offend their largely Christian audience. 'Easy Living' by Uriah Heep is another song from the early days of metal you're sure to love. Have an awesome weekend Aileen.
Black Sabbath is the birth of heavy metal .
Yes please Crowbar is one of my favorite bands that's nobody reacts too if she does would be awesome even Chemical God's or Dead Sun
When MTV had the reality show, The Osbornes, whenever Ozzy spoke, they used subtitles ! He's not considered, The Prince of F**king Darkness for nothing!
This song is the heavy metal Anthem 🤘👏
The first song I learned on the guitar. Dressed as Ozzy for Halloween back in 2012 and sang this song at the Karaoke contest and won :). Another fun fact about this song. It was written in an hour because they needed a 3 minute filler for their album to be complete.
Lol im 60 years old and my head still bobs listening to this great song .
Honestly if your band makes something the quality of Paranoid when they have to slap a song together at the eleventh hour to fill album space...You're probably going places.
Classic and every garage band set, including mine back in the day!
Sabbath was a must. Now you need the bridge between Sabbath and 80s thrash. Motorhead should be next on your list.
2 of my favorite songs by black sabbath you wont change me & national acrobat
If you want to go into a Sabbath rabbit hole then anything from the first six albums would be ideal, those albums still stand the test of time and would hold up against anything now. Electric Funeral, Into the Void, Hole in the Sky, Megalomania and Symptom of the Universe are personal favourites of mine, well worth you reacting to.
